It was way back in the more innocent times of late 2019 that we wrote about Underworld Dreams, a Lovecraftian psychological horror game coming to Switch. Developer Drop of Pixel had initial plans to release in 2020, but instead the project has had an extended development and picked up a publisher with Skystone Games in early 2021.
It's still console exclusive to Switch, and will now also be coming to PC when it arrives 'later this Spring'. As you can see in the extended trailer above (from last year) it's retained its old school look and first-person perspective. Below is some of the official description, which still emphasizes that it's been built for Switch; in other words, it should run well on the system:
Built from the ground up for the Nintendo Switch™, Underworld Dreams draws upon the roots of the horror gaming genre. Prepare to dig into the mysteries of the occult and solve puzzles while constantly looking over your shoulder. Ancient forces are at work in this abandoned church, and only you can unlock the secrets of what doom is to come. Ammo and health are limited, there’s no telling what enemies you’ll face.
Key Features
- Solve puzzles to discover the fate of your brother, the dark designs of a cursed relic, and fight ancient and forbidden horrors. Your sanity will be tested as you untwist the riddles of an evil older than humanity itself.
- Every bullet counts as you must measure resources against the haunting doom.
- Old school terror is built around an immersive and fully detailed environment. The False King brings in a dark narrative mixing psychological and cosmic horror.
- Explore the world of psychological horror created by H.P. Lovecraft and based on "The King in Yellow" by Robert W. Chambers.
We like the look of it and will keep an eye out for further details - let us know what you think in the comments.

It looks just like I game for me but only eShop ... damn!
Give me physical and I would buy it!
@Zuljaras you know how it is man. will release digital only and within 6 months to a year someone will announce a limited physical edition with standard and collector edition variants.
@smithyo You know the Physical release companies all too well
That's just your typical horror slow walking simulator that we've known for ages...
I love horror and FPS so a good review should do it for me.
Looks better than RE7 (or Village). I like the music and atmosphere too. So far so good as they say, but I'll wait for reviews.
Looks like Dementium
@smithyo at insane prices, ridiculous shipping fees, and the risk of import tax, while the digital version is 80% off. I was always for physical releases, and still compare prices and often prefer physical despite the extra cost (or at a lower price, which is also often the case with regular releases, even not strictly limited low prints), it's not worth such a spike in price to me. But it does often make me hold off from buying games, hoping for a physical or deep sale. So they also kind of shot themselves in the foot. I used to spend loads on collecting games, not anymore. At the current insane prices, I'm even considering selling my Cubivore copy, among others. Just the return on investment could pay for repairs on my camper, or the way I live, food for me and the dogs for months. Mad world.
@jufonuk Still waiting for the remake of 2 on 3DS... Both games were great, the second was a massive improvement overall, the remake of 1 got me all excited for the promised remake of 2... Which we never got
Looks promising. I'm getting strong Eternal Darkness vibes.
@shgamer on what planet does that look better than RE7 or Village?!?!?
@Deanster101 Maybe I should have beenmore precise; it looks more the classic REs (especially the Remake of the first) than 7 and Village. It's great artwork IMO and they nail the atmosphere with the right type of music and good sound effects too.
How well it plays combat wise; how good the story is IDK, but so far so good IMO.
@Deanster101 Because people love to hate on FPS Resident Evil for no real reason other than its not like RE1 or RE4.
These kind of games always make me wonder why Eternal Darkness never got a sequel/remaster, that game was brilliant with its sanity meter and way to make you think the game was glitched.
@JeanPaul Because Nintendo own the IP and insanity game mechanic copyright.
@JeanPaul Doki Doki Literature Club is the only other game ive seen that manages to pull off glitch horror well.
Nice!! Adding this to the same wishlist as “Forgotten Memories” which is also looking pretty good and also supposed to be releasing on Switch at some point.
I’m digging the FP style!
It’s reminding me out Outlast but with weapons which sounds refreshing to me.
Guys, when someone says a game looks better than another one...they aren't always talking about the graphics.
@GrailUK Graphics, artwork, art direction, call it what you want, the graphics seemed more appealing to me than especially RE7 with its dead crows on the doors and whatever (distasteful if you ask me).
It has something to do with how the paintings hanging on the walls, the textures on the doors, the walls, you name it, all look.
And besides this was as far as I can see high resolution textures, so much that I fear the Switch version won't look as good (or at least run as well) as the PC version.
Personally I'm fine with 720p because I "only" have a Switch Lite (Will I buy the game? Don't know yet, but I think this trailer is a pretty good start at least if the developers/publisher wants to convince me to do so).
Ok, now Nintendolife has changed the much worse looking announcement trailer, only lasting 31 seconds, while the new trailer around 3 minutes.
Why on earth they would do that is beyond me? They state in the article they like the look of the game. Something truly horrific are going on not only on Nintendolife, but all over the world.
But.. fright not if you have a clean concience.. If not though, to bad for you, I trust enough in the Lord to believe that.
(now we'll see if this post will be removed or I will banned from this site - don't care to honest - things will happen anyway I believe, Amen - ok this last one was a bit of a "funny bone", but who cares - the Lord will forgive I'm sure ).
@ChromaticDracula honestly, at this moment, I really think Forgotten Memories will not release on the Switch. Seems to me it has been years since it was announced for it, and still nothing. And, it's not like they have to remake the all game, since it runs pretty well on Android.
@Shambo
Real shame Renegade Kid just made some of the most bizarre business decisions before splitting off. Not finishing Treasurenauts, remaking pretty mid-tier FPS’s from DS rather than D2 which probably would have benefitted the most, turning Moon into an episodic release, not releasing games in the EU until way later (which really turned me off when I was gonna buy their games on launch until I realised I couldn’t buy them), and green lighting some strange projects before finishing ones they already had. Amazing technical skill on Nintendo’s hardware, poor decision making after Mutant Mudds became a smash hit. Probably would have been better for them to continue with Treasurenauts and Cult County (their new FPS IP on 3DS) before they got the rights to their DS catalogue and latched onto that.
Xeodrifter was good though.
@CarlosM87 noooooo don’t tell me that! Honestly it’s been radio silence with them I know… I’m trying to keep my expectations low but that game looks really good.
Hope it releases eventually!
The translation needs work, at the moment it's the most horrifying thing about the game.
@ChromaticDracula I'm not sure, but it does seem weird to me, you know? If you check their Facebook page, it looks like they have been working on light and face animations for ages, and with that, some years. After the PSvita version debacle I wouldn't put my trust on the company that much. I bought the Android version and the game is indeed good, although nothing new on the genre, and with some questionable design and gameplay choices of their part. Hopefully they improve the battle system, saves, and the enemy designs, which are, in my opinion, what needs the most improvements.
@ChromaticDracula and, with that, the Switch now has a very respectable horror games list, if you want to check. Games like Mundaum, Maid of Sker, Silver Chains, RE:Revelations 2, Outlast 1 and 2, and The Wine, are all worth checking if you're into Horror. Not much of a Silent Hill vibe in those, but still pretty good. Unfortunately, most Horror games on the Switch are always "Coming Soon". That's the date for most Switch games, for some reason.
@Supaguy Yeah I remember looking forward to Cult County, it held a lot of promise to a Dementium fan as myself. Moon was ok on DS, but I honestly can't even remember if they released it here in Europe on 3DS. I wanted Dementium 2 remade, and was hoping that would lead to a third game. But indeed, weird stuff happened, cancellations, shift in focus from creepy atmospheric technical showpieces on weaker hardware to very old school "git gud" games... Oh well. Even the DS releases were very hard to find in Europe. Dementium and Moon, I saw them in a store ONCE, a single copy, and those are the ones I bought. Dementium 2 I didn't even know had a European release until way after I imported a US copy. Even when looking that up there was no word of a European release on the very same internet.
How fitting that I have the song One Day by Matisyahu stuck in my head now (although his hopes are not for Dementium 3 one day, but for people to say they will no longer fight the wars, which is an understandable priority, but both can exist in the same timeline...)
@CarlosM87 Reminds me to go back to Maid of Sker! There's a ton of other great ones as well, I'd add Little Nightmares (both) and Yomawari (both), and a definite "keep an eye out for" Tormented Souls, next month if it doesn't get delayed or turn out a bad port... Some others worth a mention: Dying Light, Metro (both), World War Z, Carrion,...
So many different genres within the horror genre.
So little Eternal Darkness
@Shambo you're absolutely right. I actually own most of the horror games on Switch, since that was the main reason for me to buy it. Maid of Sker I stopped halfway as well, for some reason, but still a good game. Tormented Souls I think it will get delayed, but hopefully not. XD Still waiting for Silent Hill on Switch. XD Not happening, but hey, one can dream. 😂
@willi3su Oh that game is good too, Played that one on my computer, totally unexpected game.
@CarlosM87 there are some notable horror tiles for sure…
Curious, have you tried Murder House yet? That’s on my wishlist and looks creepy as hell
@ChromaticDracula it's been on my wishlist since it came out, but I read somewhere that it's quite short, so I might wait for a sale. It does seems creepy, and reminds me a lot of Silent Hill.
