UK chart data is now in for the week ending 8th August, revealing that Animal Crossing: New Horizons has managed to make its way back to number one.
The game is enjoying its 21st week in the charts this week and has managed to jump back ahead of PS4 exclusive, Ghost of Tsushima, which had previously been sitting at the top of the table for three weeks in a row. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has also risen once again into third.
It's a pretty strong week for Nintendo all round, with six of the top ten falling under the company's publishing label.
Here's a look at this week's top ten all formats chart:
Last Week | This Week | Title |
---|---|---|

"pretty strong week for Nintendo" Bit of an understatement that!
Who saw the UK becoming Nintendo Land 2 after Japan?!
Great stuff.
What's Grand Theft Auto 5's total at?
This almost looks more like a typical Japanese weekly sales chart than a British one. Congratulations, Nintendo!
At last the UK is over the Wii U lull. I was sad to see the closure of my local GAME but after seeing Nintendo's 500% revenue increase, it's clear video gaming is going to be just fine!
Tom Nook : It prints money, Yo!
Mwahahahaha! Screw you, Sony! Sandwiched in between Nintendo titles, as it should be.

@Varkster
It has been in high demand for months globally so I am surprised you are surprised.
@Snesionetty
135 million worldwide as of June 2020.
Well it has been a quiet 3 months from the big third parties but Glad to finally see Nintendo dominate the charts and tbh they have done the last 4 months, dont expect this to last when the next gen consoles release though unless Nintendo release some heavy hitters this holiday season and not remasters/ports
@playstation_king
When the new consoles launch they will dominate the charts for a few weeks but I can see Switch titles still sitting in the top 10 when the launch excitement ends.
Also what you have to remember is Wii U titles may be ports but that is only known by the minority of people who owned a Wii U but to the vast majority of Switch owners these are brand new titles and they wouldn't even be aware they are ports. Look at the sales behemoth Mario Kart 8 for example.
If 3D World does get ported, I can see that being the big Christmas title for Nintendo, and it will sell like mad.
@Varkster The only thing surprising about this is where so many people manage to find new copies to buy. It's been out of stock for a very long time to my knowledge.
Animal crossing is officially a world wide beast.
Good to see them doing well in the UK sales charts. It shows there's plenty of demand for good games. Good to see Ghost of Tsushima staying there too as it's a fantastic game. If anyone interested The Game Collection website has Borderlands collection for £24.95. Ordered mine this morning 😉
Wow just wow. I cannot believe my eyes. For years there has been only a small number of Nintendo titles in the top 40 and now this. It’s like the good old days! Well done Ninty for smashing through the thick skull of British Ignorance and once again becoming a force!
@TheFullAndy true you do haave a point about the wii u, switch has nearly 50 million more users than the wii u had. But they should still release some new games for those who have already played the wii u ports
@beazlen1 When I lived in the UK (1998 - 2008) Electronics Boutique/GAME employees would often try to talk me out of buying the Nintendo games I was looking at or which I took to the register, and into buying Playstation games instead. And not once had I asked for their advice or opinion. I witnessed them many times trying to dissuade parents from buying a gamecube for their kids and into getting a PS2.
@playstation_king
They have and will, I mean they just released the new Paper Mario. Also compared to PS4 and Xbox One after 3 and a half years into their lives, I am pretty sure Switch has more exclusive first party titles than either of them did. Probably already has more Switch exclusives than Xbox One has now!
I think we will see all the major Wii U games ported over and I think that is great. I would love a properly portable Mario 3D World or Wind Waker HD.
The sooner they port all the Wii U games the better then Ninty will move on to all new titles.
Paper Mario is still struggling.
Not so much because of sales. While sales maybe ok, you would expect Nintendo's big summer release to shine a bit more.
@georgesdandre it's also will be available in China so it'll sell even more from now
GTA5 is never leaving, is it?
Gotta ask, did ACNH sales grow above GoT or did GoT sales drop off? I would think at this point ACNH would have reached the same sales each week while GoT would be dropping off, especially as Cyberpunk nears release.
Either that or fireworks sold more copies. People do like their fireworks. 💥
@Xaessya nope and just wait til it comes to the switch, it will be in top 10 until GTA 6 comes out
@georgesdandre yes this sounds familiar. I remember having a similar conversation about GC Tiger Woods 2003 in GAME. Employee was laughing and saying “just get it on PlayStation man”. I played dumb and said “oh ok, can I get Metroid Prime on PlayStation too because I’ve heard it’s one of the best games ever?”. Can’t remember the reply but I walked out smug as a mother @&&@@£.
@rjejr I'd guess it's Switch hardware back in stock so more people buying Switch + ACNH + MK8 Deluxe.
@zool Its not been out of the top 10 in both UK and Japan since release and made its debut at 2 in the UK only behind GoT how is that struggling?
@The__Goomba
Zool has a major agenda against the game. I have tried to tell them the game is actually selling very well for a Paper Mario game in the UK in previous UK chart articles but it is like talking to a brick wall so I don't bother anymore.
@KoopaTheQuick
Bit rich when you call anyone who buys Fifa a chav.
@Grumblevolcano Good point about the stock, was able to buy a Switch yesterday at Target and several Targets had a bunch in stock.
Though it's still possible GoT dropped off a bit. Articles about numbers that don't actually tell you the numbers has always been a pet peeve of mine.
I'm still wondering if ACNH is selling because all these people love playing it or if it's selling because it's a social media phenomenon and socials have ever more sway over behavior than they did even when ACNL launched and that was a phenomenon as well. More than ever, people just seem to look over their shoulder and copy whatever "everyone else" is doing, whether they like it or not.
I'm sure it's partly bias....I still can't get myself to love the game. I keep trying and it keeps frustrating, boring, or totally infuriating me..... And it's not about "not getting AC" - it's because I am an AC fan from past games and this one is frustrating. It's always a big seller, but the numbers are just ridiculous for a game that hamfisted it's attempts at adding "real game" mechanics to a system not designed for them. Yes, I know a few of you seem obsessed with it too....and I'm jealous...I want to be...but just can't for some reason.
@KoopaTheQuick
"There will always be chavs who want to play trash games like The Lost Of Us, FIFA or Call of Duty"
Doesn't seem light hearted to me just a bit pathetic.
@TheFullAndy Ahh I see.
I bet they'd like it if they actually tried it too since it's actually very good.
@The__Goomba
Apparently Zool has played the game but doesn't think much of it and has been trying to spin the games sales success as a negative, and failing.
Haven't played the game personally but will pick it up eventually, it looks good fun!
@KoopaTheQuick
I love both consoles mate, only one missing out is yourself.
And in no way are they "lesser" games. Only a fool would think that.
That Fast & Furious game which was unveiled at last year's Game Awards launched last week and charted at #17, which is embarrassingly low.
It's a shame to see Bandai and Slightly Mad Studios squander the license given how big the Fast & Furious brand is - the last few movies are among the most successful films ever.
@The__Goomba quote..."According to Famitsu's latest sales chart, Nintendo's new release - Paper Mario: The Origami King - sold 109,092 copies in its first week in Japan.
How does this particular entry compare to previous Paper Mario launch weeks, though? According to Game Data Library, it puts it in fifth place overall in terms of opening week physical sales"
My point being it's not doing as well as previous Paper Mario Games. Having played them all I can see why.
@TheFullAndy hasn't played it. Maybe his view would carry more weight if he had 😁
@KoopaTheQuick I am British and I was making a “light hearted” jokey reference to the buying habits of British gamers.
Disclaimer: I have bought GTA and FIFA in the past(!). Someone set the dogs on me!
@zool
I never talked about the quality of the game with you only the sales performance.
And this is the UK sales chart, not the Japanese sales chart.
But I can't be arsed with this again so continue your little hate fest on the game, doesn't change the fact it had the best UK launch of any Paper Mario game.
@TheFullAndy come back when you have actually played it.
@zool
Why? Will that make it not have the biggest UK launch in the series?
@zool Digital sales are bigger than ever though so that isn't the full story, I wouldn't be surprised if this ends up being the best selling in the series when all is said and done.
Would deserve it too since the game is a huge return to form.
@The__Goomba the adventure part of the game is good, but the battle system does become tedious and repetitive, and is no more than a coin collecting mini game.
More adventure less battle would have been better.
@TheFullAndy I hope they port 3D Land. World was obnoxious, Land was really fun to play.
@beazlen1 As a Brit, I find your tone refreshing 😂
@TG16_IS_BAE
I love both games but prefer 3D World over Land. It offered more challenge towards the end, the bosses were much better, it looked great and the soundtrack was superb.
@TheFullAndy Honestly, they should port both.
@TG16_IS_BAE
Absolutely, that would be fantastic.
@zool not really true Paper Mario was never a top seller for Nintendo, it's actually their worst selling Mario franchise
@Blac-Link really! I can understand why; they keep altering each one so you never know what you're going to get. For me this is the least best.
Thank you fellow Brit!
Btw world is not obnoxious! It’s an absolutely brilliant family multiplayer 3D Mario. My two kids love it and have been able to play (with me of course) since they could first hold a controller. They play with the Peach and Mario controllers and I have my gold Zelda controller (obviously). Great family time together esp. when the wife joins in. It’s such a riot! And the challenge really ramps up towards the end for the dedicated Mario fan.
@zool So @TheFullAndy has no idea how well Paper Mario sold because he himself hasn't bought it. That's...not how it works.
Also, let's explore your argument a bit more. You think that the game is garbage, but you are also talking about it, which you've made clear that you believe that one is only entitled to do if he has bought the game. Therefore you are announcing to the world that you buy garbage. It doesn't really give you any credibility.
@JimmySpades
Good luck trying to get any sense out of him!
😂
@JimmySpades if you miss quote someone when what was actually said is there for you to read, it makes you sound like a bit of a plonker. Garbage is a word used your side of the pond.
Animal Crossing New Horizons and 51 Clubhouse Games are the first Nintendo games ever to obtain a 50% digital attach rate worldwide (55-60% if you exclude Japan) at launch, with no eShop discounts whatsoever. Just a year ago, the average digital attach rate for Nintendo games was at ~25%.
Expect all Nintendo games from now on to have a 40% digital attach rate at minimum.
@westman98 Incredible, wow.
