Accessory maker 8BitDo isn't a company that's content to sit back and relax. It has been iterating and improving on its range of wireless controllers for many years now, releasing new variants (as well as welcome firmware updates) to ensure they meet the needs of the widest range of players.
The 8BitDo SN30 Pro+ is the latest and perhaps greatest example of this constant desire to improve; it's based on the existing SN30 Pro but comes with some very welcome extras; 8BitDo is proudly proclaiming it to be the best controller it has ever created, and we're inclined to agree.
As you can see, it's heavily inspired by the iconic SNES controller. The design is an evolution of the 8BitDo SN30 from a while back, which would later mutate into the SN30 Pro, which offered twin analogue sticks. The Pro+ takes things to the next level by adding in two prongs for improved comfort, making the pad feel even closer to the official Switch Pro Controller – and that's no bad thing, we're sure you'll agree.
The SN30 Pro+ also offers spongy L2 and R2 triggers which mimic the "analogue, but not" feel of the triggers on the aforementioned Pro Controller. The other big change is that there's a removable battery, which should ensure the pad has a longer shelf life than its rivals.
The four face buttons are nice and responsive, and there are Home and Screenshot buttons on the front, too
The rest of the design will be familiar to existing 8BitDo fans; the D-Pad is based on the famous 'cross' directional controller seen on the Game & Watch, NES, Game Boy and SNES, and is comfortable enough to use – although it's not as spongy as the one on the Pro Controller as there's a lot less travel when you push on it (and, if we're being honest, the rolling D-Pad on the 8BitDo M30 is better). The four face buttons are nice and responsive, and there are Home and Screenshot buttons on the front, too. The analogue sticks are fantastic as well, but they're positioned in-line with on another, rather than having the left stick higher up on the pad, as is the case on the Pro Controller. You might actually prefer this if you're used to using PlayStation controllers.
As well as being compatible with the Switch, the SN30 Pro+ also works on PC, Mac and Android – there's even a smartphone holder which clips onto the pad and allows you to use it with your phone, like some kind of unwieldy handheld games console. You can also use the pad in wired mode if you're concerned about latency, but to be honest, we didn't detect any delay when using the controller with the Switch over a wireless connection.
Another exciting element about the SN30 Pro+ is the fact that 8BitDo has developed a piece of software which allows you to re-map buttons and customise the way the pad works. The 8BitDo Ultimate Software is available for PC (there's no Mac version at present, but we assume it's on the way) and offers a full suite of options. Don't like the way the buttons are mapped currently? You can switch them around easily. Annoyed by the intensity of the vibration coming from the pad's internal motors? Tone it down a little. Want to assign multiple buttons presses or commands to a single button? You can do that, too – you'll be a master at Street Fighter in seconds.
The only thing the SN30 Pro+ is lacking is NFC support, so if you're keen on using amiibo for in-game rewards, you'll need to either resort to using your Joy-Con or your existing Pro Controller. It's a shame this feature isn't present, as it would mean 8BitDo's pad is a genuine like-for-like rival to Nintendo's.
As it stands, this is still a superb controller that feels well-built, controls brilliantly and costs $50. The ability to customise how the pad works via software is actually a lot more useful than you might expect, and there's the added benefit that the SN30 Pro+ works with devices other than your Switch. We're not sure where 8BitDo can take its SN30 line beyond this design, but that matters little; what we have here is perhaps the best third-party wireless controller for Switch.

Thanks for the review, my black one will be here tomorrow, can't wait to put it through its paces!
I'm curious if PS4 players would prefer this form factor to the official PS4 controller considering the buttons are essentially in the same locations on the 2.
I don't really like the new designs personally as they stray from the original looks, so I'm good with the sn30 pro.
@duffmmann That’s exactly what’s stopping me from convincing myself to drop £43 on giving it a try. I personally really do not like the two control sticks being on the bottom half like that.
I just went to their website, did anyone else know they now have wired controllers as well
I hate the PS4 style.
I could never get used to the layout of the PlayStation controller (which this obviously mimics), but outside of that, I noticed that this review doesn't mention anything about rumble? At least not that I read. Does it have it or not?
I just wish that they kept the SF aesthetic that they did for the SF30 and SF30 Pro. I get that they have the North American Super Nintendo aesthetic, but I really liked the classic red/blue/green/yellow face buttons!
That aside, still very interested in this, I may pick up a black one since it looks like an original controller, instead of invoking a retro aesthetic.
I bought an SN30 Pro awhile back, and it sits unused because the Dpad is just so awful. 8bitdo offered to fix it under warranty if I send it back to China, which costs nearly what I paid for the controller. Can’t see myself buying from them again without an extended warranty from somewhere local.
@AnnoyingFrenzy It has non-HD rumble, which is customisable via the software. (They do mention that in the review).
So glad the sticks are symmetrical! Too bad they weren’t on top like the WiiU pro-but I can handle this. Can’t wait to try it out!
I’ll stick to my Pro controller, good alternative if your looking for something a bit cheaper.
Non-HD rumble and no gyroscope control?
@chardir Ah, thanks. I see how I missed it in my initial reading.
This is probably the best controller for emulators
Sn30 pro is my second favourite controller ever, its not a 360 controller, but its damn good. OK, maybe 3rd, I can't help but love a pal SNES controller for aesthetics alone. But, the sn30 pro is also the best made Switch controller out there, absolutely zero problems with drift.
I probably won't get a plus because the extra grip space isn't something I necessarily want, the sn30 pro is a reasonable size, and muscle memory makes it work for me, but I get why others might want it.
I love this site but I don’t trust their 8bit controller reviews at all! They always rave about them and he ones I’ve got have been so poor it makes me think I’d these guys get something for their positive reviews.
@MasterJay 8BitDo had to change the original designs after Nintendo decided to release the NES JoyCons, and the datamine leak for the SNES and SFC designs. Most likely, Nintendo asked 8BitDo to change the designs. Also, they came out with the Wired SN30 Pro a few months ago, but all of their controllers work with the USB cord as a wired controller too.
@GrantM3 Only Nintendo themselves produce controllers with HD Rumble, but this controller does have Motion/Gyro controls.
@Kobeskillz The majority of people who get controllers from 8BitDo like them. My best friend and I were buying them before Switch Compatibility was announced. 8BitDo's quality has gone up a lot over the last few years. Sorry to hear you haven't had the best of luck with them. The only problem my best friend and I have had is one of the controllers stopped working, his SNES30 Pro, but that entire first run of controllers had USB-C issues. 8BitDo figured it out, released more without problems, for both the SNES30 Pro, and all future releases so far.
Does it wake up the switch. The current sx30 do not do that, unfortunately.
I agree with @YANDMAN above. I love my SN30 Pro - it's my controller of choice behind the stock Xbox One controller - but I'm not a fan of the dualshock-like design at all. Something about the dualshock 'feel' gives me wicked hand cramps. I'd rather have no palm support than the small-ish support dualshocks have. That said, I could use another SN30 Pro for couch co-op so they'll get more of my money anyway.
Love to see some controller makers recognize the superiority of symmetrical analog sticks. This looks like a great controller that I will be adding to my collection.
@gangsterswedish I have a PS4, but i immediately picked up a HORI xbxo style pad for it. The internal analogue style will never feel natural or comfortable to me.
@Knuckles yeah they are popular but the ones that I gotten have been really poor.
The nes stick being the worse. That thing was pure garbage and this site praised it. Made me wonder if they had their fans best interest. Maybe they get good units to review who knows.
So can I turn on my switch with it? I love my SF30 pro, but I hate the janky way you have to sync it to the system every time (hold start + Y until it blinks, then hit select) and I have to use my pro controller to turn on the switch.
@Knuckles I don't think that's the story behind the desing change. For this kind of things, Nintendo usually don't "ask" kindly. They either threaten you or sue you directly...
I just don't love this controller as much as I liked the normal Pro, maybe its because it doesn't have the EU SNES colouring or that with the horns the symmetrical sticks cause me problems.
I still rate it very highly, just not as high as the OG pro or the Switch Pro
it looks nice though. But Ps3/Ps4 controller doesn't work for me. Strange to have my both thumb so close to each other. For long gaming it's actually annoying. On that part MS did a better job to put the D-pad below and the analog above. Works way better
Nice PlayStation-style controller, but I think I prefer the Xbox style.

Raziel-chan
@Kobeskillz
That sucks, but you have bad luck. I own a bunch for the switch, mini NES & SNES, and all work great. Been using them for years.
@tech7 I want to know this too, the only thing I don't like about my SF30 Pro is that it can't turn my Switch on...
Something tells me Nintendo's lawyers had a chat with 8bitdo and that's why they suddenly stopped making replica controllers. It's a shame, because the new designs are not as good looking.
I will stick with my SN30 Pro, which is an amazing controller.
When are they going to make one like the Wii U GamePad?
Goofy as it is, the thought crossed my mind when the symmetrical analog sticks were compared to Playstation rather than Nintendo's own controller... but really it is more like the PS controllers than the GamePad which had them on top... and I guess the Wii U GamePad isn't the most popular controller!
@Kobeskillz Same. There is a crazy amount of shilling that goes into 8bitdo controller reviews and you always see this site promoting them and trying to sell their products. I had two terrible experiences with them in a row and I would never buy another product from them again, and evidently I am far from being alone when it comes to thinking their quality is very questionable at best.
With 8bitdo, I've had 7 great experiences in a row. I have a pair of these arriving Friday. Gonna be awesome.
@JayJ My fellow Turbo Zone Direct comrade in arms. I love you, but for the millionth time, your problem was with one product (the budget arcade stick) and the problem was that you did not feel that it was your responsibility to have to update the firmware (fair enough).
You would experience the same problem with all of their legacy game pads (the ones that too closely resemble Nintendo’s). Thankfully, 8bitdo do a good job with firmware support and the update process is ridiculously easy (their firmware update software even runs on Mac OS...not the case with their competitors). That said, you will never have to worry about these details if you buy an officially licensed product.
I agree with you on your observation that 8bitdo spams press/youtubers with free controllers and, consequently, there’s a lot of positive commentary to be skeptical of.
But I would also argue that you manage to misrepresent your personal experience by a significant margin by leaving out what exactly it was that you took issue with.
@tech7 @ZombieGavinS Nope. I checked it out on Amazon and their representative officially said that it does not wake up the console.
I have one preordered but unfortunately it seems like I will be waiting until they are back in stock. I think I might have preordered too late.
I want a lime green one!
Can it do gyro aiming?
The real question is: when are they going to create a Pro version of their M30 controller? The six-button Mega Drive / Saturn control pad is basically the perfect (single piece) video game controller, all it needs is joysticks!
This thing can't be the best 3rd party Switch controller until it switches the positions of the left analog stick and D-Pad back to where they belong.
Battery life? How many hours will it last if fully charged?
Looks bloody awful
@chardir Actually, they never say that it's "non-HD". The only words I see about it is "The only thing the SN30 Pro+ is lacking is NFC support". Which should mean both gyro and HD rumble, but I suspect they just were too quick with publishing the review.
Looks bloody beautiful
@Kobeskillz
IMO the hardware itself is of very high quality (the buttons and the D-pad all have a nice "clicky" feel to them - I have the SFC30).
The problem is more the firmware that doesn't seem to be working correctly. I personally gave up on it a year ago, because I couldn't get it working properly with the Spectaculator ZX Spectrum emulator (sometimes it worked, then suddenly it didn't again and so on).
I can't understand why they didn't keep the SNES look, that would've really sold it to me. Am still likely to buy one though because the SN30 Pro is a great controller.
@Roam85
Yes, it does have gyro and despite their original ad material claiming it wasn’t compatible with Switch mode, it actually is, as I’ve watched a YT review that recorded footage using the gyro.
But it can’t wake the console up, that’s its only real weakness.
I like it. But thing is, I just really really don't need any more controllers. I have 4 sets of joycons, 4 pro controllers, and the older version of this 8BitDo controller. I went a little nuts for a while and I really need to stop buying more controllers.
Looks like a downgrade to me. Nintendo and MS controllers have always been superior to the PS layout IMO.
@shgamer the nes stick I got the plug didn’t even fit the nes. I mean it was sooooo lose it would just fall out. The hardware is bad too.
This is perfect if i play retro 2D more than modern 3D, but i don't unfortunately. What I'd like is more 3rd party joycon options, at least until this joycon drift issue is rectified in future 1st party joycons. Hori has the "left" joycon with the Dpad, but they aren't investing in a "right". Had 8bitDo invested in this area? Can't find any info...
@YANDMAN You may hate it but it's perfect to others.
@duffmmann Switching between the two isn't an issue IMO. Bigger issue is remembering Triangle = Y =X, etc.
@Kobeskillz
Not the SFC30. It IS really good hardware IMO.
Maybe the NES stick was some of the earlier stuff they made?
You know, it's not that easy to start a business. You have start somewhere and learn from your mistakes, before you can make really good stuff.
Edit: I must admit that I feel a bit stupid, because now I can suddenly see it from your point of view.
Of course it's not nice feeling luring into buying something, that wasn't how it was promised.
It's just that lately I haven't bought anything I really regretted buying, so I must sort of have forgotten how it feels.
But then again it's always advisable doing a bit of research on the internet, before you decide to buy a product,
to see what the common opinion on it is. But that's something you start to learn when you have been "burned" enough
times (speaking from personal experience).
I've been waiting for this since last year! I'm be ordering one after my next pay day.
@jobvd That's purely speculation.
@YANDMAN To you.
@jobvd To you. Nothing is perfect.
@YANDMAN I disagree.
@Roam85 Yes.
@nintendoknife 8BitDo tends to only release one revision of a model of their controller per year. Next February - June seems likely for an M30 Pro, hopefully followed by the M30 Pro+ the year after that.
@miitomobenji 20 Hour Battery Life, 4 Hours to recharge, can be easily swapped out for 2 AA Batteries. No screws required, just pop off the back panel like a TV remote.
@jobvd No you don't, stop lying to yourself.
I've yet to buy one of these 8bitdo's, but I'm definitely interested since I'm planning to buy one or two once I get ready to invest in FPGA clone consoles.
Reminds me of the Wii Pro Controller. I have 8bitdo SN30 (SF30 in my case) and love it. Just bought it a month or two ago and is one of my favorite controller, the other being DualShock.
@AnnoyingFrenzy controller does have rumble. Reviewer mentions it when talking about the configuration software.
I 3D printed the grips for my SN30 Pro, pretty nice. Has a slot on the bottom so I can see the player lights. Has slots on top for me to plug in the charge cable, see the charge light and get to the pair button
@YANDMAN I'm not.
Waiting on mine to be delivered today. Looking forward to trying out the software to program some macros for Street Fighter 3rd Strike.
@jobvd You don't even know anymore. Just go with what makes you feel most comfortable.
I got 'em. I don't know how I feel about this model yet. The d-pad certainly isn't as tight as on the SN30 Pro. However, not as loose as the N30 Pro. My immediate first impression is that I like the PS4 controller (with switch adapter) better. That may change completely. We'll see. FYI, one shipped with Firmware v 1 (either .0 or .3, don't remember) and the other shipped with firmware v 3.0. I updated both before binding them to the Switch.
How is the rumble/vibration on this?
@YANDMAN not true.
@jobvd You wouldn't know.
@YANDMAN stop faking, fanboy.
@jobvd Awww
