The Detective Pikachu and Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds has a new movie coming out called Free Guy.
It's an adventure-comedy about an NPC who becomes self-aware in an open-world video game and decides to become the hero of his own story to save the day.
It's got also sorts of video game references in it - including a life-sized Warthog from the Halo universe, and now to promote this upcoming release, 20th Century Studios has shared some Free Guy posters inspired by iconic video game covers.
They reference games like Among Us, Minecraft, Super Mario 64, Mega Man and even Animal Crossing: New Horizons:

Nintendo: Demand!
Okay but that third one. It looks like Final Fight or Fatal Fury, but I don't think its either. The others are all iconic... I'm struggling with that.
Since Nintendo is lawsuit happy, do we think they will try to sue.
Do these violate a copyright or something
I think that Mario 64 one's going to give me nightmares...
@link3710 Street Fighter II
@link3710 close, it's actually street fighter 2
Okay the OG US Mega Man box art spoof is golden.
@link3710
@link3710 Blanka doing a barrel roll.
The Mega Man one is my favorite, it's awful like the original!
@blindsquarel Some of the posters are based on properties that aren't theirs so no
I actually like these, but am I the only one that this movie is trying just a bit to hard at being. .....IDK apart of the video game fandom?
@link3710 oh I thought it was Street fighter 2 , and Ryan was the Blanka pose
@blindsquarel These would fall under "right to parody," so there's no copyright issues with these posters.
@link3710 No, it’s street fighter II. Come on. You really should know this. Like really. There’s a reason that half of the comments are responding to you.
Sarcasm implied. Can never be too careful on this site.
@JR150
And still somehow less cursed
Have no idea if the movie is going to be good, frankly I kind of doubt it, but these posters are fantastic.
@Snatcher Agreed. I too like these but it does feel a little like it's saying "ha, I'm so in on the joke, right guys?" 😄. Were there other kinds of promo you saw for it that made you feel that way? Just curious, it sounded a little like it to me.
That Mega Man one is priceless
I love this, and to be fair I might actually go to the cinema to see this, been waiting on it for ages.
@StefanN Ya, alot of them actually, All the trailers and the actor are kinda pushing it, I mean, it was even at the summer game fest.
Film looks awful
@Snatcher Its getting good reviews over the past week so, IDK, I'll give it a go.
Also, this was meant to come out over a year ago, so, they really need this to make money. Thats why there is a massive push for it. I remember, before covid, Ryan Reynolds was starting the push for Free Guy, but that all stopped in 2020.
I hope it does well.
@readyletsgo Same.
Hey! The Mega Man one isn't the ugliest! Wait, maybe it is.
Have to say, my initial reaction to it was a huge amount of scepticism. But it's been reviewing very positively. A large part of that positivity seems to centre around the fact that it gets videogame culture.
This is a lot like a korean drama I saw on Netflix called Extraordinary You, where a girl who feels like she's the star of her own show, realises she's actually a side character in a comic book about another girl. It's fun but can be a bit slow if you're not into that kind of thing.
If they put in the same amount of love and dedication into the film as they did into making these posters, I don't know why anyone should think it's not going to be good. They look amazing.
Well, it's no Baelin's Route.. But . ok, I'll give it a go.
@LavaTwilight Yeah, I didn't get too far through that one. A lot of K-Dramas seem to go down the "And then they fell in love, and all the original plot fell out the window" route. It's hard to find a good one that keeps the sci-fi element throughout.
@Jayenkai I feel like you're talking about Alice. Man that one sucked. There is a reason that keeps happening but I wont go into it here.
Funny enough I haven't finished EY either... maybe I should, it's been there for several weeks already.
Never heard of the movie, but this posters look pretty cool.
I LOVE the American Mega Man box art design. This is absolutely hilarious and I love that they referenced Mega Man.
@Snatcher Oooh okay, interesting. Thank you!
The trailer looks interesting. I may give it a go. Really digging the poster art.
This movie was delayed by like 3 years. So the New Horizons parody is clearly a new poster. I wonder if all of the parody posters were created more recently by the ad-teams of if any of them are remnants from when they hoped the movie would initially release.
Not /especially/ interested in the movie, will probably catch it on streaming one day, but I do like it when movies do fun stuff like this!
