A good marketing tactic. I just want to see this game to see the appreciation it deserves, but if they have some form of sequel made I wouldn't be opposed to it, as unlikely as it is.
@JohnnyMind Thanks, as I wrote it out I kept thinking I would totally buy a game like that. If I ever go into game development I'll put that at the top of the pile. Coming out in 2XXX.
@Rykdrew I'm sure Reboot Camp will still be fun, my dude. There have been far more egregious games sold at full price. Whilst the online multiplayer offerings may be lacklustre, if it's anything like what the Wargroove online was like, aka barely anyone on the last dozen times I checked and people disconnecting when things go slightly against them, it really isn't too much of a loss.
I bought it today since I have a friend I could play locally with also there was a pre-order sale at my game store also I never played the originals but have been on a strategy game kick as of late so this is perfect for me. It is a serious shame they didn't make an online mode with a more robust matchmaking system when the game certainly has more viability than Fire Emblem in that regard.
@jojobar I'd argue that feeling comes from a lack of good texturing on the environment that makes everything come off as very flat. Terrains are big blocks of colour with a single degree of shading with cloud-like blobs representing the leaves of the trees and that weird copy-paste cobblestone appearance in the walls. It just lacks character and a few too many assets are copy pasted in a game this zoomed-out, which gives a very spacious and artificial appearance.
It sucks that I feel this way because I can tell a lot of hard work and effort went into this game. The animation on the tentacles and whatnot is lovingly hand-crafted with the principles of animation. And that one scene in the trailer with the moss-covered statue is actually great. Shadows dance across the ground, and the trees provide a natural coverage of the foreground that prevents it from feeling spacious as light streams down from above and the rippling water of the waterfalls gives the background life. It needed more scenes like that, in other areas, it's very simplistic without the bold style of games like Hyperlight Drifter or Eastward.
It could have done with more of the soft lighting seen in those games as well as others of this ilk like Blossom Tales in terms of light sources like fire or glow or reflected light. May have given the game more depth and drama in its visuals. Or maybe shadows need to be more prominent.
I don't know what it is but something about this game just seems whimsically derivative and I can't for the life of me pin down exactly why and it bothers me.
For a game called "Mangavania"... I really don't feel the manga influence. Just feels like a Japanese platformer in Commodore 64 style.
As @Ardisan said before, it would be cool if there were manga panels to move through similar to Comix Zone, but go even further with that. Splash pages, screen tones, action lines, interesting manga-styled character portraits, Japanese onomatopoeia filling the screens with strikes and jumps, flashy screen-clearing moves with special names like in Shonen manga, maybe have cutscenes in manga style similar to how Phantasy Star IV presented it's cutscenes, etc. They could also add some elements found commonly in manga like mecha or even slice-of-life. A hand-drawn artstyle would have also been more fitting but I'm not gonna dog on it for that but I will say the main character certainly doesn't reflect the style of most manga protagonists.
I'm sorry if it comes across as me judging the game for what it isn't rather than what it is, but the title just brought forth so many cool ideas like a 2D Madworld rather than what is being shown here.
@Friendly Yeah it doesn't pay to kick up a fuss too much but if their game is good enough to get such a reception 20 years later, I don't see why they wouldn't be annoyed, especially when other Nintendo remasters/remakes take the effort to credit original staff.
@Gerudo_Guy Well to be fair, the main reason the remaster can be acclaimed as a masterpiece is because of the individuals that built it from the ground up back on the Gamecube. Through the planning, concept design, pre-production, writing, modelling, texture-work, programming, etc. The remaster would not exist without the work of the original team and if they made a game that is so good that people want to play it 20 years later then those individuals should damn well be appreciated for such an achievement in some way, shape or form.
I would buy this game in an instant if they just announced Crossplay. Crossplay is the biggest barriers for fighting games after rollback finally caught on. Once they make that the standard I think fighting games on all systems will see an uptick in sales.
It’s funny how often videos referencing classic Megaman games are viewed in the tens of millions yet the actual series doesn’t sell nearly as well as its hold on video game culture would make you assume.
This looks good. It actually has a lot of the subtle animation gestures that give the characters life while playing them, which is what I find really brings down an experience when your character feels unnecessarily wooden, and that’s what I find in a lot of open-world clone games. The character design is also very good. I may have to keep an eye on this one.
@Mattock1987 Ngl that is a take I’ve never heard before. I believe that Journey was a fantastic piece of interactive media that was really worked with less whilst giving more. It didn’t need to add more to the experience and hence it removed all of the fluff that would have bogged it down.
That’s like saying Duck Hunt or F-Zero weren’t games because they were made primarily to feature a core part of the system’s hardware capabilities.
The gameplay looks solid but it also needs a character of it's own to stand out from the crowd because it's literally just one (albeit unexpected) reveal of a new F-Zero game to fall into redundancy. With over 30 pilots it could be possible but I hope they don't sacrifice quality for quantity.
Honestly whilst I love Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky, we can all agree that the story was one of the main aspects that carried those games into greatness. I just want that level of story telling in all Pokémon games if possible. It had likeable characters, funny gags, stakes that you believed in, some actually surprising twists and revelations, etc.
Oh yeah but if they do give us another a Mystery Dungeon, also give us back the neutral attack button from the older games that scaled with your level. Nothing felt better than coming back to a dungeon that gave you trouble way earlier and just decimate all the Pokémon without even trying.
@Joeynator3000 I remember watching an old news report on YouTube about Nintendo in the 1990s soon after the release of Super Mario Bros 3. They expected to see Miyamoto to be like a Western celebrity, living in glamour for making some one of the biggest names in the past decade. But what they found was a bunch of Japanese dudes just working in an office on the next game. No real fanfare, and when they asked why he didn’t break out on his own Miyamoto just said that Nintendo let him make games so he would keep on making them (alongside any trips needed for the team for research).
I wouldn’t be surprised if it was also the same for Sakurai.
Yeah I would actually put Gen 1 higher. For such a simple it really got the sense of adventure and I feel like it was the best at interweaving the main plot and the gym plot into one. Having the final gym be the leader of a Team Rocket was a good choice and having your rival end up being the champion is an underrated twist due to how well known it is. The only other game that really mixed it as well was Gen V which has the best story (but sacrifices map design and exploration in exchange).
Ngl with the sheer quantity of titles that have come out for the blue bomber I expected it to be way higher. Like this takes into account all the series and rereleases and it was overtaken by Animal Crossing: New Horizons alone?
WindWaker came at the perfect time. The 6th generation was when a lot of series got their “looks” more defined. What Zelda did essentially unshackled it from any expected art style since it was such a departure even from the N64’s low fidelity models. It’s makes it one of the most interesting series to look back on and compare entries. Even games like “A Link Between Worlds” has a fresh and interesting art style that’s different to other games in the series. It’s been a big reason that Zelda has managed to stay fresh for so long since there’s always something new to try out with the series from a visual and gameplay perspective.
All the cool stuff in BW2 makes me wish I wasn’t so turned off by BW1. This is mainly due to the fact that the map was linear, scaling on the sprite Pokemon when the camera moved looked bad to me, so many cool features weren’t included from Platinum/SoulSilver, and the starter Pokémon were the most lacklustre of any generation I had played up to that point.
I have replayed and gotten a lot of enjoyment out of BW (after tossing my starter for a Woobat) but I wish I got to play BW2 when it was new.
@Mauzuri I never thought I’d hear that in my life. Though I’d imagine they’d be more like Nintendo if they were actually still in the console race since quality exclusive titles and IPs is what has kept Nintendo afloat for over three decades now.
Honestly I feel like Sega is just more of an incompetent company than Nintendo, which leads to them making more mistakes regarding their games that are perceived as being out of touch. The thing is that Nintendo at least tends to frequently put out good titles despite being out of touch so they still keep a lot of fans. Sega has just piledrived their franchises repeatedly in the most botched way that I’m surprised they have anything left to their name.
The fact that there are still Sonic fans has probably more to do with the fan and furry community than anything Sega has done in the last ten years post-Generations (which was also rushed storywise and had the worst final boss that everyone seems to just forget about). With the only exception being the Sonic Boom TV show which they barely had a hand in.
To put it simply from my perspective: Mario can jump into a completely different type of game and make a landmark game in that genre (even creating new genres a la Mario Party). Meanwhile Sonic tries that and he faceplants spectacularly because it feels like no one is aiming to make a good game with him, they’re just trying to make something with Sonic so it will sell.
It looks like a fine game but they’ll have to content with a lot of other games that are vying for my attention. Even now I have a backlog of the Megaman Classic collection, Sonic Mania, Celeste, Kero Blaster, Freedom Planet, Yooka Laylee ATIL, Guacamelee, etc. I hope that this game has something spectacular that lets it stand out from the rest of the pack. The art is a good start though.
@daveMcFlave I know so many YouTube channels that try and make their own names for Metroidvanias like Plat-Tracker or Search Action and they just don’t fit as well.
Moemon already exists as a Pokémon Emerald mod and the quality of the sprites are surprisingly good, the context makes it weird though. There are also other games like that but generally you won’t see them on a conventional store page.
@Buizel Because unlike a lot of Pokémon clones, this one actually does something better than the mainline Pokémon games which is slick 2D pixel animation. Gen 5 was alright but the tweening of limbs and camera changes often turned the Pokémon into really jagged pixel messes at times. This game has buttery smooth animation that is obvious to see right out the gate. I’m definitely more interested in this than the most recent Pokémon games.
@Fairburne Yes but I wish that those three (I'd say four) classic games were properly preserved and available for others to play on modern hardware which Konami is not going to do.
Honestly Nintendo has always been very laid back with acquisitions. Not only did they let Rare go after they essentially helped carry the N64, but they also let Atlus go by when they were up for sale right before Persona 5 was released, which would have been a pretty keen grab. They don’t even own Retro Studios, Hal Laboratories, or Sora (Sakurai’s studio) which is not the norm when companies like EA and Activision hoover up game companies like breakfast.
@Shambo
Real shame Renegade Kid just made some of the most bizarre business decisions before splitting off. Not finishing Treasurenauts, remaking pretty mid-tier FPS’s from DS rather than D2 which probably would have benefitted the most, turning Moon into an episodic release, not releasing games in the EU until way later (which really turned me off when I was gonna buy their games on launch until I realised I couldn’t buy them), and green lighting some strange projects before finishing ones they already had. Amazing technical skill on Nintendo’s hardware, poor decision making after Mutant Mudds became a smash hit. Probably would have been better for them to continue with Treasurenauts and Cult County (their new FPS IP on 3DS) before they got the rights to their DS catalogue and latched onto that.
@Bolt_Strike [Spoiler] ((Man Hisuian Avalugg is gonna get even more messed up than regular Avalugg unless they make some major changes to his stats/abilities. A slow Pokemon with multiple 4x weaknesses is never optimal no matter the defense, isn't that right, Magcargo? Also man I wish they just gave Decidueye the Grass/Flying typing he should have gotten in Gen VII. When the only other usable non-legendary Pokemon in the category are Jumpluff and Tropius it's weird that they went with Grass/Ghost when Gen VI already gave us Pumpkaboo and Trevenant as well as adding Dhelmise in Gen VII on top of that.))
Everything else looks pretty cool. Also how do you hide text?
Me and Crash 4: It’s About Time. I have a Switch but I played it first on a friend’s PS4. The dip is certainly noticeable but really I find it such an enjoyable game to play I don’t see myself minding too often. Though some areas in handheld mode have resolutions that can take me out of the experience a bit.
@Nintendofan83 I think because Iga thought Symphony of the Night was the most popular and on PlayStation that those would be the sort of people who would want the game (console bound, most popular console at the time, hardcore audience, etc). Of course that’s completely ignoring the fact that Nintendo fans treat Castlevania with a lot of reverence since it was a classic NES series as well having the other 6 Metroidvanias on Nintendo handhelds. The fact they were surprised that the Switch version was the best selling version by far just shows how far off the pulse they were.
All this fuss because Kamiya didn’t want Nintendo to publish the game again, even though Nintendo fans were pretty much the only ones wanting it to get ported. I got the game and a kickass sleeve for it but I am disappointed in how the whole thing has been run. Where’s my keychain, Kamiya?
This seems like a lot of effort for a game that has aged pretty gracefully for the console generation it was made in. I’d have to wait and see how much this remaster upgrades the original, because honestly I would have been more than content to play through the original works by Retro Studios.
The only way I could see this being worthwhile is if Sega also released their Saturn, Dreamcast, or arcade catalogue to the Switch over time. There are so many games on there I’d love to play that paying the price would be a no brainer. But it’s just Sega Genesis games again, with the majority not really ageing well, or at least not as well as a lot of SNES games. But for now I’ll pass, I’d be interested to see if they added Gameboy the base service and GBA to the enhanced service.
No bulk crafting still annoys me. But I feel like there’s enough new stuff to get me to give the game another go after the first 70 hours I dropped into it last year.
@Anti-Matter I’m assuming English isn’t your first language. I’m not angry at you, I’m just asking you questions to get my point across. Although it can be hard to infer in text formats. Playing casually is perfectly fine but it just stings that it seems to be to the detriment of other player experiences. Which yes, are decisions by the developer, that’s what I’ve been saying. They’re bull-headed and heading only in one direction.
Like it or not, people are invested in this series, and each of them for different reasons. You play Pokémon for the story, which I never did, I played for the gameplay and overcoming challenges. Pokémon stories are not the big selling point for me, so GameFreak gutting out a lot of things except the story is not what I want.
I’m happy you can enjoy it, but I’m frustrated that I can’t for very easily remedied reasons. Although I don’t know why you brought up catching all the Pokémon, that task has been too time consuming and difficult since Gen 3 so we share common ground there.
If anyone wants to try a Pokémon game with some teeth, try out the Inclement Emerald ROMhack. It came out a month ago and not only increases the challenge and improve the AI of Pokémon battles, but also includes more Pokémon from almost every generation with some older Pokémon getting buffs like Dustox being able to have the Unaware ability among many stat changes. Plus there are multiple difficulties that change how important EVs are during the game. Patches are still coming out but it’s a good time.
@Anti-Matter friend, I think I don’t understand how YOU don’t understand why people are annoyed. Why is permanent EXP share a big deal? What do you lose in this game by allowing people to turn it off? Do you hate other people for wanting to play how they want? I’m assuming you don’t, but that’s how you sound.
Pokémon is a game series that allows a lot of player freedom in terms of how they construct their team. Similarly, it challenges people in various ways. One of the challenges in old games is team management, not only by looking into type coverage, but also making sure that everyone is of a decent level and ensuring that you don’t put all your experience points into one Pokémon. This has benefits of actually making people use different Pokémon and it gives at least some extra decision making to prevent the whole process from being mindless. You’re a casual gamer, so you don’t mind mowing down teams carefree, but others like training their Pokémon because that’s how “training” works in real life. You can’t train something by keeping it in a cage for the whole time. It gave more immersion if being a Pokémon TRAINER, because Pokémon is still a role-playing game.
I like to have my team setup as so. Every Pokémon is the same level but my starter is three levels ahead of everyone else. That’s how I’ve done it in every single Pokémon game I’ve played since I was 8 because it feels right to me, and if there is no reason why I’m denied doing things the way I like, then I’ll be annoyed.
Stop bringing up the “you’re a newbie casual gamer” we don’t care. Do you represent the ENTIRE Pokémon fan base? Why are you not seeing the downsides to not allowing people to have the opportunity to enjoy the games in a franchise they like? Similarly why can’t they make one-use TMs an option instead of a required feature, surely you’d prefer that as well? But Gamefreaks lack of customisation is bull-headed and just annoys everyone.
Speaking of shoots ‘em ups: anyone who still occasionally plays 3DS in the EU, pick up Chain Blaster on the EShop. It is on sale for super cheap and is a solid shootemup for any collection.
I might be keen to get this, if only to actually support the series that I’ve only played the DS games through second-hand copies. Hope the local and online multi-player will also be good, I feel this has way more potential to be an interesting online game than most are considering.
As for the box art, it’s different but definitely not bad. I feel like the new art style matches the playful energy the series gave off back in the early 2000’s. There was some grit to the original but the streamlined design of the new one is also very appealing to me and I understand why they’d want to play up the “model battle” aesthetic in a higher definition to keep it more family friendly.
@Tempestryke Well, they did take that one Megan vs Street Fighter fan game under their wing. It wasn’t the best but it shows Capcom isn’t adverse to the idea.

Re: Random: Somebody's Bought The Silent Hill Domain Just To Troll Konami
@Fairburne Yes but I wish that those three (I'd say four) classic games were properly preserved and available for others to play on modern hardware which Konami is not going to do.
Re: Nintendo Acquires SRD, A Longtime Partner Studio With Mario And Zelda Game Credits
Re: Nintendo Acquires SRD, A Longtime Partner Studio With Mario And Zelda Game Credits
@Giancarlothomaz I think Platinum has made a very strong stance that they don’t want to be limited to one console.
Re: Puzzle-Platformer Pompom Announced For Switch
@somebread At the very least the Switch can have the option of touch screen and pointer controls, making it more well suited than PS4 or XBOX.
Re: Underworld Dreams Brings Old School Psychological Horror To Switch Soon
@Shambo
Xeodrifter was good though.
Re: The Pokémon Company Is Sponsoring Sumo Wrestling Again
@Fizza Makuhita and Hariyama have always been my favourite Pokémon from Gen 3 so I agree.
Re: Pokémon Legends: Arceus Officially Reveals Hisuian Voltorb
Re: Talking Point: Great Game, Poor Performance - When Does A Bad Frame Rate Not Really Matter?
Me and Crash 4: It’s About Time. I have a Switch but I played it first on a friend’s PS4. The dip is certainly noticeable but really I find it such an enjoyable game to play I don’t see myself minding too often. Though some areas in handheld mode have resolutions that can take me out of the experience a bit.
Re: The Wonderful 101 Kickstarter Rewards Continue To Face Delays
@Nintendofan83 I think because Iga thought Symphony of the Night was the most popular and on PlayStation that those would be the sort of people who would want the game (console bound, most popular console at the time, hardcore audience, etc). Of course that’s completely ignoring the fact that Nintendo fans treat Castlevania with a lot of reverence since it was a classic NES series as well having the other 6 Metroidvanias on Nintendo handhelds. The fact they were surprised that the Switch version was the best selling version by far just shows how far off the pulse they were.
Re: The Wonderful 101 Kickstarter Rewards Continue To Face Delays
All this fuss because Kamiya didn’t want Nintendo to publish the game again, even though Nintendo fans were pretty much the only ones wanting it to get ported. I got the game and a kickass sleeve for it but I am disappointed in how the whole thing has been run. Where’s my keychain, Kamiya?
Re: Rumour: Metroid Prime Switch Remaster Is "Wrapped Up" According To Industry Insider
This seems like a lot of effort for a game that has aged pretty gracefully for the console generation it was made in. I’d have to wait and see how much this remaster upgrades the original, because honestly I would have been more than content to play through the original works by Retro Studios.
Re: Nintendo Leaker Suggests Pricing Of Switch Online's Expansion Pack Could Be Tied To "Licensing Costs"
Re: Animal Crossing: New Horizons' Version 2.0 Will Be The Game's Final Major Free Update
No bulk crafting still annoys me. But I feel like there’s enough new stuff to get me to give the game another go after the first 70 hours I dropped into it last year.
Re: Exp. Share Can't Be Turned Off In The Pokémon Diamond And Pearl Remakes
@haniwa Honestly, if you want a decent Pokémon experience there are some nice ROMhacks out there if you get that Pokémon itch.
Re: Exp. Share Can't Be Turned Off In The Pokémon Diamond And Pearl Remakes
Re: Exp. Share Can't Be Turned Off In The Pokémon Diamond And Pearl Remakes
Re: Exp. Share Can't Be Turned Off In The Pokémon Diamond And Pearl Remakes
Re: Capcom Says It's Unable To Add Cross-Save And Cross-Play To Monster Hunter Rise
Ouch, that’s gonna sting for the sales department since cross-save is the big reason people allow themselves to double dip.
Re: Four More Classic Shmups Confirmed For Switch, Including Konami's Cult Hit, Xexex
Speaking of shoots ‘em ups: anyone who still occasionally plays 3DS in the EU, pick up Chain Blaster on the EShop. It is on sale for super cheap and is a solid shootemup for any collection.
Re: Advance Wars' Switch Box Art Recreates The Original GBA Cover
I might be keen to get this, if only to actually support the series that I’ve only played the DS games through second-hand copies. Hope the local and online multi-player will also be good, I feel this has way more potential to be an interesting online game than most are considering.
As for the box art, it’s different but definitely not bad. I feel like the new art style matches the playful energy the series gave off back in the early 2000’s. There was some grit to the original but the streamlined design of the new one is also very appealing to me and I understand why they’d want to play up the “model battle” aesthetic in a higher definition to keep it more family friendly.
Re: Konami Competition Tasks Indie Devs With Reviving Its Classic IP
@Tempestryke Well, they did take that one Megan vs Street Fighter fan game under their wing. It wasn’t the best but it shows Capcom isn’t adverse to the idea.
