Thanks for another in-depth Shmup review Tom. I should pick this one up, then!
I will be grabbing the Japanese-only physical release for now - I think I'll be fine attempting to find the button to start a run and do some proper blasting without issues.
@WhiteTrashGuy if you liked KoK, you might wish to consider watching Chasing Ghosts: Beyond the Arcade as well. Lots of fun if you love(d) the arcades!
It's fantastic to see how this modern remake of the original Wizardry has received so much praise. The people who made it clearly put a lot of detail and love into it, and it shows / sounds.
It's cool that the game lets you play like back in the early eighties, if you set the options that way. But this time I'm definitely using the many quality of life improvements. It's a truly fun game.
Unicorn Overlord and Balatro very much deserve to be in this spotlight - I found both of these games to be totally awesome.
The Wizardry remake didn't make the top 50 list at all, alas. That is unfortunate but it's still in my personal top three along with UC and Balatro. <3
Thanks for the detailed review Tom! Unfortunately the game doesn't seem to be available (yet) where I am in Europe, but I guess it's a matter of time before it'll appear in the shop.
Whatever happens I'll be hoping for a physical release in the near future - I love my Cave games that way.
My favourite schmups are Mushi, DoDonpachi DaiOuJou and (non-Cave but totally awesome) Danmaku Unlimited 3. DU3 got me into these games on Switch and now I'm hooked.
Loving the original I would love to see this potentionally great new installment arrive at one point, but at what price we should perhaps wonder, together.
Best of wisdom and good health to the people (especially the devs) working on this.
@SearchingS I agree they are truly great but for me personally I just enjoy Mushi slightly more. It's just such a joy to play, and I love the art and catchy tunes.
Bring on True Death and make it phyisical as well please. Looking forward to playing it!
@Vyacheslav333 Under Night II was and still is excellent indeed! That's a brilliant and great looking fighter on the Switch which I absolutely love to play, and I'd be happy with it winning.
I did not play lots of different 2024-specific Switch games it seems, but for me Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord is my favourite. It's an incredibly well-polished remake of the original game that I also loved - but with all the quality of life improvements that make it fun for just about everyone. It looks and sounds great as well. And even the box art of the physical edition is exactly like it was in the early eighties - they put a lot of love and care in this game and it shows. GOTY!
Unicorn Overlord and Balatro are excellent on Switch for me as well, but are slightly lower on my short list. Still these are awesome games alright.
It really is horrible. I use the store just to keep and check my wishlist for discounts, and look up specific titles if I'm interested in them.
Not interested in the 'hentai' and other stuff that gets thrown in my face. Get your store in proper order already Nintendo. There is no joy in using it.
It's great to have the physical Switch Wizardry box now sitting next to my old Apple II one. I love it how they kept the exact same design.
Lovely game it still is too - but now it comes with lots of quality of life improvements that (optionally) make it more accessible for people new to the old way of crawling dungeons.
@HammerGalladeBro much better I'd say. I use the Real Arcade Pro V Hayabusa myself for my Shmups and fighting / arcade games, and it seems the way to go for me.
Isolation was awesome for me, and I'd love to get this sequel on Switch 2. It's good to be an Alien franchise fan these days, with Romulus, the upcoming TV series and now this.
Being in Europe I've ordered a few physical Cave shmups from there, and it was nice, fast. and not relatively expensive at all.
I grew up in the eighties with lots of crawlers, and I'm totally loving my digital Wizardry on Switch. The physical version will be sitting nicely next to my battered Apple II one soon, I hope.

If one is disturbed about a boob-slider being removed, one should consider a different hobby.
Pre-ordered my cartridge, and I'm looking forward to playing it.

@KayFiOS you're right we wouldn't want to disturb the self-proclaimed "Video Game Player of the Century" !

Re: Advance Wars-Style Game 'Warside' Blasts Onto Switch Early Next Year
Such a shameful rip-off. They didn't even try to come up with a unique visual style, but straight out copied AW's looks to the very pixels.

Re: Feature: 15 Best-Looking Switch Games Of 2024
Unicorn Overlord for me - that art just really pops, wow. <3
As a technical achievement that should have been impossible to actually pull off on Switch: Ace Combat 7, no doubt. It's great.
Love the visual work on Under Night In-Birth II as well!

There should have been no need to make this into a generic computer generated Mega Child fest imho. Oh well.

Re: Wizardry: Proving Grounds Of The Mad Overlord Receives 1.1 Update On Switch
Just made an account (I've been lurking on this cool site for too long) to let you guys know there's a nice physical release coming out in a month.
You can preorder right here on amazon jp (probably other places as well): https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/Wizardry-Proving-Grounds-Overlord-【特典】表裏ジャケット、マニュアル/dp/B0D4V7L9KW on amazon.jp - I assume / hope it will have the english texts...
