Wow, it's just a good thing it's on 3DS since it's a handheld game, and Japan loves handhelds, I mean it would have NEVER have sold if it were on this home console known as Switch or anything... Huh? What's that? It's on Switch? But Japan buys handhelds in bulk, not consoles, this MUST have been on 3DS! Huh? Successor? But Nintendo and their fanboys keep insisting it's NOT the successor? Huh? The market says it is? Oh, then okay...
@Silly_G given how it spans multiple devices, it seems they're blanketing everything- we all know the 3DS version is going to bomb, and be the lowest selling of the group- even XBox games are outselling 3DS games, so that should be indicative how things are right now for it.
@Heavyarms55 Wii U was full of 1,000+ indie games, and Switch has been living off Wii U ports since Odyssey, something they should have done with Wii U (port over Wii games since the majority of Nintendo fanboys are stupid enough to buy them multiple times).
Saying something which isn't topping the charts to begin with doubling doesn't give any kind of indicator to how it's doing. It could have gone from 100 to 200 systems. Just like when the 2DS "quintupled" in a month, it went from 1,000 to 5,000, still well behind PS4...
@NEStalgia there's another problem with that though. They're trying to get an audience who's used to paying small amounts to do in app purchases, not $300 for a system, and another $60 for a game! It may have worked on the $80 2DS, and $20 Pokemon games from the Selects, but paying $100 versus paying $360 is MASSIVE! That's why casuals don't own systems anymore and play on their phone.
It's amazing how well it sold on Wii U, even pushing that system to 40 million units after it released, and, oh wait... Yeah, Smash isn't this big system seller like everyone thinks it is, Wii U proves that.
They're still trying their hardest to make remakes sell. You look historically at remade Pokemon games, and they never sell as well as mainline series games do. Then, of course fanboys argue, because it's a remake. So, they'll argue either way with these, either they sell like crap, and fanboys argue because they're remakes, or it sells modestly well, and they'll say because of the Go hype which died way down in 2017.
But, but, but 3rd party games sell so great on Nintendo systems! Oh, wait... Yeah, that's why I hate Nintendo fanboys, they won't admit that 90% of Nintendo system owners buy it to play Nintendo games, not Call of Duty, NOT 2K stuff, they're buying it for their exclusives!
"In Japanese, these two would be pronounced the same, despite English spelling differences" uh, having studied Japanese for 4 years, no, no they wouldn't be pronounced the same, because Nintendo used "ファミリーコンピュータ" meaning that "n" was pronounced "m" since it was followed by the "pu" kana. They would have always said "famicoM" even in Japanese, because it was a shorter way of writing "ファミリーコンピュータ".
@BlueOcean again, they're NOT just focusing on Switch, they still continue to push the 3DS, and THAT is why there's this delay- AGAIN, because not only are they developing games for Switch, they're also doing mobile AND continue to develop games for 3DS (even if they're ports, they still take time and money away from would be other games for Switch).
@LUIGITORNADO impossible for 2 reasons. One, Iwata merged their console and handheld hardware divisions back in 2013. Two, a 3DS successor would have to be 720p, meaning the games wouldn't be cheap to produce anymore.
@Rob3008 because they're not just focusing on one system, the 3DS just got more games revealed, as well as new hardware revisions revealed yet again. THIS is why they're again falling back to where they were during the Wii U era because they continue to insist they can develop for multiple platforms, when in reality they can't. Now they've got mobile to develop for, as well as Switch, and they're just being plain stupid at this point with the 3DS, and it's coming at the cost of Switch games- that's why their E3 sucked!
@ekwcll it's already tracking behind last year's pace worldwide, meaning they're putting a LOT of stock on Pokemon and Smash as holiday games to push the systems, and it's a high risk, because mobile players RARELY spend large amounts for new hardware- the only reason Go helped the 3DS was because the 2DS had just been dropped to $80, but if Switch stays $300 for this holiday, remade Pokemon or not, it's NOT going to do last year's numbers.
@Ernest_The_Crab why is everyone ASSuming that Go players who paid like $5 and $10 at a time are going to shell out $300 for a system and $60 for a game? Have people really misunderstood mobile players that much? If you want to get them, you give them free stuff, and nickel and dime them, they're not the kind of people who'll willingly shell out large sums of money to buy new expensive playing gadgets when their phones are good enough. THAT is why people are putting extremely high hopes on a REMADE Pokemon game, which also by the way don't really sell well either!
@NewAdvent it's not the same Pokemon though, it's really Yellow with Go combined, so it's going to alienate fans, AND you're ASSuming that Go users will shell out $300 for a Switch on top of $60 for a game when they've been used to only paying $5 to $10 at a time. Not as big a lock as you think. Oh, and as for Smash, how well did that sell Wii U again?
@DBPirate actually, it doesn't. It's dropped so far in Japan that the top 20 games list usually only list Pokemon, and it's not even close to the Switch/PS4 in weekly sales. The only- ONLY place where it has a decent chance has been America, due to scalpers/collectors continually buying all those limited edition (practically every version is now a special edition something), but unlike what Reggie said, it has NOT increased in sales this calendar year, it's actually DECREASED from Jan-March, 2018 compared to Jan-March, 2017!
@Dezzy they really couldn't fill the first year, because look how many Wii U ports there were in 2017! Its biggest game, Zelda, was originally designed for Wii U!
"Mr Furukawa is of the belief the device still has advantages over the Switch and stated Nintendo was “considering various possibilities” in regards to a successor for the popular handheld device." meaning there could also be a Switch Lite or a Switch Mini, but either way, with Pokemon, the 3DS's highest selling series, moving to Switch, the 3DS is not only over, the successor has already hit store shelves, and it's named Switch!!
Well, considering GameCube was a commercial failure like Virtual Boy and Wii U (for those who are going to argue with that, it took BOTH the DS and the GBA to keep Nintendo from losing money during the GC era), why?
@dougphisig look how fast it's already gotten just over the last 5 years. Don't forget too that in 2006 people said HDTV's weren't common (and they weren't), but here in 2018 all the systems are HDTV ready. It's making strides, so who knows exactly when, but the day will come soon that we see all digital/streaming only video game systems.
Given Kimishima's statement about Switch having a longer lifespan than their typical 4-5 years, and their reveal of Switch from its codename of "NX", the Switch is Nintendo's next generation of systems, made to compete with PS5 and XBox #. Nintendo doesn't view this as a PS4/XBoxOne competitor, they see it as an early release of the next generation. That said, it's also likely true to be Nintendo's final system to use physical media. They plan for this thing to last 7 to 9 years, so their next system will be around 2024, and by then, a good chance the PS6 and XBox-whatever, will be all digital too.
And it'd be even faster process if they weren't wasting their time continuing to split development between Switch, 3DS and mobile. Imagine a time that they only have to focus on Switch and mobile, and games don't get massive delays... Oh, who am I kidding, this is Nintendo, they'll always have delays, because they think they need to have 15 devices to develop for...
@Silly_G calling it a DS port means you didn't play much of either the DS version or the Wii version, because there were elements from the first game (real holidays, the return of the fountain, the return of Wisp, the return of Chip- I can go on and on) that were also in City Folk. CF isn't a port of Wild World, it's truly what IGN called it- "a blending of the prior games".
"Tremendous interaction with Pocket Camp. Fans are really enjoying that experience. We’re introducing it to new consumers. That bodes well for whenever the next Animal Crossing might come." Wrong, Reggie, that user base has shrunk, ever since you added loot boxes! By the time it comes out, the hype from the app will be over- just like the Go hype is dead now! Yeah, yeah, 60 million MONTHLY users is nothing, the daily users is WAY smaller than that, and this thing at the top of the hype was generating hundreds of million of users!
@westman98 it didn't, it decreased in its 8th year going from 350,000 shipped Jan 1, 2017-March 31, 2017 to 300,000 shipped Jan 1, 2018-March 31, 2018. That's a DECREASE this calendar year. The guy flat out lied! His own company report says so!
@skywake There's even more to the story as well. Compare Q4, 2016 to Q4, 2017, and it actually SLOWS DOWN in America too! It did 350,000 (shipped) in Q4, 2016 versus 300,000 (shipped) for Q4, 2017. That's an INCREASE? Nope! It's been DECREASING this calendar year, not increasing!
Oh dear god they've completely lost their damn minds! It is one thing to continue to push a 6 year old game, but it's another to push it like it's a new game! This game came out in 2012 (Japan), and 2013 for Europe, it's time to quit milking it already, fans are going to start boycotting you when the Switch one does come out- you're losing fans Nintendo, not gaining them!!
@johnvboy look at weekly Japanese sales. Compared to the prior year, they're consistently lower, same with NPD sales charts. Now take that as you will, but generally lower sales means lower popularity.
Think about your statement of Nintendo being able to sell MORE Switch's this year compared to last in contrast to your statement about Switch sales being DOWN compared to last year. It's going to take one hell of a holiday season (without mainline Pokemon too) in order to not only catch up to last year's sales, but to surpass them! It's not a guarantee like you seem to think it is.
Too bad most of it was promoting the 3DS and its games from 2011 to 2013! All hail the New 2DS Zelda cover- like that needed 10,000 commercials to promote!
Can't believe they discontinued the New 3DS when its sales dropped below 1,000 a week, yet the 2DS they're sticking with despite being less than half that of the New 3DS- it's just wasting shelf space at this point!
No one will forget their wall of games, with the tickets used to determine how many they had. They were the only store I know of who was openly admitting how many copies of each game they had in stock. Most would have them behind glass counters or such, and sometimes in the back, so customers rarely knew if they had 3 copies of Mario, or 30 copies. Toys R Us you'd know, just by counting the tickets! If they had 21 tickets, that means they had 21 copies of the game (at least, assuming someone wasn't holding one). Then, they moved their game selections into "R Zone" where again, they let people know how many copies they had by using those security cases- one per game. And again, if you counted 5 games on the shelf in those cases, they had 5 copies of that game. Toys R Us's transparency was amazing, and remained that way until they changed their "R Zone" to make it more like everyone else, and just threw them into a tall display case, where you had to sometimes guess how many copies of the game were there- is that one behind the 4th the same game, or a different game?
@IronMan28 you'd think, but 3DS fanboys seem to hate calling Switch the 3DS's successor, especially on boards like this, and continue to believe that there's going to be some successor for it in the future, because their God Reggie keeps feeding them the lies that Nintendo's going to continue splitting development between Switch and 3DS, yet in Japan the 3DS is clearly saturated in the market, because during Golden Week it was down 60% from 2017's Golden Week. That should tell market observers, that despite what Nintendo continues to claim, clearly the market sees Switch as the 3DS's successor.
