This list needs Tomato Adventure! It was directed by Yoshihiko Maekawa, the same guy who directed Super Mario RPG and Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga, but it was never released outside Japan! It laid the groundwork for the M&L games
None of them look good to me unfortunately. The torch hasn't really been passed from the great Square directors of the 90s and 00s. It feels like a very different studio now.
@I-U True, I guess I just wish the games were more consistently good over the years and more innovative gameplay-wise. With a different producer I think maybe they would be. I think Sakamoto puts more emphasis on the story rather than gameplay mechanics.
@I-U Yoshio Sakamoto did not direct the first Metroid game. That was Satoru Okada. Sakamoto was just a character designer on that game. His first time directing a Metroid game was the third one, Super Metroid, which in my opinion is horribly overrated.
I loved the original game on DS, but this doesn't look great to me from the trailer. Also bad news: Tatsuya Kando is no longer directing, it's Hiroyuki Ito. I wish it weren't!
Edit: Apparently this Hiroyuki Ito is a different person with a similar name to the Hiroyuki Ito who directed FFIX and FFXII. Their romanized names just end up looking the same. You learn something new every day!
I personally don't see any reason to ditch Stardew Valley for any of these other games! I loved the Harvest Moon games for SNES, N64, and Gameboy, but they haven't been exciting to me since then.
Yuji Naka gets way too much attention and credit for creating Sonic. He was just the programmer. He didn't design the characters or art (Naoto Ohshima did). He didn't design the levels (Hirokazu Yasuhara did). He's really riding those coattails.
Once upon a time, Smash Bros was a history lesson on video games that helped introduce people to games they wouldn't normally be acquainted with. Yeah, there's still the spirits, sure. But a long time ago, there were playable characters like Ness from a commercial failure called Earthbound, and Marth and Roy from a series called Fire Emblem that wasn't even released in the West. Heck, there was even the Ice Climbers from an old arcade game and Mr. Game and Watch from an obsolete handheld. R.O.B.? But now it's left the Nintendo history pretense behind in favor of current era advertisement characters, and people are understandably unhappy about it. Geno is important. Super Mario RPG is important. The fact that you personally aren't familiar with it just goes to show how you could benefit from Smash including a "historical" character like Geno. Look at what happened with Fire Emblem after Melee. People are right to be frustrated.
They really should just cut their losses and scrap this game. Metroid is a dead series, as much as people love it. It really does seem like they are reaching after potential sales rather than working creatively for new ideas. They know that Metroid has a big fanbase and they want to deliver on the promise of Metroid Prime 4, but the Metroid format is too limited to innovate on without feeling "not Metroid". The best they can do is put out the same game with better graphics and slap a new title on it, like all the other first person shooters out there. The problem is that's not Nintendo's way of doing things. Hence the development restart. All I can say is good luck to the team behind this, and that I am also available for hire
I just bought a new pro controller, and I was about to send it back because out of the box it was drifting. I thought it was faulty of course. Just downloaded this update and now it works perfectly! What timing!
What does the use of the cloud or not have to do with creating good software people want to play? If cloud gaming is as good as they say it is, wouldn't players not even be able to tell the difference?
@duffmmann My theory is that the Smash games are secretly just Kirby games, and Sakurai tricked everyone into allowing their characters in the games just so Kirby could have more abilities to copy. Think about it: the control scheme for Smash is pretty much the same as the old Kirby games, the last main Kirby game Sakurai directed was Kirby Super Star in 1996, and his next game was Super Smash Bros in 1999. He never returned to Kirby...or did he never stop?
@Chunkboi79 @roadrunner343 @Tempestryke Depends on if you think it's the same team when the lead designer/director of Banjo-Kazooie had nothing to do with Yooka-Laylee or Playtonic. It's kinda like The Beach Boys touring and making music without Brian Wilson, ya know?

The top 5 were all directed by Shinya Kumazaki. I like his games, but it's interesting that they beat out the originals by Masahiro Sakurai.
