Re: Feature: So, What Happened To Super Mario Galaxy 2?

georgesdandre

I don't have a theory, I just hope it shows up in the near future. SMG & SMG2 are both near perfect games. I couldn't choose one over the other. Where the original had all the new concepts and originality going for it, the second one added some new mechanics with Yoshi and turned things up and let the level designers really go wild. Even if it was really made up of ideas left on the editing room from the first game, it was a perfect sequel.

Re: Switch Is Getting An All-New Wonder Boy Game In 2021

georgesdandre

I loved the first three Wonder Boy as a youngster in the arcades in the 80s. The first one was for me at the time the best looking and most advanced side scrolling action platform game at the time alongside Ghosts n' Goblins. You fought a boss at the end of every fourth level. I never completed this game. At best I could make it past the fifth boss on one credit.

The second one was Monster Land, a totally different game. One of the deepest most engrossing experiences I'd had with videogames up till then. In hindsight it was like a side scrolling RPG lite with emphasis on platforming which one could finish in half an hour or so. It was great.

Wonder Boy III was a totally different game once again. An auto-scrolling game with levels alternating between a platforming section followed a shmup style section at the end of which you fought a boss. I did not take to this game at first (after the brilliance of Monster Land) but warmed up to it (a little bit) eventually. Still think it was a poor sequel.

I didn't even know there was a WBIV. Haven't had a chance to play any of the WB games on switch. The remake of the first game is supposed to be very poor but the two "metroidvania" style are supposedly better. Should maybe try those.

Re: Soapbox: After Paper Mario: The Origami King, I Want More Comedy On Switch, Please

I think you owe Mr Bob the Cat from my Animal Crossing town a huge apology. Bob has made me laugh out loud so many times since late March and he still does on most days. I talk to him every day/ In fact some days I talk to him too much and he starts complaining he is seeing too much of me.

But to classify or pigeon-hole Bob as a "comedian" or any given type would be grossly unfair. Bob in not only mirthful and funny and making me laugh, he also makes me smile, ponder. He very often amazes me and makes me think like when he made a cry for help and asked me if I ever considered that he and I might not be real, and that we may just be characters in a video game. He even made me sad at times, like when he got depressed when I gave Billy the Goat his marching orders and he cried and told me that it's terrible when good friends like Billy get to leave town. I hope he forgave me.

So now then ... Bob and I are waiting for that apology.

Re: Feature: Keeping It Physical In A Digital Age

georgesdandre

With the exception of indie games, I still buy most major releases in physical format. I'm not going to attempt to justify this, as for the last several years it is really against my better judgment.

I am a compulsive collector, nay, a hoarder of things (not just games and consoles but also records/CDs, synthesisers/drum machines, books, DVDs etc). I am addicted to buying and collecting much more so than actually playing/using them. In fact I would need several lifetimes to fully appreciate what I already have backlogged and accumulated.

I desperately want to stop clinging on to physical things, just embrace my impermanence, live like a nomad, enjoy games/music/films/books to the maximum whenever I get to do so without attachment to physical objects and collect nothing but memories.

I'm neither upset nor satisfied by news such as these. These guys knew there was a high chance of this happening but they had nothing to lose. On the contrary, they got themselves a nice bit of publicity. Some people might end up taking an interest in what this "project ianus" ends up being. They will put all their assets to use. No work will go to waste. If it's good work they might end up getting noticed by some bigger developing team and land a job.

It's the equivalent a new band playing cover versions in order to learn to play and get better and also because they are instantly recognisable, before they start presenting their own work.

Re: Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition And Clubhouse Games Both Surpass 1 Million Sales

georgesdandre

I did buy Xenoblade Chronicles, even though my Wii copy is still sealed on my shelf. Felt this was a project I wanted to support though I don't know if or when I will get to play it. Can't say the same about Worldwide Games. I'm not in the target audience for that sort of thing (having said that ... I did buy 42 on DS, and for a time used it to play Backgammon online).

Re: UK Charts: Animal Crossing Leapfrogs Ghost Of Tsushima To Reclaim Number One

georgesdandre

@beazlen1 When I lived in the UK (1998 - 2008) Electronics Boutique/GAME employees would often try to talk me out of buying the Nintendo games I was looking at or which I took to the register, and into buying Playstation games instead. And not once had I asked for their advice or opinion. I witnessed them many times trying to dissuade parents from buying a gamecube for their kids and into getting a PS2.

Re: Street Fighter's Producer Yoshinori Ono Is Leaving Capcom After Almost 30 Years

georgesdandre

Street Fighter II: The World Warriors was the first and only game which I ever stood in a queue for in order to play. (And it was a cabinet with just three buttons at the time.) Eventually I was to become so obsessed and so good at it that the older kids at the arcade had to physically bully me (blow cigarette smoke in my eyes, lift me up by arms and legs and pull me away from the cabinet etc) in order to ever beat me.

I tried to recapture the magic of those days by buying SFIV and even SFV on consoles but I just couldn't get into it at all. I even bought an expensive arcade stick. The excitement died before it began. It seems there was a time and a place for 1 on 1 fighting games. For me it was the early-mid 90s in the arcades.

Happy retirement Mr Ono. Thank you for the magical memories.

Re: Paper Mario Producer Says "It's A Necessity" To Change The Combat System In Every Entry

georgesdandre

@DoktorTotenKopf I still can't believe what Nintendo did to AlphaDream. After four incredible Mario & Luigi RPGs they lumped a forced Paper Mario tie-in on them ... and then had them remake their own games (which were not that old and perfectly fine as they were) to release on the 3DS/2DS which was beyond dead at that point ... and then let them go bankrupt after those games sold poorly (what else did they expect?). How I would love a new Mario & Luigi on Switch!

Re: Animal Crossing: New Horizons Has Sold Over 22 Million Copies

georgesdandre

This is the point when something has crossed over from being merely a videogame, to becoming a cultural phenomenon similar to the likes of Pokemon, Minecraft, The Sims, Grand Theft Auto, Wii Sports and others.

Personally I love the game, I love that it is doing so well, I love that they keep working on it and adding to it ... I love that it's the product of a diverse and talented team with a female lead director.

Re: Pikmin 3 Deluxe: 19 Glorious Screenshots, Box Art, File Size And More Details

georgesdandre

Not surprised but not exactly pleased either. Don't get me wrong, I am happy for this game to reach a much bigger audience on a new and successful platform. It is a great game and deserves to do so. Also very happy for people who want to replay it and no longer have a WiiU set up.

I was just foolish enough to hope for Pikmin 4 and now those hopes are dashed for good. None of the games which got ported from WiiU have got a sequel yet, and most probably never will. Where's Mario Kart 9, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3, New Super Mario Bros Switch, Bayonetta 3, Toad 2 ... Pikmin 4. And this strategy has been in place since the start with the Switch, no use blaming everything on the pandemic.

Re: Soapbox: There's No Shame In Playing On Easy, Even If You're A Pro

georgesdandre

So many people in these comments seem to think hard games put people off but easy games are for everyone so what's the harm. It's not true. It's the reason why I have been avoiding Kirby games which I would love to play and the reason while I'm playing Yoshi games thinking "this would have been so much more enjoyable if there was a little bit more challenge to it". But so be it, I accept that not every game is for me and I don't demand that it is.
