Nintendo has revealed the recent release of the Switch Lite helped increase overall system sales in North America. Combined, the original Switch model and Lite model have now sold over 15 million units in this region.
Through September, Switch sales in the US were up by more than 20% year to date. The Switch has also been the best-selling video game system in this location for 10 months in a row, according to the NPD Group.
Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser said the Switch was "creating smiles and enjoying broad appeal" as it entered its third holiday season – with more than 15 million consumers across the US. He also mentioned the diverse selection of games on the way to the system:
And this holiday, we are bringing Nintendo Switch owners even more fresh and unique entertainment experiences, like Ring Fit Adventure, Luigi’s Mansion 3, Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games: Tokyo 2020, adding to the system’s large and diverse library of games.
In terms of software sales in North America, more than 14 games have sold more than one million games – with four of these selling more than 6 million units: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Are you one of these 15 million Switch owners in North America? Have you bought any of the best-selling games? Leave a comment below.

It's nice to see a Nintendo console do well again. The Wii U were dark days for them. I'm already wondering what the life time sales figures will look like.
I bought three of them. One day one, one smash bros, and a new switch lite. I'm part of the problem.
Good for Nintendo... They should have released the LITE on day 1.
"Additionally, multiple games from third-party publishers also achieved significant sales, including Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle from Ubisoft, Minecraft from Mojang AB and Fortnite from Epic Games"
32 months and 15 Million Switch later in the USA and they mention a game from 2017... A $25 budget game... and F2P FortNite as 3rd Party "Hits" on Switch. Why even do this... takes away from the PR victory lap 🙄
The next milestone will be when they surpass Xbox One sales, which is actually very soon.
The Switch isn't quite perfect. But it is my favorite gaming device to date. The core idea of the Switch, it being a hybrid, is just such a fantastic idea! I love it! It's so simple but so effective! Even at home I will switch between TV and portable mode.
Over a hundred games and counting!
@Agramonte
I think Minecraft deserves a mention just due to its sheer popularity, it’s already sold about a million in Japan alone and I’m sure that it’s sold much more than that in the US.
And if it was only selling because it was a “budget title” why isn’t $15 James Pond lighting the world on fire?
But I agree that Fortnite is a weak example.
Greatness! Yeah
@entrixx just like themes, Netflix and Spotify; probably never
Console quality portable gaming, this recipe is golden!
I've bought 3. One day one, another for my girlfriend, and a lite. The lite is my favourite by far. It is everything I ever wanted the Vita to be; I can't give something higher praise than that.
Excellent, there are two Switch in my house and I’ve indirectly contributed to the sale of six more! You’re welcome, Nintendo.
@gloom in 3 months the switch will pass the Xbox one, give or take
I dropped my switch today when opening my locker at work (it slipped out of my backpack when it was tilted, so about a 4-foot fall), and the whole unit landed on the edge of the right Joy-con, I think the right Joy-con rail is bent now. The wire is exposed
I probably can’t use it as a handheld anymore. It still plays games though.
I will need to look to getting a new one but I kind of want to wait for the next version. I don’t want a Lite because it’s so limited by comparison.
So
Europe at 10million a few weeks ago.
Japan nearly at 10million
North Americas at 15million
35million total
Who's left? South Americas? Russia? China?
Worldwide Total sales could be close to 40million!
The result is even more amazing when you consider how poor the Wii U did, amazing turnaround.
How are these numbers compared to PS4, Xbox One and 3DS?
@Lord 10 mil in Japan + 10 mil in Japan + 15 mil in NA = 35 MILLION SALES.
That... that's a LOT more than the Wii U...
“the switch lite is useless no one wants it”
@entrixx Nintendo has always done the Achievements per game in game. I don't see them trying to "copy" xbox/ps4/steam to do a OS achievement system.
After the holidays they'll easily pass 40 million and xbox sales.
@entrixx Never. They had "Accomplishments" system for Wii U, but scrapped it.
@Ventilator
And that's a bad thing ?
@entrixx
Why on earth would we want achievements ?
It's nothing more then a virtual doggie biscuit.
@Toy_Link MineCraft sold 1.2 million even on the failed VITA in Japan. Nothing to do if selling on price or not... Switch needs to sell full price games so publishers actually take the risk on them. Just look at the top 10 for 2019 so far in the US from yesterday.
They been mentioning M+R as a 3rd party success since 2017 now. And not a top seller for Ubi that commands full price anymore.
These are not top 3rd party titles.
@Digitamamon64 "It's nice to see a Nintendo console do well again. The Wii U were dark days for them. I'm already wondering what the life time sales figures will look like."
You do know there was the 2DS/3DS that were selling just as good those time. But you seem to already have amnesia about this part of Nintendo. And seem to only want to be a revisionists.
This was coming and no one was surprised by this expect xbox and sony studio heads whom only can think coffee table console will make their day. But sadly Switch left them behind and isn't looking back.
@bignrules need to take yourself outside to get some air.
@SwitchForce Um ok? Even with the 3DS, the last generation of consoles weren't great times for Nintendo. They reported that they were losing money. Not to mention that the 3DS's launch wasn't good.

The Switch has been out for 2 and a half years and it is outselling the 3DS, which I figured out using this site: https://www.statista.com/statistics/262074/worldwide-sales-of-the-nintendo-3ds-since-2004/
Nintendo recently updated its sales units here for the switch:

My original comment was only saying that I'm happy that they are where they are now at. I'm also curious if the sales will keep up and sell more than the 3DS despite it being a home console (technically).
Another chart here shows that they are doing much better now than during the Wii U era, even with the 3DS behind it's back.

Be a douche somewhere else.
@KitsuneNight Where did i say that?
I have PS3, PS4, Xbox One X and Xbox 360 too which all have achievements/trophies.
In many games this ruins how you play the games.
Also there is people who don't play games at all if it's too hard to get 100% achievements.
Miyamoto hinted at that sometime too, and is probably why they scrapped it.
Xbox One is the only console ever to have a value on Achievements.
Every month when you play selected games, you get points for all you complete.
Points can be converted to real money.
I got several free games on Xbox One because you get rewarded for playing games.
I currently have 16$ in wallet which i got 100% for playing games.
