An ongoing topic in consumer electronics over recent months has been the challenges in manufacturing, specifically due to issues obtaining key materials for producing chips and components.
It's affected game consoles along with various other products - for example Sony and Microsoft have both struggled to keep up with demand for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. As for Nintendo, it made clear in its annual financial report that it believes it can source the resources it needs for manufacturing, but that there is still uncertainty that it'll fully keep up with demand for Switch.
One major company in the technology manufacturing industry, Toshiba, has now outlined that it expects supply issues to run well into next year. As reported by Bloomberg Takeshi Kamebuchi, a 'director in charge of semiconductors at one of the company’s units', highlighted that its video game customers are among those most concerned about the issues.
We consider which customer faces the most severe situation, such as the risk of the whole production line halting or the business getting obliterated without the supply of chips. Game console makers are among the customers making the strongest demands and I’m sincerely sorry for their frustration as none of them have a 100% satisfaction.
In terms of which parts Nintendo uses from Toshiba, this ifixit teardown of a launch model highlights that the 32GB of internal memory in the system is sourced from the company. Of course manufacturing and parts used continually evolve, but Toshiba's warnings point to the wider ongoing issues in consumer technology manufacturing.
Naturally game companies will be pushing hard to get as many systems in stores as possible as the Holiday season approaches. However, getting hold of shiny new devices may still prove difficult in the coming months.

When hardwares a problem focus on software.
You already sold almost 90 millions of switch, just make new games, new IP's, new major AAA titles, charge $70 for them if you want but just make them already.
@SalvorHardin when software's a problem, focus on vaporware.
Alternative title: NO SWITCH PRO IN 2022.
and this is why PS5/Xbox have no exclusive games of consequence. 3rd parties aren't going to make games specifically for hardware that is in short supply.
They still have v2 Switches so not sure why a OLED would be a problem?
@Mando44646 Returnal, Demon’s Souls, Ratchet and Clank and such are definitely of consequence. Might not fully be my tastes but there’s no argument against them being big games.
@TechEagle That requires effort, and companies don't like putting in effort because effort costs money. They don't like to spend that.
The industry that I work is in a massive mess with poor availabilities so no surprise that is the case elsewhere.
I believe it, the pandemic is still ongoing and demand remains high. That's a bad combination for suppliers.
Covid could have less impact if we had more diverse chip manufacturing sources.
Removed - inappropriate; user is banned
@Mando44646 you're very close. 3rd party devs aren't going to make PS5/Xbox Series exclusive games if the active user base is 40-50% of the actual sales.
Someone gave a very rough guess from the Astro Playroom achievements, assuming everyone has used it once and/or installed it. From the statistic, he thinks about 25% of the PS5 sales are sitting unused (scalpers).
Neither Sony or Microsoft is commenting on their user base at the moment, which may raise short term concerns with developers. Nintendo say Wii-flashes and went... "pull the Pro, leave the OLED model."
@sanderev if Nintendo keeps to their unofficial revision schedule, it's every other year. So... Switch Pro or Switch 2 in 2023.
I’m glad that I’m getting the first batch of the Switch OLED model 😎
@dew12333 is that also a tech industry? I have noticed that best buys stores shelves are damn near bare sometimes.
@WoomyNNYes I thought moving 100% of production in one of the top 4 most important industries entirely to a single country which remains hostile to most of the world was a good idea.
@progx FWIW, PS5 versions cross gen PS games have shown better sales and/or player engagement than PS4 in a few cases, so there's also the argument that the most active PS players are the ones buying 5's, not those still sitting on 4's, regardless of how many are sitting with scalpers.
@nessisonett Returnal and Demon's Souls aren't big games. Arguably they're the few occasions that Sony still remembers the core/enthusiast market exists. Ratchet & Clank is a major game. MLB is (though even that "only" sold 2M - but 2M as a multiplat isn't amazing for a sports title.) Returnal sales data is pretty bleak, though not inconsistent for a smaller 1st party as a percent of install base. And for some unknown reason they just don't talk about Demon's Souls sales data, like, at all..... I can't imagine Returnal outsold it at that piddly sub-600k mark, but OTOH they're happy talking about Returnal's numbers and not Demon's Souls.
@TechEagle @ImmortanJho You're both being ridiculous. They're making games. They've literally never stopped making games. 90 million Switches wouldn't have sold if they weren't making games for them.
unless you got a preorder, you ain't gettin one of these puppies
@Bizzyb No I work within the building trade in the Uk and many many materials are subject to long delivery times or the price is getting increased massively.
@NEStalgia I've heard the same thing from Sony. Some news sites have been calling it out that they are leaving the real number out on purpose. From a marketing standpoint, developer relations as well, you want to put out a strong face. Microsoft... don't know if low Series systems would really effect them since the Xbox One is along for the ride.
This is an extraordinary circumstance, which is why I'm happy Nintendo didn't announce anything new that would cause scalpers to buy up their systems... but I think the OLED, v2 and Lite are going to get gobbled up ultimately if the supply can't catch back up.
@WoomyNNYes Covid could have less impact if we had more diverse chip manufacturing sources.
Lack of REAL Leadership and Diversifying supply chain is what that is called. That's because all they focused on was Profits and not about future supply chain issues.
Couldn't they do a firmware update and give us the 64gb chip instead for v2 Switches that would eliminate the 32gb chip? Granted users would have to get a 7 day trail and upload their cloud save.
@SwitchForce There is some absolute truth to that, but making a foundry is INCREDIBLY hard and expensive. Most of what we think of as "manufacturers" are still going to just a couple of companies for silicon, because building a foundry literally costs billions, not millions.
It should be noted that silicon shortage affects software dev too. High end workstations to build 3D models, render farms for cut scenes, all of these take hardware. Every physical copy of a switch game has silicon in it. The eShop runs on servers that need replacing and upgrading. You want to play Splatoon online? You're depending on hardware that is hard to get.
If you work in technology right now, you've got failing machines and getting replacements is getting trickier and trickier - and when you can get it, it's more expensive. Even if covid vanished tomorrow it's going to be that way for a while
Chip shortages amidst reports of record breaking sales.
Sounds like an excuse to keep prices high for GPUs...
@WhiteUmbrella 💖🐬
@Clarice It's less about people getting sick, and more about people not going back to work, because theyre being paid to stay home. Get rid of the covid-unemployment policy and that would change.
Okay that is fine now make some in new games. Everything this year I am either not intrested in like Metroid and Pokémon or it is just a party game. At this rate my game of the year will be lego marvel superheroes. Which now that I think about it is not a bad thing
@LikwidYoshi Dude yes, this so much. At work, we have been short-staffed for months, simply because people aren't applying. Probably because of the limitless covid fund. Yet, every establishment in my immediate area is open and fully operational. Healthy people need to get back to work, and do their small part to contribute to society.
@Mando44646 at least for the playstation 5 sales are higher than they were at the same point in the PS4's lifecycle. It's the fastest selling sony console to date. So it's not like they aren't pumping them out. The reason there aren't many exclusives is because the consoles are less than a year old. How many XBONE and PS4 exclusives were there at this point in their lifecycles?
I'm not sure why there is even a chip shortage in the first place. Is it China ramping down production to create an artificial shortage in order to economically strangle the rest of the rest the world?
@BloodNinja Demand is WAY up. I think the manufacturers are producing exactly what they forecast several years ago. All this Just-In-Time Lean manufacturing ethos that has been around for a couple decades is coming around to bite them all in the ass. it will work itself out but it might take a year or so longer to stabilize.
@BloodNinja I believe the covid related unemployment benefit is coming to an end this month, at least in the US.
@Clarice "They should force all employees to take the vaccine and fire those who refuse. For sure it's the only way out of this crisis."
The vaccines have already failed for several reasons: 1) There's the massive human rights implication that arise from effectively forcing people to take medications that are experimental and unproven and for which there has been a disproportionately high rate of negative outcomes; 2) We already know that the vaccines have limited effectiveness at best. Not only do they not actually stop someone from contracting and spreading the virus, but they are only good for about six-months, at which point they leave a gaping hole in your immune system that has to be plugged with repeated booster shots; 3) Even in ideal circumstances, it is impossible to get the vaccine out fast enough to stop a virus before it can mutate and render the vaccine worthless.
The case study here is Israel which has one of the highest rates of vaccine compliance in the world but is still seeing some of the highest rates of infections and hospitalizations from the Chinese cornavirus.
Ah. And the switch pro people will continue to ignore this, saying that Nintendo has been stockpiling chips to produce it..
@BloodNinja Except it's affecting everything and the slightly increased prices wouldn't come close to making up for what they could have sold if supply was good. Car manufacturers are, for instance, actually shutting down production of some vehicles. Appliance wait lists are a thing. Delayed and/or lost revenue would outstrip any price hike.
@Tsusasi Slightly? Heh.
@Clarice Ah, if only things were that simple. Were it a flu vaccine, I don't think anyone would bat an eye, since most people are aware of it's efficacy. But since the covid vaccines are still fairly experimental, having people do it by force would be tyrannical. Heck, being forced to do anything at all is tyrannical. And of course, if the people agree to allow governments or employers to force them to do something, then what will be the next thing that is forced upon them?
The situation needs more balance. People need to stop politicizing an illness. Diseases don't care who you voted for or what you believe in; they'll either infect you or they will not infect you, simple as that. But, we live in a society where our survival is taken extremely for granted until things are too late.
Return to your breathing. Return to the straightness of your spine. Pay attention to how your sit bones feel against a chair, or how your feet feel against a floor. Notice your busy thoughts but do not engage them, then let them settle to the depths of the pond. It's the only way to find peace in all this chaos.
I think people underestimated the chip shortage, especially prior to the OLED reveal
@Mountain_Man Booster shots are recommended once every 8 months, that's not so bad until something better is developed. As to the rest of your comment, I'm not sure how much research has been put into it, what are your sources? You quote a country as a case study, but I'm curious if you have read any medical journals on the topic? I would be curious about reading them, as well.
@contractcooker I hope so. It will be nice to see people return to work. There is meaning behind good, honest work, and it will help people discover themselves.
@nessisonett Demon Souls is a port easily available on PS3. Returnal is very niche.
Ratchet was fantastic. One of my GOTYs. Not really a system seller on its own. Not compared to something like Horizon 2 or God of War 2
@Mando44646 Demon’s Souls isn’t a port. It’s a full on remake. Come on.
@nessisonett its still the same game. Shadow of the Colossus on PS4 was the same as Shadow of the Colossus on PS2, just prettier and plays more smoothly. Same here
My point being its a PS3 game and not a crown jewel next gen new experience. I have yet to play anything exclusive to PS5 that really makes me excited about a PS5 over a PS4. Its why I tell folks to wait and avoid scalpers. Nothing to justify either new console yet (especially with Horizon 2 and Halo being back comp)
@BloodNinja unfortunately, I don’t think anything better will be developed anytime soon. Lack of effective leadership and spread of misinformation kinda doomed us. The virus has been left to spread and mutate for a little too long
Glad I got my pre order in for my OLED model as they seem to be all sold out.
@nessisonett @Mando44646
If you write your comment viewed from the other direction it makes a little more sense. So instead of:
"and this is why PS5/Xbox have no exclusive games of consequence. 3rd parties aren't going to make games specifically for hardware that is in short supply."
you explain it as:
PS5/Xbox aren't getting any exclusive games of consequence when there are around 150 million PS4 and X1 consoles out there ready to play them.
Had either PS4 or X1 crashed and burned like Wii U we may be seeing a lot more next gen exclusives. But too many 10s of millions of gamers to leave all that money on the table.
So while I agree w/ the games of consequence part for Returnal, R&C - which I tried to purchase a PS5 to play - and a remake, I think it has more to do w/ how many last gen consoles are still out there that can play the games. The reason God of War and Horizon are also last gen isn't b/c PS5 is hard to get, it's b/c 100m PS4 were sold.
PS5 has outsold PS4 at this point in their lifecycles, so you can't say PS5 isn't selling well b/c of chip shortages, but it's also the fastest selling Sony console ever. So it's not about not making games for consoles that are in short supply, it's about also making games for consoles that have sold 100m. Which Microsoft has said all along.
And if the games can run - not you Cyberpunk - then why not?
https://www.cnet.com/tech/computing/ps5-sales-surpass-10-million-after-8-months/
But I'm never going to be able to walk into a store and buy a PS5 off of a shelf in this lifetime, am I? 😝
Oh well, what a waste of money. Now I can see the poor graphics even clearer! WOOHOO!
@Ramen756 What you said, and also the fact that people will outright ignore safety precautions.
@nessisonett I don't know what to call Demon's Souls. Under the hood, it's identical to the PS3 version, glitches and all (save for the item dupe exploit, and the added luck glitch, hooboy) but it's exterior has been drastically updated. I guess it's just a graphical overhaul, since nothing else is different?
Well that's ok! Atleast this year we got a 10 year old port coupled with a worthless toy and the upcoming Metroid Dread.
Oh yeah, it's a party in here!
I'm just smiling at the chaps already own a switch but are going to spend even more for the same thing just with a slightly bigger display.
Nintendo, always looking out for the consumer! <3
Potato chips are also in short supply.
According to a new report, the worldwide chip shortage is impacting the agriculture industry that may last for a couple of years and has already impacted the price of potato chips.
https://www.nxtmine.com/silicon-chip-shortage-leads-to-potato-chip-shortage-farmers-halt-equipment-shipments-to-dealers/
@Frailbay30 @Fangleman32 You must think you're so funny.
@BrazillianCara I do =D
managed to grab a pre-order of the oled back in Argos, really good for getting consoles since they get about 10,000 units and they're sent to local areas, if you'll find them anywhere it's probably going to be there
For that long? Sure.
Everyone above: More games will mean more system sales too.
This is a worldwide problem in more then just the electronics industry. Every industry is breaking down, shortages, long waits on orders, increased prices.
I am hoping to get a launch switch oled. I could not get a preorder and am hoping I can get one at my work, but every once in a while, we get word of like 10 ps5’s that arrived, and even us workers go on break and stand in line just to have them gone before we can get one. I am hoping to pick up both Metroid and oled switch at the same time.
@progx 2023 would be too late for this gen, also I don't really see Nintendo doing a "Switch 2". That is not something they usually do. I don't know what the next console is going to be, but it won't be a "Switch" (in name).
I do wonder if they would make an ulitmate Wii U like Switch, meaning being able to stream games wirelessly to the TV with dual screen capabilities (one screen on device, one on TV), but also fully optional for mobile play or multiplayer. (host on device & tv, others connected on device) and just handheld play (only on device).
And ofcourse allowing for "just on TV" play where the device's screen is turned off and you play with a Pro controller and VR streamed from the device.
It won't be a Switch, because it won't dock and won't have removable controllers. I am calling this "device" the DS Air. But that's just me.
We have around 400 laptops on order for people working at home but I think we get around 20 every 3 weeks as suppliers just can't secure large numbers of stock.
I did read somewhere that the company making the semi conductors didn't want to expand as after they caught up with orders they will be left with factory's and staff no longer needed which is understandable.
Even Vales STEAM DECK can only handle small amounts of shipments this side of Christmas. I think the new OLED Switch stock will be fine as its only the new screen Nintendo needed to source.
@Total_Weirdo The Switch OLED is completely sold out here in less than a day of pre-orders (luckily I got one pre-ordered)
@sanderev
Very.co.uk has more preorders available right now matey both white and the red and blue.
@Total_Weirdo I don't live in the UK. Here in the Netherlands all preorders are long gone now.
Holding out till next year when Oled v2 drops. Everything is the same, just now an extra 30 mins of battery life all for the low price of 400$
@sanderev The Switch OLED stock should fulfill all preorders worldwide but obviously December time they will be stupid money on eBay as shops will run out of stock.
I got a normal Switch but I have also gone for the OLED model as well. Mainly for the slightly larger screen as I enjoy handheld mode and want the best experience.
Funny enough I sold my PS5 disc version 2 weeks ago as I play my Switch so much. I still got nearly £200 extra for my console even its pre-owned but perfect condition etc
We are coming up to a year for these current gen consoles but people are still struggling to find them in the shops.
Christmas time will definitely be instresting tech wise.
@Vexx234
I think nintendo we stop ordering the old screens soon and the OLED will be the base model Switch.
Hopefully Nvidia will create a new chipset that's on par with a PS4 and has some neat upscaling software which they have designed and can be adapted to the new switch hardware in Dock mode.
Definitely the hybrid gaming model is the way forward for Nintendo but how they handle it will be interesting as we all know the marketing disaster they had with the Wii U to consumers.
@TechEagle
Gotta keep going until they convince all 116.4 million players who bought a PS4 to buy a Switch. Then it'll be worth slowing down.
@sanderev for a new version of the Switch? With newer components? It wouldn’t too late, it would be on time. Nintendo has added and/or revised the Switch family every other year. They’re not looking at generations any more, I think they’re moving forward with ARM powered devices running their Switch software for years to come.
For Nintendo giving Apple exclusivity on Super Mario Run, I would imagine they paid for it and they asked for their iOS playbook. The Switch is more in line with Apple, Samsung and other device companies than Sony and Microsoft’s “consoles.”
@TechEagle @SalvorHardin It's not that simple. Software directly influences hardware demand. More and better software means more people who want the hardware. Both need to be prioritized. It's just a tough situation all-around.
And people wonder why a Pro hasn't been announced yet...
with this chip shortage could we expect the Switch sucessor sooner then planed?
Didn't Nintendo buy approximately 3 shed loads of chips recently. I think they know what they are on for.
@TechEagle That's... what Nintendo does though? Do you want AAA games each month or...?
@contractcooker "How many XBONE and PS4 exclusives were there at this point in their lifecycles?"
Within a year of release there was:
PS4: Knack, Killzone, Resogun, Infamous SS, LittleBigPlanet 3, and a TLOU remaster
XBO: Crimson Dragon, Dead Rising 3, Forza 5, Killer Instinct, Ryse, Zoo Tycoon, Sunset Overdrive, Halo MCC
And I am sure I am missing some 1st party games that also released in 2013-2014. And this omits 3rd party games.
In 2020-2021, we've seen:
PS5: Demon Souls remaster, Returnal, Ratchet and Clank
Xbox Series: Flight Simulator. Halo 6 and Forza Horizon 5 will be on both gens, so they don't count
This is a pretty significant difference
@rjejr it doesn't seem likely to ever be able to walk in a buy a new gen console, haha. At least for another year or so.
But like I said, I don't think its necessary. Don't kill yourself trying to find one. I'd have missed Ratchet a bit, but thats the only game I've played that even remotely justifies the time I put into tracking a PS5 down
@Mando44646 TLOU isn’t exclusive. Aside from that that’s about the same number of exclusives as this generation. This is just how it goes.
@Mando44646 Yeah I'm not killing myself. I'm barely even looking now. But as a father of 2 teens when the holidays come I'll need to make some effort. But I'm not paying scalpers or buying non-discounted bundles, I'm no easy mark. 😉
Some day, probably, I guess.😝
@Giancarlothomaz I think the opposite would be true. The covid pandemic mixed with chip shortages is going to extend the console life of the switch, ps5, and X. All three consoles may linger for eight years before we see a proper replacement.
@Giancarlothomaz
Sooner than planned?
If anything, any Switch successor may be delayed due to the chip shortage.
@Mando44646 Dream, dreaaaam.
@Mountain_Man You can't just say "Well it's not perfect so I'll just not get it" The flu vaccine doesn't stop the flu either
@OnlyItsMeReid Yeah, i don't get peoples stance against the vaccine. No one promised you'd be invincible from Covid after getting it.
@progx Nintendo is a company that sells games for new hardware. Which means they live for hardware exclusivity. (or generation) That's why they are different from Microsoft at least, MS just wants to sell you subscriptions (they, MS, make most money from stuff like Azure, Microsoft 365 and GamePass)
Sony is a lot like Nintendo, needing to sell new hardware with new exclusive games for a lot of new licensing fees. Sony currently only still releases PS4 games because the PS5 is near impossible to get right now. Most XBOX games will, for the foreseeable future, run fine on the XBOX ONE. (At least the first party titles) Even though it's rather easy to get a Series S now here. (Series X is just as impossible as a PS5)
Apple makes money by selling hardware and taking 15%-30% of sales on the App Store. If you would take that premium away from them (which Epic Games and some governments want) they will need to rethink their business structure. And I think that Apple will move a lot into new subscription models (like MS has) to make up for it.
Google makes money by selling your data. They can do that whatever way they want. And they will.
The "console hardware generation"-thing is actually needed for Nintendo to continue their business. Because why would you buy new hardware for the same games? Or how will you determine what games are exclusive to which hardware?
So let's say Nintendo releases a Switch Pro in 2023. This Switch pro is 50% more powerful. Existing games need to be patched for this Pro model (90% of the games won't) and new games will be optimised for the pro and won't run on the base Switch, or with terrible quality. How will you sell these games to parents who buy games for their children? Who won't buy a Switch Pro because "we already have a Switch".
That would be the SAME mistake the Wii U made.
No rush for me.
Got RTX 3070 and AMD Ryzen 9 5900X early 2021.
I don't know how much it affects PC handhelds like Steam Deck, but time will tell.
The chips are in shortage because they are being used in mass quantities for military purposes, namely robotics and 5G. Don't expect many new videogame consoles and cartridges to come out in the next two years.
@Mountain_Man please stop spreading lies and misinformation.
That's okay a majority of people are not waiting for Switch OLED anyways as most won't be buying it since it's not really a big upgrade to the base model. Of the people I ask, 3 out 50 are planning to buy the Switch OLED anyways, of those 50, 40 would rather just buy the base Switch instead while the rest are still waiting for Switch Pro or a successor as they already had a Switch or Switch Lite.
@OnlyItsMeReid "The flu vaccine doesn't stop the flu either"
Exactly, because the flu virus, like the Chinese coronavirus, mutates far too quickly for vaccines to be an effective way to combat it. And this is leaving aside just how risky the Chinese coronavirus vaccines are in and of themselves, being based on experimental technology that has never before been used on humans and for which we do not fully understand all the short-term and long-term negative side-effects. Not to mention the fact that the vaccines appear to quickly burn themselves out and require another dose every six-months or so or risk leaving the test subject even more vulnerable to the Chinese coronavirus than they were before. Look at what is happening in Israel if you doubt me.
@Mando44646 exclusives aren't needed anymore apart from PR.
Removed - offensive remarks
@Mando44646 they don't have first party games because 1. they suck. 2. They have good markets on their previous consoles, and that's why all of their upcoming exclusives will be cross platform launches.
The OLED and the overall Switch family will still sell very well. And this just reaffirms that the Switch will stay as it is for the next couple of years, so any speculation should be taken like *****.
@liveswired I love how people who make a habit of accusing others of being “sheep” are almost invariably the most credulous and gullible people around.
@nimnio It's not just the lack of materials. In my hometown we got one of the only companies in the world that manufactures the machines to produce chips. Even tho they are constantly expanding they haven't been able to keep up with the demand for the last 5-10 years or so.
Any recommendations on where to preorder in the US?
I could Google but you’re my peeps!
@KIRO Preorders are already sold out day one announcement. You'll have to wait for the second production run and those might be PreOrder only or will be what comes comes. NL users does highlight if more OLED comes but as of now USA Preorders are already gone-unless Nintendo comes up with more hiding somewhere.
@liveswired exclusives aren't needed anymore apart from PR.
Keeping feeding that to yourself and maybe exclusives won't happen. NOT!
@SwitchForce thanks for the intel. I’m normally a line up at Rockefeller all night kinda person so I’m vexed at this. Meh. Might just grab a lite for now …should be. Ok for Metroid
@liveswired Um... I'm not into the "depopulation" conspiracy theories. I just know that the vaccines are not nearly as safe and effective as we are being told.
The Electronic industry is very complicated, I think it's not a shortage of raw materials, it's a shortage of raw materials from a viable source, meaning some components are made under shady conditions, slavery and the use of under age work force it's a very common practice in many asian countries. So yeah, it's very difficult to meet demands
@EriXz Eh, like first worlders ever gave two cents about child workers. They don't care how the sausage is made, they just want it done.
@Vexx234 i thought the same thing, but having worked on one manufacturing plant in the past I can tell you that some companies do care
@Mountain_Man Neither am I bro. Still forced mandates appearing across the 1st world. Governments don't give two fecks about people, but they all agree there are far too many. This aint about protection.
However the recent move against vaccinating healthy 12-15 year olds in the UK mean they realise they do atleast need a desirable gene pool and work force going forward. 🙌🙌🙌
This may have also factored into Nintendo's decision to stick with the current chipset for OLED model. There may have been more of these chipsets in the pipeline.
There's loads of chips in my local supermarket, so I'm not sure what this article is on about.
How is that for steam deck? Same?
@liveswired exclusives are the only reason I would buy multiple consoles. They are absolutely important if you want a consumer to own more than a single platform
