It's been nearly a month since the last 3DS system update, and many gamers have no doubt been getting quite worried over the state of their 3DS software, stability-wise. Fortunately, Nintendo software staffers have swept in to save the day again, crafting a new update that should stabilize the 3DS OS even further.
As always, this update is required for continued usage of Nintendo Network and eShop services, but who wouldn't want to partake? After all, System Version 10.6.0-31 is somehow more stable than 10.5.0-30, and it would be a real shame to miss out on all of the fuss. The update should take minutes – if not seconds – to install, so stop what you're doing and go stabilize your 3DS.
What do you think? Can you handle the stability level the 3DS OS has reached? What are some features you'd like to see added in a larger update? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

"so stop what you're doing and go stabilize your 3DS."
I DON'T WANNA!
Finally, some good old stability pill for my new 3DS.
I'm pretty sure the sarcasm in these articles is going to continue until, at last, the news of a Nintendo system update is just the word STABILITY repeated hundreds of times.
10.4 is 29, 10.5 is 30 and 10.6 is 31. Why they even bothered using the version number of 10.X when they tagged the 2 digits at the back?
Oh nice, my 3ds was starting to tilt.
I was having trouble balancing my checkbook. After this update I was able to place it on my 3ds and everything just fell into place.
Thanks Nintendo
My 3DS is now more stable than the PSN. Which honestly isn't actually saying much.
I am actually thankful for these stability updates. I work for a company where the tech department doesn't bother to update the systems and they are as unstable as hell. Crashes several times during the day and slow as snail.
That's when I think of Nintendo and their stability updates and Thank God for 'em!
I've owned several devices, and in their lifetime, The Windows PC (Crashed a few times). Android (Crashed a few times). PSVIta (Froze one or two times). 3DS (Never!)
The 3DS never crash or froze and I've had it since it's launch!
I always think of Mr. Ed because...a horse is a horse, of course of course....(because i always think of a horse stable when i think of stable stability????)
Insert stability jokes
what I been waiting for.
I don't think my old 3DS can handle all this stability. Ninty really wants me to upgrade to N3DS don't they?!
It's dangerous play without updating
Take this
"Stability Update Version 10.6.0-31"
@wishm
My Vita became such a buggy mess, not even showing my games. After several reboots, I sold it, and then used the same memory card in my PSTV... And know what? It wasn't my data. All my games were there. It was the Vita. So yeah. Thats sad.
Keep the stability coming Nintendo, my 3DS is working great.
What i want implemented in the updates?
To get the letterbox thing back (tho it will never return because of pedos)
No limit of icons per folder
Make the 3ds support of removal of the sdcard without showing error and rediscover the installed games when the sdcard is plugged in again without needing to turn off the 3ds.
Soon it'll be saitama levels of stability
@Shugo well, I'm no expert, but I'd assume making sure the system is secure and working as it should (aka making it harder to hack and exploit) are also part of this fabled "stability".
My 3DS can't handle this much stability!
I wonder what backdoor did they close now instead of doing an actual update that matters?
Nintendo and also Sony&MS should be more open about what do these "stability" updates do.
I hope next month when Nintendo Account comes, there will be a big update for 3DS and Wii U that shakes things up like the friend list management, region free software update etc.
Yay, more stability. I'll add it to the pile.
They just fixed the SOAP process the web browser uses, so it probably fixes the exploit it had.
All these 'stability' updates are just a cover to block entry points in homebrew.
When was the last good update that had any meaning? The badge arcade one? And before that, 9.2 with the themes?
Putting the stability jokes aside, here's a handy list of what was changed in the newest update:
Network communication API updates
IR module
NFC module
Internet Browser and Home Menu fixes
(also several Japan-exclusive updates in this pack... like the Mii Maker, or the 3DS Camera/Music, hmm)

@Waninoko It would be nice if these system updates addressed exactly what was being updated. I know most people don't care but I actually like to read what updates contain; I do it when I update apps on my phone, especially (although many app developers don't care to inform users either). It's not necessary but would be slightly informative if nothing else. Oh well. Goody-two-shoes Nintendo probably just stays mum about it as most of the time these "stability" updates are probably better read as "disabling homebrew and unauthorized tampering of our hardware" updates.
3DS is now more stable than an elephant.
Stability?? I just need my shoulder buttons to work once in a while and touch screen work when playing picross. But that doesn't seem to be fixable
@Bunkerneath Picross is actually ideally played using buttons as you don't have to change between the pencil and the eraser constantly, and it's also more accurate.
At its core, this update is just to block homebrew exploits it seems.
I'm lucky to still have Cubic Ninja.
I was getting rather worried my 3DS might fall out of the drawer I keep it in, since it'd been quite a few weeks since the last stability update. Glad to hear it'll be sitting rock steady once more!
I was worried for a moment - lack of stability ,
etc.
There's no stability like Nintendy stability!

You wanted some stability jokes? Okay.
"Yo 3DS eez so stable dat yo mama once was about to fell on her fat @ss and held onto it and she regained her posture."
"We'ah yo 3DS is so stable dat the Pikachu on the official VC version of da Pokémon Yellow title screen said 'Aw snap mah ni@#a Reggie patched pirated ROMs again'!"
"Dayum son, yo 3DS is so stable dat I could throw it in a building on fire and it coulda stabilize da temperature on its own."
"An' yo 3DS so stable dat Bill Trinen could use it fo' his table's broken leg."
"Das nothing bruh, yo 3DS eez so stable dat Isaac fro' Golden Sun and Andy fro' Advance Wars said 'Not this s#it again, Nintendo's nevah allowing us on da 3DS at deez rate'!"
"Dayum, an' yo 3DS so stable dat gyro controls don't even work when you tilt de console."
"Well yo 3DS so stable dat it coulda sinked da entire Malaysian pirate fleet alone."
"An' yo 3DS is so stable dat you coulda use it if you need some extra patches fo' ya pants."
"Das nuthin', yo 3DS so stable dat fuggeen' mount Kilimangiaro said 'Look out ni##as, we've got a bad@ss ova here'."
"Fo' realsies, yo 3DS eez so stable dat de Strip o' Gaza said it woulda help stabilize dat country."
"An' yo 3DS so stable dat it woulda be easier gett'n into Fort Knox dat playin' an ill'gul ROM on dat thing."
Yep, your Italian buddy is off his meds.
@Kolzig I'm not sure its been a while since I read up on it but I'm sure that Nintendo all ready said Nintendo Account will handle friends lists but later in the year... which just so happens to be when a lot think the NX is launching.
Basically I'll be super surprised if the Wii U/3DS get the FULL Nintendo Account I.E. friend lists, before NX (or ever really).
@Silithas yes I wish I could get letterbox back. It irritates me how Nintendo and fans make a fuss of Nicki and the whole art style used in letterbox (they were recently used as badges in Bage Arcade) when the software can't be used.
Oh boy thanks for not much Nintendo.
The stability of the 3ds is just mind blowing. With all these updates, you'd think it was competing with Microsoft!
@Kiyata_Hamasaki
"Oh, hey there Mr. Spencer."
"Mr. Fils-Aime."
"Taking the same elevator, huh."
"Yep."
"So how are things going at your workplace?"
"Good, everyone's hyped up for the latest Xbox One update."
"Adding more features?"
"Actually, no. Just a few patches to mess with people pirating their console, and by their I mean ours."
"Wait, we're totally updating our consoles today, too!"
"Adding more features?"
"If by features you mean..."
[both, in unison] "System stability!"
"Score one for updates focused on nothing else than the war on piracy!"
"Fist pound, bro!"
I'm glad that these updates block hackers and flash carts.
@abbyhitter
It'd be even better if these updates also brought something new to the table, something to make it worthwhile for the honest consumers as well.
Now, Chris Rock once said, "So you've never been in jail, what do you want, a cookie?", but if I see an update forced down my throat, it can't hurt if the update is also useful to me.
I could put up with dozens of updates if Nintendo bothered to lift the WiiU-only embargo for GBA VC games (especially considering limiting them to the WiiU didn't turn out to be the system seller Nintendo had hoped for; might as well gain some money by making said games actually portable again).
Level up! Your stability went up by 10!
@Nintendian The number at the back is the browser version included in the update. It's been increasing recently because Nintendo is really trying to get rid of all of the exploits in the browser.
Stability intensifies! Careful Nintendo, you might hurt someone with your Weapons of Mass Dysfunctional-function!
@Bunkerneath my regular 3DS' shoulder buttons have been broken for years now. I've had it since launch. I upgraded to the regular new 3DS and its shoulder buttons seem much more stable. No pun intended
Stability intensifies.
Frankly, for every update Nintendo puts out, the community comes up with another exploit. Not to mention that the people who use Custom Firmware don't even have to worry about updating since they emulate their NAND.
Flashcarts haven't been relevant for years, since if you have the whole CFW thing you can just install games and they appear on the home menu like regular icons. Hate to say it, but Nintendo's losing the war on piracy.
Not in favor of piracy obviously, just trying to educate.
@Silithas you have miiverse now. the icons thing is reasonable. do you want your games to corrupt? just turn off your 3ds when removing sd cards. you want an unmount feature for your 3ds like an android phone? why? is turning it of such a hassle? it takes 30-40 seconds to turn it off and on again. is your time really that important?
The fact that the 3DS is region locked encourages me to pirate the heck out of it... Hmm... good idea...
My Gameboy pocket has had zero updates in its life time and is more stable than the 3DS. ^_^
@Silithas "Make the 3ds support of removal of the sdcard without showing error "
I don't know any device that you can do this safely with, even a computer. You should always assume that data is being read from or written to a removable device, which makes it dangerous to remove with the power on.
I will never tire of these stability updates.
They need to start stocking systems of the 3DS family in hospitals and ambulances. Plenty of patients could use the sweet stability.
...!?!? OH CRAP, I just saw a dimensional tear open up nearby!!! The 3DS is becoming too stable, Nintendo! You have to stop! There must always be a balance between Law and Chaos in the universe! The 3DS is becoming too stable, it's going to tip that balance if it gets any more stable!
My 3ds is so stable, it could land on a comet...
@MarinaKat If Nintendo Account is meaningful then maybe there'll be a UI change in March when MyNintendo comes along.
"Guess what it does?"
Absolutely nothing, as usual ;O;
Stability! We need more stability!!
OH MY GAWD, MY 3DS IS TURNING INTO SUPER SAND 10.5.0-30!
It must defeat the evil Majin Vita, with super stability comes great power to win over customers and fans! that and so stable that it can't fall over.
@wishm Mine has actually frozen a few times with a black screen, both my small 3DS and my New 3DS. Scared the hell out of me.
I was walking around Monday at work with my new 3DS in my pocket, and several times I thought, "Man, things just don't feel very stable today."
Thank you Nintendo, for hearing me mentally cry out for more stability in my life. I feel so much better now.
Wait where's the image of Paper Mario and the hammer?
B-but if my 3DS is this stable, how am I supposed to "tip the scales" in Fire Emblem?!
(running out of stability jokes xD)
@TeslaChippie My surface pro 4 can easily remove the micro sdcard without issues while it's on.
Man, these system update articles just keep getting more and more sarcastic.
It would be nice if Nintendo could implement a special ringing implement that made dogs stop moving...
If they did that the 3DS would be so much more stay bell
Thank God. Idk what I would do without all of that stability!
My 3ds is so stable that a horse moved in.
Stability my butt. The only reason we get these "updates" is to stop hackers. I know what this update did. It stopped browserhax from working. Meaning there's no way to downgrade to 9.2 in order to install custom firmware. Luckily I'm still at 10.3, and could go the custom firmware route if I wanted. I wish nintendo would stop doing this. It's not like installing custom firmware hurts their sales.
How will the NX compare with all this 3DS stability?!
@Bryon15 You can still downgrade since nintendo is stupid to not update the native firmware. The only way for people to downgrade with 10.4+ firmware 3ds is to hard mod it. Requires soldering skills and connecting a 3ds motherboard directly to a computer. Luckily, my 3ds is already modded and nintendo can't stop me. Also, if nintendo was truthful, they would look bad for business and for investors. So they use words like "increase stability" to reassure everyone that nothing is wrong with the 3ds.
@abbyhitter this update does absolutely nothing other than give more work for hackers to work on and patching 2 exploits (browserhax/menuhax). My modded/jailbroken 3ds still works even after I updated.
@Zebetite Well, they use the word "stability" to cover up that their system security is really bad. Also if nintendo was truthful and says the updates were to increase system security and stop hackers, then this would look bad for business and for investors.
@Kolzig The browser entry point and the home menu entry point (through theme ext.data), if I remember right.
@Cooroxd well that sounds overly difficult and frustrating. I sure am glad I didn't go above 10.3
@BulbasaurusRex because we all know these so called "updates" are bs and does nothing to enhance user experience
@Bryon15 It's not too difficult to solder a couple wires to a motherboard and connect it to computer. There's a youtube on it btw. However, it all comes down on how experienced you were in highschool shop class. Or you can pay someone to do it for you lol. You should definitely downgrade your 10.3 and get custom firmware eg rxtools/reinand. You'll be more at ease.
@Cooroxd THAT'S THE JOKE
@Shikinouta All nintendo is trying to do now is to decrease the amount of 3ds with exploitable firmware (10.3 or less) by making people update it. Also to try to prevent people who are new to the underground 3ds scene to become hackers/pirates.
@Zebetite I know, i'm just educating the people here who doesn't know that their 3ds is potentially exploitable. It's up to them if they want to use their 3ds for good or for evil XD
BS. I just dropped my 3DS on the floor and it landed on one of its edges like it always does.
@MyLegGuy Damn it, that joke is so old, but it still gets me!
@firechicken98 Stabilizing the cosmos and the orbit around the stars? No problem. Stabilizing the Middle East? PFFFFF even the 3DS isn't that stable... Wait... Is that Nintendo's master plan!?
@Nintendian The first numbers are the current 3DS system version number. The last two digits only indicate the web browser version included.
How about an update people actually want? Like storing items in Pokemon Bank?
Finally, some good stable version for my new 3DS. Really appreciate it
