Re: Nintendo Focusing On Switch Install Base To Combat Next-Gen Performance Gap

Steevil

I think that developing to the strengths of the system (like Breath of the wild) is a different thing to porting something made for a different system to the switch.

With the former, devs can make the design and the style work on the hardware...with the latter, you’re always talking about the compromises necessary.

We just need some more games built from the ground up for the Switch.

Re: 3DClouds Responds To Criticism Of The Switch Version Of Xenon Racer

Steevil

I hope this will be a but of a lesson for all dev teams porting to the switch.

Personally, I'd prefer a racing game that skimped on the flashy details and focused on the framerate and general performance...framerate and smooth gameplay is too important for a racer.

Xenon reeks of a game that was made for more powerful platforms and clumsily ported rather than built with the Switch in mind...it's the only reason I can think that it can look so much worse than Fast RMX (or even GameCube F-Zero!) and yet still run this poorly.

I'd really like to see some racers developed from the ground up just for the Switch.

Re: Intense Shmup-Platformer Velocity 2X Is Getting A Limited Physical Release On Switch

I support LRG now they've moved to a pre-order model for switch games and you know you can get a copy if you want one.

I did try to collect their vita stuff though and lost out so many times to games selling out while you even got the "buy" option on your screen...only to appear on Ebay seconds later for a small fortune. I vowed never again.

Sad another company has popped up feeding the eBay scalper beast.

Re: Talking Point: How Do You Feel About The Metroid Prime 4 Delay?

Steevil

@Hoho

Re-releases is not a Switch only issue....this from someone who has just bought Castlevania Symphony of the Night for the 5th time and console, and Skyrim for seemingly the bazillionth (VR Skyrim!)

Overall I'm really happy with the mix of new releases and ports on the Switch, I think that it has a really healthy library.

Re: Feature: Vote For Your 2018 Nintendo Game Of The Year

Steevil

Dead Cells is the game I had the most fun with this year.

Surprisingly, Starlink is right up there too. I loved that game way more than I thought I would.

Also surprisingly, I haaaaaaaaaate Celeste! I wish I could love it like everyone else does, but it is just a hateful, joyless grind (its not the difficulty...I've completed Super Meat Boy...it's just missing that spark for me that makes it worth persevering).

Re: Review: Starlink: Battle For Atlas - A Shining Example Of Open World Star Fox Done Right

Steevil

I was a bit on the fence with this one, but am totally sucked in now, it's great!

I play mostly in handhld mode and find the game smooth and enjoyable. In fact it's technically very impressive, particularly transitioning from a planet to space and vice versa. The open world feel to it is really impressive.

I'm totally happy with this as a filler until a true Starfox game comes out, and I do hope that Starfox takes some of the elements of this, like the open world mechanic.

Re: Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle Is Receiving Four Different Retail Options In Japan

Steevil

I'm still sceptical of the fully digital future, but I'm not normally suckered into special editions.

Capcom beat em ups hold a special place in my heart though...and I've loved them ever since nagging my mum for 20p for just one go if we ever saw an arcade machine. I recently bought myself an arcade machine (...sold a kidney...) just so I could recapture that feeling, the only games I play are the capcom games.

As much as Capcom doesn't seem to care about their UK fans, I just can't pass up the special edition in this case...some of these games I lusted after in my youth. The collectors edition is already appearing on eBAY for more than £200.

Sigh.

Re: Head Of Abstraction Games Addresses Technical Performance Of The Switch

Steevil

No surprises here. Their plan re optimisation sounds like a good one, but this is one option.

What about changing the graphical style of games, such as keeping the fundamental game but introducing cell shaded graphics to reduce the strain on the Switch etc. There are artistic choices that could be made too, rather than just tinkering at the edges.

It’s more work sure, and risks annoying the hardcore fans, but I wish some developers would be a bit more bold in addressing the Switch’s limitations relative to PS4/Xbox One

Re: DOOM Eternal On Switch Will Target 30fps

Steevil

I really enjoyed Doom on my PC, silky smooth 4k carnage was awesome.

However, I played Doom more on my Switch on the go, it got me through many a bored train or plane trip, and the drop to 30fps was noticeable, but quickly forgotten. I can't wait for the sequel!
