Knuckles the Echidna will make his debut in the upcoming film Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and if you've got any concerns about how he'll be adapted to the big screen, there's no need to worry.
During an interview with Polygon, returning director Jeff Fowler revealed how the voice of Knuckles, Idris Elba, was equally as concerned about getting the famous Sega character "right" to ensure he ended up being the "best version".
"He [Idris] was just so eager to absorb it all, and workshop him [Knuckles] into [the] best version of the character. Which was awesome. It was great to see how much he cared about getting it right."
Jeff went as far as praising Elba's performance, noting how he “absolutely nailed it”. So there you go - there's no need to worry, Knuckles fans. Your favourite video game echidna is in safe hands.
In the same interview, Fowler also went into a bit of detail about what to expect when Sonic and Knuckles meet in the live-action for the first time - likening it to a face-off between Iron Man and Captain America from the Marvel series.
“You’ve got Sonic’s speed, you’ve got Knuckles’ super strength, and we just put them in an environment and let them go at it. It’s like a little Captain America [and] Iron Man; it just offers so much opportunity in terms of fight choreography and action.”
What are your own first impressions of Idris Elba as Knuckles? Will you be heading to the cinema in April next year to see Knuckles face off against Sonic? Tell us down below.

Well, Idris Elba did a great job at the voice of Knuckles IMO
Now you got me interested!
How is idris elba so invested in this
I was waiting to hear him, and I thought he sounded great in the trailer.
Just asking, is Idris doing an accent here? If so, which one is it? I'm terrible with accents
Amazing trailer
Idris Elba is literally the only reason I may consider watching this movie. Good job, casting fellas.
@Jackpaza0508 I don't think Idris ever really does accents. He just kind of channels himself, and magic happens.
So basically he did what he gets paid for.
@Jackpaza0508 I'm hearing his native brit accent. That's just me though.
Edit: actually scrap that, just watched it again and it sounds like a US accent 😅
Poor Idris Elba. He's a professional actor, so I'm sure he did his best to research the character. But between the comics having an overly complicated backstory for Knuckles, and anything the fan community creates that might link back to Tumblr or DeviantArt, its not a straight forward subject to research.
When surfing the web, beware the rocky shoals.
It's certainly different to what we've heard before but at the same time, there's a tiny glint of hope for something familiar after hearing that short line of Idris' Knuckles.
First of all, it's definitely the deepest we've heard Knuckles, but it's also good to actually hear a deep voiced Knuckles again. In the older games, when Knuckles wasn't tricked and ticked-off, he was actually quite a calm and mellowed character. He's naive for not having contact with many people before but he's not necessarily "stupid" which later games soon made him out to be.
I'm excited to possibly see the return of a Knuckles treated respectfully as the diligent protector he once was, taken seriously back to the level of Sonic himself rather than some side character that barely understands his own capabilities.
@Jackpaza0508 In all honesty I think we'll have to hear more lines from him in future trailers (or the full movie) to make that judgement. Some people might pretend they know straight away but truthfully just hearing one line isn't always enough as multiple accents can fluctuate between tone and inflections that easily get mistaken for others. It's all about how it comes together as a whole.
This is just an example but it's actually possible to mistake certain Australian accents for certain British accents sometimes if you make the assumption from minimal sentences. It's just how it is.
From Stringer Bell to Bloodsport, the man is always phenomenal.
"Do I look like I need your power?"
Welcome to Watchmojo and today were listing off the top ten character introductions in movies.
He sounded great in the trailer so i have zero fears.
@Captain_Toad You know you watched them too many times when i read that in the female Watch Mojo voice.
It’s refreshing to see attempts at making these characters cool that aren’t from writers and actors that think cool is dad jokes and anime tropes.
I just love that the general quality of movies and acting has plummeted so drastically that it's now newsworthy that a (voice)actor prepared for the job he was hired to do?
Great casting choice nonetheless.
How the heck am I actually excited for this. Video game movies aren't supposed to be good!? And this is a sequel even! From that little clip Knuckles does sound pretty great, Tails too. Can't wait to see more Jim Carey as well.
@Einherjar I don't think that's it so much. I think it's more that it's nice to hear an actor want to know as much as they can about a character you love so they can portray them well.
You don't hear many stories like this during production and you love to see it.
@teeenytiny why shouldn't he be? its quite a huge franchise, its surely one of the better vdeogame adaptations, its a movie for teens and young folks and if the team behind it isn't a pack of psychopaths, it might also be just fun to work on it. I mean look at Nic Cage and the movies he's doing. Sometimes actors just wanna have some fun. And yeah, maybe, just maybe, money plays another role in this.
@RubyDevilNine would rather the man try and do his own knuckles voice than trying to ape one of many past from 20+ years ago, thanks
it's not like mario where there is a Definitive Voice Actor for the character
@MegaVel91 Yes...but to study the role/character they are about to portray is quite literally their job.
As much as i admire his dedication, this should not be newsworthy like this.
It just shows how starved a movie going audience is for actors who take their job seriously instead of halfassing it because they get their money anyways.
So who is with me for a change.org petition for Keanu Reeves as Shadow?
@TonyTyga90 I think you may be on to something here.
But he still ended up sexy, didn’t he?
I waited to hear his voice, and I can say, I was not disappointed at all.
Sure he has a deep voice in the movie thus far, But I feel like it will shift through the movie, We only heard one line, but so far I really love it, and I think he is doing an amazing job!
The best Knuckles is probably from Sonic X, character is introduced as a friend of Sonic, they fight in the early episodes due to a misunderstanding but the situation is much more believable here vs. in SA1/Advance2 as Knuckles has no way to return to Angel Island. He's locked out, with no other choice but to find a reason to vent his frustrations.
After the fight Knuckles travels to China and saves Sammo Hung, who rewards him with a chaos emerald. The rest is just him acting like a protector with a high sense of justice.
Also, he's voiced by Dan Green here, you can't go wrong with that.
I didn't know that Idris Elba was voicing Knuckles. Still don't really care about this film though.
@TonyTyga90 I never knew that I wanted something so badly as this.
Film director compliments a member of his cast is basically all this is. This is nearly always the way before a film comes out.
I wish Kuckles had an Australian accent though.
The man is an incredible actor that always gives a great performance.
@TonyTyga90 Lord, I think with his kind of voice he would be perfect!
I love that this man has put more work into voicing a cartoon echidna for one movie than Sega has put into the franchise over the last thirty years

I love knuckles ❤
@AlienX sonic x knuckles was my favorite
I only heard one line from Knuckles and I'm already sold. I see now why they went with Idris
No opinion on Idris, no idea who the guy is, and no real reaction to the line in the trailer, buy everything else in this trailer is just so bad. Tales being the usual tales almost saves it, but the Sonic voice actor doesn't fit at all, and the dialogue is 110% cringe 😬 I get that the target market is like 8 year olds, but yeesh
The whole trailer is just awesome.
And yeah they absolutely nailed Knuckles
@RubyDevilNine yeah, very poor va DA BEST!🤣 Come on for real?
He only spoke one line and I'm already convinced!
Wow serious Sonic Adventure vibes, the manhole covers exploding, Tails in his biplane dodging missiles from a huge gunship, the battles with Knuckles, the slightly weird scenario of them wandering around in the real world amongst humans....
@Jackpaza0508 generally he has no accent because he's British and as the British are the original speakers of the English Language, every other English Speaking nation posses an accent.
He puts on an American accent sometimes to cater to the yanks.
@JasmineDragon
Idris Elba can do anything:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNAc6V--z6g
@Jackpaza0508 Yeah he's doing an American accent in this one
@JasmineDragon He does accents from time to time. Watch the Wire to see his Baltimore accent
I just want to know if we'll hear "Do you know the way" anytime in the movie lol. There was a reference to Sanic, so, ijs...
@JasmineDragon Curious why. The first was was surprisingly good, way better than it should have been.
@Enigk
I’ve always imagined Knuckles as a black guy ever since I was a kid playing Sonic 3. He has that classic no nonsense street vibe about his character, but he can also be a real chill dude when it’s not a crisis. SA1 really hit that even further with his theme song, his general characterization, and voice.
@TheRedComet How about a black Australian and we're both happy?
@TonyTyga90 Replace an actual actor with a plank of wood? I hope you're joking.
@earthinheritor Just not interested. I don't watch a lot of movies or TV really, and this just isn't a draw for me. I'd rather play Sonic than watch him.
@JasmineDragon Fair enough. Shame though. The movie was significantly better than any of the games in over a decade.
@Enigk
I’m down for that.
