Re: Nintendo Reiterates That It's Not Interested In Virtual Reality Or 4K Support

For VR, that probably brings up bad memories for Nintendo with the Wii poisoning the well for hardcore gamers, so to speak.

As for 4K, the TVs and monitors aren't that expensive (Best Buy and Microcenter frequently have sales around here for $299 4K TVs), but it takes a lot of horsepower to achieve that kind of resolution. The Xbox One X doesn't reach that standard in most of the games on it at this point, so the PS4 Pro and Switch have no chance to get there. There's also not a lot of content available for that standard yet either. The Switch also has the unique portability factor that excuses them to a point, but they should be seriously considering whether they can invest in the hardware for 4K resolutions on their next console.

Re: ESA Attacks World Health Organisation's Decision To Classify Gaming Addiction As A Mental Disorder

Games are addictive in the same way any activity can be addictive. It hasn't been proven to have any unique factor that would justify it getting its own classification apart from any other non-chemical dependency addiction.

Games can be addictive in the same way gambling or body building or plastic surgery can be addictive. Bear in mind that it is still a serious problem when someone is addicted, mind you.

Re: Guide: The Best Nintendo Switch Micro SD Cards

I'm just going to recommend everyone to go for the name brand cards. Transfer speeds on the off brand ones can be a big problem, and it's pretty easy to get a card from China with a fake file system that purposely mis-states the size of the card. It'll act like it has the whole whatever size it says, but just overwrites your files as you go past the acrual storage size.

Re: Review: L.A. Noire (Switch)

I played it when it came out, and it was good (not great), up until it came to a plot twist two thirds of the way through that made little sense and ruined much of the plot for me.

The open world aspect is on par with Mafia III that was released last year. A lot of detail, but ultimately serves more for the setting rather than being a major draw for the game.

Re: TIME Names the Nintendo Switch Its Number One Gadget of 2017

ballistic90

Back in 2009, I finally switched from the Wii with its lackluster release schedule and overall lacking games to the Xbox 360, and I was blown away with the sheer amount of content available at that moment. I kept the Wii for another 6 months before trading it in, and I didn't look back.

The first year owning the Switch has been giving me the same feeling, (and some of the same games, lol) and it's not even a year on the market. I have had to stop playing good games to make room for great games. To me, that is insane.

Re: Nintendo "Spending A Lot Of Time" Considering YouTube Livestream Monetisation

ballistic90

I understand the idea that livestreams or Let's Plays of games can broadcast secrets, plot twists and spoilers for all to see, but most Nintendo games focus on gameplay. Watching available videos for their games doesn't supplant the experience of playing the game. If we were talking about visual novels, that's one thing. I've never watched a video of Mario Kart 8 and told myself "wow, that was a great game. I don't need to buy it now."

Re: RiME Devs Explain The Difficulty Of Porting The Game To Switch

ballistic90

The more I look at the gameplay videos, I'm wondering if they were just refusing to take the steps required to improve the frame rate. Most games would remove assets or environment beyond a certain distance in order to free up system resources ans to keep a steady frame rate. In this game, they try to refrain from doing that as much as possible, and I think that is a big source of slowdown.

Heck, some properly implemented fog might have helped, and also made it seem more mysterious.

Re: Digital Foundry Gives Its Full Analysis of DOOM on Nintendo Switch

I own Doom on PC, and I'm happy to have it on Switch too. I keep experiencing issues with shadow quality slowing the game to a crawl on PC in lots of sections where a major environment change occurs. It requires minimizing and alt tabbing, and sometimes changes in shader settings to fix it.

The Switch version has an odd audio bug that causes audio to drop out. Of much rather have that issue.

As for resolution, the PS4 and Xbox One had dynamic resolution set and would frequently drop below 1080p there too. I honestly don't mind the performance of Doom on the Switch. The shadows can be pixelated and the textures have issues up close, but it still looks impressive. The frame rate is very solid and I am happy to be playing this on the Joycons. I don't understand what people are complaining about for controls for the game, although I do have a history of playing FPS games on older systems and running at 15 to 24 FPS, so maybe my experience in games is different.

Re: Review: Farming Simulator: Nintendo Switch Edition (Switch)

@SLIGEACH_EIRE The game doesn't have a manual of any kind. Just tutorials. I had to look online at strategy guides for older versions to figure out how to switch to cockpit view (press right stick). That is definitely a problem.

But honestly, I love the game for what it is. My son is 3 and is begging to play this game whenever possible. We start up a tutorial. He drives the tractor into oncoming traffic and eventually into the river. I even heard there's an actual game to it too.

But yeah, old school simulation with some honestly nice graphics. If what I just said excites you, pick it up immediately.
