A couple weeks ago, it was announced that development on Shantae: Half-Genie Hero had been completed and that a release date was forthcoming. Fortunately, it has now been confirmed that the wait won't be much longer, the game releases in just a couple of weeks.
WayForward recently updated the Kickstarter to announce that Shantae comes out on 20th December for all platforms. More importantly, for those of you who backed it, the early backer codes are being emailed out next week. Depending on the platform you chose, these codes may not activate until 12th Decmber, but it'll still be an early look regardless. As for the retail release, no date has been announced yet, but XSEED will be making an announcement sometime in the near future.
What do you think? Were you one of the Kickstarter backers? Will you be picking this up? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Cool.
Xmas edition confirmed.
Santa: Half Genie Hero!
According to Amazon the retail release is also December 20th.
@WillTheLion I wouldn't be too sure. If that was the case, they would've said so in the update.
I think I'll hold out for the physical release.
About time! Though I think I'll stand with @GammaPhonic and wait for a physical release
I need physical Shantaes!
@GammaPhonic Me too, retail Shantae all the way. Assuming Europe gets a retail release of course. Fingers crossed!
I watched a GameXplain video of this game, and I think it looks great (even if the art style's not my cup of tea)! But I don't want to continue wasting my money on the Wii U since almost nobody supports it anymore, so I'll wait for this game to be released on the Nintendo Switch instead. And if it never happens, I'll get it on Steam.
I think I'll get the PS4 or Xbox version not WiiU. Looking forward to it whichever I choose!
When ye speak of a physical version, I'm fairly sure it's only for North America.
I was going to get this on Wii U, but now I'm wondering whether this will make it to Switch.
@G-Boy That is exactly the reason why fewer developers support Wii U. "Wasting money" is a way to show the developers that it's worth developing for the system.
At least I want to support developers that make games for Wii U. Those developers deserve my money.
I backed this - really not bothered about it now though for some reason.
Yay! Just in time for my birthday!
Woooooooo Vita version incoming.
Wft is all this "waiting for a physical version" codswallop? It's like people value plastic and tat over gameplay.
I for one welcome our new pirate overlords.
@G-Boy how does that make sense? Surely support the devs that are showing support for the system, no? I'll be getting the WiiU version to show my gratitude for their continued support.
It's kinda sad reading the "Wii U is dead, no-one support the Wii U" comments.
To be fair, when this project got funded 3 years ago, it was announced for Wii U, Steam, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The last two did get upgraded to Xbox one / PlayStation 4 because most of the backers were happy for the upgrade. If the Switch had been released last yeah, I bet WayForward would have done the same.
The Switch's timing most likely won't help the sales for the Wii U version.
@Pazuzu666 What? Some people just like physical releases. Maybe they're collectors, maybe they're selling completed games to save money (like me).
@RadioShadow If you're talking about my comment, I have to say that I've always loved the Wii U, I just don't want to support it anymore because the Switch was announced.
IT'S NOT CANCELLED!!! I was bracing myself for weeks that despite thier Kickstarter promises, it would skip the Wii U just like Hyper Light Drifter did. Day 1 download for me. Now we just need a Shantae Amiibo!!!
Figures that Swapdoodle revived Nikki just before this game's release. She's set to appear as a ghost in HGH.
EDIT: Actually, I'm surprised they didn't name her "Mimikki."
I pre-ordered my Wii U copy back in August and have been waiting through a number of supposed release dates. My track order still promises a 12/13/16 delivery date, but I'd setting for 12/20/16, which Amazon claims is the release date for the Wii U version . . . but MitchVogel is probably right about that not being the date either.....
@Elanczewski ok, I just can't stand the fact this will all be landfill soon enough.
Day 1!!!!
Come to think of it, it's a bit strange that WayForward isn't (yet) on the list of developers supporting Switch.
Regarding Half-Genie Hero, I'm looking forward to it, but have reservations.
Nice, just in time for the holidays. But it's the retail version that I want.
Oh wow, in time for Christmas. I have a side question: Were there any details given about the story in this game?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE They were asked and said it would be a different publisher for Europe but cannot say further then that.
Going to wait for the Physical copy instead.
@Pazuzu666 It's not worth worrying about that. A game like Shantae likely won't be released in huge numbers and it's the kind of game people keep, assuming it's good. There are games with less value as games in my opinion that are out there in greater number and will end up as waste.
I like digital releases, but there are some legit reasons people prefer physical. It's probably very good for the developer that people buy up the physical copies.
any1 remember if this is getting a physical edition or not.
I haven't yet played any Shantae games, but think they all look very nice. This game also looks great. I prefer sprite games, but this new one looks like a nice balance of 2d using a 3d engine. Sadly, I don't have a platform to play this(I'm on Linux PC and android devices as modern stuff goes at the moment) and I likely don't have a graphics card up to the task. Hopefully it ends up being a fantastic and successful game. I'll keep it in mind when I have hardware to run it.
Yup yup. Been a long time coming too
That's 3 purchases from me: Wii U and PS4 digitally, and Vita version retail.
My backer code worked. Playing it on Wii-U right now!
