Full-fat FPS games like DOOM work wonderfully on PC using the Steam Controller's gyro by itself or combined with a trackpad (left or right, you pick). I'd even say it works better than in Splatoon because I can set the sensitivity to whatever I want (Splatoon 2's highest is still a bit too low) and my aim doesn't get thrown off by that lousy camera or my own squidkid blocking my view of enemies when they're in my sights where they belong.
There's no reason for console shooters in this post-Splat world to avoid gyro control, and if Metroid fails to use it without a good reason, it belongs in the insta-nope pile with so many PS4 games.
This 7 looks like "Well we're not really qualified to judge this game because of what it sets out to do, but it SEEMS pretty good for what it is!" If they were actually part of the target audience, then they would have been able to more accurately describe why it would deserve a rating higher than a 7...or go deep enough to find glaring flaws that might send it down to 6-land.
While Sony and Microsoft go for the 4K living room TV, I'd hope Nintendo could do the same---but with the added option of taking that same hardware to the 'home office' for some 144fps goodness.
I don't understand the debate. It's a portable console. A console that is portable. It certainly 'feels' like a portable, even though I always use it docked like a console. It is whatever you want it to be. Or maybe, it is both. The user data shows that it's both, at least.
I like the idea, and if I liked Zelda more I'd be all over that thematically-appropriate Sheikah one. I'll just hold out for a Splatoon one, or maybe just a non-game-specific one with RGB.
This would have been excellent if it had released BEFORE I'd gotten into other digital card games and a slosher-load of other big-screen games! Oops. Well, I made my dollar vote anyway because I'm a fan, so it'll be there if I feel like squinting at these dinky cards before a Switch iteration is made.
Caught one of these day one. Only tried it for a few minutes on several Neo Geo games, but that D-pad's a huge leap forward from last month's HORIPAD. Even though it does nothing to let me know I'm changing directions, I'm always going where I want and only die because I screw up.
I gyro-aim on PC and it is glorious. Sad to see it being excluded here, given that Nintendo put gyro aiming on the map.
@Turbo857 DKCR's Wiimote control may have needed "gimmicky waggle" to cram all the controls in---and that's fine for people who didn't want to buy another controller--- but being a separately-sold accessory isn't even a good excuse to not support the Classic Controller and its abundance of proper buttons.
That's hilariously bad. If I gave a damn about the genre, I'd already be passing on the game due to the broken audio, especially if I were playing on a PC or PS4 where I'd think something was wrong with my system or the disc and be in for quite a scare. Either that or it'd be something to laugh at while enjoying the gameplay (if it's solid enough). Not sure which.
Hm, sounds like this game needs a proper endless mode in the spirit of those early arcade games to justify those 'unfair' deaths. Still interested though.
I'd given up hope for PSO2 localization what feels like a decade ago. If they actually do it this time, I'm game to give it a go, maybe even throw a few bucks their way before even starting.
While achievements don't really take anything away (except maybe some dignity), they can add a player base that plays shovelware to inflate gamerscores, poorly-implemented achievements such as the participation awards for completing the tutorial, complete BS RNG-based cheevos and stuff that won't be possible after online service ends, and potentially invading the overall experience depending on what may still be present even after disabling intrusive notifications and whatnot.
It's like cigarettes. We don't have to smoke them, but we'll end up choking on their fumes regardless, possibly be sweeping their butts off the ground, and having to request being seated in no-smoking sections, to eat burgers with nasty pickle juice on the buns and cake that might have bits of sprinkles on the side. Tolerable, but shameful.
If it weren't for PC gaming (on a mere GTX 760 but still going strong at 60fps minimum), I'd just be spending way more time on the few Switch games I have, and maybe even buying a few more. Yeah, I'm happy with Switch despite its lack of a proper D-pad and BORING home menu.
(By the way, whose idea was it for the menu's game titles to have "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the" when there's still more than enough room on the screen for "Wild"?)
Heavy Splatling's kit is at least slightly better now. Actually got a few krills from the formerly-useless Stingray, and many more times I've actually been threatened by other players using that special. Still hesitant to actively use the Sprinkler though despite its reduction in ink consumption; still too much needing to stop and reload after tossing one out.
Good to see options like this in games other than Smash. ...but having this as a standard is many generations overdue. Few (if any) games have an excuse to not do this. Mario Kart next please, so I can cram everything onto one side of the controller and drink with the free hand!
Skipped Sunshine back in the day, but tried to play it shortly after finishing Galaxy 2. Big mistake. Got bored after only getting a few Shines simply because my thirst for Power Stars was sated. I don't even remember whether it had camera issues! (Being a GameCube era game, I'd bet on it.) Haven't had the time to give it a fair go though, and Odyssey sure aint helping.
But, yeah. Was able to enjoy Mario 64 (yay freshness back then, and yay nostalgia later!), but Lakitu Cam and everything like it is a legit barrier to enjoyment. Camera should be submissive like MonHun or D Souls or BotW, not trying to wrestle control from the player like Mario and Zelda 64.
Galaxy? From what I remember, it felt like rather than develop a good camera, they designed levels around just having the camera plopped someplace where I wouldn't have any need to control it anyway. It worked for me back then, as I usually prefer having no control over bad control.
It's a good start. But, this being a Musou game, I'd also have to worry about draw distance, number of visible enemies (PS2 Musous would have many nearby enemies fading in and out of view, not sure if newer ones do this), and whether the frame rate stays consistent (especially at 60). And most importantly, whether the enemies actually bother to fight back.
Just gave it a few minutes in Metal Slug and Blazing Star. Been making way too many inadvertent diagonal movements. It's actually more difficult to go in a cardinal direction than it was on the Pro Controller. Even the Switch menu itself was difficult. This is nowhere near their last-generation Fight Pads, let alone Sega's Genesis and Saturn pads.
Golden or merely silver, it's the best it's been since the 16-bit golden age, and looks especially brighter as the dark age that was the 7th Console Generation remains but a blurred memory.
The PC offers some really nice 'current' games along with a gamut of spiritual successors that make it hard to pine for the old days or even keep up with what's new.
If I were a Nintendo-only gamer, though, I'd actually have more time to enjoy the Switch's great selection, still have no shortage of games, and still not give too many craps about western AAA third-party games. (though I'd want Overwatch and Quake on Switch, but yeah.)
@AskAnEnemy Welp, guess I won't be seeing this at any events then. ...any chance it could be demo'd via the eShop? After rereading the game description, I'm wanting to try it more.
Already an arcade stick for Switch and PC? Nice...though I'm curious about the claim that it "works on Steam". Does that mean the Steam Controller software works with it the same way it does with a DualShock 4, or is it just that it works like any ol' PC pad therefore works on games in Steam?
Being able to search by Alphabetical would be nice, as would searching by genre. I can browse the complete list by starting a Search without any filters, but it feels quite messy. At least I'm not having to sift through tons of pointless categories like on the 3DS eShop.
I just hope the gyro lag from the Splatfest and Testfire won't pop up here. Got used to it quickly, but it could cause trouble with more skilled opponents and more accurate weapons.
Count me as another who's struggled to punish an enemy Mercy under the cover of light.
But lack of buttons? That didn't stop games from being made for Genesis instead of (or as well as) SNES. And these days, compared to the Steam Controller, nothing on consoles has enough buttons. At least the Switch has a known gyro.
Castlevania's a stupid fun game series about strutting to a castle, whipping old horror cliches in the face and getting knocked off stairs by floating medusa-heads, so I'm not exactly disappointed at the amount of stupid fun there was to be had in this animated series. Excellent throwback to the best two Castlevanias of their eras.
"X-COM like gameplay" Oh goody, I get to be pedantic. There's X-Com the classic game and there's XCOM the reboot, but there's no X-COM. Any other games where hyphens and caps actually matter?
Seriously looking forward to Star Fox despite having an idea how poorly it's aged. Skipped SNES almost entirely back in the day, only played a small fraction of the first-party games on VC, and lost interest in buying the real system and carts. This'll be a treat for me, if I can find one...
I just imagined a third-person game filled with claustrophobic, narrow corridors and such. Couldn't see my targets though Samus's damn bulky armor. And when Samus's back was to a wall? Oh yeah, lots of needing to fight the camera there too. On the bright side, the Morph Ball transitions felt much more natural.
