If you thought Nintendo was done with Super Mario, think again! He's still got some unfinished business with Bowser in the form of one final Super Mario Maker 2 Ninji Speedrun event.
Yes, that's right - the final course designed by Nintendo is here. It'll require you to "run a few laps" around Bowser's Castle and is packed out with tricky gimmicks and more to put your Mario Maker 2 skills to the ultimate test. As usual, it's all about getting the best time you can!
This 20th course will last for a total of two weeks and once this is over, it seems this might just be the last lot of content we see for Super Mario Maker 2 on the Nintendo Switch. This follows on from its final major update which was delivered in April last year.
As you might recall, the final update added a World Maker mode - allowing up to 40 courses to be linked together, and additional power-ups and course parts. Last month, Nintendo also discontinued the online servers in the original Super Mario Maker. Will you be participating in this final Ninji Speedrun event? Leave a comment down below.

I forgot that the Ninji Speedruns were even a thing. They were not advertised much.
For me personally, mario maker 2 will die once dashie uploads the final video for it. Unfortunately that's pretty close...
man i didnt even notice they kept going with the events besides the first one
poor mario... here lies his final whimper
Ninji is a fall guys skin
Have fun with that
Not gonna lie, Nintendo shot this game in the kneecaps and left it to die by requiring their garbage online network for the level upload/download. It clearly fractured the community for it and killed a lot of interest in it. I know they make a lot of money from the NSO for almost no work on their end but I REALLY wish they would either get rid of it or improve it to the level of something like XB Live. They need to stop with this lazy half step crap.
I never really played those. But I guess I should now...
OH MY GOD NO THIS WAS MY FAVOURITE PART OF SMM2 PLEASE NO THIS IS HORRIBLE PLEASE MAKE IT LIKE THE SPLATFESTS AND MAKE THEM RETURN
Nintendo keeps shooting themselves in the foot by discontinuing major events for their games. ARMS had no reason to go on a hiatus before Min Min in Smash, Splatoon 2 really isn't the same anymore with NSO and only returning Splatfests (with the exception of the Super Mario 35th one), and now Super Mario Maker 2 is about to "die" with its speedrun events going away.
Splatoon 2 had the valid reason of setting up for Splatoon 3, but that doesn't necessarily mean it had to come this soon, I feel, ESPECIALLY considering they constantly tried to advertise Splatoon 2 AFTER the Final Fest.
I really wish this game had received more post-release support, there's so many small nitpicks that should really have been adressed, most notably there really isn't any reason why the level creator cannot just freely select the music used in their stage.
" it seems this might just be the last lot of content we see for Super Mario Maker 2 on the Nintendo Switch."
I disagree with this. It might be the last content from Nintendo for the game, yes. But there are still thousands levels being uploaded everyday to the game. And even though I liked the Ninji levels, they aren't that much better than most popular uploaded levels.
forgot about these things, will try to participate..
was still hoping for a final final update wiwth a supermario land look though
@Expa0 put the music that you want on mario and it plays the whole level... 🙄
^Yes, I do know that you can do that with the few tracks they do have on offer in the SFX section but I cannot do any of that with the regular stage music, there's no reason I shouldn't be able to do that with any given music in the game.
So if we happened to not collect all the Ninji costumes... how do we get them now?
I really like Super Mario Maker 2 and I was really looking forward to all of the new course elements being introduced to the game. They did not disappoint from a gameplay perspective and the best levels in Story Mode and online designed levels with and around them beautifully. Story Mode was a really fun single player campaign with a nice variety of courses and mechanics used that also acted as inspiration for your own courses and the best levels and creators online showcased why this concept is executed so well. The charm and creativity of the original is still here and accounted for.
But the course creator in docked mode is an absolute slog to use with bizarre forgettable button commands and difficult to access sub-menus and controlling the interface with an analogue stick is imprecision incarnate and so slow. The course elements also being displayed in a load of wheels while useful in theory and well organised, was a pain to navigate and remember where certain elements were and I would have rather had a more categorised version of the rows of items in the original. I wrestled with it for weeks after launch and leading up to release I held out hope that course design in TV mode would have a clever solution (like a gyro pointer in Captain Toad) to ease the experience but it was a cumbersome pain that left me disappointed especially with none of the game’s updates addressing it. I just gave up on it after a while which killed my anticipation to make levels with all of the new elements and themes. While handheld mode was better, I’d rather use the TV and all of the new sub-menus make the screen real estate claustrophobic and difficult to work with. Definitely a Wii U blockbuster that struggles on Switch.
Not to mention the online multiplayer. I was so hyped for it with ranked and casual modes and having infinite replayability, I felt I’d be playing it all summer long. But in reality I was again let down with one of the worst online gaming experiences I’ve ever had. Gameplay was literally a slideshow and virtually unplayable and I think it set in there and then that NSO was an incredibly primitive and flawed online infrastructure. Such a massive disappointment.
Then the online selection of levels themselves were a mixed bag. Obviously some are troll levels or ones designed by very young children without a grasp of basic level design and spamming as many items and enemies as possible. But the highest-rated courses were fantastic with ingenious ideas and great utilisation of the new and existing elements However, as the game went on the servers became overloaded with these irritating “Refresh” levels, which spam sound effects and visual elements to create a “Zen” experience, and while I’m happy for those who enjoy making and playing them, they are all identical and not fun or interesting to play at all for me. This made it all the more challenging to get around when you consider the unchanged lack of search features with a code system that felt archaic back in 2015 and the fact you can’t search for key words and they didn’t even bother to update it or resurrect the bookmark website was baffling beyond belief. So now all I see online is one type of level I couldn’t care less about with practically no way to find quality levels I haven’t played yet.
Really like the game still but was left disappointed by it in the end and haven’t played in a long time.
@ModdedInkling I think the issue for Super Mario Maker 2 is that it both required constant updates and maintenance while simultaneously being significantly less popular than the port of NSMBU Deluxe.
I'd be shocked if the 2D Mario Team's next new game is SMM3 instead of Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Maker 3 when?
@Deepdoop He may take a break and do another season in the future!
