Re: Mario + Rabbids Producer Talks About Sequel's Character Selection Process

ShadJV

@SteamEngenius yeah it’d be nice to have Rosalina but not a dealbreaker for me, even as a Rosalina fan. I’m still excited, the first was really fun, and I don’t care for Rabbids either.

The first game required every party to have Mario and one Rabbid, leaving one slot open, and it was clearly balanced for that. Having Luigi and Peach (or either of them with Yoshi) would’ve resulted in some pretty broken combos.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak

ShadJV

@burninmylight exactly. The grind made it so much worse and is precisely why I couldn’t bring myself to double dip with Rise on PC without cross progression. MH grinding can be so time consuming, and it’s a majority of the gameplay loop. I’m fine doing it once because there’s some thrill in managing it initially, but to lose all that and have to do it again? Definitely not.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak

ShadJV

@Silly_G personally I am very glad Capcom has the mindset not to repurpose it into a new game anymore. That might have been the most irritating thing about the series before World. Having to do all the same content again? Having nothing carry over? Having to pay full retail price for the same game twice? No thank you, I’m not sure I could’ve stuck with the series much longer with that. I already gotta slog through low rank every game (which I wish I could honestly skip because it’s generally the most boring part of the game), I sure as heck don’t want to do it twice. I suppose no physical is a small downside but as a MH fan I have no interest in buying it a second time for a “complete” version, skipping the first “version” and waiting a year, or even returning to it when the next MH game releases. Every time I try to return to an older entry I’m so broken by the QoL changes that I have a miserable time. So personally, I don’t even see much value in owning MH games physically anymore. I’m digital only for a few game franchises, and MH is absolutely one of them.

Re: Rare's Banjo-Kazooie Is Rumoured To Be Making A Comeback

ShadJV

@Not_Soos also I feel like I went past my first point too quickly trying to get to my second point, but I do want to say good job at least reaching Rusty Bucket Bay, you got through most of the game! I hope you enjoyed it at least a bit, despite feeling awful. There’s only really one world after that one and I’ve seen mixed opinions on it, though it’s my favorite. If you do manage to beat RBB without restore points though, hats off to you. I’ve yet to see a newbie manage the game without restore points or save states in quite a few years, that world is brutal and I refuse to even do it without restore points, I suffered enough as a child! 😂

Re: Rare's Banjo-Kazooie Is Rumoured To Be Making A Comeback

ShadJV

@Not_Soos you nearly finished the game then, if you reached Rusty Bucket Bay… I also can’t say the fan name for that stage because it would go against NintendoLife’s rules but let’s just say it’s likely the most hated world in the franchise and incredibly unforgiving. I wouldn’t wish anyone to play that with restore points, and no QoL features will make it bearable.

The button thing simply is because it’s mapping an N64 layout to another controller - it’s button limitations and was fine with c-buttons but there’s just not enough buttons on the Switch for all the moves. The c-buttons map to the right stick, and it sorta sucks and the only fix for that is the N64 controller which is impossible to get and probably overpriced. As for a map… I’ll give you that but I don’t think it’s worth making a remaster over that, nor do I think it’s worth Rare’s limited resources. Rare is pretty small and doesn’t release many games these days, any remaster of Banjo would mean a new entry would be unlikely until the following gen and would delay their other projects. The layout of Grunty’s Lair is confusing but it’s also sorta the point and why it’s fairly small. It’s an 11 hour game (on average for new players - experienced players beat it in a sitting or two), the worlds are pretty tiny, and you only need to backtrack twice for 100% (never for any%) so generally at worst there’s a short fumble between areas.

But still, as a fan of Thousand Year Door I absolutely want a remake, but I doubt they’d learn much from it. Banjo Kazooie I feel that’s unnecessary for even moreso, heck as someone who buys remasters of most games I love it’s one of the few I would refuse to buy. I have it on three platforms and it plays pretty much perfectly. Tooie is the superior game for me and, with your analogy, I’d rather a Tooie remake than Kazooie, similar to how you picked Thousand Year Door rather than Paper Mario 64. A lot was learned from Tooie’s development and using Kazooie as practice for a new game would feel like a step backwards. I’d still prefer a new entry but I at least might buy a Tooie remaster. Not that I think that the remaster thing necessarily, I’m not convinced that helps a series much. BotW feels nothing like older Zelda games, I find the original Crash games pretty horrid even in their remakes, and as for Spongebob I can’t speak on it because I’ve never played those games.

I think we’ll just have to respectfully disagree there is all. If all that gets announced is a remaster/remake, I doubt any announcement for the series could disappoint me more. Sure, in theory they could make a new one if that sells well, but looking at recent attempts to revive collectathons it’s not a mainstream genre and I don’t have expectations it’d perform well enough for Microsoft to want to keep it alive again. I’d rather have a new entry before the series goes back into hibernation for being so niche.

Re: Rare's Banjo-Kazooie Is Rumoured To Be Making A Comeback

ShadJV

@Faruko and you know this how? A pretty big percentage of the BK community are exclusively Nintendo owners, and Microsoft isn’t dumb. They could very well make sure it releases on Switch, it’s hardly a franchise that needs more powerful hardware and Microsoft has been collaborating with Nintendo more and more.

Re: Rare's Banjo-Kazooie Is Rumoured To Be Making A Comeback

ShadJV

@Not_Soos thankfully restore points fix the note issue even better than Xbox’s method (which wasn’t even originally in that version, it was patched in when players started complaining it was too hard). I understand the association with sickness, I’ve had some great games ruined by associating them with bad times in my life, and I do wish one of my favorite childhood games wasn’t ruined for you. I do however hope it’s not a remaster or remake but rather a new game - while it has some rough patches, the original is fine the way it is and any of the tougher sections are fixed with restore points anyways. We haven’t had a true sequel since Tooie though, decades ago - Grunty’s Revenge for the GBA was, at best BK Lite, Banjo Pilot was a spin-off, and Nuts & Bolts… well, I’m kinder than some towards it, I still say it wasn’t a bad game, it was a bad Banjo game and not what fans want from the franchise. So many of us are still wanting the never released Banjo Threeie and I just hope we get that…

Honestly though, this rumor is so vague it could even just be Tooie on NSO, assuming it’s real. My expectations are so low.

Re: Pokémon-Inspired Game Monster Crown Teases New And Exciting Announcements For 2022

ShadJV

I haven’t put much time into it yet. Most of us Switch backers didn’t even get our copies until the week of Christmas. A lot of backers weren’t happy about that, as we literally backed it and didn’t get it until months after release.

To the dev’s credit, it wasn’t entirely their fault, they were having trouble getting the eShop keys from Nintendo, but I haven’t heard of other games having this problem so it feels like they didn’t really plan ahead in terms of ordering them… frustrating all around… but worth noting this because it seems like nobody outside of the backers was aware they were screwed for a few months…

Re: A New Limited-Time Pokémon Brilliant Diamond And Shining Pearl Statue Distribution Event Has Begun

ShadJV

@RupeeClock I agree that waiting until the third gym is a bit far. If the player has the dual pack in that case, they already know how to unlock it early, and that’s only 1 gym in so it’s not that far (in fact, that’s fairly normal for Mystery Gift).

On the other hand, a kid is only going to know about this promotion if they pay attention to stuff online, since the news about it is online and the code is online. If they go that far, they’ll probably easily find out how to unlock early, and it only takes an hour or two of gameplay to reach that point. They could certainly reach that point on Christmas. Most kids won’t even be aware they missed it though, so there’s really no big issue, plus everything here can be found in the Super Underground on your own (I’ve not spent long down there and have a few of these statues already).

Re: Bravely Default Producer Tells Fans To Look Forward To Next Year's Anniversary

ShadJV

Bravely Default was simultaneously really amazing and really frustrating (for spoilery reasons). Bravely Second was underrated - sure, it wasn’t quite as clever as the original, but it still was well written and didn’t suffer from the same problem as the first.

Bravely Default II… I’ve yet to finish. It’s not bad, but… it’s fairly generic, especially with how many great RPGs releases this year. Maybe I’ll finish it eventually, but I worry for future games. They can’t just bank on the same gimmicks the whole series uses, they need some unique ideas. JRPGs are a dime a dozen and, given their length, I really only have time for the outstanding ones… this year alone gave us MH Stories 2, NEO:TWEWY, Tales of Arise, SMTV, and Pokemon BDSP, to name a few. I’d recommend all of those above BD2.

It sucks because I love the series. I hope they learn from this release going forward, few RPGs have blown my mind as much as the first BD.

Re: Nintendo Is Offering Free Trials For Switch Online, Even If You've Used One Before (US)

ShadJV

@Jokerwolf I disagree, Nintendo highly values their older titles, they practically vault them like Disney, slowly dripping them out again on every generation. Any company that charges you $10 for a 25 year old game is not viewing that game as throwaway, they’re viewing it as a long term cash cow. They do their best to make consumers pay for the same games over and over again.

Also your statement that they throw the games in their for added value make no sense. Value to what? All the Expansion Pass is is older gamers. They’re charging $50/year for literally 9 N64 games and drip feeding them out. And let’s not even mention the Genesis games since you can get more of them for less money in a one time eShop purchase (or physical game card). The N64 games are what they’re trying to market to players more.

Re: Nintendo Is Offering Free Trials For Switch Online, Even If You've Used One Before (US)

ShadJV

To everyone complaining it doesn’t include the Expansion Pack… I mean, obviously? That’d be super dumb for them to include it, which one of you would have your mind changed by a trial of that? For one, a week is more than enough to beat every N64 game on offer there, meaning even if they ran flawlessly most people would already experience everything it has to offer, and two, none of it does run flawlessly (it runs pretty good but has some noticeable issues that most players wouldn’t accept) so it’d likely make less people subscribe, not more.

Nintendo is very aware that people are unhappy with it at this point. Whether they’re gonna fix it and make it more worth the value remains to be seen, but they’re not dumb enough to demo that right now, that’s not gonna get them any more sales. If they fix it and add a bunch more content, then it’s worth discussing whether they should have a trial, but right now it’d be yet another dumb move after a series of dumb moves. At least they’re self aware enough right now to realize that move would be dumb.

Re: Sonic The Hedgehog Collab Coming To Monster Hunter Rise Later This Month

ShadJV

@Greatluigi the demos are really bad at showcasing the game. That being said, they’ve become progressively faster paced, and combat is so frantic now that it is almost unrecognizable compared to older titles, as characters can do all sorts of crazy combos and evasive maneuvers now. The emphasis on this entry was really mobility, since the characters are quite literally ninjas.

Re: Sonic The Hedgehog Collab Coming To Monster Hunter Rise Later This Month

ShadJV

@the_beaver we are getting more meaningful content in the expansion coming next year, but as noted, World’s live service model was an exception, not the rule. Those two updates with additional monsters and story were basically part of the game itself that wasn’t ready at launch, and the base game concluded with the second update. Don’t expect anything other than cosmetics until next summer’s expansion.

Re: Happy Halloween! Nintendo Has Released A Free Metroid Dread Demo

ShadJV

@HobbitGamer for me, quality is way more important than quantity. And my tastes tend not to be mainstream. I took well over a hundred hours to complete BotW and there’s a lot of games 10 hours or less that I feel are more worth $60 for mr. My logic is BotW I loved maybe 20 hours of it at most, but scattered through the game. So I’d be kinda bored spending 2 hours wandering through the environment than have an exciting 10 minutes when I found something fun and then go back to being bored. The 10 minutes were worth the 2 hours for me (at least in an initial playthrough) and hypothetically they can be more fun than anything in the 10 hour game I loved, but the 10 hour game was consistently fun for me. I’d rather pay $60 for 10 consistent hours of fun than for 100 hours of average gameplay punctuated with short memorable moments. I find most games that are 100+ hours are like that for me, and nowadays I prefer the shorter games that don’t have dull moments… especially since I already don’t have enough time to get through every game that catches my eye.

I’m gonna go back to Dread for hard mode at some point, and now and then revisit it when I want to fit a 4-8 hour game in between bigger releases, but the 11ish hours it took me to 100% it were enjoyable enough that it more than earned its value to me.

Re: Happy Halloween! Nintendo Has Released A Free Metroid Dread Demo

ShadJV

@HobbitGamer ironically it competes with Samus Returns as one of the longest Metroid games. They’re just short games in generally. They’re meant to be replayed for better times. Which isn’t for everyone, if you don’t replay games it’ll be hard to get your money’s worth for $60.

Re: Don't Worry, The '3D All-Stars' Version Of Super Mario 64 Will Still Likely Be The Definitive Edition

ShadJV

@EarthboundBenjy I doubt it. All Stars wasn’t even that limited, so anyone who wanted to pay $60 for it should’ve been able to get it. And realistically it never was going to get a price drop. It more likely was to pressure people into getting that collection because of FOMO. Similar to why Disney vaults their movies.

SM64 doesn’t really change the value of the subscription - nobody will feel this subscription is a better value than All Stars (which lets you keep all three games). Pretty much anybody who felt All Stars wasn’t worth $60 would feel this subscription isn’t worth the price, whatever it is, at least as a means to get SM64. Heck, financially they’d make more from the one time $60 price than this would bring to subscriptions (even at the higher estimates of $20 a year, who will get three years of the service just because of SM64?).

Re: Capcom Says It's Unable To Add Cross-Save And Cross-Play To Monster Hunter Rise

ShadJV

Hey. Capcom. Maybe check if you can do a thing before you put it in your survey?

Either way this now swung to an absolutely no for me. I would’ve 100% double dipped if we got cross saves, and had they not even asked our input then there was a chance I’d still double dip because of the visual upgrade and the chance for mods. But now I feel misled. It’s for the best, no point in starting over after 300 hours of Rise.
