Animal Crossing: New Horizons may well have snapped up all of the headlines when Nintendo's recent financial earnings were released, but both Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition and Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics have also done rather well for themselves in their short time on sale.
Between their respective launches and the end of June 2020, both titles managed to surpass the one million sales mark. Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, which launched at the end of May, managed to generate 1.32 million sales in just over a month; Clubhouse Games achieved 1.03 million sales between 5th and 30th June.
They were two of just seven Nintendo titles which managed to sell one million units in the last quarter (April - June 2020). The other games on that list are Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Ring Fit Adventure, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Did you buy either of these two games when they launched earlier this summer? Tell us below.

This is very good news for the Xenoblade series, hopefully the next game gets an even bigger budget.
Maybe it's Nintendos strategy to have so much crap on the eShop. So everybody has to jump on stuff that is at least decent.
XC selling so much so fast is a surprise for me.
Good news for both.
I can see 51 Worldwide Games going on to become a 4 or 5 million seller.
Kinda shows how Switch owners were starved for Nintendo releases. Anything first-party is a sure fire hit nowadays.
@nmanifold That is what I wanted to say. You just did it way better.
@TheFullAndy 100%, it feels like one of those games that will slowly keep picking up sales throughout the switches life span
I find that interesting, as Xenoblade is a full price $60 title with a smaller target audience, whilst 51 Worldwide Classics is a cheaper $40 title with a wider casual target audience.
You'd expect the figures to be reversed, with the casual title having larger sales.
@RupeeClock
Xenoblade was always going to be frontloaded with a lot of sales up front then drop off massively.
51 Worldwide Games will sell consistently. It has been in and around the top 10 in the UK and Japan charts since release whereas Xenoblade is no longer there (at least in the UK where it dropped out of the top 40 weeks ago)
My son bought XC yesterday after we gave him a Switch for a HS graduation gift. He already watched me play it, and he watched Chuggaconroy 100% it, but he still wanted to play it for himself. It is that good. Tied for my favorite JRPG of all time, after FF7 held that spot for 20+ years. If he lets me borrow his for the 20 hour epilogue I imagine that would push it over the top.
We own a ton of board games, don't buy those to play as videogames.
Didnt the wii version do somewhere just under million overall and 3ds version did less.
Like that's a huge improvement.
Got both games, but got Assassin Creed Rebel collection on a sale and I've played that more than these two games combined.
Mahjong is pretty fun though.
@Yanina It's one of the best games ever made and is probably the first time it's had a large user base to have a go at along with a more general release.
How much did XC2 end up doing?
Really happy to see Xenoblade do that sort of a number already, especially when you consider its a re-release of a nearly 10 year old game.
So looking at it:
Xenoblade DE - 1.32m
Xenoblade 2 - 1.73m (as of last reported number)
X is the odd one out when you consider the low sales from being on the WiiU and possibly just not as appealing a title. I think is nailed on for a Switch Re-release at some point in the future.
I do wonder if we'll see more of a side story next rather than a mainline Xenoblade 3 as we tend to only get one new entry per console generation.
So Xenoblade Chronicles X DX a lock in?
I think Shulk will be really feeling it after this! (Sorry I had to)
@LUIGITORNADO As of March 2019, it had sold around 1.7 million copies. There is no official sales figures for 2020, but I'm guessing it has sold around 2 million by now.
@GrailUK pretty sure the wii user base was larger than the switches when xenoblade chronicles first launched
Anyone know how xenoblade chronicles remastered sold compared to the original on the wii? Considering the wii had a bigger user base
No lifetime update on Switch Troll and I sales?
Oh I see, time for a chain attack...
I'd have bought Clubhouse Games by now, but I keep getting mixed messages on whether it's a good package or not.
It’s almost not a surprise that Games sell well on the Switch. A large amount of software being released, and many of them selling well, is the clearest sign of a machines success.
@playstation_king Pretty sure it barely released in the US! And besides, totally different audience innit.
Not surprised about the successes of either of these games. Clubhouse managed to offer a virtual board game experience during the quarantine, while Xenoblade Chronicles gave players a pretty big game to play since Animal Crossing likely would've worn out some players by this time.
Awesome. I'm really feeling it!
Haven't bought either game yet, though I'd like to get XCDE someday.
@Yanina I almost wonder something along similar lines but it's more along the thought that with the lack of titles we have seen....they want to make sure that what they release sells very well.
@playstation_king I think they're referring more to active users as opposed to the raw number of people who own the console.
Xenoblade was released very late in the Wii's life, with dwindling numbers of people still using the console, whereas Definitive has released at the height of the Switch's popularity.
That's great news for Xenoblade! I'm amazed that Breath of the Wild is still selling so strongly. Usually the Zelda games' sales taper off.
Love them both especially XC DE. An all time fav of mine. Delicious gaming.
Huge numbers for XC DE considering it's a third release (second re-release) of a 10 year old game.
If you're Nintendo that's almost pure profit, continues to cement the brand in the public eye and filled a gap in the calendar. I'm sure they'll be very happy with that.
Well deserved! Both great games that I'm glad to have in ny collection.
@rjejr " He already watched me play it, and he watched Chuggaconroy 100% it, but he still wanted to play it for himself. "
This statement makes me want to pull tails off kittens.
@NathanTheAsian yeah, think of all the Switch Lite owners who picked up AC.... They probably wanted something else, so the board games would be a natural fit as would MK. I am a little surprised that Odyssey has not sold as strong. If I were new to the system, the natural inclination would be something along the lines of AC, bc it's new. Then MK8D, Odyssey and maybe even NSMBU or Donkey Kong just bc they are familiar franchises.
I did buy Xenoblade Chronicles, even though my Wii copy is still sealed on my shelf. Felt this was a project I wanted to support though I don't know if or when I will get to play it. Can't say the same about Worldwide Games. I'm not in the target audience for that sort of thing (having said that ... I did buy 42 on DS, and for a time used it to play Backgammon online).
@C-Olimar ah I see what you mean. Come to think of it a large amount of wii owners just had it for fitness games and just dance, where the switch is just pure gaming
@NEStalgia I think that just shows how good the game is and how mean you are.
@rjejr What is a Chuggaconroy, and how do I purge it from existence? And how do I purge anyone would would utter such nonsense words as though it's something real in the universe?
Great numbers!
The original DS title (42 all time classics) managed to sold 2,7 million copies.
Clubhouse Games 51 Worldwide Classics is now the 2nd Nintendo game (after Animal Crossing New Horizons) to reach a 50% digital attach rate.
Shame Nintendo only seem to report on games that sold 1 million+ in a quarter, would be nice to see how Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is doing. Think it was at 1.2 million back in the last update. Hopefully done well enough for another game
I'm pleased at how well Xenoblade Chronicles on the Switch has done, especially considering how niche JRPGs are. It's an amazing game and deserves a larger audience. It was a wise move to bring it to the Switch with a new coat of paint and a few welcome additions.
I didn't pick up Clubhouse Games, but it's nice to see that it has also done quite well.
@DrJoson On April 30 2021 Nintendo will release their end of the fiscal year report and in that they will include the sales numbers of all the games that sold a million copies between April 2020 & March 2021, maybe Mystery Dungeon will appear on that list.
@playstation_king Wikipedia mentions 890.000 units world wide for the Wii version. So roughly a million. Means the DE already surpassed it within this short time. Great success and hopefully it will keep this series going for a long time! I'm all up for XCX DE or XC3
@nmanifold
Why do you buy a game?
Clubhouse Games is awesome, no surprises that it sold so well. I'm sure it's sold quite a few consoles as well, or at least it would if they'd advertise it on TV.
@playstation_king yeah there's that point too - I think a way higher proportion of Switch owners are traditional gamers, more likely to be interested in Xenoblade.
Regardless, its nice to see it doing so well - now give us a port of X!
@rjejr That 20 hour epilogue can easily go for 30-40 hours dude, and that's only in 1 region! At the end you will probably want to return to the same world with the same characters in a new follow up game, I know I do
Gonna be honest and say Xenoblade had the most impressive sales figures from the recent report. Don't get me wrong. Animal Crossing selling 22M is monstrous. But considering lockdown situations, a fantasy life animal home game is gonna be bought by everyone so they can live another life through the game. It's not very surprising given the circumstances of the world. Not to mention AC was always going to sell well since New Leaf did so well.
But Xenoblade Chronicles on the other hand is a remaster of a 10 year old game with remade elements. It released so late into the Wii's life that nobody heard of it, which is why everyone was confused about who Shulk was when he entered Smash Bros for Wii U/3DS since the average person never played his game. Xenoblade Chronicles X on the Wii U didn't do so great either, and the 3DS port of Xenoblade 1 was considered awful.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 somehow miraculously sold a million but even then it was a game that was hard to recommend due to the combat system and story elements.
And yet Xenoblade 1 turned around and sold more than 2 did all these years later. This niche JRPG franchise has become a bigger name for Nintendo and I couldn't be happier. Monolith Soft deserves to continue their success. They make great games.
That's good to hear, it means xenoblade X is possible now.
@JR150 I love XC1 and couldn't agree more on the combat in 2. I didn't hate the story, but the combat was terrible. Your character stops auto-attacking when you move them to reposition for position-specific arts, effectively punishing the player for trying to get an advantage, and the whole combat schematic was basically a dumb rhythm game. The story wasn't terrible, but 1 was way better, and I truly hope 1 crushes 2 in sales so MonolithSoft sees that XC1 is the direction the series needs to go, not the way of 2.
And yes, please bring over XCX now. 😁
If everything is going to sell 1,000,000 copies can we get a Golden Sun HD?
I'm really feeling it! Now, with that out of the way, happy for both of them. I saw that Xenoblade just plummeted off the charts. Don't know what happened there, though I suspect it has to do with the fans getting it early, and no one else really wanting it. Also, Clubhouse Games looks like fun, I may have to pick it up.
@LatsaSpege
Well, I was really feeling that joke. Unlike you, I'm not sorry for the joke.
@NathanTheAsian
Definitely wore itself out for me. I archived it for the DLC of Smash Bros. and I haven't looked back since (Joker! Joker! JOKER!)
@NEStalgia I'm deeply disturbed, and must now cry myself into sleep, despite it being 2 PM where I am.
@DrJoson wait, how did I not know this existed? Is it better than Sword and Shield? Stupid question, almost anything is better than that (I must think whether Sonic 06 or Sword is worse)
@ecco6t9 or Persona 5 for the Switch! (No, I will never give up on that)
@rockodoodle Yeah that makes sense.
@Shiro28 Thanks. My wife just asked our son to play the main game while he's away at college and the epilogue when he gets back - 5 weeks starting Thanksgiving - so we can watch. I was going to play the epilogue myself, I thought it was stand alone like Torna and XC2, but I can't play thru XC again, no matter how much I like it, just way too long.
Awesome news, both of these titles surpassing 1M in such a short time is very impressive. Happy that the Xenoblade series is getting the sales it deserves.
@NEStalgia Chugga is good, he's happy. PBG is good too, he's sad. Psycho is good, he's smart. You can have the rest though.
@MeowMeowKins Not a lot of people have talked about it, went a bit under the radar I think. Tough to compare with Sword/Shield since they're so different , but I'm 40hrs into Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team DX and I think its great
@rjejr you sure do know your YouTubers...
I'll just stick with Alpharad and his various echo fighters (Desbug, Captain Kidd etc.)
@DrJoson oh, okay then. Thanks 😊
@rjejr But it is stand alone. You can play it even before the main game.
I absolutely love that the Xenoblade series is really picking up in popularity now!
I love all the XC games. This news makes me very happy and the sales trend of the last two releases makes me think this franchise will be around for awhile.
I hope Pikmin 3 deluxe can do the same or at least close to the same.
@MrBlacky I buy a game to play and enjoy once it's a genre I like. I don't buy a game just because its a Nintendo First-Party game. Last first party-game I bought was Animal Crossing (loved it). And I will buy Pikmin 3 Deluxe.
@nmanifold
I understand. But your first post sounded like this typical "People buy every Nintendo game, because there isn't anything else to buy!" -nonsense.
Really, every time a Nintendo game sells a decent amount of numbers, someone has to come out of their hole and has to spew this nonsense.
@TheFullAndy Yep. That usually happens with JRPG games that have more of a niche fanbase. Even popular games in that genre like Persona 5 or Fire Emblem have the same problem. All their sales are in the first month at most (usually more in the first couple of weeks).
Games like Mario Kart, Mario Party or Clubhouse games are more casual experiences that sell over time.
@Marnandez Did any Pikmin game surpassed the million unids sold? I think that should be the case but the series feels really niche. Sometimes it feels Nintendo only does more games in that series because if they don't Myamoto would be upset.
@DrJoson Mystery Dungeon got really undermentioned. Between being a niche style of game and releasing the same month as Animal Crossing... oof. At least it surpassed a million units.
@JR150 Clarification: Xenoblade 2 still has bigger sales than Xenoblade DX officially. According to Takahashi (Xenoblade producer), Xenoblade 2 sold 1.73 million copies as of march 2019.
@Debo626 Personally I love the combat in XC2 but it is way more complicated than what it should.
@nmanifold I hate this mentality nowadays to be honest. It seems like a game can't just sell by it's own merits or brand. It is just because "there isn't anything else".
Also, this year we had a constant release of first party Nintendo games. In January we got Brain Training and TMS#FE, in March we had Animal Crossing and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, in May we had Xenoblade Chronicles DX, in June we had Clubhouse Games and in July we had Paper Mario. Sure, not every game is a big one but expecting that is unrealistic. I think we had a better first half of the year than 2018 honestly.
What we lacked in this first half is announcements and Directs, not games. In games it isn't nearly as bad as people say it is.
@Shiro28 "But it is stand alone. You can play it even before the main game."
Wow really? Thank you very much. Guess I deserve that for listening to my 17 year old, kids, what do they know? 😂
@MeowMeowKins Those are pretty much the only ones I know. And Matt Pat. I cook all the dinners in our house and while I did so my youngest would sit on the PC in the kitchen watching Yotube videos so I can recognize those by their voices but I've never actually seen their videos. Wait, few more, JonTron, but only b/c of his Firework vid, which is really good, and Peanut Butter Gamer, who looks like Shaggy from Scooby Do and Zelda CDi is a running joke in our house.
And in case you are wondering what they all have in common, they don't really curse, or at least not enough that I made my son turn them off and stop watching. There were a few of those guys I had to put my foot down and be like "yeah, no".
Xenoblade Chronicles is my all time favorite game... Of coarse I bought it
@rjejr No problem dude. Monolitsoft announced that because they knew people who played the original game will love. They clearly think about their fanbase. Now get out there and play it. It is a fun 20+ hours. The only downsize for me is that the only original characters returning is Shulk and Millia (she is my favorite by far thought and somehow wish she was the main heroine)
@Shiro28 Can't play it, it's my sons, he leaves for college Thursday. Not sure when they'll be back. Next week? Thanksgiving? May? Crazy times.
But whenever he does get back I will likely play it. Or watch him play it if he hasn't already yet. I'm fine with watching, I've played my share.
@jowe_ge most games except Hey Pikmin have surpassed a million in the series, but that's in their lifespan, Xenoblade and Clubhouse surpassed 1 million in 1 month or 2
