Monster Hunter Stories is out now, and some of you may be wondering if it's worth your time. We've got somebody beavering away at the full review as we speak, but in the meantime our video expert Alex Olney has spent a little time with it - and he's come away pleasantly surprised at how it serves as a more gentle tutorial to the core franchise.
Monster Hunter, as you may be aware, is quite a demanding beast and newcomers may well find the more recent 3DS entries to be rather intimidating. In that regard, Monster Hunter Stories is ideal; it gives you the basic building blocks of the franchise but doesn't drop you in the deep end immediately.
Check out the video and let us know your thoughts; will you be picking this up even if you're a seasoned veteran of Capcom's series, or are you entirely new to the franchise and therefore consider this to be a good entry point? Post a comment to tell us, and the world!

This is the only Monster Hunter game I'm Interested in.
Ride and befriend the monsties to better learn how to carve them up in the series proper? O.o
They should give proper in depth tutorials in the main series. I love the games but I can see how it could put people off at the start.
@PtM You may have a point, hopefully not though.
@PtM Beat me to it. Somehow I don't think Capcom is looking at the Switch as anything more than a lazy port machine going forward.
Seasoned vet here. And yes, my copy arrived yesterday. Unfortunately it arrived damaged so now I'm dropping off at UPS today for a return while my new order comes through.
Game really looks excellent. This and Metroid are the only reason my 3DS hasn't retired completely. Well, that's not true. There's Radiant Historia and Culdcept Revolt and Etrian Odyssey V and SMT Strange Journey... but I doubt I'll have time for those anymore. Still pick em up for posterity's sake.
I'm playing Monster Hunter XX right now on Switch, and it's everything I'd hoped for and more. I'll take a small break for Metroid so I can beat that game, and I'll spend a little time with MH Stories, but this game may have to go into backlog for a while. Barely have time with MHXX as is, and there's way to many Switch games in the Sept/Oct bullpen right now
I have never played a Monster Hunter game but this is the only one I have had my eye on.Trouble is I am still playing PicCross 3d round two and Ever Oasis plus I have yet to even open Zelda Majoras Mask and as most of my time is on the Ps4 or Switch I doubt I'll get to buy this anytime soon..
@JaxonH
Oh, gosh...
I feel sorry for your damaged 3DS box of Monster Hunter Stories.
Btw, what makes XX and Stories are completely different from gameplay aspect since I have never played Stories before ?
I'm kinda interested with graphic art style but still not sure if I can engage the gameplay since I have ever watched from Youtube for a while to avoid spoilers, the Battle was looked like Pokemon style.
One thing, what is the Objection inside Monster Hunter Stories ? Collecting Monsters as many as I can ? Typically Pokemon games ? Or something different ?
I was not impressed by this games demo like the combat system is very lackluster like Yokai Watch and not to mention how terrible the frame rate is at original 3DS hardware.
I'll stick to the core franchise even if it's leaving Nintendo the way things are looking with Capcom.
I wouldn't say Monster Hunter Stories is a good primer to the series. After playing the demo, it felt like something very different to any traditional Monster Hunter game. I'd treat Stories as something that very different to the other games.
It looks soooo much better than the regular MH games!
I might give this one a try.
Ridiculous. It's the worst possible primer to the main series. I'm not saying it's a bad game. I love it. But turn based battles and making friends with cute versions of the monsters will not prepare you for the main series.
I might pick this up as a tutorial, then, but only if XX gets a Western release. I'm not about to sink an eternity into two massive games on 3DS. I'm attempting to retire mine.
@Anti-Matter
Well, Monster Hunter is real time combat with precision gameplay and epic boss battle showdowns, gathering and crafting and upgrading... etc
MH Stories is a turn based RPG set in the MH universe. You battle and raise monsters, kind of like Pokemon or Dragon Quest Monsters, except way cooler (imo). Can take your monsters into battle with you, ride them around, etc.
Despite what some here are saying, it is actually a great primer for the main series. It will get you familiar with the monsters, items, gathering, etc.
@JaxonH
Ah... I see.
But I still curious about Equipment or Clothing for my characters.
I saw some good looking outfits but i'm worried with the stats.
Contrary with Miitopia, I can give my Miis with the Best Equipment for Higher stats But with Cheap looking appearance (Edit Appearance)
@Anti-Matter
Have you never heard of Fashion Hunter? MH is all about hunting monsters, and looking dang good while doing it!
@JaxonH
Fashion Hunter ?
What is that ?
@Anti-Matter
It's a joke. I explained right afterward it's because Monster Hunter is all about being fashionable
I own Generations, and after the tutorial quests I didn't plat it again. Maybe I just suck at it, but I find the controls very hard. Stories though, I liked it from the demo. So I guess I'll buy it.
I may try the demo now, still on the fence about a purchase. I'm more interested in other upcoming games though (as well as games in my backlog).
Also what I've also wanted from a Pokémon game, RIP Greninja!
I put ten hours on the demo of MonHun:Stories already to complete the demo. Such a great game. I would say way better than the "mainline" games.
Will be definitely looking at buying the full game, I've seen the physical go for 30€ already at launch, a very nice price.
I'm looking forward to Monster Hunter World (Xbox One) but Stories might become a perfect game for my New 3DS.
Well, it's not like kids haven't been subjected to combo-gatcha mechanics in their phone games already, so I guess this might be a nice evolution for them.
The only thing I will say that makes this a primer is essentially the world itself. It will not prime you in gameplay too much, Just a pinch such as gathering and crafting. I still think it's a good game and would have been all over it had they used the same types of adult models from the core games but it's fine. After AA PW: Spirit of Justice and Shovel Knight: King Of Cards, my 3DS will be retired. Save for once in awhile playing Lufia.
If I'm late to the 3DS game and just want to get a used one to play the new Metroid and this, should I get a "New" Nintendo 3DS? Any idea if the experience is different for games like this?
@kokirii
Buy the New 3DS XL.
New 3DS XL has Louder sound speaker.
You will enjoy it.
this game is a must buy. It is a rock paper scissor rpg. The demo was amazing. The game is amazing. Never got into MH, but this one has me hooked. It is in my hurricane survival kit.
@kokirii I'd really recommend the "New" model, it's a really nice upgrade to the original (I own both)
It's far more accessible than the regular Monster Hunter!
@kokirii My favourite is the smaller New 3DS.
@nintendolife wheres the review?
never played any MH games before but i will be playing this and cant wait. my copy should arrive soon via amazon but wish it was in my hands now!
Hoping this will receive an HD port to the Switch.
I feel that monster games (Pokemon, digimon, dragonquest monsters) are better enjoyed on a handheld.. But that's just me.. Lol
Somehow I doubt a little cutesy game that's basically Pokemon is a great "tutorial" for one of the most hardcore series out there.
@JaxonH
Lol, yep can't beat a bit of glam
Just need a Monster Hunter Stories 2 for Switch and I'll be happy ☺
This is like saying Pokemon Pinball is a perfect primer for the main Pokemon games, lol. They are completely different.
I tried the demo, and as this game is NOTHING like monster hunter, I wasn't interested. Personally I hated the rpg turn based battles. It felt extremely shallow and I was bored just playing the demo. Sorry but there it is.
Now if it were just monster hunter but not so punishing and with the inclusion of riding monsters, then THAT would be a good intro to the series but with a fun twist. Frankly, a game like that would be a pleasant romp through MH land. Which after 3 and 4 and Generations, I'd say we deserve...
@thesilverbrick It won't help you when playing the main series, I'm not really sure what the article is getting at. They are totally different types of games and have no real connection.
This should be on the Switch. I don't play 3ds anymore but I would buy this on Switch.
@Hughesy I'll pass, then. Appreciate the heads-up.
I'm planning to get this game. I've been meaning to play a normal turn based RPG and this ought to be it. It looks great and the the gameplay is deeply ingrained into the story concept.
