Retro-Bit has been highlighting a number of products at CES 2017 that we've been covering throughout the day. The final part to cover is the Retro-Bit Generations Portable, which is expected in July for $69.99.
If the name sounds familiar, that's because this is a handheld iteration of the Retro-Bit Generations console. We were critical of the console last year due to notable performance issues - this is a system that has licensed games from major publishers, including titles originally released on Game Boy, NES, Mega Drive / Genesis, SNES and arcades. The problem is that, when emulating the later or more powerful systems in particular, we reckon it falls short.
Hopefully the portable will do better - its price actually makes it $10 more than its predecessor, no doubt due to optimising the system for size and supplying the screen.
The jury will very much be out on this one - we'll see how well it performs later in the year.

Hmmm, lets hope they pick up a bit on the arcade games emulation.
If they don't fix the framerate issues on Merc, Super R-Type, and Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts then I probably won't get this, the Retro-Bit Generations was a horrible mess of an emulator machine.
Oh, gosh...
So many Retros.
Year 2017 = Year of Retro clones.
This just looks like it was cast from the same casing as the Neo Geo X handheld.
@Anti-Matter And hopefully the "Year of the new Retro game" too.
2016 would have been a better year for me but now Nintendo's back to compete for my time and purse
@Shiryu Let's hope the emulation doesn't suck this time.
Can't imagine the emulation being really good, but who knows?
Ive noticed lately more and more companies utilising what was the Neo geo X shell for various handhelds. The retro bit is utter garbage and this looks just the same.
@mikegamer Let us hope there is a little more power under the hood.
I would of have bought the home console but scathing reviews put me off. I will wait to see this reviewed but can imagine It wont be any better than the home console.
Hmm, someone at Nintendolife has Retro-stock?! All those articles all of a sudden, don't you guys go a bit overboard?
Am I the only one who dreams that the Switch is hacked and become the ultimate hardware to emulate a lot of old games, from Nes to PS1, like a Raspberry Pi do ? Just imagine that. For one second. With the Switch portable/home concept fully used. With all the controllers possibilities. See what I mean ?
I think I could buy a second Switch just dedicated to that
@smashboy2000 Why not just do that with the Wii U? You know it won't work with Switch. Why? One the Wii U is dead now and likely Ninty won't going to release any more firmware update for it so a hack that broke all legality to that system is possible. The Switch is what Nintendo is giving all their focus on now, any hack or exploit for that would be a waste, by the time you know it firmware update will be made to quickly dispose of that opportunity.
@retro_player_22 That's exactly why I say I would buy a second Switch just for that. To block its firmware evolution.
It would be the ultimate retro machine because you could take it with you everywhere, play on a good quality screen and with great controls. Or play on your tv. It would ´t be as cheap as those retro-console we see in stores, like the retro5 or the one in this news, or the neo geo X, etc etc.
I don't see the point on transforming a Wii U into a hacked retro console. A Raspberry Pi would be enough. They would both lack the nomad functions of a Switch.
You could also argue that my dream retro console already exist : the nvidia shield. But it would lack the physical controls on-the-go that the Switch has.
So I stay on my position : if someone succeed into hacking the Switch, it would become the ultimate retro-console
@Shiryu I'll probably get a Raspberry Pi 3 instead lol, I don't trust this company anymore.
@mikegamer Fair game.
Wide screen? Please tell me you can toggle the 16:9 to 4:3. If not, this thing is instant garbage.
A widescreen on a device full of 4:3 games? No thanks, since just that alone shows the level of care invested into this, which is very little.
