@Gridatttack due to not all levels being guaranteed clearable with the new shapes, it likely affects the physics. Good luck completing the game with them all, considering that disclaimer! Honestly, seems like they could’ve at least tested that much though...
@AlexSora89 the game will throw more than enough money at you for those basics - heck, every raid drops a bunch of sellable items to you that more than compensate that much. And there’s someone who buys a treasure each day for double (he requests the items). Besides, the Gmax Meowth method only works after you beat the game and at that point, you should have more than enough money for anything other than buying vitamins (and once again, maybe if you’re collecting ALL the clothes in the game, but that’s still pretty feasible by doing raids).
Escape ropes are irrelevant, idk if they’re even in the game and if so they’re pointless because there’s only two caves, both of which are more like tunnels (and very short), and no random encounters. Only a handful of TMs need to be bought (rather than found) and TRs are more useful anyways (which can’t be bought). Repels are similarly pointless because, once again, no random encounters. Potions and revives... maybe you’ll need if you struggle a lot? But I had a huge excess and didn’t even play strategically, and I haven’t bought a single potion or revive. You can access your PC Box anywhere anyways so worst case scenario just switch a Pokémon in. That leaves just balls and clothes. You should be fine in cash. Without even using the Meowth method, I’ve yet to every drop below 200,000 money (sometimes reaching 500,000) and I don’t intentionally farm money, I rarely even bother selling my sellable items. The game throws more money at you than a Luigi’s Mansion game. The only reason the Meowth method becomes worthwhile in vitamin farming is it costs 520,000 to max out a Pokémon’s EVs with vitamins. Pretty much the only thing you’d need massive amounts of money for (as a team would take over 3 million to max out).
@AlexSora89 I’ve actually been informed Gmax Meowth isn’t obtainable in game and my sources there were wrong? Even if that’s true though, I have my doubts that they wouldn’t bring the event around again eventually though. And ultimately all that money grinding method is good for is if you want to max out EVs with vitamins - if you’re in less of a rush, there’s a passive way to raise EVs which takes several days but you barely have to touch the game (Pokejobs), so it’s not super vital, it’s just useful if you want to throw together a team in one day (and still involves dozens of hours, I honestly prefer Pokejobs tbh).
Can also be useful for buying all the outfits but like... that isn’t as daunting, especially if you do raids.
@Ludovsky exactly. People focus too much on the downsides of DLC here but really, at the very least this takes the place of the third entries for less money and at the most offers a lot of potential for the franchise. Ever want a Pokémon MMO? This growth was necessary. It’ll probably be an awkward transition but in the long run the series is more likely to benefit from it. We’ve had two gens on each of the previous two handhelds and honestly the strain of churning them out every 2-3 years shows. This could make them more evergreen titles and give them space to breathe. And if they wanted to be scummy they’d lock the expanded Pokedex behind the paywall but we’re getting that update for free. It’s not perfect but I prefer to be optimistic with these changes.
@Kaori-chan yeah my bad, that was a pretty insignificant typo and I didn’t intend to argue or dismiss your feelings. And I 100% agree with the lack of difficulty. The games really at least need post-game challenges like the Battle Frontier. Maybe the new DLC will have it though it might be too little too late for many fans. I don’t see them doing heavy changes for next gen either given these titles performed fine, but then again maybe they’ll decide it’s the gen they want to implement changes, especially if they already established a gen on the Switch (honestly, I’d be surprised if gen 9 isn’t on Switch). Or maybe they’ll finally take a little longer between gens (which would alleviated the limited dev times). After all, this year seems focused on the expansions and they could skip a couple years to do gen 4 remakes and gen 2 Let’s Go games - even if the latter doesn’t excite you, it buys them time for their main team to polish the next mainline games. Honestly, I think the biggest problem is TPC demands new games every couple years and good games need more time than that to develop. GF is being rushed, and whether the blame is with them or TPC, we likely will get rushed games until their timelines are spread out.
But you know what’s just considered? DLC expansions might be the long needed solution here. No, seriously, they take less resources than republishing the same game with minor tweaks, they give the team extra time to work on an expanded pokedex, and they add more potential revenue for each gen. This turns them into evergreen titles that only have to be released once a console generation with an expansion or two throughout its life, which can make up for the “lost” sales of squeezing two gens onto one console. Once again, using traditional remakes and Let’s Go remakes to fill the gaps. It maybe won’t appease everybody but at the very least, TPC’s greed could be satiated while the games could get proper development cycles. The quality of the games improve, along with the amount of content (allowing for a challenging postgame). Just a random thought. You can’t please everyone but they still probably could please more people. While I did enjoy these games, it’d be great if they could appeal to more of the older fans.
@Kaori-chan Sorry, I wrote that at 3 in the morning and was a bit overtired, I meant to say subjective. That’s on me, I completely used the wrong word. I fixed it now.
@Kaori-chan correct. It is subjective. And based on sales, enough players still seem to subjectively enjoy it. If sales drop enough next gen, they’ll adjust accordingly, but as it stands, they’re likely going to continue down their current path, which is great for those that enjoyed it.
People speak with their wallets and it seems people spoke pretty loudly here. The games are selling great. Ultimately, you have to remember that despite the large adult community, the target demographic for Pokémon is children and children are how the franchise has been one of the highest grossing franchises in history. What they care most about is keeping that demographic happy, and that’s an easy task by brand power alone. The older fans are fickle enough to turn to emulators, romhacks, and other competing monster battling games. They cost more to please and no matter what, there will always be parts of the community that are unhappy with their choices. It’s easier and more profitable for them to appeal to the kids. And enough of the older community is still remaining around anyways to play competitively, shiny hunt, and more. It sucks for fans that aren’t happy with their decisions but I was sure these games would be hits. The ones complaining are primarily adults and older teens, and those are only a smart part of their consumers.
@Zach777 yeah most of the people trashing it haven’t played it and are doing so purely based on the controversies. Is it perfect? No, but it’s still very enjoyable, especially if you have friends to do things like raids with. I’d probably give it a solid 8/10. Story is poor but Pokemon hasn’t had a great story since Black and White (and X and Y were worse than these there); I’ve never played this series for the story. My only other real complaints would be no real postgame challenges (but we haven’t had those since Black and White either) and subpar animations (still haven’t had any great ones in the 3D games but at least the previous two had the excuse of being on a handheld). When it comes down to it, the animations are the one thing I’d say is an issue, but it doesn’t hamper my enjoyment too bad - at this point, I turn animations off when I’m doing things in single player, as they’re boring to watch. It’s mainly noticeable with the dynamax attacks.
At the very least, they’re not as bad as people are making them out to be. And I consider DLC a huge positive compared to them releasing a third version for the same price. I wouldn’t be surprised if in a year or two they release a version that simply has it all on one card, similar to past gens anyways.
@spoondriver yeah, it’s really unfortunate, because like an hour in I was like, “This is great!” And a couple hours later I was already frustrated and fatigued from it. Honestly, they should’ve just taken out the heart system and entirely had it be about reducing their guts, cutting battle times into a third of the length. Problem is, then the game ends up like 3-4 hours long, so they’d need to add more content. Everything in the game was great ideas that were poorly executed. If they were to actually follow it up with a sequel, I would cautiously keep an eye on it though. I liked the battle system, it just was too slow and too long.
Oh and the attack animations were horribly lazy, even for Gamefreak. All of the main character’s attacks use the exact same animation. Making the battles even more tedious as there isn’t much to visually watch.
@Gravitron it’s certainly good. Whether it’s great or worth the price is another story. It’s essentially a card based RPG.
Pros: -The game mechanics are pretty unique -The strategy can be fairly complex -The characters and game world is charming
Cons: -The story isn’t very deep -Progression is very linear (you keep the same cards through the entire game, just upgrading each one a couple times) -There’s little variety in terms of the enemies (like barely into double digits) -The game is short for an RPG -Battles quickly become lengthy wars of attrition (and you need to fight the same bosses more than once to power up cards, which is important if you don’t want to fight them even more to try and get good RNG) -Strategy quickly becomes tedious (despite being complex) -Difficulty spikes pretty hard which teaches you to actually employ strategy, but ultimately as a card game a couple bad RNG moments can cost the entire battle (frustrating when you just spent 30+ minutes on the battle)
Despite listing more cons than pros, it isn’t a horrible game - I outright loved the mechanics. The real frustrations are the long drawn out battles, harsh difficulty spikes, and chance to be screwed by RNG at any moment (which mainly are bad because of the battle lengths). The lack of any real ability to edit your deck (aside from upgrading cards) and few new mechanics introduced to the player (while the enemies each gain at least one new gimmick) are more minor complaints, as they’re noticeable because of the bigger problems. It’s probably not a bad game to pick up on sale, but it overall feels unpolished and I wish Gamefreak spent some more time on it. I wouldn’t mind a sequel that improved on the ideas, but they don’t tend to make sequels outside of Pokémon. Maybe wait and hope for a big sale or discount. I ultimately wished I didn’t spend the money on it, despite enjoying it at first.
@Blizzia nope, I meant fourth. I meant the part of the game where you choose your house is where this story would split off. Instead of the three other choices there, you’d pick a fourth.
@rushiosan 3H has done phenomenal in the West, no idea where you’re getting the idea that “most people hate it”. The series has done better than AW, and if Days of Ruin didn’t bomb, they’d probably have continued that series as well.
@brambalk if they’re deep under the school and basically rejected, they might not have even been aware of what was going on. Remember, they’ve mentioned multiple times in game that no one even is aware of all the secret passages down there (except MAYBE Rhea?) It’s not hard to imagine they’ve been there all alone and their story covers a lot of the plot holes. As for joining them, I imagine they’ll add a way to discover the passage down there during the part where you meet all the students, and then allow you to “pick a fourth option” like the Fates DLC did.
@nhSnork doesn’t work on regular trainer battles because you can’t gmax in them. And this game has no elite four analogue, you just gotta do the championship tournament to farm the money (which at least has different trainers every time).
@nhSnork basically, as you said, some loot goes up to 4 digits in sales... gmax Meowth hits 6 digits in a battle. In minutes. Super efficient. 4 digits isn’t much when a single vitamin is 10,000.
@nhSnork yeah the sellable items still pale in comparison, players have already tested to determine what grinds money fastest and it’s gmax Meowth by far. Also, it’s useless in raids - gmax Meowth’s moves multiple the money prize (and raids don’t give money). Also, you don’t get experience from raids, just candy, so Meowth won’t get experience from being on the bench during raids (nothing will).
Nintendo doesn’t seem to jump onto trends until they can add their own twist or they’re already fairly established. I have a feeling they’re waiting for VR to become more mainstream, at which point they’ll try to innovate it with something more immersive. Which could be cool. I hope whatever they eventually come up with is truly immersive though. I look forward to the day we have tech like haptic gloves that simulate touch. VR is certainly improving but it’s still jarring in many ways due to it only utilizing sight and sound. It’s weird moving around in a 3D space and seeing things you can’t feel.
@thewingedavenger rarely offer films in 3D anymore? I have no idea where you’re from but around here most big movies release in both 2D and 3D (with the 3D option being pricier and only lasting a few weeks so they can cycle more in). There’s constantly 3D movies in theaters. Constantly.
@SmaggTheSmug I’d argue the opposite. Yes, all water starters are 007, but why pick the water starter to turn into James Bond? There is nothing particularly spy-like about water. I’d guess that they wanted a Pokémon inspired by James Bond and decided to use the water starter for it BECAUSE that’s as close as they could get for 007.
@zander_dale I think the idea is a kid who’s a bit of an outcast growing up and gaining confidence, becoming secure in working alone. Something essentially for a good spy. And Inteleon is definitely based on James Bond, given the region inspiration and the fact that Sobble is literally 007 in the Galar Pokedex.
@Expa0 sure, if you start over you can’t get a FREE gmax Meowth again... but gmax Meowth can be found in the wild area like any other gmax (it’s just rare, like any of the non-boosted gmax Pokemon). So it’s not like it’s missable. This is just a nice bonus for early adopters interested in building competitive teams (the money payout with it is insane and you can buy buckets of vitamins with it).
@nhSnork actually it is indeed the fastest way to grind for money. If you redo the Championship Tournament with it holding an amulet coin, you can get 99,999 per battle assuming you use all three gmax moves with it. This is especially nice if you choose to build a team and want to max your EVs out, as they removed the cap for EVs from vitamins, making Meowth money farming the fastest way to do it (one tournament, which is 3 battles, is enough to max a single Pokémon with a Macho Brace). By far that’s more time efficient than selling stuff from the wild area.
Gmax Meowth is super useful for its money farming alone!
Great game but... yeah, the perfect game to make available for a week and then ask people to pay for it. I doubt many players will manage to even unlock the whole cast in a week. It’s a great game but quite grindy and time consuming.
Captain Toad was the type of game you could beat in a week, but this is a different story.
I’ve been thinking of replaying the series and a trilogy would really be coming at the perfect time for me, I’d pay for that. Assuming it’s soon anyways.
@ralphdibny @ChessboardMan @CoastersPaul yeah the source says she had to give up at that point. On the easiest difficulty, there would’ve been another 10 hours of it, but at her current pace her time would’ve been over 24 hours and that was just too much. Heck, I’m impressed and feel nauseous just thinking of pushing my body THAT far!
@Anti-Matter we can only hope someday DDR becomes big again. I feel like the series was best with Max 2 and Extreme, after that it slowly went down in quality (though I never got to try DDR A). I miss being able to go to a local arcade and spending a bunch of time playing that! Or even just playing at home (though the arcade machines were always better).
Dang, was sorta hoping they’d do something with the monster battling from Bomberman, I always loved that feature and would’ve like a full game just for it!
@Heavyarms55 the only thing you could’ve done to make it more obvious you were being sarcastic is literally say “this is sarcasm”. I’m guessing anyone who didn’t catch that though don’t speak English as their first language? Still, sucks how quickly people get worked up and aggressive online, I appreciate the sarcasm.
@Meckus there you have it. Nintendo doesn’t do discounts like that on their games, it was the store that gave you a discount. There’s no point for Nintendo to do a digital double pack on the DLC because it would be the same price anyways. The only reason they had a digital double pack for the games was because they included a couple of free Pokémon. The price was identical to buying them individually.
@Meckus I split a 2-in-1 edition with a friend and we got no discounts, where did you purchase yours?? Either way, to answer your question, the 2-in-1 digital pack was the same price as buying individually, so it’d be irrelevant to have these as 2-in-1; they’re digital only. Nintendo doesn’t offer discounts for their 2-in-1 packs, any discounts would come from retailers.
@nintykid nobody is paying extra for those Pokémon unless they don’t pay any attention, considering it’s already been made very clear the Pokémon are all being added in a FREE update.
@Meckus why would you get the 2-in-1 pack unless you had a lot of money to burn? You’re paying $120 for essentially the same game twice with very minor differences.
Odds are quite high that they had more than 400 ready by launch but were planning this content from long before Dexit began. This likely has nothing to do with Dexit.
@AlexSora89 I highly doubt that this DLC wasn’t being worked on alongside the games themselves. This was always part of the plan and isn’t there entire Pokedex anyways. They held back 200 Pokémon to release alongside their DLC. But you can fit it to your narrative if you want. I’m sure a lot of people will.
People don’t know how to pay attention. These 200 Pokémon are NOT being hidden behind a paywall, they are coming in a free update. You can catch them in the expanded areas or transfer them from Pokémon Home. Same as much of the National Pokédex in any gen.
That tote bag is lovely... thank goodness I’m in the US where that isn’t an option and I can safely get digital without losing out on a preorder bonus (at this time). Getting physical for this game would be a mistake, and I already wish I went digital for Pokémon (given how often I have to switch it in).

@nhSnork doesn’t work on regular trainer battles because you can’t gmax in them. And this game has no elite four analogue, you just gotta do the championship tournament to farm the money (which at least has different trainers every time).
Re: Reminder: Make Sure To Claim Your Gigantamax Meowth In Pokémon Sword And Shield Today
@nhSnork basically, as you said, some loot goes up to 4 digits in sales... gmax Meowth hits 6 digits in a battle. In minutes. Super efficient. 4 digits isn’t much when a single vitamin is 10,000.
Re: Reminder: Make Sure To Claim Your Gigantamax Meowth In Pokémon Sword And Shield Today
Re: 17-BIT Boss Would Love To See Nintendo "Own" The Virtual Reality Space
As long as it’s not a cardboard headset.
Re: 17-BIT Boss Would Love To See Nintendo "Own" The Virtual Reality Space
@thewingedavenger rarely offer films in 3D anymore? I have no idea where you’re from but around here most big movies release in both 2D and 3D (with the 3D option being pricier and only lasting a few weeks so they can cycle more in). There’s constantly 3D movies in theaters. Constantly.
Re: Reminder: Make Sure To Claim Your Gigantamax Meowth In Pokémon Sword And Shield Today
@DFaceG_Rebooted according to https://gameranx.com/features/id/187752/article/pokemon-sword-shield-how-to-earn-99999-cash-per-battle-meowth-money-farming-guide/ there’s three dens it can spawn at (Dusty Bowl, Giant’s Seat, Stony Wilderness). I used that guide to money farm so I assumed it was legit? There’s some gmax Pokémon I’ve yet to see and I’ve been playing since launch too, so I was chalking it up to RNG?
Re: Random: Fans Have Some Fun With Inteleon's New Gigantamax Form
@SmaggTheSmug I’d argue the opposite. Yes, all water starters are 007, but why pick the water starter to turn into James Bond? There is nothing particularly spy-like about water. I’d guess that they wanted a Pokémon inspired by James Bond and decided to use the water starter for it BECAUSE that’s as close as they could get for 007.
Re: Random: Fans Have Some Fun With Inteleon's New Gigantamax Form
@zander_dale I think the idea is a kid who’s a bit of an outcast growing up and gaining confidence, becoming secure in working alone. Something essentially for a good spy. And Inteleon is definitely based on James Bond, given the region inspiration and the fact that Sobble is literally 007 in the Galar Pokedex.
Re: Switch Online Users In Japan Will Soon Be Able To Play Fire Emblem Warriors For Free
@MortalKombat2007 that’s essentially what I was saying. This makes more sense to promote this way than Captain Toad, which is easy to beat in a week.
Re: Reminder: Make Sure To Claim Your Gigantamax Meowth In Pokémon Sword And Shield Today
Re: Reminder: Make Sure To Claim Your Gigantamax Meowth In Pokémon Sword And Shield Today
@AlexSora89 heads up, you can still get gmax Meowth from raids, it’s just very rare. So nothing here is actually missable.
Re: Reminder: Make Sure To Claim Your Gigantamax Meowth In Pokémon Sword And Shield Today
Re: Switch Online Users In Japan Will Soon Be Able To Play Fire Emblem Warriors For Free
Great game but... yeah, the perfect game to make available for a week and then ask people to pay for it. I doubt many players will manage to even unlock the whole cast in a week. It’s a great game but quite grindy and time consuming.
Captain Toad was the type of game you could beat in a week, but this is a different story.
Re: Random: Nintendo Took Down The Official Pikmin 3 Website And The Internet Noticed
I’ve been thinking of replaying the series and a trilogy would really be coming at the perfect time for me, I’d pay for that. Assuming it’s soon anyways.
Re: Fans Keep Designing Animal Crossing Switch Lites And Now We Need One
I’d be even happier if they released AC joycons. I’d finally get a fourth pair!
Re: Believe It Or Not, People Are Speedrunning Ring Fit Adventure
@ralphdibny @ChessboardMan @CoastersPaul yeah the source says she had to give up at that point. On the easiest difficulty, there would’ve been another 10 hours of it, but at her current pace her time would’ve been over 24 hours and that was just too much. Heck, I’m impressed and feel nauseous just thinking of pushing my body THAT far!
Re: Konami Is Developing A Switch-Exclusive Monster-Battling Strategy Game
@Anti-Matter we can only hope someday DDR becomes big again. I feel like the series was best with Max 2 and Extreme, after that it slowly went down in quality (though I never got to try DDR A). I miss being able to go to a local arcade and spending a bunch of time playing that! Or even just playing at home (though the arcade machines were always better).
Re: Konami Is Developing A Switch-Exclusive Monster-Battling Strategy Game
Dang, was sorta hoping they’d do something with the monster battling from Bomberman, I always loved that feature and would’ve like a full game just for it!
Re: Japanese Charts: Pokémon Sword And Shield Scores Eighth Consecutive Week At Number One
Re: Japanese Charts: Pokémon Sword And Shield Scores Eighth Consecutive Week At Number One
@SquareOneMJ *Coalossal sales
Re: Joker Costume Spotted On The Back Of Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore Box Art
@PBandSmelly mainline Persona games are unlikely to ever leave Sony, but I’m pretty sure SMT has a game confirmed for Switch.
Re: Pokémon Sword And Shield Is Getting An Expansion Pass, And It Looks Mighty
@FRANKLIN_BADGE still wrong, you can import any of the 200 returning Pokémon from Pokémon Home.
Re: Guide: Pokémon Sword And Shield Expansion Passes - All You Need To Know, Including New Pokémon
Re: Guide: Pokémon Sword And Shield Expansion Passes - All You Need To Know, Including New Pokémon
Re: Guide: Pokémon Sword And Shield Expansion Passes - All You Need To Know, Including New Pokémon
@nintykid nobody is paying extra for those Pokémon unless they don’t pay any attention, considering it’s already been made very clear the Pokémon are all being added in a FREE update.
Re: Guide: Pokémon Sword And Shield Expansion Passes - All You Need To Know, Including New Pokémon
@Meckus why would you get the 2-in-1 pack unless you had a lot of money to burn? You’re paying $120 for essentially the same game twice with very minor differences.
Re: More Than 200 Old Pokémon Are Being Added To Sword And Shield's National Dex
Everyone in the comments is a developer I see.
Odds are quite high that they had more than 400 ready by launch but were planning this content from long before Dexit began. This likely has nothing to do with Dexit.
Re: Pokémon Sword And Shield Is Getting An Expansion Pass, And It Looks Mighty
@AlexSora89 I highly doubt that this DLC wasn’t being worked on alongside the games themselves. This was always part of the plan and isn’t there entire Pokedex anyways. They held back 200 Pokémon to release alongside their DLC. But you can fit it to your narrative if you want. I’m sure a lot of people will.
Re: Pokémon Sword And Shield Is Getting An Expansion Pass, And It Looks Mighty
People don’t know how to pay attention. These 200 Pokémon are NOT being hidden behind a paywall, they are coming in a free update. You can catch them in the expanded areas or transfer them from Pokémon Home. Same as much of the National Pokédex in any gen.
Re: Speaking Simulator Might Be The Most Bonkers-Looking Switch Game We've Seen Yet
Your game designers were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.
Re: US Retailer Target Briefly Had Yoshi's Crafted World Digital Codes On Sale For Just $1
Oh no... I would’ve loved this.
Re: Animal Crossing: New Horizons Pre-Order Bonuses Appear, And You Have Lots To Choose From
That tote bag is lovely... thank goodness I’m in the US where that isn’t an option and I can safely get digital without losing out on a preorder bonus (at this time). Getting physical for this game would be a mistake, and I already wish I went digital for Pokémon (given how often I have to switch it in).
