Re: Nintendo Download: 10th January (North America)

gangsterswedish

Already pre-ordered NSMBU, Tales of Vesperia, and Mario & Luigi; heading out to pick all 3 up tomorrow. Might be one less title I'll ever play on my old, dusty Wii U in the future, but hey, having NSMBU on Switch means putting off hooking that stupid sensor bar up awhile longer, at least until I get the urge to replay Wonderful 101 anyway.

Re: Talking Point: Come In Nintendo 3DS, Your Time Is Up

gangsterswedish

Whatever. I'm not yet ready to let the 3DS die, despite owning a Switch and every other current gen system. There's something so insanely charming about the 3DS that makes me want to love it, despite the fact that it was mostly old technology when it came out. And this backlog of RPGs I'll probably never get entirely through? Gold like no other system can claim. I'll be buying new 3DS titles until there are no more new 3DS titles to buy.

Re: Review: Ark: Survival Evolved - An Ambitious Survival Epic That's Borderline Unplayable On Switch

gangsterswedish

I've struggled with Ark for a couple of years now, both on a very high-powered gaming PC and more recently on Xbox One X. That anyone thought this was going to run on Switch is absurd right out of the gate. Ark is a game of endless 40GB patches and near-awful performance on my PC at 1080p, or 1440p on XB1X, so why would 720p (or less) on the Switch be any better?

For as much as I really want to love this game, it's been 100% disappointment through and through. This is simply one more place where Ark has let me down and failed to live up to its initial promise and/or hype, as far as I'm concerned.

Not shocked at all. I expected a 2/10 to be honest.

Re: Soapbox: I'm Causing The Slow Death Of Gaming Magazines, And It Hurts

gangsterswedish

A very thoughtfully written article here.

I'm to blame for the slow death of gaming magazines as well, though I didn't even realize it until I saw a bin full of old back issues of GamePro (US) at a local thrift store a few months ago.

Once upon a time I would buy at least 3 or 4 gaming magazines a month. During the 80s and 90s, gaming magazines were where I got all of my news – from the Atari days to the launch of the Dreamcast. Somewhere along the way though, I simply quit buying them, and to be honest, I didn't even really notice that I had.

Gamestop still sends me a copy of Game Informer every month. Generally by the time it reaches my mailbox I've already read the bulk of the 'news' that's contained therein, making it sort of a waste of paper.

Sad? Yes. Can we do anything about it? Unfortunately no, it's much too late.

Re: Telltale Games Begins Majority Studio Closure With Mass Layoffs

gangsterswedish

So, let me get this straight, you can sustain a business by releasing the same game over and over again? Then how does EA still exist?!

Seriously though, sad to see anyone hit the unemployment line, but I was over Telltale's "games" sometime around Minecraft Story Mode. The two Batman titles were a big high point for me, but how many times can you really perform QTA actions and call it a "game?"

Oh wait, PS4 Spider-Man, I forgot. Man, bad luck Telltale...

Re: Switch eShop Maintenance Scheduled For This Evening, Nintendo Online Service Ready To Go

gangsterswedish

Oh Nintendo. I would gladly pay 3x more for a service that delivered 3x more. I'll buy into it anyway simply to enjoy the continued thrill that is getting beat up by Japanese Mario Kart gamers, but all of the supposed bells and whistles of a tiny NES library and the rest, I couldn't possibly care less. Cloud saves sound good in theory but what I'd REALLY like is an online service that functions more like Xbox Live and allows me to actually use my purchases the two Switch units in my household. Imagine the possibilities.

Re: Yooka-Laylee Physical Editions Sell Out In Minutes, One Last Chance To Pre-Order Later Today

gangsterswedish

I got into the Limited Run thing for a few months last year, nabbing several physical copies of what were really some of the more mediocre PS Vita titles ever released. And for what? I paid too much for no reason. Of the entire lot, only Y’s Origins is even a worthwhile game as it turns out. Sure, this one comes with a non-functional (WTF?!) N64 cartridge - which is mildly cool I guess - but it’s still the same slightly-below-average platformer in new clothing. Who profits from any of this? Are we really protecting our gaming heritage into future decades, or are we just lining the pockets of some rather clever chaps with decent marketing? I suspect the latter. Count me out. I feel like I could’ve spent the $300 I “invested” in my Limited Run games on much, much better things.

Re: Cosmic Star Heroine Dev Explains Its "Frustrating" Experience Working With Nintendo

gangsterswedish

While enjoying Cosmic Star Heroine on my Vita earlier this year, I looked into the games history and naturally came across several interviews with Robert Boyd. In at least half of them he comes across as more than a bit rude, and controversial for controvery’s sake. If he isn’t trashing Nintendo’s PR, he’s whining about Xbox’s ratings/user review system. The guy clearly has some issues when it comes to this sort of thing and has no problem crying foul whenever he feels like he hasn’t had the red carpet rolled out to him. Whether or not his complaints are valid, I can’t say, but it speaks volumes about him that it’s somewhat difficult to actually find an interview where he doesn’t complain about something.

That said, yeah, I’m sure Nintendo could be a bit better about their eShop - it’s trash if I’m putting it nicely, and sure, Xbox user reviews (or any platforms user reviews) are sometimes suspect. I think we all know that. But in the end, you’re doing yourself no favors by being the perpetual squeaky wheel. CSH as a game deserves better treatment from both Nintendo AND its own developer. If you dig turn-based RPGs, give it a try.

Re: Feature: Is Tokyo's Arcade Scene Really Dying?

gangsterswedish

I just spent the last two weeks in Tokyo on business and used my downtime to check out the Akihabara arcade scene. I intended to only go once as I wanted to do some sightseeing elsewhere while I was there but dang, Akihabara's arcades are addicting to an old school arcade junkie like me. I went back 5 times and spent about 25 hours there. Infectious atmosphere for a guy like me if ever there was one. If the scene is dying, man I can't imagine how active it used to be.

Re: Review: ARMS (Switch)

@Al_Godoy I must be the only person alive that actually liked Federation Force. Granted, I'm not a diehard (or even casual) Metroid fan but I did enjoy it quite a bit.

Re: Review: ARMS (Switch)

gangsterswedish

So happy to read a positive review of this one. While I've mostly enjoyed my Switch thus far, as a Wii U owner I've been a bit disappointed to see the number of remakes/ports that Nintendo has been putting out (not the least of which is the Pokken "Deluxe" announcement from yesterday). A unique game likes ARMS can really go either way, it's either the next Splatoon or the next 1-2 Switch, I'm very happy to see it's looking to be the former. Excited for my preorder to arrive now.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Needs to Learn Lessons From Its NES Mini Mistakes

gangsterswedish

I walked into a local Gamestop store behind a UPS delivery man that had brought a shipment from Nintendo. I waited as the store clerk opened the box, revealing a single NES Classic, 2 Switch Pro Controllers, and about a half dozen Amiibo. "That's all we ever get from them, just a few things at a time."

You'd think Nintendo was handcrafting these things for sale on Etsy or something.

Meanwhile, the box from the same store's Sony distributer had about 2 dozen PSVR units in it and a ton of games. Supply and demand isn't all that complicated, Nintendo.

Re: Video: Let's See How Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Switch Compares to the Wii U Original

gangsterswedish

I love my Switch and all but how can I possibly be the only person that's more than a little annoyed that the Big AAA Nintendo™ games for it at launch (and right after) are basically Wii U games? MK8 is a 10/10 in my book, sure, but I've already logged hundreds of hours into it in almost 3 years – I wasn't exactly chomping at the bit to play it on the go when no one I know will play it against me. Also, how likely is MK9 now given that I'm pretty sure (correct me if I'm wrong) no Nintendo console has ever had multiple MK games?

All I can say is Thank Goodness for Shovel Knight, World of Goo, and I Am Setsuna for bringing something unique to the Sw....oh wait, right. Oops.

Maybe in a few months when... wait, when IS the first unique Switch game coming out? Is it Super Mario Odyssey? Dang. Long wait.
