Re: Opinion: I'm Celebrating Super Mario Bros.' 40th Anniversary By Finally Finishing It

The_Nintendo_Expat

I have zero objectivity with this game, because it was my very first game, in 198X, introduced by my grandfather, and we played it over and over again until we finally beat it, and then we beat it over and over again. I was about 4. (I miss you every day, Grandpa.)

given that, here's my question:

"There's a lot here that feels a bit outdated by today's standards (from a 40-year-old game? Never!),"

what are the "lots" of things that feel outdated about this game? I'm really curious. because to me, this is a perfect game, and the only things "outdated" about it are the high challenge level, real penalties for game overs, and obv the old style graphics. ✌️ I'm curious what a much younger player sees as outdated besides those facts.

Thanks for the article! it was very amusing reading the few similarities and many differences in our experiences with this game! ✌️👍❤️

@PinderSchloss

I agree with you, and I'll add: my income probably isn't "above average" but it's decent. I can afford 70-80 dollar and even 450 dollar things, that are worth it. In addition, videogames are important to me and Nintendo has historically been the important games company.

in other words, my business was theirs to lose. making less interesting games and hardware at increasingly higher prices is a good strategy if that's what they are trying to do.

@Tom-Massey

I can see your points, and agree to various extents.

honestly, going in I thought "I don't envy this reviewer." it's tough.

It almost calls for multiple scores, one for the game content and one for the "package." the review format as it stands really works better for new games, as standalone releases. but, that's not your fault and "it is what it is," to a certain extent.

obviously you've put a lot of thought and work into this, and at the end of the day, that's all I can ask! we appreciate your candor, and thoroughness in your replies.

thanks, Tom!

@Suketoudara

completely agree.

this site regularly commits this sin, even sometimes having people who don't like an entire genre review games in that genre.

I mean really, what is the point? just don't review it then.

EDIT -

judgemental statements like this are gross:

"This, friends, is a stark reminder of the strength of nostalgia, an evocative sensation that can stir the heart and cloud the memory."

how does the writer know what is in the mind of a bubsy fan or anyone else? he doesn't. many of these fans probably remember these games rather well, and either like them anyway, or like them for their own reasons.

I found this review somewhat distasteful. and I can't stand bubsy lol.

Re: Talking Point: Is Hollow Knight: Silksong Too Difficult?

The_Nintendo_Expat

And thus, the legend of "pre-nerf Silksong" is born.

I can't vote because I haven't played this game yet, but given the news that the game will updated/nerfed, it seems like at least one of the answers should be or include something like "too hard - bring on the nerfing!"

these are 5 essentially anti-nerfing poll answers, but the article is generally pro-current difficulty, as it is. perhaps intentional?

"I’ve seen a lot of reviews that have said the game lacks originality in its gameplay. Despite reading this, I don’t see how it’s an actual issue. [...] 98% of games in this genre are the same."

I think the more cookie cutter games in a genre, the more imperative there is to stand out in some way ✌️

I feel the same way about metroidvanias these days. simply "being a metroidvania" used to be enough to stand out, but now with so many out there and more to come, most of them are just noise in the line for me. 👍

@Markatron84

LOL I never said I was above complaining 😅✌️

BTW I second your request for more filters, specifically I would like to be able to filter out "Rumour" but generally filtering by tag and keyword would be great 👍

-#Rumour -"complain" -"complaint" -"complainer" 😂✌️

EDIT - would I really though? I like to see the breadth of the discourse. I try not to even ignore ppl unless they just really aren't being intellectually honest or respectful. ✌️

Re: Poll: Three Months In, How Would You Rate Switch 2's Library So Far?

The_Nintendo_Expat

@electrolite77

"Yeah I’m going off the actual launches."

as a sort of historian/spectator, I can respect that, but the regional launch is a lot more relevant to my actual/personal experience, while the "actual" launch is more theoretical/academic.

I didn't realize the SNES had a weaker launch in EU! kinda silly since it was later, right? there must be a story there.

I don't care about graphics, only optimization and design. Nintendo could come out with a new 16 bit console, and as long as the games were fun and ran smoothly, I'd support the hell out of it.

(In fact id squeal with delight and do cartwheels but that's beside my point 😂✌️)

here's hoping for some cool things in store for switch 2! (and a price drop maybe? incidentally the concept of a budget friendly "consolized" switch 2 seems even more logical in the S2 era than it did before. at say 300 USD I'd definitely buy it.)

"SNES and N64 were great in terms of quality (Mario World, F-Zero, Mario 64, Pilotwings 64) but nobody would get away with launching with just two games now..."

in my country at least, the SNES launched with 5 games: SMW, F zero, Pilotwings, Gradius 3, and SimCity. This is the best launch lineup of Nintendo's history, and in the running for best ever (Dreamcast probably has it beat.)

other than that detail, I actually agree with you largely. I just happen to think A) that every other console was more interesting at a hardware level than Switch 2, which really helped the imagination to get excited about what was to come on that console, and B) that Switch 2 is a gigantic leap forward [I meant upward -ed.] in price compared to its predecessor, and 450.00 even in 2025 dollars (which are not really that much more available than <2020 dollars despite rising inflation) puts it into a "this better be something special" category, rather than a "well it's the new Nintendo, of course I'm buying it" kind of category.

OTOH if it had a new stellar mainline Mario game, a new Pilotwings game, a new f zero, a city builder developed and published by Nintendo, and (as long as we are being whimsical) an HD port of Gradius V, we all know that poll would be chock full of 9s and 10s. And, I'd have bought one day 1.

"I think there’s a lot of people failing to remember what most system launches are like"

almost every Nintendo launch has had at least one game that has been sufficiently exciting to justify purchase, hence I've bought (or asked for birthday/Xmas) almost every Nintendo system at launch since SNES until now.

I'm not saying they have all been incredible lineups but having lived through the SNES and Dreamcast launches for example I'm aware of how good it CAN be and I just can't unlearn it.

Re: Ubisoft Employee Explains Why Star Wars Outlaws Is A Game-Key Card

The_Nintendo_Expat

the "console games on a handheld" dream is dead, because what constitutes a "console like experience" is a moving target, a contemporary handheld (or "hybrid") will never catch up, and devs will never spend the money to make a separate "portable" version of their games again.

now, we have nightmares like GKKs as a fresh hell that I don't think any of us saw coming. and the worst of them (Ubisoft) is already making excuses why they "had to" go the high profit route (😢.) for you and me, the gamers. they had no choice.

can you imagine if MGS for GBC was a note for note recreation, running at 5fps, with GBCs resolution and color depth? of course they made a special new game for that console. and it was fantastic, and no one complained that it wasn't MGS for PSX.

Re: The Switch eShop And Steam Are Buckling Under The Weight Of Silksong

The_Nintendo_Expat

@IronMan30

"Why mention store fronts for other platforms on a Nintendo-centric site?"

because it is pertinent to the nature of the problem.

it'd be like the newspaper reporting that a house is on fire when the entire city is on fire. it's not "wrong" in the sense that a house is on fire, but it is "misleading" in the sense that the story is larger than that and there's a journalistic obligation not to mislead your audience.

OTOH there have been cases like heavy GTA 6 coverage on here where I commented that they went way beyond the scope of this site. ✌️ if the problem were ONLY with steam and not the eShop, and they were still reporting it here, I would completely agree with you.
