Just hearing the music from the trailer makes me instantly bored. I loved Ys 8, but 9 and now 10 look almost the same. Has the engine stayed the same?? I know folks love the series but.. this series is flat and needs something more to really break out.
So, I actually think it’s a fun little daily thing to do on the Switch. I’m not sure if I’ll stick with it longer than a few weeks, but it’s kind of fun to poke into puzzles every day. I could do more since I bought it, but I’d rather make it last longer until I feel forced to buy DLC. I also don’t want to spoil the game for myself by beating everything in few days.
@inenai This is how I feel about it. It’s something to do, but the story is.. really lame honestly. I am carrying about business as usual but.. I kind of want my money back. I maybe jumped the gun too soon.
I played this game on Apple Arcade and was very satisfied with the first half and waited about six months or so for them to release the second half.. which let me down IMMENSELY. The second half basically dismissed the story and instead gave me some kind of boss rush type of game that had very high difficulty spikes. I play games for the story, and having that cut JUST when the game was starting to get amazing(you unlock a skill tree just before the second part!!) it loses it entirely.
I still think that they were being rushed to hit a deadline that instead of crafting the story to completion, they instead went for a faster finish and made it the boss rush/free roam kind of idea.
First part of this game was a 8.5/10 for me, but when combined with the second part it went down to a 5/10.
@TheCold0ne I kind of wonder if a lot of developers are giving us the "Switch 2 ready" versions this past year since they know the Switch 2 will be backwards compatible and that when we play things on the Switch 2 we'll be running smoothly then?
@B3RTAY That's literally what a reviewer is supposed to do. Cover the game. Especially an RPG which usually features a LOT of story. In this review, and many before this, we get VERY limited talk or mention of the story and instead they just say, "story is light, BUT THE GAMEPLAY!!" and you, me, everyone who reads and watches their content should be able to demand a little more if they want to continue to keep readers and viewers.
This is ridiculous and you're just scrambling to win some kind of argument that literally was never directed toward you.
@speedracer216 See, this is exactly what I'm talking about. I need something like THIS from them. I'm not expecting a big time story, but with the quick sentence or two they gave us about it being not too deep, it just left me with nothing. Like is it even worth playing then?? Give me more than "it's lacking in depth." I've played a few DQs from the past, and loved DQ9, which this seems to resemble a lot of honestly, and I knew the party characters don't really talk.
@B3RTAY I prefer NintendoLife's presentation is why. And I generally agree with their gaming preferences, but I would like for them to spend more time explaining story and give it a legit explanation as to why it's not good or why it's amazing, etc.
I'm so tired of people hopping on to reply with wannabe witty remarks to things that's not even directed towards them.
@Polvasti This is exactly what I wish NintendoLife would give us more of. I know it's lacking in story, but tell us why and how. It's like two lines about the story and that it's not that in depth and nothing more. I'm tired of playing games that have a great aesthetic and subpar story/character development.
I'm saying this as a legit fan of NintendoLlife without any shade... but I would like for you all to give us more than one line or two about the story. This is 35 - 60 hours of our lives, and if we could get more coverage on the story and why it's bad or why it's good in more of your reviews I'd really appreciate that. I've bought several games where the story was barely talked about only to feel burned when I made the purchase.
Again, I'm a huge fan of NintendoLife, but would just like a little more on story coverage when applicable.
@PikaPhantom I'm sure they have a ton of products and ideas in development in the bank/vault straight up for a reason like this. It's a great way to make money during the holiday rush and cause a buzz with the company just before Switch successor is released. That's exactly what this is.
This is Nintendo totally knowing that they can make literally anything and be able to sell it to their fans, so they spit out something like this just before the holidays to cash in because the Switch successor isn't ready.
Totally fine waiting. It's weird that people bug them about it when people probably have a ton more games they haven't even finished in their backlogs. That said, this makes me think 1.6 for consoles won't be ready until early next year.
Nothing problem. In a year from now they're just going to wrap boosters in some kind of anti-scanning doohickey paper and up charge based on the new materials needed for packs.
Card makers are already looking at combating this, for sure.
A part of me is just a little annoyed with Nintendo on the Switch OS. Like, why has the home button light literally never been a thing beyond Ring Fit Adventure? Would have been great for that to illuminate and let us know when we had messages, etc.
Also, why have we never gotten themes? It seems so easy to me to spit out themes on this kind of device. Animal Crossing theme, Mario theme, etc. Instead, we've been stuck with Black and White and that's it? Not even a random new color here and there? Feels very odd to me and I wish they were more transparent with what happened to basically freeze any progress on making the OS a complete feature.
Yeah, I agree. I don't care about that game in the slightest. I played a lot in my early 20s, but I'm 100% out on those games now. They probably wouldn't sell enough to pay for the salaries of the folks that have to develop and maintain the game.
Cadence and Crypt were amazing games, but this last game totally turned me off from buying so.. I wonder if that affected their money some. Instead of going with a safe game that had proven to sell, they went another direction and I bet most folks just didn't buy that game.
Man, I'm a fan of Metroidvania games, but at the same time I'm KIND of over them. I was playing Ori recently and suddenly got bored with a game I loved just because I think I've played too much of that genre for a while. Letting it rest, and then I'll be back.
The game needs some kind of frame rate help for sure. I played Scarlet and loved the gameplay, but gosh the entire game just feels SLOW and I think it's because it runs at such an inconsistent rate. I'm sure the game is doing a lot of processing to be able to spawn a ton of Pokemon constantly, but still.. I really hope GameFreak nails this down for the next game. I don't think it's the Switch hardware's fault on this one. You know the hardware you have to work with, and they chose to exceed it. Twice now.
@booeygirl That part of the game isn't long if you can just suffer through. I'd say that part of the game only took me an hour, and that's with me stopping to catch unique pokemon.
Kind of a clickbait tactic here. Doesn’t seem like much of a tease for anything because normal things many developers say about any game that’s still current. Not really anything pertaining to us in the west. Definitely not enough “there” to create an article about, but the click got me here so.. there’s that.
@Poco_Lypso Well, if they are okay with releasing crap games then that's on them ultimately but they are losing me as a fan for years. I'm sorry, but I'm not buying crap games for me or my kids and this game is crap.
@drewber2635 Totally agree. If they give them time the game would sell even better because the word of mouth would pass like wildfire, but this kind of every year/few months survival of the Pokemon series is awful. I have completely left the series due to these poor games.
@FX29 Exactly. How this game is pushed out by Nintendo is beyond me. This game looks so bad WITH the day one patch. I'm not spending 60 dollars and giving them a pass. We have to stop giving them the pass.
Pokemon needs more dev time and less versions. These games used to be auto-buy for me but I'm too old to spend 60 dollars on a game that can't even hit 30fps. Thanks for the honest review.
@DoubleDate When you see a game like Xenoblade 3 for 60 then see a game like this for 60, it's simply not fair to charge the same for both. I know folks will say blah blah to justify why it should be 60, but a premium game is a premium game and this game is simply NOT premium enough for 60 dollars. Pure and simple.
Totally why I trust NintendoLife reviews. I've been saying that this game isn't worth the 60 dollars they're charging and I'm glad NintendoLife confirmed it as such. It's a game that honestly needed another year of development to be truly worth the 60 dollars because what I played from the demo is absolute TRASH.
@Rosona It’s just the facts. Everyone knows it. This is a mobile game they’re making us believe is a console game and they’re charging us full price. It’s insane.
This game is dead on arrival from the trash story alone. Seriously, the demo instantly saved me 60 dollars because of the absolutely atrocious story it was trying to setup. Not sure where the writers of old Squaresoft went, but apparently they can't find any since.
Alright, how hard is it to add more colors to the theme menus? Like seriously, why is that not a thing that is ever happening?
Also, hardly ANY games use the home button light(yes the home button has a ring around it that can light up) and I'm surprised we aren't able to utilize that better for things like the 3DS did.
Played an hour of this game on Apple Arcade and I just couldn't find a reason anyone would want to play this game. FURTHERMORE, I wondered how this game even got to the point where it was approved by SquareEnix as something to devote devs to. It's so bad, seriously don't waste your money.
I'm honestly taken back at how many people believe this is an "awesome" game. I love DQ, but this is a mobile game with no story and a boring loop they want us to pay 60 dollars(USD) for. Uh, no thanks. This looks at best a 29.99 game.
Calling it now, this game comes to mobile a year later with gacha added. Hell it's basically already built into the game.
I've been hype for this game since it was announced. I'm a big platform fan, I love SK, and I especially love rogue likes. Can't wait for this to drop.
@fenlix Very small amount of people(me) like Puzzle Roguelike games so I bet it just didn't hit that market enough. They are probably working on a big epic Shovel Knight platformer but these games will keep us busy until it's ready.
@CharlieGirl Pocket Dungeon is great. I beat it with SK and have been going back to replay it with the other Knights you unlock. Definitely a game to play!
@rex_rex The game doesn’t get hard honestly. If you want a challenge then hard mode is your best bet. I was over level for the entirety of the game and breezed by most opponent. Even the final boss is level 75 and I was 80 and had no issues at all.
Yeah, I would swap to hard if you want a proper challenge.
@Rykdrew If I'm skipping the text in a game that's a clear sign that I'm probably done playing it. The story has got to be somewhat there for me to care anymore. Interesting that some folks don't need any story.
I'm asking a legitimate question. Does it not feel like you're placed into a world without knowing what's happening when you skip? Because when I skip I always feel like I'm just going through the motions and it makes me even more likely to not play. I at least have to have some kind of reason to fight/play.
@Impoh This has been exactly my feelings lately with MOST JRPGs. Omori and Xenoblade 3 have been the only ones this year that actually made me crave to know more about what was happening. Triangle Strategy, Octopath Traveler, Bravely Default II, DioField(demo), and Harvestella(demo) have all left me feeling like I was baited into the game due to combat and continued to play just because I didn't want to lose my 60 dollars(Triangle/Octopath).
What happened to the folks that wrote Final Fantasy 7/8/9/10?? Why can't SquareEnix pull together some creative writers?
@Serpenterror To me, the story is a make or break for me. I'm 36 now and if I'm to spend 50+ hours on a game, I need it to be a journey where the story is at least half interesting.
This demo presented us with being a mercenary and you should do this stuff because you're asked to. The story intro was very short, like? I'm just wishing games gave us a better story is all. Feeling let down lately especially from SMT V.
