Merge Games is bringing Red Hook Studios' Darkest Dungeon to retail, it has been revealed.
The award-winning RPG launched last week on the eShop, but fans of boxed games will be pleased to learn that they will be able to get their hands on a physical version very soon.
It's due for release in March 2018, and will feature the original Darkest Dungeon game as well as the two DLC expansions: The Crimson Court and The Shieldbreaker. It's expected to retail for €39.99 / £34.99.
Merge Games’ Managing Director, Luke Keighran, remarked:
We are over the moon to be working with Red Hook Studios. Darkest Dungeon is a fantastic brand and working with the Red Hook team has been a joy. We believe Darkest Dungeon: Ancestral Edition will be warmly welcomed by retailers and fans alike.
Red Hook Studios’ Co-President, Tyler Sigman, said:
Many fans have been clamouring for a physical edition of the game, and Merge Games was the right partner to help us get this done! We're thrilled for people to have the option to buy a retail box...and we're going to be keeping a few copies in our personal libraries, too!
Will you be picking up the physical version of this one? Let us know with a comment.

It would make more sense to announce these physical editions before the game releases. I'm sure there are many people that would have waited for this instead of buying it digitally had they known.
I would have preferred a physical copy but didn't want to wait so I downloaded it instead.
Great news for people who want physical
I was hoping this would happen... will it be available in the EU?
I wish they’d start timing these with the same day as the digital releases!! Quite annoying!
Come on! I just bought it over the weekend!
It's fine, though. I'm happy with the game.
@Orologiaio Even if it isn't, ebay is your region free Switch's best friend.
Nice! I just hope it’s available through Amazon because it needs to ship to Japan at a reasonable shipping price.
Hopefully its the patched version.
Will surely pick this up.
Okay now we know any game that is priced over $20, don't buy because they might announce a physical release shortly after
Nice to see all these indie games getting physical releases for those that want it. Though I like collecting I usually just buy these digital, this one I might make an exception.
This trend is going to kill indies. I am done buying indie games until it releases physically. Or it’s half price digital.
Good thing I didn't buy it yet.
Only $5 more for the physical? Yep. I'll take it.
@NewAdvent £17,99 for base game, this contains the DLC too.
So while this game isn't that big file size wise, and while on all platforms the price is the same, physical Switch version gets the Switch tax (physical PS4 version with dlc will be €/$29,99)
Cool cover art. I am content with my digital copy though. It's a perfect on-the-go game imo. Jump in, do a dungeon run, jump out.
@TheWretchedCrow I prefer to support my friendly local game store, if possible.
I need this
"Impressive haul! If you value such things."
Many fall in the face of chaos; but not this one, not today.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I think it's intentional to grab the double dippers. Which actually makes me quite upset when this happens, because it happens all the time, and I am one that would go physical just about every time I've given the chance. Luckily, I didn't pick this one up yet (Already own it on steam) so I am considering the retail version.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Agreed. I would've bought this day one if I wasn't knee deep in Skyrim and am trying to hold off on buying new games until I finish what I'm currently playing. I'd have been annoyed if I had. I understand that they're waiting to gauge interest before they commit to physical (by seeing how well the digital version sells), but I imagine that there's other ways to do that before the digital version releases.
Does anyone know what the turn around time is between announcing a physical version of an indie game and actually releasing it? I wonder when I should start looking out for this.
Good thing I have been working on my back log. Now I get to decide which version I would like.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Yeah, I fell into this trap myself. I would've waited for the physical version for sure.
Ah well, at least I'm really enjoying it right now.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
While you are of course right, it is rather difficult to know for sure how much demand there is for a certain game on a certain platform, before a release has already happened. And going physical is a relatively big risk for smaller developers.
Certain devs do take that risk though. Axiom Verge was announced for physical Switch release become arriving.
@GraveLordXD yes they announced that it will be on the Switch after Xbox and PS4 sometimes in 2018.
However I have never player Darkest Dungeon and this physical release is like a must buy for me.
I only heard nice things about it!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE And that's the reason I won't buy any digital games for the Switch anymore (I just bought Timbleweed Park so far).
I haven't bought Stardew Valley because I want it boxed in my collection. The same goes for Sonic Mania.
I'm glad I waited for Wonder Boy, and I'm getting it soon.
Hadn't bought this yet since I'm playing Xenoblade chronicles 2 and want to finish it before i start on any other games may have to hold off and grab this physically since I've heard so much good stuff about this game.
Consider this a triple dip.
@roadrunner343
No way this is to get additional business from double-dippers, I’m pretty sure the number of players buying the same title twice for the same platform is minuscule. I think @Pod probably got it right, that smaller developers/publishers needs to wait and see before making the investment.
Dealing with physical goods is a different ballgame.
Most developers would probably prefer to release the physical and downloadable version simultaneously to benefit from reviews/PR efforts which will be concentrated around the initial release date.
@NickFalk I'm making a general statement, not specifically targeted towards Darkest Dungeon. It happens far too often, even with larger titles, where the physical version comes out just a couple months after digital. In many of those cases, I absolutely believe it is to capitalize on additional sales. Especially when far too often companies say "We have no plans on a retail release" or "nothing to announce at this time" then immediately launch a physical version.
Again, I'm making a sweeping, general statement here. I don't know that it is the case with Darkest Dungeon - but I'm fairly confident it happens with other titles.
EDIT: And yes, I'll agree with you and @Pod that a common reason digital releases first is because it is cheaper, quicker, easier, and lets them gauge interest before committing to retail. However, I think devs are also intentionally vague on the matter because they know that if they say "no plans for retail at this time" they will get extra sales.
I'm waiting for the "Color of Madness" DLC before I buy. Still have to finish it on PC.
I was going to wait for a serious discount, but this changes that. Sold.
I will buy this edition to support physical releases
@Deadstanley Shovel Knight needs a physical Switch release, I hope they'll make it happen once all the extra content is available. I'm only going to double dip (after the 3DS version) for a full -manual included- Switch version.
I'm doing exactly what they want me to do lol - Buying it twice..
I knew it was going to come, I read the announcement somewhere on the internet, that’s why I didn’t buy it on the eShop.
If you’re waiting for your next favourite game on the eStores but retail is your thing, just a word of advice: don’t fret, be patient and do researches.
I know it sounds obvious, but not so obvious from what I’ve read on the comments.
Even if you don’t read about a physical copy announcement on NintendoLife don’t stop looking, I’ve read that a physical edition with all the DLCs was going to come out in stores about two weeks before the eShop release date, it was pretty hard resisting not to buy the digital copy on day one, but as many of you guys I love retail and love to have a collection of games piled up on my shelves, so I waited.
As others have said, they need to announce these before digital release. I felt like I got screwed with Rocket League (others too).
@Orologiaio Ciao!
Su Amazon.de c’è già un placeholder di DD, quindi se c’è lì significa che uscirà anche nel resto dell’EU.
Ad ogni modo lo Switch è region free, quindi anche se fosse puoi pure comprarti l’edizione US o JP! ;D
$40!?... nop - that is ok.
@roadrunner343
Intentional vagueness might be a thing, but consider their options.
Flat out saying "We will look in to a physical release if sales are good!" which some developers of course do, signals three things: That they don't know whether it will sell well (not always good for investor relations), that you ought to also buy digital if you want physical which is basically guilting your biggest fans into double dipping (not always good for customer relations), and finally it also signals your intent to go for it, should a possibility to release physically arise, which might end up being much more cumbersome and risky a process than you expected, which will tarnish your credibility as a dev in general.
@Judas_Krimson
Same here. Although I cannot remember where exactly I read it but it was always in the back of my mind, hence I held off digital.
Thank god I didnt press BUY bottom on eshop lol I am waiting for the plastic chip.
@Machine5 well played mate! 😁👌🏽
Retail rules😆🙌🏽🎊🎉
@Donutman the clamber for physical amongst modestly sized games is staggering. Yes, I understand physical for games running many, many gigabytes - even if many require you install them to hard drive - but 'budget' sized games do NOT justify a physical release.
Has nobody been paying attention to the problem people are creating with plastic and it clogging up the seas/shorelines?
@Pod Yup - I don't disagree with your points. It still sucks quite badly from a consumer perspective that wants retail releases. I do believe that some devs are intentionally vague even after they are planning a retail release, which is the part that irks me most. Not that it doesn't make sense from their perspective.
@Machine5 anyway, I’ve read the news on an Italian vg website that Amazon.de has put a placeholder of DD for Switch, so I went to verify and was SO happy, I’m so hyped I’m gonna die, I’ve been waiting to play the damn game for ages 😆🎊🎉
@Pazuzu666 first, I keep my games. 2nd, when you just drop $35 for a game and after you find out it’s the same for a physical, then I got ripped off. It’s hsppened over and over amd at the very least, it should be noticeable cheaper for digital.
Last, I recycle each week more then I put in trash.
The wait pay off, getting this one in physical. Still waiting for Yooka-Laylee physical.
@Biff_ARMStrong yep, thats why I'm waiting on Yooka-Laylee.
Now THIS is what I was hoping for. SOLD!
@Donutman you may recycle each week, as do I, but the sad reality is most doesn't find its way into the system for many, many reasons. The reality needs addressing, and all these physical releases don't help.
Warning, this game may make you emotional: https://youtu.be/0GW-Y445jUc
@Dus You don't "finish" Skyrim, you wander off and do something else.
Even though I own it on pc I was gonna get it on the switch and I swear I was browsing the eshop like 5 minutes ago and I was like "there was a rumor that it'll get a physical release... maybe I should wait". And am I glad I did. Like somebody said earlier, they should announce these physical releases earlier not to screw people like me over
I did wait for the physical release of Axiom Verge. It got delayed several times and I wanted to play that game so much! But, by the time it arrived I already got something else to immerse myself so I only spent 10 minutes with it so far.
I wanted to get Darkest Dungeon since it got announced back then for PC but I waited for a Humble Bundle to include it (it didn't) and the need faded. When it was announced that it is coming to switch I stright up jumped my personal hype train again I immediately bought it from work through nintendo's web interface.
I prefer physical releases though but this time I'm glad that I get to play the game I was so hyped for! Although I will definately get the physical release as well for my collection.

It was the one eshop-only game (besides the upcoming Fe) that I was looking into buying. Since I always go physical when possible, I'm quite pleased with this announcement.
@Dus
Man I hear you that I have been trying to change my game buying habbits because I have a rediculous backlog. So i have been trying to buy less 'launch' games and go to more stategic 'sale price' purchasing.
As for Indies to cart......I guess sometimes they may not know they are going to cart, but if they do they should announce it before digital launch. In most cases you are getting it months earlier digita so for hiehards thats worth something. I get that publishers are trying to protect retail with eShop prices but in many cases physical can be had cheaper (in the usa) which makes digital less attractive unless its on sale. I think digital whould always be marginally cheaper because it is considerably cheaper for the pubs and gamers understand the difference and the many that wan't permanent copies will by physical.
Yeah definitely not buying shop games when they first come out anymore. Hate buying a digital game then finding out later a physical version will also be released.
Was counting on this. Figured the game would be too popular to skip physical, so waited in hopes of this announcement. Will buy on release day.
You people are whining a ton... They don't announce physical because they like to see if the game is profitable first. Many of these indie developers can't afford all the production it takes to get a game to retail. Just cool your jets;they aren't trying to rip you off, they are trying to get you a physical copy if you choose to have one. Good lord.
I get it. Aint mad....all they need to say is a physical copy may be released if the digital does well. Done.
I'm really torn between the need to play a game ASAP and the need to keep a physical copy (I'm a collector). I decided to go digital with Axiom Verge and it's definitely a thing I really regret now: what I do now is going digital only if I'm REALLY confident that physical release will never land (post Axiom Verge, I only did it with The Mummy Demastered so far)
@Judas_Krimson
It’s a great game. Tough as nails and requires patience, but if you have a love of roguelike RPG’s and an appreciation of Lovecraft, you’re in for a treat. Enjoy the turn-based misery!
@roadrunner343
Sure, I get it. I usually do wait a bit with buying the games I'd like in physical form, to see if they show up. I'm usually not in a hurry to play any game. So I let the people who prefer digital, and those that are too excited to wait, take the lead.
Cool, glad it's coming physical...
@Machine5 Oh yes, I’ve been following this game since its release even if I’ve never played it.
And for what concerns Lovecraft... you hit the spot there.
That particular graphic style, that’s what attracted me the most the first time I saw the game.
Roguelikes are one of my favourite genres, better if procedurally generated.
Ironcast, GoNNER, Enter The Gungeon, The Binding Of Isaac, Tumbleseed, Has Been Heroes, Crypt Of The NecroDancer, The Flame In The Flood, Don’t Starve, I love them all, any kind of roguelike, real time, turn based, Survival, shooter, I just can’t get enough of them😆
If i have enough storage space i always prefer digital. Cartridges can get corrupted or lost. They take space and its a nuisance to change cartridges all the time.
