Re: "I'm A Sucker When It Comes To Story" - PS4/5 Architect Recalls "Transformative" Experience With A GameCube Classic

crudfish

@Medic_alert Pikmin 3 and 4 are great! 4 starts off slow, and made me question whether they had missed the mark, but as it builds momentum it becomes the best of all of them. 2 is brutal. Dropping bombs and random monsters on you at cruel moments, wind or explosions blowing your pikmin off the edges of the stage, those gun turret creatures, etc. I played it recently. It's a frustrating game.

Re: Poll: So, Will You Be Checking Out Switch Online's Virtual Boy Service?

crudfish

This just sounds so awful. An expensive replica that requires a subscription to play its games — so unless you keep paying for the service the thing will just lay around in your house somewhere. For nearly $100 that thing should have its own screen, with the games already installed on it. There is a literal sea of great entertainment content out there in the world, and with so many amazing games, frankly none of these is worth your time. Even if you go with the cheaper version. Go buy Hollow Knight or Steamworld Dig instead.

@wuntyme8
A lot of people say it is a slow burn, so definitely keep that in mind. I didn't think so, personally. The first half is an introduction to the world, and systems, and I really enjoyed the pace. Many people still consider Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter (the 2nd part) to be the best in the whole series. I hope you get a chance to play them! The remake looks great. I went on the same journey as you with the Dragon Quest games. XI was my first, and I loved it. After that I continued on to some of the older games.

@wuntyme8
The perfect way to start is releasing in September. Trails in the Sky: the 1st. It is a remake of the first game, which is where the big, ongoing story starts. I recommend trying it! If you like the games from those other developers you mentioned then this one is definitely worth checking out. The first two games in the series tell an isolated story that has a satisfying conclusion. If you are happy with it and want to move on to other things there is no need to continue on, but you will probably want to keep going.

I really enjoyed this interview! Thank you!
I just finished Child Steel II. I started with the Sky Trilogy a couple of years ago. It is a huge time commitment, but I use games for learning Japanese, and getting to play this series as a means of learning has been a huge gift that I will always be grateful for.
The game key card thing... I mean, he has to be professional in his answers, and not say bad things about Nintendo. Truthfully, Nintendo has probably made it impractical to make a full physical release for 3rd parties. They (3rd party developers) are all doing it, and I am sure they are aware that customers don't prefer it.

Re: Limited Run's Atlus Switch 2 Collector's Edition Is A 'Game-Key Card' Release

crudfish

This is crazy... This should totally come with the full game. That being said, I don't know what it means to be a physical collector anymore. Most switch games won't even let you start the game without downloading an update. These game key-card things are just an extension of what is already a reality. Most of the time the finished games aren't on the card anyway. It's not great. This is the kind of setup that honestly promoted console modding, as at least you can dump your game cards and download updates from the web.

Re: Soapbox: 'Switch 2' Doesn't Really Need Backwards Compatibility

crudfish

It would be a real sad thing if the fantastic Switch library can't enjoy some performance upgrades on its successor console. Games with dynamic resolution (like the Xenoblade games) that were held back so they could run on the limited hardware spec could really use a resolution and framerate boost. I will super excited to see it if it happens. I am not expecting this to be the case though...

Re: Poll: Were You Able To Get The New Super Smash Bros. Ultimate amiibo?

crudfish

The day after preorders were announced I went into my local GameStop and asked if I could pre-order them. I was surprised that there was no problem, and half expected that I wouldn't actually get them when the day came. On release day the employee had doubts as well when I told him I had a pre-order for it — but then he found it when he went to look for it. I didn't see any others in the store. Whew. I don't know how I got so lucky.

Re: Talking Point: Would You Prefer 'Super Mario Odyssey 2' Or A Totally New 3D Mario?

crudfish

I voted for a direct sequel in the poll, but really I think this game needed a solid DLC campaign to fill it out more, rather than a sequel. It was fairly short, and although there are a ton of moons to collect with no real incentive to collecting them I can never bring myself to go try to gather them all. It gets boring. Stuff like that needs to be tied to more story content.

Re: Soapbox: After 10 Years I'm Finally Getting A Wii U, But Where Should I Start?

crudfish

@Dr_Luigi
Wrong! I bought a second one for in case anything happens to the first. This is my go to system for Nintendo's entire history, up to the Switch. With CFW it plays anything. Get an official adapter and a GC controller and you can play GC games natively over HDMI. My son and I are playing Pikmin and Luigi's Mansion on it currently. I just finished Mother 3 a couple of weeks ago on it, using my official Switch online SNES pad. I will never sell my Wii U.

Re: Video: Persona 5 Royal Side-By-Side Graphics Comparison (Switch & PS4)

crudfish

This is the kind of situation that sends my head spinning with indecision. Being able to play this game portably is a clear advantage, and in some ways is the wiser choice. But in the long run I know that the visual degradation will bother me, even if it is slight. Also, after playing Dragon Quest XI S on PS5 I can confirm that 60 fps is really nice, even for a turn-based jrpg. I was a port begger for a P5R Switch release, but I ended up getting the PS5 version... If I could cross-save I would buy both! In my defense, they took a really, really long time to make the Switch version happen. If it had come out a year ago I wouldn't even have had a PS5 yet.
The downside: I will have to be in the same room in the same spot for all 100+ hours of it, and I often travel for work.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Investigates Switch's Lowest Resolution Games

crudfish

Ah, interesting to see this. I have been thinking about how the Switch has such an awesome library, but I feel like half the games suffer from lower resolutions/subpar performance. I recently got a PS5, and am playing Dragon Quest XI S in 4K at 60fps. It feels like a completely different game compared to the Switch version. Until a Switch successor with a performance boost for the current library gets announced I think I am done buying games for Switch. I won't want to play them a few years from now, just like I can't stand to look at Wii games.

Re: Random: Xenoblade Chronicles' Shulk Cutscene Was Originally 'A Little Creepy'

crudfish

@Snatcher
I almost put 2 down after a couple of hours in. The giant gorilla killing me we while I explored over and over again pissed me off — but that was my fault for being careless. If you can forgive the cheesier aspects, and brush up (via the internet) to make sure you are understanding the battle system, it has great characters, a rich world, and deep gameplay. It is now one of my favorite RPGS period, and I have played it three times through. If you can muster the time end energy to commit to it, don't pass it up.
Oh, and switch the audio track to Japanese!! The Japanese cast did an amazing job.

Re: Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Special Edition Pre-Orders Have Gone Live, Did You Get One? (US)

crudfish

What a mess. I managed to get one, but it took a couple of hours of trying. I had the same "cart limit reached" problem as others. Finally managed to get into my cart and get all my info in, but it wouldn't let me confirm... Eventually had to leave for the evening, and thought it was a lost cause, then managed to finally get into my cart again to purchase it from my phone.
After weeks of Twitter alerts and dread over not being available when it went live, I think I will just go for the regular copy next time.

Re: Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Special Edition Will Be Made Available Again At A Later Date (US)

crudfish

@Tyranexx
I don't know that anyone got one. I was there from the first minute after the tweet and the site wouldn't let me make the purchase (same limit reached error). I downloaded Twitter for this. I set the notification as a bird sound, so I would know what it is. There have been multiple tweet notifications a day for a couple of weeks now. I work nights, so they have been disrupting my sleep for days. One time my wife heard it and thought there was an actual bird in the house. And then all this trouble today... I'm pretty close to giving up.

Re: Star Fox Character Designer Wants Nintendo To Port The Wii U Entry To Switch

crudfish

If you took the time to get used to the controls the game became quite addictive, and although it still has its flaws, even without the control scheme, I actually feel that some of the levels are the most fun levels in the series. I agree though that they need to revitalize the series with an actual new entry, with new planets and a new scenario. Throw in a gameplay gimmick like turbulent skies, or a windy star cluster, etc., and the series could be right back on track.

Re: Atlus Announces Soul Hackers 2, But It's Not Coming To Switch

crudfish

@Kirbo100
I even own Nocturne on Switch (and love it), but forgot about it. 😅
I guess I shouldn't post things in the morning before having caffeine.
Still, as far new titles, I don't get it. Maybe it's because the transition to HD gobbled up the smaller teams? Before, we had Etrian Odyssey games, Persona Q, Multiple SMT games, and spin offs. None of them were ports.

Re: Atlus Announces Soul Hackers 2, But It's Not Coming To Switch

crudfish

Atlus Switch support is dismal. SMT V is exclusive, and we got a port of Tokyo Mirage Sessions, but when you look at the number of 3DS titles they offered it really makes me wonder what has happened with them, and why they haven't been seizing the opportunity to have their games on Japan's most popular console.

Re: Nintendo Introduces The Protagonists Of Xenoblade Chronicles 3

crudfish

That trailer is so good. These games are so ambitious that they are really in their own league as far as what they achieve with world-building and storytelling. I can't wait to see what themes and ideas this third game will explore. If you ask me, the first game's ending is a little naive, and this seems poised to address that.

Re: Poll: Do You Have An Issue With Xenoblade Chronicles' Accents?

crudfish

The first Xenoblade game has great voice acting (for a game), and I can't imagine the English cast not being British. The Japanese cast is good too. For the second game, and even the trailer for the third game, the Japanese cast is considerably better, so with that option available I would recommend anyone to play it that way.
