I love DQ merchandise due to them being designed by Dragonball's Akira Toriyama (I am Dragon Ball fan). Dragon Quest Sofubi figures are pretty cool, I was collecting them like mad a few years ago.
I have two or three of the Earthbound covers that I don't use... I just keep them as collector's items. I just use a cheap plain black cover for my hobonichi planner. I also bought this other one called the Hobonichi Weeks for work, but have now gone back to the planner version. Love the Hobonichi, I use a fountain pen with a fine point to write in it.
I'm excited to try this out, hope to see a review soon - mainly concern will be about game freezing glitches. If there aren't any major issues, it's definitely going to get added to my Wii U collection.
I have the game and have been playing with the N3DS and enjoying it today. I'm a Metroid fan so I couldn't pass it up. A 7.5 is pretty fair, 8.0 is pushing it a bit, but you do get a pretty smooth, fun, co-op FPS experience in 3D. There is lots to unlock and the game takes itself and the lore pretty seriously. The chibi graphics aren't noticeable much at all during gameplay as the things you're blasting aren't as chibi looking. Enemy AI is pretty good, they dart around and it does require some skill to take them down.
Having Blast Ball as a bonus is nice too, but everyone got Blast Ball for free anyway.
I don't regret buying it and would recommend it. Those Space Pirates aren't going to get blasted on their own.
Also, to those complaining about the controls, I have an N3DS XL and it works great for me with the following config: Config B Options: Gyro Aim when Locked On: ON Invert Y axis: OFF Aim sensitivity: 2 (highest)
All this criticism about Nintendo's treatment of their retro games. We don't really know what's going on behind Nintendo's closed doors. They probably have all hands on deck working on Breath of the Wild and other NX projects. Having a department retcon and improve their retro games is not a priority for them nor should it be. Sega on the other hand, they don't seem to be having much going on there for the last little while. Once a major videogame superpower, the company has really fallen on hard times, releasing middling Sonic games, more-of-the-same Yakuza games and unpopular new IPs such as Rodea. I can't think of any runaway hits from Sega in a long time. I'm sure one of its core strategies is to improve and re-release past hits... no innovation, just trying to milk their past glories.
@AcclaimDev @MakeMyBiscuit I checked eShop tonight and a lot of the 3D Sega games are currently on sale, not only Shinobi and Streets of Rage! For myself, I've made up my mind to get the 3DS Sega Classics cartridge - I think it works out to be a better deal if you factor in the additional games that aren't available on eShop.
@DefHalan I only have Rebirth for the New 3DS and it runs fine. There are no slowdown or frame rate issues with the game itself, but it can and will freeze sometimes despite being patched. When that happens, it is annoying as you will need to restart your N3DS, but I'm glad to say that this is a very rare occurrence. Also, you start at the beginning of the level, not at the beginning of the game. However, you may be better off restarting when that happens as the same glitch may cause the game to freeze again. Before the patch, the game would freeze all the time and it was pretty much broken and impossible to recommend to anyone.
For games like The Binding of Isaac, where you can do quick play sessions for 10-15 minutes, I personally prefer to play them on the New 3DS over Wii U. Binding of Isaac is perfect for short bursts of playing.
I have read that the Wii U release also had freezing glitches and I'm not sure if it was ever patched.
@kevfrei Sorry it doesn't work for you, but The Binding of Isaac works fine on my N3DS XL. The game used to freeze a lot, but things got a lot better after the patch was released.
@Handsomistic15 @Dpullam @Shiryu I agree Streets of Rage is great, but the 2 player was really choppy the last time I tried to play it and the game becomes nearly unplayable with two player co-op.
I had an urge to buy this last night, but then dusted off and played ZombiU instead and was able to scratch that FPS itch... got further than I ever did too!
I'm going to be buying this day one for sure. Whatever the reviews, I'm sure it will be a lot of fun. I'll be starting with Kunio, of course, then work my way through the roster.
Can someone please confirm that the 3D Sega games Shinobi and Streets of Rage are actually on sale? They are currently regular priced still on the Canadian eShop.
I agree with DEMISE re: the copyright issues. No one should feel 'sad.' It comes as NO surprise this got taken down as soon as it did.
Having said that, this is probably a great resume or portfolio for the fan who created AM2R to get some publicity or recognition and he could probably get a job for a game company developing retro 16 bit games. And in the end, he CREATED something; he is an artist and no one can ever take that away from him.
Hitman Go and Tomb Raider Go aren't proper Hitman and Tomb Raider games. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Pokemon Rumble and Pokemon Shuffle aren't real Pokemon games in the traditional sense as well. Plenty of examples of this for every gaming franchise (Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Halo, to name but a few). "Metroid" and "Samus" is what I would call a media franchise. And this release looks pretty good.
Everyone who calls themselves a Nintendo fan here plays chibi games. Mario, Zelda all are 'SD' type characters. Zelda changes styles between games and sometimes you get a 'chibi' Link and sometimes you get a more 'realistic' Link. The venom aimed towards this game I think is very unfair, and it kind of saddens me and makes me feel bad for the developers.
Sales-wise, a better week than last, but I own all the games that are on sale. Everyone should check out the Resident Evil and Ace Attorney games. I'd also give a recommendation to Sadame and Rage of the Gladiator if you have a few extra bucks kicking around.
Opening track for me at the title screen... it sometimes gives me chills! I remember seeing my friend play it for the very first time (he was using the red and white Famicom). Left such an impression on me that I never forgot those opening lines of music and I got to play it again myself a couple of years later.
We shouldn't care what the game is called so much. Almost everyone here knows what the core game is about. Blast Ball isn't the main game. You either like the game or you don't.
It looks like a cool game that I'd like, shooting and killing aliens with squad mates (most likely my sons and me). I like that the game takes place in the Metroidverse, a universe I've frequented before and familiar with.
About the complaints about the chibi look... okay so, I DIDN'T notice the chibi look at all during game play with Blast Ball. My eye was on the ball and nailing targets and it was fun once I got used to controls and figured out how to deflect and bank shots like a billiards ball.
We had complaints about the chibi look with Wind Waker back in the day. Gundams can be Super Deformed, and Super Robots Taisen is considered one of the best robot RPGs out there, we've had chibi representations of Mario, Final Fantasy characters, we've had Samus fight 'chibi' type characters like Ness in games like Smash Brothers, so I don't think it's a big deal and I say give the game a chance.
Yikes. Not even any decent sales going on... Think I may visit the local EB Games or used game store this weekend and see if there's any used games that may be worth picking up.
For the regular hard core N fans here, it doesn't matter, and we may even think it's a useless campaign, but this advertising campaign could still help Nintendo raise awareness of some of their 3DS line up to those who are not hardcore gamers. And here I constantly read complaint after complaint that N doesn't do enough marketing...
I'm probably going to grab Sadame finally and Ninja Battle Heroes. Both games have gotten strong recommendations from other regular NintendoLifers here.
I want to see a review on Gotta Protectors first, but definitely interested in it!
@james_mueller I like those names, they're cool sounding!
But people have named their kids way worse things than Pokemon, I have encountered some really bizarre stuff in my work (someone named after a day of the week). Sometimes a last name is used in conjunction with the first name to make an even stranger name! Like the parent was drunk or thought it would be funny when they did it...
But please, everyone don't name your kid Jigglypuff.
Names should have meaning, in my opinion. Pikachu... pika is sparkle or shining, chu is the squeaking sound a mouse makes... well if you want your kid's name to mean "Sparkling Squeak," now you can.
Demos are good, helps potential customers make an informed decision. I have bought many games after trying out their demos. One not mentioned yet is Code Name: STEAM which I bought based on how much fun I had with the demo.
On the other hand, playing demos have also sometimes given me enough of a fix to help me resist buying an actual game itself, including Legend of Dark Witch, Pocket Jockey and Rhythm Heaven Megamix (well, the price felt way too high for a digital only release). I think these were games I would likely have bought based on reviews and my interest in them alone, so in these cases, the demos had the opposite effect on me - after enjoying the demos for a while, the desire to own the game was out of my system.
As for Blast Ball, I think it's a demo done right as you don't actually play a mission in the game, but the demo does get you used to the controls. If reviews are okay, I'll be picking up multiple copies of the game on day one.
I agree with dronesplitter, a negative review from me as well. It was on sale and I had itchy fingers one night. An impulse purchase I regretted later. Oh well.
I wonder if this game was part of Nintendo's "Quality of Life" initiative. I'm hearing news on Pokemon GO here in Canada daily, but some of the news is focusing on negative, warnings about how accounts can be hacked and that the game drains the crap out of your battery and can also use up your data and you could get a shock at the end of the month when you receive your phone bill...
Working for a corporation, I know it is important to watch what you say even when you're out on your 'own free time.' You want violent, steroid pigs, check out Dark Horse comics' gritty OINK series, that was an awesome, nihilistic comic book.

Outrun 3D is a must have.

The funds needed option has been there for a long time now.
I also hated how they used to make you buy chunks of credit before in the past and I still have money left sitting there in my Wii eShop credit!
The 3D Sega games that are on sale appear to not be available on the Sega 3D Classics cart, so I may need to pick them all up this week.

Solid recommendation for Cave Story and Binding of Isaac from me. Especially Binding of Isaac which I still pick up and play every so often!
Re: Axiom Verge Heading to the Wii U eShop on 1st September
@Hordak IMHO, 7.9 actually isn't bad for a 2D indy game. I love the Giger like visuals. I can't wait to pick this up!
Re: Axiom Verge Heading to the Wii U eShop on 1st September
Lots of praise have been heaped on this game... not just on this site. 5 star review on Giantbomb, 8 on Gamespot, 7.9 on IGN.
