In the earlier days of gaming, sidescrolling beat 'em ups were far more common than nowadays, with classics such as Double Dragon and River City Ransom regularly lighting up TV screens. Though this genre has since become fairly niche, it's certainly not dead, as evidenced by the upcoming River City: Tokyo Rumble. We loved what we've seen of it so far, and now Natsume has gone ahead to introduce the cast of playable characters for the anticipated 3DS game.
It seems like this will certainly be a game targeted towards fans, based on comments from Natsume's President/CEO, Hiro Maekawa:
We're excited to be able to deliver such a diverse cast of characters for River City fans. We know that a lot of River City fans have been waiting to play as some of their series favorites in English for a long time now, so we can't wait to hear what series fans and newcomers alike think of the game and its eclectic cast of characters.
As for the characters, here they are in all their glory:
What do you think? Will you be picking this up? Who do you think you'll be playing as the most? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Should be fun, I liked Street Gangs
A fighting game based on the Glaswegian soap River City would have been far more entertaining.
A missed opportunity.
I can't wait for this one. I've been in the mood for A mash up for a while now....
When is this coming out officially?
And there is no such thing as 'a thug with a heart of gold'.
MIsuzu is my spirit animal
@HappyMaskedGuy Yes there are. http://www.cracked.com/article_19393_7-ruthless-criminals-who-turned-good-when-nobody-was-looking.html
@happymaskedguy what about bone thugs n harmony? They made "Murda Mo" but still preach a spiritual message in their international hit "Crossroads"
@ziffy If I kill a man, then cuddle a puppy, am I being unfairly judged then?
Sweet.
@KFlow325 Like Tupac.
Man did that guy like to contradict himself.
Finally! They didn't localize the names!
Looking awesome definitely a pick up and Randy for me you can't beat abit of Double Dragon.
@HappyMaskedGuy Agreed. I was logging in just to say that. No such thing as a thug with a heart of gold.
I will buy this
My only reaction right now is that there are....a lot of playable characters? Are they playable all the way through, or just "team-ups?"
Best I've seen in a while.

hopefully september
This takes me back. Back to a time where the character art hardly looks like their in-game character, Misako especially.
I cant wait for the game
Sweet! A nice treat for retro fans!
@arrmixer some online articles i read about this game say a September release for North America and Europe.
man September is gonna be a great month for 3DS owners like myself with all these upcoming 3DS game releases for it, this game included.
@Ninten-san
I think you mean the opposite. The localized names were the ones appearing in River City Ransom (aka Street Gangs). These are the Japanese names that are in all of the Kunio-kun games.
But I'm happy, I've always thought of him as Kunio anyway. And I just can't wait to get my hands on this. September is already a good looking month for the 3DS, so I hope the release date gets narrowed down soon.
Also, I read this is going to be $29.99 on release, though I can't remember where... Seems like a fair price, the only other retail beat-em-up on 3DS I remember was Code of Princess, and that started retail at 39.99 if I'm not mistaken. Of course I waited and got it for dirt, but this game here is a day one purchase for me; I've had my eye on River City Tokyo Rumble since the first utterance of localization.
@HappyMaskedGuy If you kill yes. Killing and murder have different legal definitions. They can overlap. Especially with negligence. If you are a soldier and kill. If you killed in self defense. If you killed to keep another from harm you have a good chance of being justified in court. If you were to commit pre-meditated murder that would be a different story. Murderers can still hold puppies. Dogs only care about who trats them best
Growing up in inner-city california where he did I would expect him to have been as conflicted. With the streets telling you 1 thing but your conscience telling you another. It would have been no different if he had been born in a trailer park. Drug abuse and contracted diseases are as high and higher in trailer parks with meth and heroine being rampant and expanding to suburbs. Growing up poor is terrible.
@ziffy waw, thanks for a genuinely interesting comment.
I suppose the vast majorty of people who are poor are good people in bad circumstances. By then again, not all poor people turn to crime...
@tankymctankus @CUBANEWYORKER
thank you
@Ryu_Niiyama
yeah definitely not at the same time
@HappyMaskedGuy You are welcome
"I suppose the vast majorty of people who are poor are good people in bad circumstances. By then again, not all poor people turn to crime..." Well said.
I'm going to be buying this day one for sure. Whatever the reviews, I'm sure it will be a lot of fun. I'll be starting with Kunio, of course, then work my way through the roster.
So, is this the localization of the very first 3DS Kunio game (so, basically, a Kunio-Kun-ized version of Renegade) or a brand-new one?
This one is mandatory for me.
@ziffy Okay, so the dictionary definition of a thug is 'a violent person, especially a criminal'
Also historically, thugs were a group of Indian robbers and assassins who waylaid and strangled their victims, usually travellers. They were oppressed by the British in the 1830's.
I dunno about you, but that for me settles it lol.
In my own opinion, thugs can be conflicted, yes. But a heart of gold? I don't think so.
Thanks for the enlightening conversation
Is it just me, or does Shinji look a bit like Kuwabara from Yu Yu Haskusho?
@HappyMaskedGuy
actually thats not true
@HappyMaskedGuy Remember that a lot of gangs and organized crime syndicates got their starts basically policing neighborhoods that the actual authorities would leave to rot.
They just policed them in an extremely corrupt and criminal fashion..... similar to how many of the actual authorities worked in those time periods.
And in the case of fiction (like this game) watch Yu Yu Hakusho. The main two characters are thugs with hearts of gold.
@HappyMaskedGuy You are welcome for the conversation.
@Roam85 That is true. With Italian mobs they were absolute criminals. Eventually some of them took their crime to legitimate business leaving the mob and becoming politicians.
