Re: Random: GQ Calls Video Game Patches "Laziness", And People Are Not Impressed

bobzbulder

I would say that overall, patches are not a bad thing, but nowadays large game companies use it as an excuse to launch unfinished games. They save a lot of money by launching it unfinished and having players do a good chunk of bug testing. What’s worse is that only the companies with money can get away with this as they’re the ones with the big ips that consumers will buy anyway.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl: #90 - Super Paper Mario

I tried this game out, but I just could not play it anymore after the mimic fight. It was just so boring and slow. It takes forever to get anywhere and the platforming is so mundane. It’s not challenging or entertaining at all. To me it just felt like filler. Stretching out the story of the game; which I may mention, is almost nonexistent at the beginning. There is just a bunch of boring text. I’ve also been told that the story picks up later, but I don’t have the patience to get to that.

@Octane I wouldn’t call botw’s open world empty. Around every corner there are korocs, shrines, enemies, weapons, puzzles, armor, and beautiful landscape. Almost every inch of that map has effort put into by the devs. However if you mean that people think that botw’s map is empty because they’ve barely played it and then devs think it’s ok to only copy the openness without anything else, then you would be right.

Re: Soapbox: What Makes A Game A Good Metroidvania Anyway?

bobzbulder

I’d say that it’s the lack of direction given to the player, the feeling of progression, exploration, and game design so good that everything is easily understood with a few seconds of being exposed to it. People always talk about the first goomba in Super Mario Bros. as being amazing design, but Super Metroid surpasses this in every aspect. You are guided to every ability and forced to learn how to use them properly before you are allowed to continue and all of this is done without any text.

Re: Patent Reveals Nintendo Is Working On Upscaling Technology

I think this is more to upscale games that currently don’t run at 1080p and to run games that do hit 1080p at lower resolutions and upscale them to be 1080p which could then result in better frame rates. Doubt this has anything to do with the Bloomberg article from yesterday.

Re: Sonic And Balan Wonderworld Creator Yuji Naka Is Now Making Smartphone Games

bobzbulder

I feel like it wasn’t properly publicized enough that the devs who made Balan were a large part of the problem. I can’t remember who they are, but it was the game devs who were more so responsible for the ill execution of the game. Now of course I think that he did make the terrible choice of removing all of the dialogue (which would have made everything make sense). So at least the technical stuff wasn’t his problem.
Edit: I looked up the devs and they are “Arzest.” They are a mobile and 3ds developer. They made Hey pikmin, the Mario and Luigi bowsers inside story remake so they were definitely the wrong choice to make for a game like balan.

Re: Platinum Would "Definitely" Port Star Fox Zero To Switch, If Given The Opportunity

bobzbulder

The make or break part of zero was the game pad utilization. If they were to port the game it wouldn’t have that so it would make more sense to just create an entirely new game. Also I think that this game was originally intended for the 3ds based off how the dual screen would work better on it and then they didn’t put it on 3ds because it would have been too hard to make.

Re: Learn How To Play Windjammers 2 With This Handy Lesson

@Duncanballs Most devs don’t generally put betas on switch and when they do it seems like it takes more work since they have to create a separate special list for it (at least it seems to be this way based off of beta situations on switch).

They also don’t generally put betas on multiple consoles. Just easier to put out one beta (that is usually on pc) than it is to make one for all platforms. No idea why they did it on PlayStation as well as pc though. Maybe the PlayStation version was just more ready than the switch (and I would assume the Xbox version, also idk if there is a Xbox version just assuming that there is).
