In amongst all the new game announcements - Nintendo featured a brief segment during its latest E3 Direct presentation about next week's release, Mario Golf: Super Rush.
While there's plenty to look forward to in the base game, it turns out Nintendo and Camelot will be delivering free updates and content post-release. Here's the official rundown, courtesy of the PR:
"Free updates to the game that include additional courses and playable characters will be released in the future. The fairway is almost open! Pre-orders for the game are now available in Nintendo eShop."
By the looks of it, at least one of the new courses will be a trip to New Donk City from Super Mario Odyssey, and there'll be new characters, too.
What sort of characters and levels would you like to see in the new Mario Golf? Any idea? Will you be picking up this game when it arrives next week? Tell us down in the comments.

Glad to see the days of free updates are back. I remember when PC games had free DLC all the time and "expansions" weren't the price of full games. Now an extra character on smash and their level is 1/6 the price of the game. So it's definitely nice to see that a character and level in this game will be free in comparison.
I'm holding my breath for Captain Rainbow!
Bob-omb Battlefield reimagined as a golf course would be amazing.
They should have done it with the first Mario Party.
I'm still annoyed they announced a new one and didn't offer a single DLC for the thé other.
For Mario Golf, I'm excited, it's been a while since I've played one of the games and have good memories from the 64 version.
All the newest mario spinoffs only use pauline and new donk, what about the cool fork dudes, mexican skull dudes, silly water robots, and Cappy?
@PBandSmelly
Hey any reference to a non-NSMB game is better than nothing at all. cough cough Mario Party cough cough
The ol' moustached tyrannomarius rex running down the fairways in Super Rush would be quite the sight.
This ain't surprising but glad nonetheless. I really want to see K Rool in golf attire though
Im for king k rool
Clouds and airships would be cool. And courses based on the first Mario Bros. Pipes and bricks, Koopa kids!
I really hope this includes regular, 18-hole courses and not just more arenas for the new battle mode that I'm not sure if I like. Mario Gold World Tour on the 3DS had 12 courses at launch, plus 6 you could buy as DLC for a total of 18. This game has a measly 6 courses, which is a very disappointing step backwards. That's one-third the amount of content. I'll probably get the game regardless, but I really hope the free content they're adding will be substantial and make the game actually feel like it's worth the price.
Now I just hope they follow suit with Mario Party! Bring the other old stages back!
Birdo please!
Birdo, Pom Pom, Chain Chomp and maybe Tiny Kong would be great. Bring in some of those lesser-seen characters!
I’m just hoping for plenty of single player action. I love a nice relaxing golf game and this looks like it might be the opposite 😄
Gold Metal Cat Mario is the character we all want.
I thought the initial set of courses looked a bit dull so this news has really made this a probable rather than possible buy for me.
This is starting to shape up well and I am very tempted now....
I figured this was the case based on the eShop listing for it, but confirmation is good nonetheless.
@Not_Soos
Only 6 courses, ooph, that's pretty pitiful. Reeks of Mario Party mind though.
this makes a great game even better. this is going to be one of the most fun golf games ever.
@Rosona Yeah, exactly. This is unfortunately a trend for a lot of newer Switch games: let's add a bunch of un-fleshed-out, extra modes no one asked for and say the game has lots of content, yet neglect to actually include an ample amount of stages. Just trim the fat and give us a little extra lean, Nintendo.
That being said, the other golf modes could still be fun, but I definitely prefer just traditional golfing.
@Cheez Free DLC never went anywhere.
Then I wait for a discount for that game. For 30 or 35 Euro. No full game at release, no buy at full price for me.
@Not_Soos
I like the extra modes in games like Mario Party. Nintendo will never please everyone but please don't act like no one likes these extra modes.
looks good, the more Mario themed courses will be a nice addition to the natural looking ones.
@Dethmunk Right? It's free DLC. Free! It's not like they're withholding content just so they can charge you for it later. It's definitely a full game.
The main issue for me is when Arms and Mario Tennis Aces did this, once they were done with the updates the online community dropped a lot. Not entirely, but it really declines.
@Pikman Same here. It's got my attention now.
that new donk city course looked like a mod now this is MARIO golf
So why the hell do they not put it into the game and release... you know... a COMPLETE game? 6 courses and the amount of characters are laughable for a 2021 release. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004 on the GameCube had 19 (!!) courses, and that was released almost 20 years ago.
I mentioned it already, but I'll say it again: this is not the Camelot that it used to be. Seems like they are forced to shove in a shiny new gimmick with each iteration now... I don't care in the slightest for Speed Golf and am absolutely puzzled that modes like doubles, character matches, skins matches, ring shot, near-pin, coin shoot, club slots etc. all seem to be missing.
I'll probably buy it in a year or so, when the game is actually complete.
Again this feels like an incomplete game that will be finished later.
@Not_Soos Are we sure there aren't more than 6 main courses? Maybe that's all they want to reveal before the game comes out.
I normally don't like Golf but I really would like to try this game. I don't like golfing, but games like Golf Story, Golf with your Friends and Mario Golf add and change enough that it makes me really enjoy it.
Ohhhh, I get it. It’s New York City, but Blackout Crew put a Donk on it.
So this is basically saying [email protected] you all, Mario Tennis players... And going forward, something will have updates if we say so.
@ArmoredGoomba Yeah, we're pretty sure, unfortunately. I'll read you an excerpt from the eShop listing, which you can read for yourself if you want to verify. "Take it slow in Standard Golf and choose from 3-18 holes across 6 different courses that range from lush scenery to windy wilds." So yeah, that seems like a confirmation to me. I did watch the Treehouse footage though, and when they were playing in Story Mode, there was a place labeled on the world map as a snowy mountain area, so that was curious. We haven't seen anything like that yet. Again though, I really hope the DLC will add more for free, but it's hard to say. Knowing Nintendo, I don't think we should get our hopes up.
@lighteningbolt79 I honestly don't know of anyone who enjoyed playing the rafting mode, tabletop games, or co-op board mode more than once or twice, but if you're an exception, more power to you and I apologize if I made an offensive generalization.
@Not_Soos
Well, I do. Funny how that works. It's as if it's not possible to know the opinions of everyone and it's pointless to make a generalisation like that.
@lighteningbolt79 I already said sorry, so I'm not really sure what more I can do. I thought it was a pretty inconsequential thing that I said, but I'm trying to be nice and respect your feelings about it.
So, Mario Golf Super Rush is going to be like Mario Tenis Aces from having additional characters....... COOL, it is awesome when games keep on getting more and more content after its release.
@Cheez hahah what the hell man.
Hi long term game player, game developer, got my first job out of high school in the late 80s because of a Speccy game I programmed:
Just to let you know that your rose tinted glasses might need checking. Let’s list some examples:
-Duke3D had two major updates. One added support for new content and one added new content. The extra content wasn’t sold separately and you’d have to pay more. Base Duke3D was £29.99 and the one with The Birth content was 35. If you had a content pack downloaded from the internet you were flat out of luck if you didn’t have the “support” version of the game. Christ. Dark days.
-Doom 2 came out 10 months after Doom 1 and us all at the time considered it nothing more than an expansion pack yet priced as a full priced game. Not only that but 2 months after Doom 2 they sold a new version of Doom 1 that had the new 4th episode. Dark dark days. Worst case scenario you had to pay for 3 full games just to, at the end of the day, own 2 full games. They didn’t sell their 4th episode stand alone either.
GL Quake had to come with newer copies of Quake. Imagine buying one version and finding out it was the Dos version… you’d have to buy the game again.
These are just 3 of the most influential games of all time too, not like they’re obscure things.
Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider Gold. Gold had new levels but wasn’t sold stand alone.
Unreal Tournament 99 had two releases: normal and GOTY. The GOTY one was full of content (maps, modes, mods) not seen in the base game and weren’t available online for free or paid stand alone.
I just literally hate when people feel the need to fib, to make things up. Just no.
The only two guaranteed free patch forever updates seem to be Minecraft and No Mans Sky. (And by forever I mean a long long time, not actually forever. A day will come where Minecraft for PC will need to be upgraded to Minecraft 2. And I suspect NMS will be the first to go. Devs don’t owe you anything beyond what they promise. If you think you’re entitled to free upgrades for all your games forever then there’s a brain illness going on there because not all games have near infinite tails like those 2 I mentioned. Plus: a lot of the time games are shamed into free future upgrades. Minecraft’s alpha was bad. NMS was notoriously bad. Cyberpunk may well end up with no paid DLC just because they don’t have the good graces with fans to enable that, and all their updates will have to be free so CDPR isn’t completely abandoned by its fans.
@Mynameishello I'm sorry that you have a bad memory or are ignorant of what I shared but you shouldn't call people liars based on either of those. Or maybe you should do some research to disconfirm people before trying to discredit them. Westwood studios would have free DLC on their website. Broodwar was half the price of base StarCraft. I imagine if you were a developer you've heard of Westwood and StarCraft so that should be enough as I didn't state every game ever on pc back in the day had free DLC and lower priced expansions. But needless to say at this point there were plenty of developers that put out free DLC and lower priced expansions. It's nice to see that there's a Nintendo game that has that planned this day in age and isn't charging $5-10 per new map.
I really hope for a tropical isle delfino course with Petey as the playable character, or a haunted hotel course with a playable Gooigi as the dlc character, maybe even a Cat island course with Fury Bowser ad an obstacle where Plessie is the next Golfer lolq
