My PS4 Pro sits in a box in the closet because I didn't even crack 90 hours on it in 2019, despite having given Sony money for about 6-7 "AAA" titles. Meanwhile I'm playing the heck out of several indies, Pokemon Shield, and just about done with Star Ocean 1 on my Switch. I'd argue that gaming has changed, the "hardcore gamers" (including myself until recently) just haven't changed much with it. There's a reason Fortnite, Minecraft, etc. are massive moneymakers and companies like EA and Activision are relentlessly pursuing that business model. Hardware is kind of boring these days. MOAR PIXELS! 5 extra FPS! Yawn.
I'd trade nearly everything listed above for analog triggers - how can we ever expect proper GameCube emulation otherwise?
Docked 4K would be ok I suppose but a higher-powered GPU/CPU would take care of most of the minor visual complaints I have with the current Switch (while docked that is, most things look great while portable).
Aside from that? Wireless audio. My phone from 2009 has it, why doesn't the Switch?
Bought it on Wii U, already preordered for Switch. Love this game and fully intend to play it again whilst imagining everyone else playing it wearing skimpy underwear at a breathtaking 1080p/30fps. Near naked nerds are always hottest at 30fps.
Ugh. Control is such an overrated bore. As the game formerly known as Remedy's number one fan, I still cant believe I played that all the way through. So tedious.
Gimme Xenoblade Chronicles X and the entire Trails series on Switch, I'll be happy. Oh and Sega Ages: Daytona USA.
I can only pick one? Screw that. I pretty much want everything on the list except the 3rd party stuff I can get elsewhere. Nintendo is 100% leaving money on the table by not re-releasing all of their stuff - hell, Starfox might actually be good if it doesn't require awful Wii U gamepad controls.
I have these on DS/3DS/Wii etc and never got the appeal. Definitely not for a lack of trying; they just feel too much like school for me and I'm WAY too old for school.
I have PS4 Pro, XB1X, Switch and Switch Lite from this gen. Add on a gaming PC and a pretty sizeable retro console collection and I'm pretty sure I should just be omitted from the survey for skewing the results. Still, Switch is my mainstay because it's portable. Nothing else really comes close at the moment.
Mine are (in order): Digimon, Pokemon Shield, Splatoon 2 way out in front. All the rest are an hour here, 3 hours there, etc. Probably doesn't help that I have a Switch backlog that's as tall as I am, and an Xbox One and PS4 backlog twice as tall as that. At this rate I might as well just get a new hobby.
My 7-year old daughter and I broke out our respective 3DS units the other day for the first time in months. She immediately remarked at how awesome it was that the 3DS home menu and eshop both had a ton of personality (her exact words were "this is so cute") and how the Switch was "boring; yuck."
Add the fact that it becomes ridiculously challenging to find games in a 512GB micro sd and the Switch UI takes barebones to the extreme. Absolutely awful.
Most of this generation has been easy to ignore. Between Sony's beautiful but bland third person action adventure of the week and Xbox's inability to get past Forza, Halo, and Gears, its left Nintendo as the only real platform with an eye on fun. Witcher 3 one of few exceptions, the stuff I've taken to the most from third parties has been from indies. Pixel counting is a bore and processing power is overrated.
Bought this and Battle Princess Whatshername last time I was in Tokyo, just for the novelty of buying physical copies of non-Japanese games in Japan. Neither one was worth the $20.
Most of the hate for this game came from the gaming press, and let's face it, they've got too much love for Kojima to ever give Konami a pass again. It's not terrible. In fact, I've had a lot of fun playing through it a few times now. Was it worth $40? Nope. At $20 it's a good game though.
I can't think of a more irrelevant waste of a good click than this particular article. And yet I clicked it anyway, knowing this going in. I am the problem.
Weird. I thought Cube Creator X had already been released in the west ages ago. Bought that one 2+ years ago during a trip to Tokyo. Played it a few times but the performance issues were so bad that I eventually gave up.
Oh, and obviously I'm buying Pokémon Sword and Shield. Twice (big family).
It amuses me that so many people feign disappointment before they even try something these days. The press click baits fans of almost everything into an outrage frenzy and we all jump aboard like mindless little lemmings. You'll buy Sword and Shield anyway, wait until you've played it.
I'd buy this just because I'm a sucker for goofy little retro micro consoles and lead an empty life that causes me to spend far too much of my disposable income. Too bad we don't have it in the US.
Funny that Microsoft has 3 titles on this list. I guess if you can't beat 'em, join em - and I say this as a 100% Xbox fanboy loving the hell out of Ori and Cuphead on my Switch.
I have both games on PS4 and barely paid them any attention at all. Now that I have them on Switch, this has quickly become one of my top 5 Switch titles ever for some reason. Addicting in ways that Switch-based Pokemon hasn't been - at least to date. Worth every double-dipping penny to me.
Eh. Its Overwatch. I have it on a tricked out PC and I have it on Xbox One X. Now for the first time ever, I can play it outside, on the train, and in bed. I'm over the Digital Foundry "omg! there's 16 fewer pixels and ambient occlusion!" nonsense. And I say that as a DF Patreon subscriber.
Meanwhile there are a ton of us leveling up in Switch Overwatch right now. Join us. Or dont. But dont let (gasp!) a handful of texture maps stop you. Big deal.
Day one buy for me. Huge fan of Avicii and huge fan of rhythm games in general. Given the donation side of it, I may double-dip on XB1 and Switch both.
Didn't have a PC back when these were a thing and I see them listed on so many "Top 100 Games of All Time" type lists that I've preordered this one, Icewind Dale & Planescape: Torment, and Neverwinter Nights. I may never leave the comfort of my recliner again. Now if only the Switch had a Domino's Pizza app...
Triple-dipping on this one because: 1. to play it again, 2. to support Switch ports, especially those done right via physical release, 3. see 2 again - worth mentioning twice because download codes in a box are crap.
That all of this controversy around translated copy and a voice actor have amounted to about 1/3rd the total press this game has received is sickening. Goes to show that regardless of our opinions on any given matter, far too many of us will waste our time and energy "weighing in" on something we have nothing to do with either way.
Is it a good game? yes. Is it fun? yes. Was your day absolutely ruined because you saw a voice actor did something controversial and was removed from the game or because a line of text was altered for one reason or another? If so, get a life.
It's a testament to the absolutely groundbreaking quality of the original F-Zero that I not only played it to death at launch on SNES, it's the first game from the SNES -> Switch games I fired up - and to date, only 1 of 3 that I've played at all. A lot has been said about F-Zero GX and even F-Zero 64. Sure, they're both utterly fantastic and I'd even give the overall nod to GX, but the original SNES classic is easily a 9/10, possibly a 10/10. When we're rating the quality of games relative to one another, we don't have to reserve a perfect rating of "10" only for a single game in a given series - it's possible, however unlikely, that more than one games deserves a perfect rating. For me, F-Zero is one of the few. It feels as amazing to play today as it did all those years ago, and in looking back, it was the title that clearly defined (for me at least) what the SNES did that the Genesis/MegaDrive did not - and I say this as a huge Sega fanboy back in the day.
If we can also have some Uniracers on Switch, I'll be happy for some months to come.
I bought SMM2 in the hopes that it would remedy the "issue" of too many novelty levels that makers made for SMM1. Silly me. I'm a middle-aged dad who doesn't have the time to MAKE anything, but I choose to believe that the gaming community is full of creative people - and it is, except they're creating some amazing, yet ultimately unsatisfying, auto levels or impossible levels - seems like in almost equal measure. My disappointment with the game doesn't come from the game or its tools, it comes from the fact that almost no one is trying to be the next Miyamoto-caliber level designer.
I'm a huge Doraemon fan and almost picked up a physical copy of this while I was in Tokyo a couple of months ago, figuring I wouldn't be able to understand it but hey, Doraemon!! Glad I waited.
I've got PoE on Xbox One, PC, and now Switch - it's the very definition of a 9 in my opinion. It's a pretty sizable download but if you like RPGs and have the space, get it! Switch is where this game belongs - I barely looked at it on PC and Xbox; I'm halfway through it on Switch already. Truly a masterpiece among Western RPGs.
With the exception of Madden 20, I'd rather play any other game on that list than Crash Team Racing. Bought it to see what the hype was all about, played about 50% through it, realized I hadn't enjoyed even a moment of it. Haven't played it again since.
This is a great list in my opinion - lots of great memories here, both old and fairly recent. I still adore my DS and play it fairly often, even with every other, newer game system in the house. Also, I think it's worth mentioning that my local GameStop stores still have a LOT of used DS games at pretty premium prices. The stock seems to rotate quite a bit too – far more than their PS3, Xbox 360, etc. titles do. It speaks volumes that a system as old as the DS has so many in-demand titles on it and they're still selling (again and again and again). Truly an amazing system.
I agree with @YANDMAN above. I love my SN30 Pro - it's my controller of choice behind the stock Xbox One controller - but I'm not a fan of the dualshock-like design at all. Something about the dualshock 'feel' gives me wicked hand cramps. I'd rather have no palm support than the small-ish support dualshocks have. That said, I could use another SN30 Pro for couch co-op so they'll get more of my money anyway.
@SepticLemon the DRM is stupid, no doubt. And frankly, those old ports came out a long time ago now; how hard can it be to make this 99.9% perfect in 2019?
...and if you think THIS is a poor port of Doom, I cordially invite you to play the 3DO or SNES ports I played last month. Compared to those, this is an 11 on a 10 scale. I kid of course, sort of.
Switch Online needs some sort of tier-based service that caters to both the people that only want to use it to play friends online (and give them audio chat finally) and a tier for those of us that want something comparable to what Sony and Microsoft already offer. Yes, its silly to think that your $15 a year is going to buy you Game Pass, but Nintendo is either naïve or stupid to be leaving so much money on the table with their Switch-less SNES/GCN/etc catalog. I'd happily pay $15/month for a "Nintendo All Access" pass; they don't even have to give me newer games - just everything pre-2012 or so.
It's amazing how half the comments here are about Fallout 76 when Obsidian had nothing whatsoever to do with that game. Goes to show how one really, really bad apple can ruin the whole bunch.
Played through this one with Xbox Game Pass. Shame, I probably would have preferred it on Switch as it has a portable-friendly feel to it. That said, there wasn't anything particularly outstanding about the graphics in the first place so I'm curious why the downgrade happened.
Got all 3 and already played through the original. So many great memories...all over again. Just when I think I loathe Bethesda almost as much as EA, they go and do something like this.
