No one is going to use this a streaming service for Cuphead and Overwatch. That's is suicide. Damien, think turned based RPG, visual novel, or point and click adventure.
@GravyThief System on a chip, is a chip that tries to clone all of the NES/SNES chips features, but using only one cheap chip. The chip is not the same as the original chips in the old consoles. These always have poor emulation, because old systems like this had so many different programming tricks and cartridges had add on chips sometimes. Almost all System on a chip consoles have errors with sound. All of them released to date cannot play every game released for the consoles, especially where homebrews, hacks, new games, translations, and games with weird chipsets are concerned.
FPGA, is a field programmable gate array. These are chips which basically reprogram themselves to be exact replicas of the chips used on classic consoles. These systems can be a bit more expensive than competitors, but they play absolutely everything a real console can play, and exactly as a real console would play it. Currently the only mainstream systems that use this are the $185 Retro USB AVS, and the $449 Analogue NT Mini. Both of which only play NES cartridges (Although the NT Mini can play older systems ROMs (example: Atari 2600) via SD card, due to community support). The Analogue Super Nt which plays SNES games is currently up for preorder at $190.
The Retron 5 uses software emulation. It is basically a computer running a custom OS that allows you to dump your ROMS from your cartridges onto the computer, and then it uses a software emulator similar to (actually sometimes exactly the same illegally stolen code) your home PC to play the games. It has the potential to run every game for supported systems, but that all depends on the systems software being updated. As of right now the Retron 5 supports many more games than a system on a chip console would, but it doesn't support all games one could potentially play, such as new games released in the last few years, new translations, new hacks, ETC. They do update the system a lot with popular games, but many obscure games that have been out for years are still not supported and probably never will be. The Retron 5 suffers from the same problems as any other computer software emulation, sometimes there are unintended glitches, sometimes sound is wrong, sometimes colors are wrong. The advantage is many consoles in one system, and many customize-able features in the software.
@Akropolon Not sure what you are talking about. Hardly anyone will pick the Switch version? Wut? Everytime there is a rumor a new game may get a Switch port, all I see is comments from people saying they will hold out for the Switch version. Have you opened the comments section on IGN or Gematsu, when there is a Dragon Ball FighterZ or Monster Hunter article?
Not to mention games like Xenoverse have already proved you wrong. It has been out on every system and PC. Everyone already had a more powerful way to play it, but it is selling great on the Switch.
You honestly don't think there is a large number of people that are going to choose portability over 60fps? It's a topic that is already being debated and it seems about 50/50. Half of gamers want portability over graphics. That will eat sales.
@Akropolon I think you are both wrong. Sony doesn't make money on console sales, so it doesn't matter if a consumer chooses between the two, or buys both.
The competition is in software sales. Now that Nintendo is pulling in some third parties, they are a threat to Sony financials. There aren't going to be many people that buy Wolfenstein twice. Most of the copies sold on Switch, will be pulling money out of Sony and Microsofts pockets.
@Damo There is no comparison at all really. He's using an x86 processor. No matter how close the two processors would benchmark next to each other, it is completely irrelevant. The hardware is apples to oranges. They have completely different instruction sets, even if they are the exact same power, they are going to run games completely different.
This is a just for fun video, and nothing to do with the real world.
It's like racing a monster truck and mustang. What's under the hood can be exactly the same, but how they drive depends on road conditions, not linear output.
@Manjushri I'd say your 30 years experience is wrong this time. Several places have already leaked stores getting several times more units than they did NES classics. Some reports are out that some Targets will get 300 units.
@thesilverbrick I'm the opposite. I have bought many of the modern games, but always get too bored to finish them. For me they seem to lack soul. I bought the gen 1 games for 3ds and had a blast a playing through. When I was a kid I grew out of it after gen 1, so I'm really excited to play Gold and Silver for the first time, in that classic engine.
@Pupito Just be warned, all the old controllers have a Dpad issue. It makes games like Contra a Nightmare. You have to be super precise pressing a direction and careful not to press too hard, or else , for example.. pressing down too hard will make you press left or right at the same time.
So imagine trying to duck a bullet, but instead you walk forward straight into it.
This has been a major issue with everything since their very first controller.
The Amazon description of these new controllers though, gives me hopes they finally fixed the issue.
This game is a great follow up to Double Dragon II for $6.
4/10 review is way beyond harsh. Harsh would be a 5 or 6. 4 is almost a lie, even though it's an opinion. 6.5 would be fair if you really took into consideration all the negatives as the spotlight of the score. 7 is pretty realistic.
I've played the game and would give it a personal 8/10, but for a general audience I'd give it a 7. Reading your text review, I find nothing that warrants a 4, which in game reviews means good awful, and one of the worst games of the year. 4s are basically unplayable games. Your review text did not make that seem to be the case.
I also don't understand the part about you praising Double Dragon Neon. That game though it had a few fans, was pretty much universally panned and did poorly. It was a mind numbingly slow mashy mess. This game at least feels tactile and moves along at a good pace.
You really are doing a disservice to DD fans, with this review. The general public may not enjoy a game that sticks so close to it's retro roots, and isn't really refined for the modern era... But that is why some people will love it, and that should be heavily noted in the review. Fans of the NES games will most likely like this game. Arcade fans will be hit and miss as with the general public.
I will just say.. opinion or not, a 4 is just wrong. That is succumbing to the internet hype train, that is not reality.
@BraveFencerZan I haven't heard the controls are sloppy on DD4. Heard that for DD Neon. Only thing I have heard, is that it's too easy, and it has screen tearing on PS4. I have it on PS4 and I liked it. Feels just like an old NES DD. Though it is indeed a bit easier. It's short for a modern game, and a lot of people were upset it wasn't based on the arcade games.
I think there is confusion as to what the term means. Only in a classical Greek sense, does golden age relate to the best period. As far as pop culture or technology goes, the golden age is always where they technology or cultural icon first became popular. Example comics golden age isn't the best comic books, it's the first. The golden age of porn is the 70s... Definitely not the greatest porn achievements. TV is the 50s, etc
Many already refer to the golden age of gaming starting in the late 70s.
@holygeez03 Indeed it was for the headphone jack. But people often connected the headphone jack to their tv or audio equipment, because it output stereo sound. The main av port oddly only used mono.
If someone could answer this I would greatly appreciate it. Is Strikers 1945 ported to the Switch with a balanced lives and continues system? Or do they just give you unlimited credits, and you boringly slog your way through to the end without effort?
@ALinkttPresent I wouldn't say that. All the handheld entries you mentioned are ports, with the exception of 9.
8 of the main series games launched on consoles, and we're o ly years later ported to handhelds, so the series is most definitely grounded in consoles.
That being said you missed some games. Every main series Dragon Quest has been on a handheld, 1-11.
@MagnaRoader Most probably don't make sense for the time period. But then again it takes place in Romania, and they speak English. And the English they speak isn't from the time period. The fact is, if they spoke English from the 1400s, no one would even understand what they are saying. So the curse words they use fir the rest of the language in the show.
Game list is a bit odd. All the Mortal Kombats listed together, but other numbered entries are split up. In the article it says all the Sonic games are included, but I don't see Sonic 3 on the list.
People earlier pointed out Altered Beast was listed twice. I guess someone went in and edited that, but didn't bother proof reading the article again to make sure it was accurate.
Someone's drunk. Comments section is basically the editing staff. Maybe give trusted site users some limited editing access?
@Tetsuro Everything you claimed as fact, is not fact, but your own opinion, (except computerized animations, which no one gives a crap about except you, and certainly doesn't warrant lowering a review score) of which most don't agree with. I have been playing 2D fighters since they debuted in arcades, and Rock is one of my favorite SNK characters. Sorry dude, but your personal opinion isn't magically facts, because you want it to be.
@TenEighty Hardware driven or not, it is still emulating. The question is, if they went with an FPGA, or a NOAC for their hardware emulation. Given the price, I would guess NOAC, which would mean the same problems their consoles have had for years, only 96%+ compatibility, poor sound, bad colors, glitches, no compatibility with future games such as Homebrew.
If they pull off an FPGA for $40 I would be shocked and in line to buy one.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Who wants to bet the price is higher in Europe because of your tax system, which provides much better social services than the USA. I'll sell you all the game products you want at US retail and ship them to you for free if you pay my family's medical expenses.
@Xilef Because the eShop and Steam have vastly different libraries, and though you may want to stream some games sometimes, you won't always want to or be able to stream a game.
@masterLEON So you have unlimited virtual quarters? That is a bummer. I'll stick to the fighting games then. Unlimited life in run n guns and gallery shooters is boring.

I know the whole reason the media did this is because of the whole Game Boy DS thing, which the media also misrepresented, and everyone else followed suit. The DS did not replace the GBA either, it was a new tier, of dual screen handhelds. It was not of the Game Boy line, but again, this doesn't mean the Gameboy Advance was going to live forever.

@bolt05 Yeah it's BS. If they are going to offset them, at least do it in the direction your thumb is naturally aligned. They felt the need to change a part of controller that worked just fine, into something that makes playing a pain. They killed a buyer in me.
@ShadowForks The game isn't like most APKs. Mario Run requires a constant internet connection to validate it. This would require the games software to be hacked. This would probably take anywhere from 3 months to 3 years depending on how tough it is to crack. By then anyone who would have paid probably already did.
This list seems very incomplete. I am assuming it will be heavily updated. Anyway, if you are looking for a 4K TV, best deals are on LeEco. They have coupons to get hundreds of dollars off a TV, and those coupons are stackable with other coupons you win on their online spin wheel . I am getting a 4K HDR TV for $350.
@HappyMaskedGuy To be fair, your first post was way more snarky than his. Just people having fun. Pretty sure fun isn't that detrimental to the human race.
@chardir I'm pretty sure it has to do with the power output to the controller port of the NES mini. This thing has lights and variable turbo settings. Probably needs to draw more power than is output by the ports. Same reason the wireless controllers most likely don't work as well.
Face buttons off set in the wrong direction. Seriously trying to make this as unergonomic as possible eh Nyko? And what is up with that d-pad? Next time consult someone who plays classic games. A wireless controller would have been awesome, but this one is useless for the platform heavy console where holding down B to run while tapping A to jump at the same time, is a constant endeavor.
I'm guessing it will be multitouch, but retail games will not be allowed to use touch. I am betting Nintendo will have different sections to its online store. A retail game section, a virtual console section, and an app section similar to Google Play Store. Nintendo will have its smartphone games available in the app section, and you will probably see candy crush and Hearthstone there.

Re: Nyko Thinks Cords Are Gnarly, Offers The Miniboss For The NES Classic Edition Instead
I'll take the extension cables instead thank you.
Re: Report Focuses on Nintendo Switch Touchscreen and IR Pointer on Joy-Con Controller
