Re: Toshiba Sounds Alarm About Ongoing Chip Supply Issues

contractcooker

@BloodNinja Demand is WAY up. I think the manufacturers are producing exactly what they forecast several years ago. All this Just-In-Time Lean manufacturing ethos that has been around for a couple decades is coming around to bite them all in the ass. it will work itself out but it might take a year or so longer to stabilize.

@Mando44646 at least for the playstation 5 sales are higher than they were at the same point in the PS4's lifecycle. It's the fastest selling sony console to date. So it's not like they aren't pumping them out. The reason there aren't many exclusives is because the consoles are less than a year old. How many XBONE and PS4 exclusives were there at this point in their lifecycles?

Re: Poll: So, Will You Be Getting A Switch OLED Or Valve Steam Deck?

@TheWingedAvenger wow dude. You need to lay off that Nintendo kool aid. I assume most of us here have a soft spot in our hearts for big N but you’re really taking things to the next level. And not in a good way. Your tastes in video games are just that. YOUR tastes. Not everyone else agrees and that’s a good thing. Variety is the spice of life. Life would be so boring if everyone liked exactly the same things.

Re: Switch OLED Upgrades Reportedly Cost Nintendo "Around $10 More Per Unit"

contractcooker

Man people are crazy if they think a $40 mark up is too much. This is JUST the BOM, doesn't include R&D or any other overhead Nintendo definitely has. Not to mention it matters not what things cost but what people are willing to pay for them. I bet they could have charged $400 and people would still be buying it in droves. I would buy this in a heartbeat if my switch bit the dust. EDIT: @RupeeClock beat me to it

Re: Talking Point: Should We Be Worried About Screen Burn-In With Switch OLED?

@Ravenmaster you're comparing a $3000 computer with a $300 console that can run BOTW for 4 hours on a small battery and then also display it to a large screen. Maybe the switch just isn't for you. Nintendo aren't magic, they can't make performance per watt just appear out of thin air.

Even in your lower end example the GPU alone is as big as the entire switch and consumes FAR more power. You can't make a device as small as a switch and expect it to have performance in line with a desktop computer. Performance takes power (and physical space).

Re: Octopath Traveler Is No Longer A Nintendo Switch Console Exclusive

I have a switch but never picked this up. I have Game Pass so I'm pleased to be able to play Octopath Traveller there. Microsoft has really been killing it when it comes to game pass content recently. I still don't think I will renew game pass once my promotional offer expires (got it for the $1 per month upgrade from Xbox Live Gold) but if you're into subscription services it's really quite good.

Re: Video: Here's Digital Foundry's Technical Analysis Of Crash Bandicoot 4 On Switch

@Yodalovesu "Digital Foundry is a scourge on this industry. Human eyes are perfectly capable of determining if a game is attractive or not. DF, on the other hand, encourages people to judge how attractive something is based on a list of numbers and tech jargon."

I strongly disagree, I really love watching DF videos and find them to be very helpful helping inform my opinion on games/consoles. I would never solely rely on DF to make a decision but I absolutely use the information they present to decide whether or not I want to buy something on a particular platform.

Re: Video: Check Out This Side-By-Side Comparison Of Crash Bandicoot 4 On Switch And PS4 Pro

@HamatoYoshi while @Wavey84 s comment made me roll my eyes a bit they’re not entirely wrong. Doubling FPS halves the minimum possible floor for input lag. Increasing FPS also reduces the need for motion blur though I would argue that 60FPS is already pretty good without motion blur. I have a PS5 and an OLED as well and it IS pretty dope to play on but for me personally there are diminishing returns past 60 FPS. Don’t get me wrong - All other things being equal a higher frame rate is better. The jump from 30 to 60 is very noticeable. The jump from 60 to 120 in my opinion is really nice but not nearly as noticeable. 30 to 60 is like going from DVD to Blu-Ray(1080p). 60 to 120 is like going from Blu-Ray to 4K blu ray.

Edit: before I get ***** for my analogy I know that resolution and frame rate are totally different. But the feeling I get from increasing the frame rate and the delight I experience from that jump are similar to how I felt when switching from lower resolutions to higher. This is, of course, subjective.

Edit x2: also since we are talking about the switch here I’m talking about docked resolution. For a tiny screen I think 720p is totally fine.

Re: Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Gets A Quiet Re-Release On Switch, But With An Important Difference

LOL at all these people crying about high prices of games on switch. It's really incredibly simple. If you want to play The Witcher (or any other game) handheld, you're going to purchase the Switch version. Otherwise you will purchase a different version. CLEARLY the market is bearing these prices with no problem. People are willing to pay a premium to be able to game on the go.

Re: Switch Becomes The Best-Selling Console For 24 Consecutive Months Despite PS5, Xbox Series Launches (US)

contractcooker

@TG16_IS_BAE That's cool that you haven't had any trouble in years but you will admit that an open platform like the PC is inherently more likely to have issues than a closed system like a console. There are simply more moving parts on a PC. The added complexity means it's more likely that something will go wrong on a PC. For example - I play GTA IV on a PC. The cutscenes were stuttering and I spent a good 30 minutes looking on forums how to fix the problem. This led down a rabbit hole of how to get the game running it's best on my PC. I enjoy this type of stuff so it's not that big a deal but a lot of less technically minded folk would probably just abandon the game. On the xbox series x I can play GTA IV locked at 60FPS, upscaled to 4K without having to do ANYTHING. All I'm saying is that it's nice to know exactly what you're getting each time you load up a game. For the most part consoles deliver this type of consistency.

EDIT: I will say this cuts both ways. If you're not happy with the performance of a console there's not much you can do where on the PC you can adjust the graphics settings or even pop in a new GPU and you're good to go for another generation. I'm not trying to preach consoles over PC (or vice-versa). I just think that it's a nuanced decision and that you can't really make blanket statements about what is "best" for everyone. It depends on your priorities.

@TG16_IS_BAE I have a gaming PC, Xbox Series X, PS4 and a switch. While I love gaming on my PC I think it's fair to say that consoles deliver a more reliable experience. Sometimes after a long day at work I just want to chill on the couch with a controller and a beer and not have to worry about drivers, windows updates, etc. I think from a VALUE proposition PC gaming makes the most sense but there are definitely reasons why someone might prefer consoles - ease of use being right up there.

Re: Switch Becomes The Best-Selling Console For 24 Consecutive Months Despite PS5, Xbox Series Launches (US)

@Giygas_95 I would give the nod to Series X. you can play games going back all the way to the original xbox. Not ALL games but most of the big ones and I believe all xbox one games except for those that use Kinect (there aren't many of these). Sony really didn't have any back compatibility on the PS4 but the PS5 can play MOST PS4 games (plus you can purchase popular PS3 games from their online store). Overall the situation is much improved this generation regardless of your platform. It's a pretty great time to be a console gamer.

Re: Switch Becomes The Best-Selling Console For 24 Consecutive Months Despite PS5, Xbox Series Launches (US)

contractcooker

@Giygas_95 As far as backwards compatibility goes both the PS5 and Series X are better (in the case of PS5 MUCH BETTER). Than the previous generation. I just ordered KOTOR II and Grand Theft Auto VI for xbox 360 and cannot wait to play them upscaled and buttery smooth at 60FPS on the series X. Not saying a PC wouldn't be better for backwards compatibility but at least the console makers are acknowledging the desire for back compat.

Edit: The xbox one was already good at back compatibility. I don't want to make it sound like I think the PS5 is better. Just stating the Sony has put in a lot more effort on the back compatibility front this time around.
