Re: Review: PAC-MAN MUSEUM+ - A Gaming Legend's Best Collection Yet

jgibson75

@farrgazer I played it on Xbox Series X (via Gamepass) and the input lag was very noticeable. I died many times due to the very poor directional response. I tried playing it using the D-Pad and the analog stick and it was rough with both input methods.
Such a shame.
I don’t know if every version of the game has this issue. But it was definitely a problem on Xbox (and lots of people were voicing their complaints in the reviews of the games in the Xbox store).

Re: Editorial: Rediscovering the Gems of the Wii U Library

jgibson75

I feel very much the same. Many of my friends give me a hard time because I even own one, let alone still play it on the reg.
I agree it has failed at being a successful system. Nintendo made quite a few missteps from the confusion around what the system was or wasn't (is it just an HD Wii?), to a poorly chosen name and a bumpy start to uses of the admittedly clunky though not without it's charms controller.

That being said, some fantastic games both big and small have graced the platform.

Splatoon was a breath of fresh air.
Pikmin 3 a worthy follow up to one of my favorite series born from the Gamecube era.
Bayonetta 2 is one of the most polished action games I've played in recent memory.
Mario Kart 8 may be my favorite since my beloved Mario Kart 64. And the added DLC only made the game better!
Same goes for Smash Bros.
I loved Yoshi's Woolly World and the two excellent HD remakes of two of my favorite Zelda games in Twilight Princess and Wind Waker.

And I am with you completely on my love of Super Mario 3D World. Sure, I want Mario Galaxy 3. But that didn't stop me from enjoying the heck out of 3D World.

There are series that didn't fare as well. Mario Party continues to find it's way back to what made the N64, Gamecube and Wii games so much fun.
I adore Star Fox. But try as I may, I can't get past what feels like a failed effort to justify the Control Pad by forcing it's functionality onto a game that it really just doesn't fit well with. Star Fox always felt smooth and fluid. SF0 feels clunky, unwieldy and takes the joy out of flying.
And Metroid was no where to be seen.

But the games that landed are set in my mind as classics. If the NX lacks backwards compatibility with Wii U games, and I suspect that will be the case, then my Wii U will akways have a place in my library.

Re: Poll: The GameCube is 15 Years Old - Pick Your Favourite Games

jgibson75

I knew I loved my GC but only picking 5 favorites was a lot tougher than I expected. Especially considering games like Mario Party, which I hadn't thought of in part cause I've not enjoyed the past few games in the series and in part because you don't think of them in the same league as your Zeldas or Metroids or even main line Mario titles.

But looking back on my GC years, some of the most fun I had was brutal games of Mario Party 4, 5 and 6 (and to a lesser degree MP7) with my friends.
We would get so pissed off at each other, cuss each other a blue streak, friendships were nearly destroyed... But we all laughed it off in the end and came back for more.

I once commented how crazy it was that we play so many versus split screen games like Halo where we are literally killing each others characters... and yet we never get as amped up or worked up or swear at each other more than we do when playing Mario Party. We invented new phrases just from those games, like when I came from last place to first and won the game by a narrow bonus star lead and told my friend, who was sure to win, that I just chainsawed his soul. That became a go to phrase.

Anyway, I love so many of these games, but most were solitary experiences. Nothing wrong with that. But this poll made me remember that a games greatness is not always in it's epic story, gripping action or any other measurements reserved for deciding where a game should sit in our best of lists. Sometimes it is about how it made you feel. How it helped grow, destroy and regrow your friendships... Things that are harder to quantify.

So all that to say I had to drop Eternal Darkness to make room for Mario Party on my list.

The other 4:
Zelda Windwaker
Skies of Arcadia
Luigi's Mansion
Pikmin

Re: Nintendo Download: 2nd June (North America)

jgibson75

@rushiosan I'm glad you like the Star Fox controls. I tried. I tried really hard. And I'll try again cause I love Star Fox. But so far, all the new controls do for me is take me out of the joy of flying and essentially ruined the game for me (and a lot of others).
They should have at the very least offered multiple control set ups so that even if you dislike the gyro controls you have more options. They did this in the past with games like Splatoon.
What is more important? Forcing a control scheme on people to prove the value of a controller on a system that is on it's way out? Or providing options so more people can enjoy what seems to be otherwise a solid game?
Hell, I'don't prefer a Wii Mote and nunchuck set up that let you pilot with the chuck and aim and shoot with the Wii Mote like a light gun. At least I wouldn't have to take my eyes off the screen and lose the thrill of flight. Which was always the highlight of the series for me.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

Re: Nintendo Download: 2nd June (North America)

jgibson75

@C-Olimar I adored the original Chibi Robo on GC. But every game since has failed to capture that same magic. Largely due to relying on gimmicks or failing to understand what people loved about the first game. Apparently Japan got a proper sequel on the DS that was supposed to be pretty good. Been thinking of importing it.
But in the states we ended up with Park Patrol on DS. Not a terrible game, but really was held back by the DS hardware limitations and the fact it was a poorly marketed Wal Mart exclusive. Then we get the AR Photo game for 3DS which got old fast. Not really much of a game. Then came Ziplash, which taken on it's own isn't a bad little action platformer, but it failed to capture the same charm of the original game.
I wish Nintendo would give us a proper sequel to games like this before writing them off. The reason sales aren't what they hoped is that these experiences fail to live up to the original game's charm and feel more like spin offs than a proper sequel.

Re: Tatsumi Kimishima Reiterates That Nintendo NX Is A New Way Of Playing Games

jgibson75

@thehoppypoppy and they announced some time ago that a Dragon Quest or Dragon Warrior game was being made for it. So we know between that and the new Zelda that it can't be too far removed from what we expect from a gaming console. I think there will be a new unique control method and or hybrid portable capabilities and possibly no disc drive. I think it is no coincidence that the new Nintendo rewards program only offers coins for digital game purchases.
Nintendo may decide to be the first to go all digital.

Re: Poll: Are You Confident About Nintendo's 3DS Focus for 2016?

jgibson75

I certainly feel the 3DS is showing it's age a bit. Especially for those of us not ready to upgrade to the New Nintendo 3DS. I mean, I would love to have one but I am wary of buying what will be my third 3DS model (started with a launch system. Later upgraded to an XL) this close to new hardware announcements that may or may not include a new handheld. And even if the NX does not include a handheld it can't be long before we see the successor to the 3DS.
That said, there are some games on my radar this year. The new Kirby looks great. I'm on the fence with Federation Force, especially hearing the devs say it was designed with the New 3DS features in mind. I'll be getting the third game in the Zero Escape series for sure. There are some downloadable games on my radar like Pocket Jockey and Box Boy 2. So I will still get mileage out of my 3DS. But I am ready for what is next.

Re: 10 Years On, Hideki Kamiya Still Doesn't Think He Could Better Okami

jgibson75

Are you kidding me? Of course I want Okami 2. Okami is one of my favorite games ever made. I bought it and beat it twice on PS2. I bought the Wii port and beat it two more times. I bought copies of the Wii port for my niece and nephew turning them into huge fans. I bought Okamiden and beat it. (It was a fun, charming follow up with some pretty impressive graphics for a D's game, but fell short of being as brilliant as the original. I still very much enjoyed it. If the port it to Wii U VC I'd buy it there.)
I bought the lovely PS3 exclusive HD remaster of Okami. I no longer have my PS3 so I really wish Capcom would port that over to PS4, Wii U or every system really so others can get a chance to see that game in HD.
So yeah. You could say I want Okami 2.

Re: Review: Star Fox Zero (Wii U)

jgibson75

Maybe if enough people hate on the controls they wiill patch in support for classic Star Fox controls. That should have at least been an option. Splatoon let you turn off gyro controls. I have never liked gyro controls. Pointing and motion with the Wiimote was doable, but in most cases I don't enjoy gyro motion as a means of aiming.

Re: Review: Star Fox Zero (Wii U)

jgibson75

@Xenocity I personally love a good on rails shooter now and then. I loved Sin and Punishment 2 and House of the Dead on Wii. I loved Panzer Dragoon Orta on Xbox. Don't get me started on Rez or the first 2 Star Fox games. I loved them! I don't mind that Star Fox has stuck with that style. But I am concerned about the controls. It seems they went out of the way to fix something that wasn't broken to begin with, all to justify the features of a control pad that is on it's way out and failed to succeed in the way it's predecessor the Wii mote did. At the very least they should have given us the options to play with standard controls the way Splatoon did.
I'm still buying it because I love this series and they don't make enough Star Fox games as it is. But I really hope the controls don't hinder my enjoyment of what sounds like an otherwise fun game.

Re: Soapbox: Nintendo Was Wrong To Turn Its Back On The Wii Remote

jgibson75

I loved the Wiimote and nun chuck set up. It was comfortable to me and very versatile. I used it for many games even when motion wasn't a feature. Smash Bros, Mario Kart, etc.
I think they should have launched the Wii U with a better name, like The Wii 2 or something as simple as Wii Next or something that more clearly indicated that it was new (yet backwards compatible with Wii software).
Then I would have included a Wiimote Plus and nun chuck along with the Gamepad. Or scrapped the pad altogether and included a pro controller to show core gamers that it wasn't only a motion control system.
I would have supported Wii controllers for backwards compatibility, but require a Wiimote Plus controller or add on for all Wii 2 games so that going forward you know all Wii 2 owners have the same controller capabilities. That way developers making a game with motion controls know the install base has the 1:1 functionality.
I honestly think if they dropped the Control Pad, doubled down on Motion Plus 1:1 controls while exercising some 3rd Party quality control then making sure they upped their online game and graphics they would have done better business.
Just my thoughts of course.

Re: Review: Hyrule Warriors Legends (New 3DS / 3DS)

jgibson75

I am buying it but will likely leave it until I get a New N3DS. I am busy with Final Fantasy Explorers anyway. I hope to get a New N3DS XL in a month or two. I was sort of holding out for a color I like or maybe til Nintendo drops the curtain on NX. If NX does somehow include a new portable, I may skip getting a New N3DS or wait for a price drop.

Re: Nintendo Download: 24th December (North America)

jgibson75

Mario Galaxy, and it's sequel, are possibly my favorite Mario games. And I've been playing Mario games since the original Mario Bros and Super Mario Bros released in the US. But since I still have my Wii copy, I'll pass on the digital especially at that price. It isn't that SMG as a game is not worth $20. It is worth that and more. It is a fantastic game with a lot of content. But the fact that in most areas the physical copy can be purchased new or used for the same price or less makes it seem overpriced for the current market.

Re: Masahiro Sakurai Talks About the New Fighters Soon to be Added to Super Smash Bros.

jgibson75

Bayonetta was enjoyable. Bayonetta 2 was brilliant. I have no problem with her coming to Smash. But I have zero interest in yet another Fire Emblem character. I know many peoples dream characters were likely unrealistic or at the very least difficult to work out a licensing deal for them. But they still have so many options from their own stable of characters to pick from. Who wouldn't want an Inkling from Splatoon? Or Midna from Twilight Princess? Or Wolf from Star Fox? I could go on. Even Indie game favs like Shovel Knight or one of the awesome Steamworld characters like Rusty.

Re: Talking Point: Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS Set a Standard That'll Be Tough to Follow

jgibson75

I still wish for a better solo/story/campaign like mode for this series. But as far as pure multiplayer brawling fun, this has been my favorite entry and I've owned them all. As for the future, I love seeing add on characters. I didn't get too into customizing my Moi fighters, so all the extra costumes are not a big draw for me. But I know others who loved that stuff. Even if the next Smash is basically this Smash with fresh graphics, roster, stages and better online functionality I'd buy it.

Re: Editorial: It's Not Fun to Criticise Nintendo Games, But It's Been Unavoidable in 2015

jgibson75

I too love Nintendo. But as you said, them being Nintendo does not give them a pass. If they release a mediocre game, it deserves to be rated as such. Does Mario Tennis Wii U getting scored a 5 from this site mean you can't still buy it and even love it? No. Of course not. I think far to often gamers treat reviews as either validation or rebuke of our own purchase decisions or personal tastes. It is the fuel behind much if the console fanboy flame wars. Most of us are not rich. We often have to choose between one system or game over another. And we want to feel as though we made the 'right' choice. So we take insult at opinions that differ from our choices. But there is no truly right or wrong point of view here. There can be a general consensus. But ultimately reviews should be seen as a tool to help us decide the best buying options for us. But you don't have to agree with them. In the end, what matters is are you happy with your purchase.
