@Giancarlothomaz I listened again and I think you are right. It sounds like the kind of made up language that Nintendo likes to use in their games. A bit like the sound the characters make in Animal Crossing
I have been thinking about the games that might be revealed. I have a feeling that the new 3D Mario and the new 3D Donkey Kong will be the same game. I think that it will a Odyssey style game, where (even in single player mode) you’ll tag team between the two and work together to solve puzzles, defeat enemies and collect things. I think it’ll be called something like ‘Mario & Donkey Kong: Banana Bros.’
@ScalenePowers I hope this is the case. The idea of a SEGA Shinobi game having a limited physical release would feel so strange. To me, at least. I am an old man and owned a Master System and felt excitement when I saw those big blue letters on games and arcade cabinets.
@JohnnyMind Thanks for replying. There's an option to get a European physical copy in December from Play Asia for £57 (which is expensive for a standard version, but maybe that price is a placeholder and will come down). I prefer physical games for (what I consider) premium games and I am a big fan of tactical games so I think I'll place a speculative order too
I was really excited to play this, because of all the praise heaped on it. I also really like time travel in films and stories - so my expectations were high. Maybe it was my mood or these expectations but it ultimately was very disappointing. The main aspect was that the time travel aspect didn’t stand up - I can’t recall the specifics but some of the time travel just didn’t make sense to me (within the made-up rules I understand that have been developed since it being used in stories). Maybe I should try again in a few years, but it broke the game for me. Based on the comments I’m worried I will have the same experience with Chrono Trigger.
@ThomGee I rarely use the Switch in handheld mode. I am getting into my middle years and my eyesight isn’t as sharp as it once was. I never had a problem with their other handheld devices, because they were optimised for that purpose. The Switch is a bit of a lucky-dip - some games considered handheld use more than others. I bought the Switch because I want to be able to access the 1st party games, not for the portable aspect. I have a bunch of 3DS and DS consoles - and a big backlog - so when I want handheld I go for them.
@MeanBeanEgg I am right with you. I tend to come in right at the end of a generation, when the device has been refined and is relatively cheap and/or being promoted, and then I hoover up the top 100 games (more or less). I have plenty to get on with - at my current play rate I have about 10 years worth of games in my backlog (spanning from Gameboy to 3DS). I am following the news of course. I look forward to seeing what they do with their properties.
@cosmograph That was the main album for me. It sounded haunted and other wordly at the time. Such a different environment, before the internet - when you had to take chances on things and often had to come to your own view on what you thought. There wasn't that ability to listen to music for free or discuss it, so it was a bit mysterious and more personal. I was into Nirvana at the time as well (?!) I listened to that record on my Mum's turntable in the front room, wearing a black army surplus jacket. Favourite tracks? The time signature on 'Tha' blew my mind open and the bass on 'Aegispolis' nearly blew out the speakers! Man, this has unearthed some memories. I am now a middle aged man, raking leaves in the back garden. Think I'll listen to a couple of album tracks before the football starts. All the best, my friend:)
@cosmograph Your icon takes me back! I bought ‘Selected Ambient Works, 85-92’ on LP in 1993. Based on the word ‘Ambient’ being in the title. Bit of a buzz word in music at that time….
I am in the final maze in Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan. Plants are giving me a beating. First game in the series I have played. Loved it so much I bought the Switch HD collection (and official Nintendo stylus to draw maps with) and the first 2 on original DS cartridges. Love it.
@SabreLevant Cheers. I hear you. It’s a tool that reflects the skill of the people using it. To use a film analogy - if we gave the same digital camcorder to Michael Bay, Martin Scorcese and Adam Sandler we would expect to end up with different looking movies!
Hi there. Reading the comments since my post I get the understanding that the Unreal Engine could be seen as an indication of quality? I really don’t know enough about the pros of cons of each game engine and which ones are used in which games. The article doesn’t really say anything other than it uses ‘Unreal’ - I didn’t (and still don’t know) what this means - is it good, is it bad…I’m still none the wiser!
Super Mario 3D Land is my current #1. I'm a middle aged gamer and for me, that game, at that point in the series hit me as the pinnacle. I remember so many happy evenings playing the game and marvelling at this beautiful miniature 3D world in the palm of my hands. It really was something special to play that kind of Mario game in an armchair, on what was (and still is) my favourite Nintendo console.
I have played Dig 1, 2 and Heist. Each one of them are top drawer for me! If you have a way to play them on the 3DS I would recommend that - the bottom screen works as a metroidvania map/inventory and the 3D effect is well implemented.
@Vexx234 Hello from 2024! Picked this up for a couple of £ in an eshop sale. I agree with you on the whole. This is more of a physics game. There is a fair bit of skill in timing the shots, based on the power and accuracy levels, to allow you to get the 2-shot finish and maximum stars. Also, shots reach further if you don’t use the button that allows you to see exactly where the ball will land. To get maximum stars you need to use these shots - essentially giving a risk/reward element to some shots. As for repetitive? I enjoyed the challenges and so repetition of them wasn’t a problem. I also don’t move on in games until I have cleared a stage - so progression wasn’t a problem. But I could see how this could be an issue. My only gripes were the camera was a bit janky and it crashed a couple of times. But for the price I paid I would recommend it.
@Yalloo Right! There’s a cost of living crisis and we are seeing a race to the bottom. The money is drying up! The whole exchange culture has changed. Old man story - in 1993/94, when I bought my copy of Beastie Boys ‘Ill Comunicaion’ on cassette they let me listen to only half of the first track on headphones. I heard the break beat and I laid down £8.95 on the hunch that the rest would be worth it. And it was! Since YouTube things have really changed - no more screenshots or clips, suggesting what was being offered. They release footage, people dissect them and recut trailers. It’s like a mexican standoff between customers and sellers (“show me the footage! You show me the money? Give me a sample!”). Because of piracy so much stuff is given out for free or riddled with microtransactions. The days of good quality single player campaigns - and people taking a gamble on them - have gone…..I’m sad and will now go have a lie down. Peace
@CarSickKitty CEX rules. If I see one in the town I’m in I always visit. The staff remind me of the ones from video rental/record shops in the 80s and 90s. They seem interested in the culture and almost always have time for a chat. I am enjoying them whilst they are still around. One of the last common High Street shops where the people working there (and visiting) seem invested in it. The only GAME stores I have been to are a bit sad. Just a small corner of a Sports Direct, that seem a bit neglected.
I agree with you 100%. Maybe it’s my age (in my 40s) but there was really something special about having that 3D world in the palm of my hands. Coming from the 2D into 3D it felt like a refinement of everything that had come before - taking everything about Mario that had come before and giving it to us in portable form. I am also influenced by the ‘New’ 3DS XL being my favourite console of all time.
@Ralizah I have a collection of 1126 games. About 85% of them are unplayed. I used to believe I would play them all but had to reconsider when I calculated, at the rate I play games, I will be in my mid-90s when I finished them all. And that’s without buying anymore titles.
Sometimes when I am updating my spreadsheet, cataloguing the latest game I have asked myself why I do it. Your reply really clarifies some of the different motivations and impulses that floated around the back of my mind. I really appreciated reading what you wrote. Best thing I have read in a while. And I mean that.
I know. I just was on Amazon and thought I'd type it in. It was there yesterday but I hesitated. Didn't know they would sell out of pre-orders. It's a shame
@ROBLOGNICK I have never played the game and I prefer to buy physical. I learned that the Archeologist version (base game + DLC I believe) was available for pre-release on Amazon here in the UK for £35. It has already sold out. Probably end up listed on eBay for £100

Re: Switch 2 Pre-Orders Expected To Sell Out "Day One" Due To Limited Unit Allocation
I still have several hundred Wii/DS/3DS/PS3/Switch games in my backlog. So will put in my preorder for the 2.0 version in 2032.

@Dunan That's why I was asking around. PlayAsia has a physical European copy for £57 GBP but it says it isn't releasing until December 🤔

@JohnnyMind Can I ask where you pre-ordered the physical?
