A couple of years ago, we were joking around because Pikmin 4 — the fourth mainline title in the Pikmin series — had been announced five years ago with not much else to go on. Fast-forward to today and, well, we're still waiting!
We're just having a little bit of fun here, but, strangely, the last thing we heard about Pikmin 4 was in an interview with Eurogamer in 2017. Yep, that's right! Pikmin creator Shigeru Miyamoto sat down with the good folks over at the site during E3 2017 (remember E3?), where he said to them "...I can tell you it is progressing."
Thanks to @NintendoMemo — who reshared a snippet of the article today in memory of its publication almost five years to the day later — we're now really sad that we're still waiting for a brand new Pikmin game.
So where are our cute little space plants? In the years since we've seen the release of Hey! Pikmin on the 3DS in 2017 and Pikmin Bloom, Niantic's mobile game. If either of these are meant to be Pikmin 4, then we'd love to know! But we would really love a new Pikmin game to play on the Switch.
We came up with a list of theories as to what could've happened to Pikmin 4 back in 2020. Some of these are out-of-date, of course, and
And, well, we suppose we did get Pikmin 3 Deluxe back in 2020 — and that was fabulous — but it only makes us want more from Olimar and friends. All we want to know is what's happening with Pikmin — should we abandon hope of a fourth numbered title?
Perhaps there's just a shred of hope here (or maybe we're expecting way too much) but maybe that rumoured Nintendo Direct at the end of the month can shed some light on the whereabouts of Pikmin and co.? We know we said it's unlikely in our list below, but 3/10 means there's at least a sliver of hope!
Whatever has happened to Pikmin 4, it's okay really. If Nintendo is still working on a true numbered sequel, then it can take its time. If not, then we'd be disappointed, but at least we'd know where we stand.
Otherwise, happy fifth anniversary to Pikmin 4 "progressing", even if Miyamoto technically wasn't meant to say anything. Perhaps next time we write about this game it'll be better news.

Pikmin 4 isn't real. Pikmin 4 can't hurt us.
Nintendo has it's tales. Remember the super confirmed switch pro?
Good things come to those who wait!
And it's been almost 10 years since we heard anything about a new DK or Kid Icarus game. That is the huge issue I have with Nintendo. They make great consoles and great games, but man, so many IPs have to collect dust just in favour of another Mario or Fire Emblem game.
I’ve given up. Great series and I replay every year.

Edit.
I also have 1 and 2 on Wii u virtual console and 3 on switch again.
Guess at least it gave me time to give 3 another shot and end up becoming a fan of it this time.
Honestly what else is new? If it isn't Mario or Zelda, Nintendo will usually abandon a series within three games. 🤷
Look if it’s not Zelda or Mario Nintendo ain’t making it!
@1UP_MARIO I have 1, 2, & 3 on Wii U. All great games! 😉
It suffered embarrassment on Wii U, getting thrown in with Mario Kart for a time. It’s my most anticipated Nintendo game, but my heart is ready when Nintendo’s is
Tbh I never really took it seriously. Pikmin 3 was still only like 2 years old at that point. With Wii U tanking bad, was kinda clear that all resources would go to getting the next console out asap
Who need Pikmin 4 if there is Tinykin by indie developer on PS4 / PS5 ?
It's been so long, even Octane has given up on new Pikmin<3 XD
(Hadn't seen Octane on here in a while. So, I'm made that up, for fun.)
It's like Metroid Prime 4, this is a game that will come.........eventually.
@TowaHerschel7
Looks like Splatoon 3 and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 are going to be the last Splatoon and Xenoblade games ever 🤣
I could have sworn it was said to be almost done, and that was 5 years ago, makes me wonder what happened, they must have decided to completely start from scratch in order for us to not have heard anything by now.
It's disappointing, would be really cool to be able to play a brand new Pikmin game on Switch, love that series, I do hope the continue the simultaneous co-op aspect of Pikmin 3 as an option though, that just makes sense when there are multiple player characters.
@TowaHerschel7 all great games and very replayable
Has anyone in the press actually asked about this recently or did they all just move on? Because I see no harm in at least asking Nintendo what happened. It's a very strange situation that they said it was "almost done" and then... nothing for 5 years. And unlike with Prime 4 where they were up front that development had to be restarted, they weren't as upfront about what went wrong with Pikmin. I feel like Nintendo at least owes Pikmin fans an update on this and at least letting people know if it's cancelled or if it's still planned.
I always thought that Hey Pikmin! was meant to be Pikmin 4.
Phone emojis look like distorted faces on a PC lol
Meh. Doesn't bother me since I'm not a fan of the series.
We likely won’t hear much until the mario movie is out.
Didn't they just come out with a massive Pikmin mobile thing? The franchise is hardly dormant.
He must have been talking about Hey! Pikmin at the time which basically is Pikmin 4 in the timeline.
We waited 9 years for Pikmin 3 which felt like an eternity and now here we are again at 9 years, except this time with no info at all
Same thing happened with Pikmin 3. Rumblings for years before it finally materialized. We'll probably see Pikmin 4 near the launch of the next Nintendo system.
Pikmin fans that are giving up already are weaklings I've waited what nearly 20 years for F-Zero you got what a game for Wii U a 3DS spinoff and a Deluxe port on the Switch at leapt you know ur getting something eventually Kid Icarus fans and also F-Zero fans have to just wait and hope they get something geese talk about wanting.
Wait they're making a pikimin 4? I thought that was just a rumor like silent hill getting a new game.
Please understand
I'm not invested in Pikmin as others are. But I'll just go under the assumption it's long been done and they'll release it for whatever console when they have an opening. I wouldn't be that surprised if it's in the Switch's batch of last hurrah games
I waited 9 years for Pikmin 3. I've resigned to the fact that Pikmin is a once in a decade release, if we're lucky.
You just have to understand, Pikmin is so low on the priority list for Nintendo, that if Miyamoto isn't actively pushing for it, it's probably not getting made. And Miyamoto is most likely preoccupied with theme parks and movies, so it may still be years and years before we see another Pikmin, or 3 may have been the last one for all we know.
@RareFan If you said that 15 years ago FE fans would be turning heads.
Basically some journalist misinterpreted something Miyamoto said and loads of others ran with the story. It was obvious he was referring to Pikmin Bloom or the 3DS game.
Bad journalism, Chinese whispers, wishful thinking or simply someone massaging a story to suit their own narrative and agenda.
This is the world we live in, only last week you would’ve bet your house on Goldeneye being revealed due to the pure number of articles and YouTube videos about it. It simply doesn’t exist yet people insist on chasing these pots of gold at the end of the proverbial rainbow.
I don't believe Nintendo ever were working on Pikmin 4
Miyamoto is the stereotypical artist who will tinker with things endlessly or shelve something out of a lack of inspiration, taking his sweet time until he feels he has achieved exactly what he wants. And this is the kind of title for which Nintendo will enable that behavior. When he's done it will be released.
@westman98 The saddest part of all is, it's likely to be true for at least one of the two series if not both. 😂
@1UP_MARIO Agreed! They are short, but ingeniously designed to have near-endless replayability. 😉
Well if it was developed on the Wii U! It could mean it has to be redeveloped without the Wii U in mind or it was scratched due to the Wii U in mind?
It seems fair to say that what development had happened had been restarted and they didn't seem an announcement of that fact was necessary as no official announcement of the game had even been made in the first place.
You'll get your Pikmin 4 eventually, I'm sure.
Pikimin 4 is a collective delirum just like Metroid Prime 4.
Before I die, I'd love to get a peek into the Nintendo vault.
Little kings story somewhat scratches the piking itch
Honestly, the port of Pikmin 3 kinda satisfied my desire for a Pikmin game on Switch--at least for the time being. In terms of games that don't have an original entry on Switch yet, I'm much more interested in seeing a new Donkey Kong game.
Pssst...

Pikmin 4.
Let’s be honest… there was never a Pikmin 4. It was just a mistranslation for the release of Hey Pikmin!
@TowaHerschel7 no way is Splatoon going dormant after the release of 3, it's just too big of a series already. Last I heard Splatoon 2 had sold over 13 million copies, Nintendo would be fools to drop the franchise unless something awful happened and 3 was to completely bomb.
Xenoblade is another story, however. I don't believe Monolith will drop the series but it's always at risk given how niche it is compared to most Nintendo properties.
I have been swearing that since the announcement of Hey! Pikmin that he was talking about that, not Pikmin 4. I remember him saying "it is almost finished" and then lo and behold, they announce a spinoff not long after. Don't hold your breaths until the next console cycle.
Atlas also mentioned that Etrian Odyssey would return after Nexus for the switch and nothing has been mentioned since as well. Which is rude I might add. Hahaha. I can't wait for a new game. ♡
Wouldn’t that have technically been hey pikmin?
Moral of the story is always listen to your PR team...!!
HEY! pikmin is pikmin4. You can't prove it wrong.
@Mathieu_B Nope, Miyamoto confirmed that was not Pikmin 4 awhile ago.
@kepsux Nope, Miyamoto confirmed that was not Pikmin 4 awhile ago.
@blindsquarel Nope, Miyamoto confirmed that was not Pikmin 4 awhile ago.
@8BitHero_ miyamoto also said pikmin4 was nearly ready for release and here we are. clearly he's not a source to be trusted.
Would be great if we saw something of it soon, if it exists. I loved 3, it truly is one of the most unique franchises out there.
I love the 'Pikmin' series, but at this point I feel like Nintendo have squandered the brand with its sporadic releases. It started on Gamecube with the original game in 2001/02 basically in the consoles "launch window" across the various regions, then we got 'Pikmin 2' in 2004.
But after that there has been a lot of promises, over many years, with very few games to show. It started during the Wii, repeated promises of 'Pikmin 3' coming to Wii (it only got ports of 1&2) but #3 eventually skipped the system & turned up on WiiU in 2013, ie. 9 years after the 2nd game...
Then the 'Pikmin 4' question, where is it? After the WiiU launch of #3, we were back to the familiar pattern of "its being worked on", but here we are again 9 years after 'Pikmin 3' and we are still completely in the dark over a possible 4th game.
We had 'Hey! Pikmin' in 2017 on the 3DS, which was decent bit very different gameplay-wise, but even that was released a 1/2 decade ago. And hey why not re-release 'Pikmin 3' on Switch, but don't bundle 1&2 together, that would make too much sense Nintendo.
With the recent 2021 release of the augmented reality phone game 'Pikmin Bloom', maybe that could increase interest. But unfortunately at this point, I doubt it.
@WoomyNNYes Wrong!
@8BitHero_
He has said a lot of things regarding pikmin 4. None of which are true.
@Mathieu_B that's what I thought too. Never understood why everyone was expending another one.
@RareFan They don't ignore Pikmin in favor of Fire Emblem, FE and Pikmin are by two completely different studios. The reason we haven't seen Pikmin or other dormant IPs is because the teams associated with them don't want to work on them, not because Nintendo had to choose between Donkey Kong or Pokemon.
@abbyhitter then why are you here?
Does anyone know how popular the mobile game Pikmin bloom has been? Heres hoping it’s kept the series alive in the eyes of Ninty and they have something in the pipeline.
This was really a really depressing read.
@Degenerate_Mii Yes and the Wii U was in this case superior.
But to be honest this was just possibility. It is Nintendo right?
@DaveSimonH Hey! Pikmin is a game that would work very well on the Switch!
Okay, now I really want them to talk about this. Pikmin is a very unique franchise, there's a lot of potential for the fourth entry. The more NIntendo ips on Switch the better right?
Such a shame, my all time favourite Switch game.
