I would have purchased the physical edition, but it always would have bothered me that there wasn't one for VII and IX, so the problem already existed. I'll get it. I'm excited to play it again! This was my favorite back in the day, but I doubt it will retain that place. IX is so good!
@Dilated The Switch's diversity is great. It can fit a number of different lifestyles. I play docked and undocked. Curiously I went all digital with Wii U and 3DS, and have no regrets, but with NS I usually buy physical games.
@Chunkboi79 There's so much coming out. I usually get FE games but I think I might get Oninaki before Three Houses, and I'm not sure I can even swing that one. Everything is taking a back seat when Dragon Quest XI arrives.
@DockEllisD Yeah, and thanks to you too. I'm the same with English dubs. I don't like them in anime either. The voice actors bring their own personality to the characters so I think the Japanese voices are probably better interpretations of them. The first Xenoblade is the only game I've plaid where I thought the English audio might actually surpass the Japanese.
@DockEllisD I see they are calling the Japan version of Oninaki the "Multi-Language" version on Play-Asia, with English support, so I think you are right. And good news for us with Dragon Quest XI S. It was confirmed via Nintendo Direct earlier in the year that Japanese Audio with English Subs will be an option. 👏
@DockEllisD Nice. I can’t figure out if this is even getting a physical release in the West. By the way, you were right about FFX and XII. All versions of XII have English subs with JP audio. For X and X2 even the multi language version I ordered from Play Asia doesn’t have those options. I feel like I was mislead by their advertisements for both games, which made it seem like the Asia version was the only way to play in Japanese with English subs. They were apologetic about it, but I missed out on that reverseable artwork in the US version of FFXII because of it.
Visually this is a real step up from their previous work at Tokyo RPG factory. My game schedule is pretty packed already but if this plays as well as it looks I will definitely give it a shot.
@Andrew5678
@BANJO
I agree with this suggestion. I played through with a Wii-mote, then they came out with the update for the touch controls and I loved them so much I played through the whole game again. It felt so new and innovative — and I usually dislike touch controls.
@Joekun
If they packaged them like this as a collection I reckon there are plenty of people who would pay $40 to have all three Mother games together — this is the way to go. I hope someone over at NOA can see that. It's a tired topic, but tere's really no excuse not to release Mother 3 at this point. They sensor all kinds of things. If they need to change some magypsy sprites (and maybe that uncomfortable scene in the hot spring...) would it really be such a big deal?
I pre-ordered this today. Can't wait to own a physical copy. I have ROMs of all of these but I've never played them, and have been waiting for the right time. I question the lack of a new translation for the first two games (I doubt there are names like Lester and Willy in the JP version of Seiken Desetsu, and it is known that Ted Woolsey had no choice but to make compromises with Secret of Mana) but something about having these relics preserved together untouched on a Switch cart really strikes the right note.
@LUIGITORNADO Lol Try Dragon Quest. There's some mild end of the world type stuff but the heartbeat of the games feels very authentic and down to earth, and the turn-based combat is solid as a rock.
Crash would be cool, and the move sets would probably be fun (although Duck Hunt is probably similar). Admittedly there is no shortage of sword-based fighters in Smash but I would also love to see a Dragon Quest character — Erdrick/Roto or one of the newer characters!
I just played through DQ1, and am going to try to play through 3 and 5 and maybe 8 before 11 comes out. I'm certain I would have loved these games years ago if I had known about them. I'm so glad I will get to play 11 on Switch (and with Japanese audio!).
@Royalblues
Yes, but the Switch has changed the experience of gaming, and playing a big, 100+ hr rpg glued to a particular spot is claustrophobic. Not only that, but I'm a working adult, and can only bend my life so far toward entertainment. Some games only work when they are portable, and you can squeeze in time whenever and wherever. Nothing against PS4, but Atlus will only get my money (and I guess I only get to experience P5) if they bring it to Switch. And trust me. I really, really want to play P5.
@DockEllisD Thanks! I’ll be sure to check there in the future. This is my first time importing a game—but probably not my last. I hope I’m wrong about the audio for XII, but I was ordering the two-cart version of X/X-2 anyway, so it made sense for me to get both.
@DockEllisD Playasia.com had an add about it. The multi-language version has Japanese audio with english sub. I couldn’t find confirmation anywhere that the western versions for X and XII have ever had Japanese audio, in the past or with the Switch release.
I ordered the international versions of this and X from playasia.com to play with Japanese audio. I'm so glad Switch is region free! I don't know why they didn't include that feature for the standard version. It seems to me like there is a large audience of people who prefer foreign films and games in their original language.
Graphically it looks more ambitious than previous games. I skipped Lost Sphere. This one is going to have to get some pretty good reviews to coax me back. I appreciate what Tokyo RPG Factory is aiming to do, but they have played it safe so far. I would love to see them attempt something completely original. Maybe this is it?
Wow. They did it right. I secretly dreamed of Japanese audio but, heck, I wasn't even sure we would get the game in the West. Can't wait! I hope it sells great on the Switch here!
@RasandeRose Is your TV an LG Smart TV? If so go to your Aspect Ratio settings and switch off the auto scanning feature. Thanks @SCAssassin. It worked for me.
@DillonatorWright It started happening immediately after the update. I played around with the resolution settings, tried a different hdmi cable, and messed with TV settings. There is one screen on my TV input settings that seems to indicate that the Switch is not being recognized consistently. It says that there is a device connected, and then nothing, and then connected, etc. It's an LG smart TV.
Anyone else experiencing a screen stutter while in docked mode? It started immediately after I did the 4.0 update... The screen size alternates erratically from full screen to slightly smaller--during gameplay and when navigating the interface.

I was pretty bummed by not having the option of the New 3ds in North America, and it was with a fair amount of resentment mixed with my excitement that I purchased a New 3ds XL. For quite a while I coveted Europe and Japan's smaller, white unit. Then on black friday last year the US finally got it's chance--but I travelled to three different stores and still couldn't get one because they sold so quickly. Luckily a few weeks later I found an Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer bundle with the white New 3ds at Nintendo World New York. I imported a cool set of coverplates from Japan, did a transfer and sold my New 3ds XL. It's really too bad that I missed so much time playing games on it. It is one of my favorite pieces of Nintendo hardware as well.
Hmmm. How about a 30% discount on the game itself, since it was already out on Wii U! It's a bummer to wait for a price drop/discount but I can't justify paying full price for a game I already own.
Maaaaan. I was really hoping for the Japanese audio. With Studio Ghibli films I always watch with Japanese audio and English subtitles. Gestures, expressions and characterizations are pretty much always better in the audio that matches the culture that produced them. The exception being the Star Wars Prequal Trilogy. The voice acting is sssoooo much better in French.
