Yep, you read that right! Obsidian Entertainment is bringing The Outer Worlds to Switch in partnership with Virtuos. Senior Producer Matthew Singh appears in the above video detailing the announcement and discussing the story and setting of the game.
While we shouldn't really be surprised to see big ports coming to the Switch, this one still managed to catch us off guard. A huge sci-fi RPG, the creators of the Fallout series Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky are directors on this first-person space-faring epic, so there's a lot of pedigree to the project.
Nintendo posted the announcement on its Twitter account:
Virtuos are the port house behind previous Switch games including L.A. Noire, Final Fantasy XII, Dark Souls: Remastered and Starlink: Battle for Atlas, so we've got high hopes that they'll be able to squeeze The Outer Worlds onto Switch in fine form.
The game is scheduled to land on other consoles on 25th October 2019 - we'll update when we can confirm if the Switch version will be arriving at the same time. Here's the E3 trailer to bring you up to speed:
Are you excited to see this coming to Switch? How do you think the diminutive handheld hybrid will handle the game? Let us know with a comment below.

Hey, isn't this made by the guys who made Fallout 76?
Holy sh*t! Didn't see that one comming!
Virtuos and Panic Button are Switch Senpai.
@patbacknitro18 No, the guys that made Fallout New Vegas.
Yaaaaaay! This is great news! More big third party support! And Obsidian is one of the best. What a year!
Next one: Fallout New Vegas
Virtuos really did the least amount of effort porting Dark Souls to Switch but their other ports seem okay...
@patbacknitro18 No, its the guys that made New Vegas.
@FoxMcCloud Really? I hear people say that Obsidian is known for making the best Fallout game. So obviously I would assume they meant 76.
I'm so happy right now! Never thought this of all games would see the light of day on the Switch!
While I'm sure this will be an average game, when is Fallout 76 coming to the Switch? I have $200 sitting right here waiting for that sweet, sweet Power Armor edition.
@patbacknitro18 I don't believe so. Obsidian are behind Fallout: New Vegas. I think Bethesda is behind 76.
Wasn't Obsidian also behind the Elder Scrolls Oblivion game? I'm mildly optimistic
Oh that's amazing! I've been eyeing up this game for some time but a version on my preferred system makes it even better as long as it isn't completely compromised. The environments in the trailer look awesome.
Awesome! I hope they do a good job porting it. Was thinking about getting it for Xbox, but I could be persuaded to...... switch.
Good job, Microsoft making Switch friends once more.
I love seeing all of these games coming to Switch! I really need a second job for all of these games coming out over the next several months.
He says "following the launch on other platforms [...]". Sounds like it'll be a bit later.
Still, I am super excited! This is one of the rare games that I could have bought of my dust machine, i.e., PS4.
A fairly major studio who actually wants to make money--what a refreshing dose of common sense!
This is a really nice announcement!
I'm pretty sure this will release a good few months after the other console launches - but I'm cool with that as Witcher 3 is landing in that same window.
Looks like the nearest thing to Half-Life we are going to get, will definately keep an eye on this
I was going to get this on xboxone but now I will get it on Switch.
Wow, I’ll be picking this up day 1 on switch
Didn’t care about this, but now I’ll buy it just to support the Switch. This is great.
@Bosstoneman In all seriousness no, the development behind Fallout 76 is actually really interesting. Yes, the game was entirely Bethesdas fault, but they didn't make it. Instead of having their much bigger teams work on the game, they pushed its development to a FAR smaller and FAR more inexperienced B team in Austin, Texas. This was already bad enough as not only were they trying to make the game bigger than Fallout 4, but they were trying to make it far better to in every aspect. That was already bad enough, but to make matters worse they were also forced to patch in online multiplayer to the Fallout 4 framework. Bethesda made some horribly poor choices with the development of the game, and that is only 5% of the issues with Fallout 76's development.
Was going to get the PS4 version but since it's coming to Switch, even if a bit later, I'll wait to see how that turns out. As long as it runs well and is perfectly playable in both tv mode and handheld mode, I can deal with the downgrade to be able to play anywhere. I prefer the Switch, if it's an option, for games that are 50+ hours long.
If you don't know who is Obsidian do your research. They are one of the best RPG game developers. Even before they were Black Isle Studios and they made great RPG's
Wow. First the Hero DLC releasing today, a Captain Toad VR mode, and now this? So many awesome announcements today.
@patbacknitro18
I really hope this is a joke! Who in there right mind would want that poo on the switch. Enjoyed all of Obsidian games and unlike bethesda they actually make a effort and aren't lead by the mentally challenged Todd Howard
Wow, great announcement!
If this game has gyro aiming, I'm in.
@pacostrano
Agree 100% great company even there so called failures are fun( alpha protocal)
Well I'm very set
@patbacknitro18 Ugh that does sound horrible! I haven't played it I just know there were all kinds of issues with it. Thanks for the info!!
Don't get your hopes up too much - graphics in the video are very misleading. Expect Doom quality downgrade - 720p at best.
@Leuke Given that's it's included as part of Game Pass I feel like I have to play it on XBox. Don't get me wrong I'm all for portable, but full price on switch, vs already paid for on XBox and going Switch starts to feel irresponsible on my part
This looks a lot like Fallout.
@suikoden I agree and I love the RPG that they made Pillars of Eternity.
Wow. That's surprising.
But as usual, I'd get it on PS4 over Switch.
Great news! Obsidian games are usually interesting and well worth playing.
@Farmboy74 No, AFAIK they didn't have anything to do with that game.
They made Knights of the Old Republic 2, Alpha Protocol and Fallout New Vegas, among others. On Switch you can already play one of their RPGs, South Park The Stick of Truth, and I think that they're also releasing Pillars of Eternity later this month.
As long as I don't need to sign into Epic to play
Decent in handheld and you can take my money!!
"we'll update when we can confirm if the Switch version will be arriving at the same time" he literally says following the release on other platforms.
This is great news and very surprising, I do wish we would get to see Switch footage of these games though. There is definitely less and less excuses now for third parties with this and The Witcher 3 now coming
No way, was going to pick this up on PS4, but this will be perfect on the go. Switch version it is.
A welcome addition to Switch library, and the trailer looks quite promising. Might be a good taste of "sci-fi Skyrim" for me to try (seeing as Fallout 3 still won't provide any... enable NET framework for one game, disable it for and reinstall another game, register on a mod site and get a patch because none of the storefronts did - "master race" my posterior😑), and there's no catch-up backlog preceding it as an original IP either.
Wow really?! This is great news. I had written this off immediately as having no chance of coming to Switch. Happy to be proven wrong!
This one will be day one for me! So stoked!
Great to see more WRPGs coming to Switch. Been comparatively thin on the ground so far, so this is great news. It might be the only sci-fi first-person one so far too, which should help stand out among the likes of The Witcher 3 and Skyrim.
I'll wait for the Switch version. Amazing surprise!
This is amazing...absolutely incredible. First Witcher 3, then Doom Eternal and now Outer Worlds...please keep'em coming!
I was interested in this as soon as I saw it but wrote it off as a purchase because it wasn’t coming to Switch. I’m very pleased that’s changed. Can’t wait to play it!
I'll be getting this for the ps4 but glad it's coming to Switch. Amazing how much 3rd party support this great console is getting.
That’s awesome. This looks like it will be one of the better games this year.
Day 1! I'll get it on PC eventually but seriously, day 1.
@patbacknitro18 Don't troll.
Yes, please!
Got so many great RPG:s on Switch already, but none space rpg:s.
Have hoped for Mass Effect Trilogy for Switch for some time now...
Wowee Zowee!!!
Further good third party support on the Switch, the sign of a sucessful console....
Surprised they decided to announce it before the game launch on other platforms as it may well cannibalise on day one sales
Wow! What a pleasant surprise!
Awesome news! Hope it turns out fine.
This game looks great. A mix of Borderlands and Bioshock.
I was going to buy it for PS4 but I’ll wait to see how it turns out on Switch
Another ambitious multiplatform release for the Switch.
No way! This is incredible! This, Cyberpunk, and tales were among the only games I was going to preorder this year on X1X....and now it's on Switch! You just can't top that!
@patbacknitro18 No, Skyrim is made by the guys who made Fallout 76. This is made by the guys who made the ORIGINAL Fallout games, Fallout 1 & 2, Fallout New Vegas expansion for 3, part of Planescape Torment, part of Baldur's Gate II as well as a host of other beloved RPGs.
Outer Worlds is pretty much the original creators giving the folks who made Fallout 76 a gigantic, public, middle finger (Bethesda bought the Fallout brand in a fire sale when Interplay/Black Isle was being bled to death after a hostile takeover from Brian Fargo (inExile - he's the actual creator of Fallout, and former founder of Interplay) by the investors.
inExile (Brian Fargo's company, now bought by MS) and Obsidian (Feargus Uquhart's company also no bought by MS) both together were the original designers of Fallout at Black Isle. The two companies consist largely of former Black Isle staff.
Betesda's Fallout 3, 4, & 76 get the entire point of the game's world entirely wrong and spit all over it. Outer Worlds is the original creator's comeback, without access to the Fallout brand, to redo Fallout properly with the original tongue-in-cheek satire in place.
. As a fan of the original series who can't stand Bethesda's mutilation of the once great Fallout brand, Outer Worlds has been on my wish list for X1 since it was announced.....now it's moved to my Switchlist!
(EDIT: Of course after I started writing this I see you were massively trolling and know the score. Nice show! )
Very nice. One of the few big games I had preordered for other consoles.
Will be canceling that order and sliding it over to Switch.
Virtuos suck lol. Most of their ports have severe audio compression issues and massive framerate issues. Let's remember assassin's Creed III was utter garbage on switch and that the audio was almost broken. So yeah, i lost hope the minute they said virtuos.
It's a pleasant surprise, but I'll stick to getting it on PS4 (not gonna get it from the shady Epic Games Store and I'll wait for videos to see if the Switch version runs well)
whoa whoa whoa!
Easily the best third party announcement since Doom Eternal.
I love Obsidian but their games are very buggy. Like Bethesda, it's a bad idea to get their games on console where you don't have mods or fan patches to fix stuff. I'm sure the game itself will be amazing but I'm equally sure it'll be riddled with bugs, even some potentially gamebreaking ones. Also it's going to run at like 720p and 30fps docked and lack loads of graphical detail compared to other versions; I want my atmospheric space saga to be as immersive and fantastic looking as possible.
eh its still not Fallout so pass
@patbacknitro18 No
@KBuckley27 Really? A pass because of that?? Guess you won't buy a new Mario game because it isn't Fallout either.
I'm getting this day 1 on Xbox Game Pass already but great that they're porting it to Switch!
@patbacknitro18 No. That's Bethesda Game Studios. Obsidian made Fallout New Vegas and the original Fallout titles pre Fallout 3 when they were still a part of InterPlay Entertainment.
I’m seriously excited for this but optimistic. Still having Ark flashbacks.
Sweeeet! I can't wait!
Would prefer Outer Wilds. Oh well.
It's amazing how half the comments here are about Fallout 76 when Obsidian had nothing whatsoever to do with that game. Goes to show how one really, really bad apple can ruin the whole bunch.
To be honest, I don’t really expect this game to perform very well on PS4, let alone Switch.
Free on Xbox game pass, so I’ll play it there instead of 5-6 months later on Switch.
@KBuckley27 I mean, it's a game made by the folks who used to make Fallout back when it was good, and it's a game intentionally being sold as a Fallout-like game from the real makers of Fallout.
Meanwhile Fallout 76 is Fallout..... I know which one I regret putting money down for, and it isn't this one.
But if you're really stuck on Fallout being Fallout, hold out for Wasteland 3 in development by inExile. inExile is Brian Fargo's company after he was exiled from his own Interplay. He created both Wasteland and Fallout. Specifically, Fallout (1) was actually Wasteland 2. He still owned the rights to Wasteland but not to Fallout after Interplay collapsed and Fallout was sold to Zenimax. So he then made Wasteland 2 (available on Switch but it's a buggy port of a PC game.) Thus the up-coming Wasteland 3 is the REAL sequel to Fallout 2 by the REAL Fallout creator, if you ignore the blasphemy of Bethesda's take on the series.
However Obsidian is the other half of his old team, and Outer Worlds is their take on the "Real" Fallout 3. Albeit in a new setting since they can't use either Wasteland or Fallout's world.
These the guys that did L. A. Noire?
I trust them. That was a port I was surprised to see looking so holding up in handheld mode.
Wow Outer Worlds on Switch? That's Out of this World! It's Outlandish!
Amazing how successful patbacknitro18 is right now. sigh
Yesssssssss.
Gotta feed that Postapocalyptic Space Sci-Fi itch.
Witcher 3 is going to be watered down and probably have a few frame rate issues but I'm going to gamble on it. This? Well it'll be like trying to power my TV on a cart of potatoes... May just about run but will definitely be terrible down the line when they're not wowing you in the first half hour. So many cut backs, unless they make a new build with different graphics. Don't see that happening!
Yes! Just shoot this game into my veins!
If this can get at least a 7 in the Switch review I'll have no choice but to rush to the store and buy it. Not going to preorder, not that crazy. Ambitious games like this are a real coin flip on Switch. Otherwise I'll wait for a decent sale and go PS4.
@MBII well i'm the kind of guy who thinks that Loot boxes....I mean "Surprise Mechanics" improve the quality of a game. And that the reason why Smash Ultimate is such a terrible game is that the characters aren't locked behind "Surprise Mechanics" that require real money to try drawing them. So you tell me if I am or not -_-
I am really happy to hear about this. I'll have to watch the trailer when I'm at home instead of procrastinating at work.
This IS a surprise! What ISN'T a surprise is that I'll be buying yet another Switch port I never expected to see, but fine... whatever... take my money (what's left of it). I'll just go live in a gutter, naked, with my Switch and a whole bunch of awesome games... yeah, that's the life for me! 🌈
@patbacknitro18 Obsidian made fallout New Vegas, this was a while back PS3 Xbox 360 game
@patbacknitro18 Can't tell if you are trolling but no that would be Bethesda.
Very cool. I might be into this.
This news gave me a tingling feeling in my arachnads.
