One burning question that we still haven't got to the bottom of here on Nintendo Life is how to display amiibo figures.
Do you keep them in the box or do you take them out of the box and put the model on your shelf. As fantastic as they look in the box, they're arguably better out of it. And if you take them out, you can scan all of them into your games.
Zion, Alex and Felix recently uploaded a video on our Nintendo Life YouTube channel discussing this hot topic, and it's clear everyone has a preference on this one. So check out the video above, vote in our poll, and tell us in the comments why exactly you keep them boxed or take them out.

I've got one boxed. Since the Smash Young Link didn't wind up with any unique functions in BOTW, I just decided to keep him locked away forever. The rest I've opened.
A bit of both for me. I keep the amiibo on display, and when I move I put them back in the boxes.
I keep mine unboxed, but I keep them in a glass display case as well.
I have over 60 amiibo at this point, all unboxed. No way I'd have enough space to display all of those inside their boxes.
Unboxed because I use them in gameplay.
i keep them unboxed and put on my desk, incase they have any use for future releases. i only have 4 amiibo figures, i have alot of Animal Crossing kept somewhere safe though. a few were from Amiibo Festival along with the two amiibos of Isabella and Digby, and the other two amiibos are Villager (Animal Crossing) and Luigi from Smash Bros.
Unboxed because I like to use them and display them. Never been much of a “keep them in the box” collector, I like to open and enjoy.
Unboxed because when it comes to collecting stuff I have very few items to have for the sake of preserving mint. Not to say I don't put plastic shields on my cartridges and stuff but the point is: use the stuff!
120 amiibos unboxed …. I like to live on the edge and poor.
And as @MsMaestroon said… use the stuff!
@Ziondood Why Didn’t They Joke About Atari Bowling?
I only have a few, but I opened them and they just sit on a shelf to be displayed like I feel they should be. And yeah, also used for games. Not a fan of displaying things like that boxed, either.
Unboxed!!!! I like to rip open boxes!!!!!
Of the almost 50 amiibo figures I have, only 3 are boxed: Both versions of Bayonetta (they're probably the gems of my collection and I feel opening one will ruin the other, now if only I had another P1 Bayonetta) and a Light Blue Yarn Yoshi that was bundled with Yoshi's Woolly World.
I also gave my best friend a boxed Green Yarn Yoshi and she told me she plans to keep it that way.
Everything else is out of its box except the two Metroid duos, those are inside their open packages. Also have the Mario cereal box and some amiibo cards, including the Sanrio collaboration ones from Animal Crossing and Shadow Mewtwo from Pokkén Tournament.
One thing I do with the open boxes is to keep the cardboard to eventually make a sorta poster out of them.
Now if I could also get one of those Datel devices to make backups of their data and use an amiibo in both Smash 4 and Ultimate.
About half and half for me. My favourites I unbox and rotate them on my work desk.
I once came across an unopened Twilight Princess Wolf Link amiibo as a thrift store find. Normally I have my amiibo unboxed, but this one presented somewhat of a conundrum, because of the premium associated with this particular amiibo.
Luckily (again), I found someone who was willing to trade his loose Wolf Link amiibo for Animal Crossing: New Horizons. I made the trade, flipped the unopened amiibo on eBay, bought another AC:NH with money from the auction, and still had a decent chunk of change left over.
Not too many times you get to have your cake and eat it too, but it's really, really nice when it happens.
Depends on which games that uses the Amiibos. I collect them and use them so not worry about using them but do that care of them unboxed and stored carefully.
At one point I did about 50/50. Had a wall of amiibo. I eventually opened them all…except for Gold Mario.
Been collecting since release day back in late 2014. I have 180 different amiibo all boxed. They’re all currently housed in about five 27-gallon storage boxes, but I used to have them all lined across where the wall meets the ceiling in a previous home; but that was five years and at least fifty amiibo ago.
They look so much better out of the box. I don't need my house looking like Walmart.
As a father of three young children I have them unboxed for them to be played with. I go by the belief that things I buy should be used and I remembered one time when we visit their grandfather which had some old toys in a monter that the children didn't get to play with how I didn't appreciate that.
Now I will say this. I have needed to superglue some of my amiibos because they loses an arm in fights. 😂 But it's worth it because of the joy I see in my childrens eyes. 🙂👍
I've opened all mine because i dont intend to get rid of them and when I pass they have lower value.
Me Jane occasionally plays with Toad in her box
I cut a circle hole on the bottom so I can use it for NFC while still in the box lol.
Joker is still in his cell, but if P5 R bonuses are on the table he is coming out.
I really don't get it why you want to keep it boxed. You buy them to use them ingame. Also it adds to the plastic waste to keep them in a box.
As lovely as the boxes are, I also want to use most of my amiibo. In fact, I used a bunch today playing Super Mario Odyssey. While most of the moons were found by exploration, amiibo really help in narrowing down the pesky obscure ones. I’ve probably found 70 moons in the last 24 hours alone and have been making a lot of progress in the game given that I haven’t played it in four years (minus very rare and brief sessions in between where I only grabbed a moon or two). With any luck, I’ll probably have 100%ed the game by week’s end.
I unbox them, because how else would I be able to get all the different amiibo Yoshi in Woolly World?
All but 4 boxed in the loft. Others opened but hidden away in a larger box out of sight. Not really sure why I bough them.
I keep a few boxed in my storage, only to resell them later. Usually I buy two of the ones I really like. The ones I keep for myself always get unboxed. I never understood why people keep stuff boxed, except for the "They're worth more boxed" line of reasoning. But if you keep them boxed because of that, your true intention is not collecting, but reselling, imho.
Unboxed had them all boxed for ages but moved apartment twice and just took up way too much room to be any way practical. Also the big amiibo rush died down and pretty much any amiibo is available now. No more importing little Mac and trying to find a villager in new shipments. Now seems 80% of them are easily available at normal prices
I personally don't care about the value they have. They're obviously worth more boxed, but like, I'm not going to sell them anyway. I have all these amiibo because I love having them, and the boxes just take up way too much space.
The only ones I'm keeping boxes are the Yoshi related ones (being all the Yoshi ones and one Poochy), all of which I got 2 of, so I can unbox one and keep one in the box.
Now my unboxed green yarn Yoshi stopped working though, it doesn't seem to scan anymore. 😔 I want to find a replacement but they're so hard to come by without paying scalper prices. And I highly doubt these yarn ones will ever be reproduced.
I unboxed them all, but now i am having doubts regarding the most rare once such as boxboy and gold megaman. Not sure what i am going to do with the Sunbreak amiibo.
I don't have this dilemma, since I don't own any Amiibo. Should I buy one someday, it surely will be unboxed, because it looks better and because I would like to use it.
Yarn Yoshi sounds like one I would like to have.
Boxed of course because depletion value goes down over 50 percent when you take it out of the box especially for Nintendo items…I have Pearl and Marina 2pk and I would not dream of opening it besides I like the Walmart look of my my gaming room.😉
I have 1 boxed and 40ish unboxed.
The only one I kept boxed is Cloud from Final Fantasy 7. He is on my bookshelf with all my other boxed FF7 figures and memorabilia.
I’m a sucker for that game.
@Xiovanni well tasting better than Switch cartridges isn’t that hard lol
I tasted one years ago and I still get that taste in my mouth today
Opened them all. Honestly the boxes are no where near special enough for me to keep them, plus some of the functionality like the MK8 mii costumes, was actually really cool.
Well the whole 4 I own were used so came unboxed anywho.
I have 28 Amiibos boxed and only one unsealed. I've tried to preserve it in it's original package still.
I don't care about the value or having some snobby collection. How can I play with them if I keep them in the box like some weirdo??
As someone who has never had an amiibo before but wants to get one incredibly badly, I'd probably say unboxed since I'm not the kind of guy who wants everything in mint condition (unless we're talking Pokemon cards of course). I just like to hold it in my hands and study it, looking at all the finer details that went into making it.
Ever since I got a new phone they stay boxed, modern phones can emulate the amiibo NFC, allowing my amiibo to retain their boxed value and I can have all amiibo digitally. My 2 rarest boxed amiibo are Gold Shovel Knight and Wolf Link.
I keep all my possessions boxed to preserve their purity.
Just the other day I ordered a washing machine from Amazon. It’s still there, sitting proudly in its cardboard box.
At least I think it’s the washing machine. It could be the Pac-Man arcade unit I ordered. Or the portable wine cellar. Or the chest of draws.
It’s hard to tell without opening them up and defiling their sanctity.
Boxed. Sad but true.
Because of one word.
DUST.
Only boxed are the four BOTW champions, Old school 8-bit Mario, and the Cat Mario/Peach double pack (purely due to space). I've shifted a lot of them (had over 50 at one point, now down to 10/15 or so) due to the family expanding etc. The rest were all unboxed as I have two stands for them - 1 based on the end of the level from SMB1 and the other based on the first level from the original Donkey Kong. The only ones I currently have on display (unboxed) are the three yarn Yoshis (blue, green and pink). In storage are all of the Pokemon amiibo, SSB Sonic, Petey Piranha, Dr Mario and the aforementioned boxed figures.
I do a bit of both - but ...
It took 20+ years, but last year I got back into drumming and, needing to get a new kit after so long, begrudgingly (at first) realized that my collectibles were piles of money waiting to happen. I had a serious CTJ moment and was finally able to shed that "itch" that prevented me from selling my hard-collected stuff. These things take up space, have to be coddled and dusted, categorized and organized, etc. It was incredibly liberating to start offloading them. Seriously - they are just sitting there, including most of my amiibo. I'll always keep my Zelda amiibo and probably Cloud, Pac Man, and 8-bit Mario, but the rest are going! My first pass at selling some rare video game guides and a handful of sought-after amiibo netted me over a grand. The boxed ones were significantly more profitable. Solaire got me over $100, Dark Souls Compendium went for $500.
My "little room" in the basement is slowly achieving focus in terms of what I actually want to keep. But I'm clearing out my impulse buys and never-used stuff. Liberating!
I've been collecting them since they first came out and have a complete set of every UK released Amiibo! ALL are unboxed, and on display on shelves in my home office. They make a great background for Zoom calls!!! 😜 I've never understood this idea to keep things in the original box. They might be worth slightly more, but you're much more likely to make money from the lottery! If it was about making money, I'd be putting my savings in Nintendo shares, not Nintendo product!!! And thats from someone who spent the best part of 20 years selling their product!
The few i have are all unboxed as i use them in the games, display them, and don't have to find space for all the massive boxes.
@Xiovanni is that consensual licking?
I have both. I have probably 65% opened to 35% boxed. There no reason to which ones I opened or kept boxed.
I admit my figure amiibo collecting is extremely sporadic. It’s a ounce in blue moon impulse buy. And this is no disrespect to anyone who keeps them boxed. But it feels like a waste to do so. So short answer is I unbox them and just display them on my tv stand near the Switch. My AC amiibo cards ( which I have more of) just sit in the drawer of my nightstand. I’ll grab them when needed
@sketchturner my thoughts exactly
I have the Octoling tri-pack unopened from when I bought it. Just never got around to opening it and now I don't think I will with the price tag on those. 😅
Most of my other amiibos I have opened, (Guardian, Wolf Link, a few Mario related ones) I hate not using things for their intended purpose.
Unboxed. I'm missing the Smash Toon link, and the TP 30th Aniversay link. But have all the other Zelda ones, and all of Fire Emblem, besides the Chrom variant. I display DK amiibos next to my SNES classic. and others scattered different places
I like to open and enjoy them in games like smash! Where would I put All those boxes anyway?
I usually only collect those I’m interested in and for some that l believed would be rarer I picked an extra up just in case (two jokers and Bayonetta and the extra Robin I had signed by his voice actor.).
I open mine as collect the Smash range and display them. Looking forward to it finally ending though.
And nope, I don't use them in any games.
couldnt care less about amiibos. why am i here?
Use them, then in a drawer.
I have around 30 amiibo. I unbox them and keep them in a carry pouch thing I got from Club Nintendo (back when it was good).
I want to occasionally use them, I'm not a collector in the sense of keeping them boxed hoping one day I can sell them for tremendous value.
