Re: The Original Game In Pokémon-Like Series 'Nexomon' Lands On Switch Next Month

ShadJV

@RupeeClock I backed Monster Crown! The beta has been really solid and I look forward to getting my Switch copy in October!

For further elaboration to people interested:

The main draws of the game are breeding and fusion. Monsters have “DNA” and breeding or fusing two monsters results in a sort of cross breeds, with the new monster taking some attributes from each parent (like species, color, stats, and even typing and growth rate). The main differences are breeding keeps the parents but starts the child off at level 4 once it hatches, while fusing results in a monster with a level comparable to the original two monsters - additionally, certain fusions create entirely new monsters!

The battle system otherwise is like a simplified (though not necessarily easier) Pokemon battle system. There’s also a lot of lore, legendary monsters, and customization, but the star of the show is really the breeding and fusion. This allows you to create truly unique teams - the drawback being in multiplayer you’ll have no idea of the stats of the monster you’re facing, since everything is fully customizable once you understand how breeding works.

Re: Soapbox: Playdate Sold Out In 20 Minutes - Is It Time For A New Nintendo Handheld?

ShadJV

Who is claiming the Switch is a console first and a handheld second?? I’d definitely say it’s more of a handheld than a console - despite how much I play docked, in terms of specs this is clearly a handheld that doubles as a console (rather than the opposite).

But no, I absolutely do NOT want a pure handheld from Nintendo ever again. I prefer not having their resources split between two platforms and I prefer only having to buy games for one. It’s freed up my limited budget for other things and I can’t imagine going back to how it used to be. A hybrid console is simply my ideal, it allows me to continue my games both on the go and at home. Like I would go so far to say I’ll be upset if they go back to having their handheld and console separate. It was hard for me to financially manage that in later years and by the Wii U I was grateful that their console was getting so few titles so I could focus on 3DS - juggling both was too much for me.

I still think this conversation is silly though. The Switch is a handheld. I play it a lot in docked but more in handheld.

Re: New Pokémon Snap's First Major Update Is Now Live, Here Are The Full Patch Notes

ShadJV

I hope this is the first of many updates, I don’t even care if some end up being paid. Seriously, there’s now 234 Pokemon in this game compared to the first one’s 63. We’re 18 short of having quadruple the content! This is honestly one of the highest quality Pokemon titles in years (thanks Namco), I’d happily shell out money to keep it going. Heck, I already mentally planned updates and expected to have to pay for anything we get, this is a decent amount for free in an already complete game.

Re: 'The Lost Records' Is A New Fan-Made Expansion That Brings Skyward Sword To Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

ShadJV

@tntswitchfan68 except it’s not for nothing. Even ignoring the fact that anything uploaded is forever available online (any games “taken down” can still be found now, you just have to dig for them), most creators do this stuff for the process. By the time they release this, they probably already got what they wanted from it. They probably didn’t want the limitations of Game Builder Garage, and if they cared about people playing their finished product then they would’ve used actual coding instead. But it’s not for nothing if your only goal was to make it.

Re: Soapbox: Super Metroid Showed Me I Had The Right To Exist

ShadJV

I did always feel the “rewards” for clear time were a bit contradictory to the games, especially since the first game made such an effort to surprise the player by revealing the lead was a woman only at the end. Even the instructions kept up the ruse. It was the perfect opportunity to show that male players can enjoy playing as a female character just as much, and that female characters can kick just as much butt without being fan service… and then they turn fan service into a reward. It’s a minor thing, but it’s always bugged me a bit.

Re: New Mario Golf: Super Rush Website Gives Us A Closer Look At Characters And Courses

ShadJV

@DekuNut @Yorumi @Seacliff @tntswitchfan68 I don’t know why people are assuming this is the entire course list. The website says, verbatim, “Here are some of the lavish locations you’ll be playing at.” “Some” implies there’s other courses, and I would assume that these are just the early courses in the game. Otherwise their wording is intentionally misleading.

Re: May's Monster Hunter Digital Event To Cover Rise 3.0 And More Stories 2, Airs Next Week

ShadJV

@RiasGremory I… uh… are you a troll? I can’t comprehend how you know what G rank is without knowing it ALWAYS costs more, but in case you somehow are serious…

Every single MH game has required a purchase for G rank. Every single one. Traditionally this was done by rereleasing the game a second time, a year or so later, with G rank added in. Meaning you would have to purchase the game twice to get G rank, or skip the initial release altogether. These expanded versions literally had G in the title, or Ultimate in the western releases. The reason our version of the fourth game had G rank is because we didn’t even get the original release, they just waited and released the Ultimate versions. Monster Hunter World allowed G rank to be purchased as an upgrade because it finally was on a console capable of adding large digital upgrades, and that’s very likely what they’ll do here. They’ve never released G rank for free and they never will.

Re: Surprise! Nintendo Confirms That "Many" New Games Are Coming This Year

ShadJV

@Giygas_95 that’s fair to not like it but that doesn’t mean only the last Nintendo published game you care about counts. Since Age of Calamity we’ve had at least 4 Nintendo published games, and even if you count 3D World as a port, that still leaves Fitness Boxing 2, Bravely Default 2, and New Pokemon Snap.

Re: Before New Pokémon Snap, There Had Already Been "A Couple Of Attempts" At Rebooting The Series

ShadJV

@dux you definitely could, I replay it every few years so I’m fairly familiar with it. You’re the second person I’ve seen who didn’t realize that though, so it might just be people don’t remember the feature?

Either way, that’s how I got a lot of the stickers I printed out at Blockbuster from my N64 memory card. Because my coolest pictures often weren’t the highest scoring ones.

Re: Before New Pokémon Snap, There Had Already Been "A Couple Of Attempts" At Rebooting The Series

@jump for the average adult in my generation, most of us can’t afford to travel and so our most affordable way to experience something new is good. Not to mention food is universal - not all of your peers will relate to your hobbies but everyone eats food. Photographs have always been more efficient at communication than writing (a picture worth a thousand words is a saying for a reason), and with the accessibility of photography nowadays we can easily communicate with a quick picture. Rather than describe to our friends the new experience we recently had (which, once again, is often food), we can just share a picture and that’s enough. It’s faster, easier, and more accurate than describing the food. We can, to some degree, share our experiences with all of our peers instantly.

Additionally, it’s not like pictures of food are anything new, it’s just that everyone has a camera now and so there’s more of it. Wedding photographers always have taken pictures of the food at the wedding, especially the cake, for example. Even go back before photographs and you’ll see a lot of artists painted and drew food (have you never seen the cliche artist painting a bowl of fruit?) Food is a big part of the human experience and lots of our life centers on it, including art.

Re: Talking Point: Is "Cheesing" A Legitimate Strategy?

ShadJV

@RetroXombi essentially. If I find my opponent struggles against a certain strategy, am I going to avoid doing that strategy to make it easier for them? Of course not, I’m trying to win. If I found something that gives me an advantage within the confines of the game... well, they better learn how to take advantage of that, too.

Re: Talking Point: Is "Cheesing" A Legitimate Strategy?

ShadJV

After enough games with user created content, like Super Mario Maker, as well as games by newer devs that aren’t always clear what the intended method is...well, the cheese line has blurred for me. If achievable it’s within the game mechanics, it’s fair game in my opinion. Heck, there were a few shrines in BotW that I’m not even sure if what I did was the intended solution!

This holds true in competitive games. It’s not like hacking, where the player is giving themselves an advantage that others can’t achieve within the confines of the game. If something is unintended, it’s up to the developer to fix it, not the player to pretend it’s not there. And sometimes the cheese can become meta and ruin the game, but once again, players shouldn’t have the responsibility of ignoring strategies that actually work.
