It's that time, once again, for the North American Nintendo Download Update. This week brings another retro Pokémon game to the Wii U Virtual Console, while there are some new download games to consider on both the home console and 3DS. Throw in a couple of demos and some discounts and you have this week's offering, so let's get to it.
Missed the European Nintendo Download Update details earlier in the week? Turn that frown upside down, the information you need is still right here.
Wii U eShop
Dragon Skills (Joindots, $7.99 / CAD$9.99) - A title that takes its inspiration from the classic Brick Breaker formula, in this case you paddle a ball back and forth that has an ever-growing tail, with bonuses piling up the longer you survive. Though it has its merits, we considered this to have a few notable flaws in our Dragon Skills review.
Overworld Defender Remix (Stereo Chromatic LLC, $5.99) - Described as an arcade shooter on its game page, this also supports co-op with the use of both the GamePad and a Wii Remote. We know little else due to a dearth of videos and information online, though we suspect it will draw comparisons to Asteroids. We'll check it out in a review.
Wii U Virtual Console
Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia (Nintendo, $9.99) - Sales figures suggest that many who enjoy the main series 'mon games don't jump into the various spin-offs. Pokémon Ranger likely falls into this category; though players in North America have been able to try the original for a little while on Wii U, now we have a follow-up which we regard as a '1.5' entry. You use the stylus to befriend and battle Pokémon as the main hook, and we gave it a modest recommendation in our review.
Wii U eShop Demo
Just Dance 2017 (Ubisoft, free)
Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts
Beatbuddy (Threaks, $3.99 until 8th August, normally $8.99)

Star Wars Pinball (Zen Studios, $4.99 until 18th August, normally $9.99)
Midnight 2 (Petite Games, $1.59 until 25th August, normally $1.99)
Jones on Fire (Joindots, on discount until 18th August)
SDK Paint (HullBreach Studios, on discount until 10th August)
Defense Dome (HullBreach Studios, on discount until 10th August)
Steel Rivals (nuGAME, $4.99 until 25th August, normally $6.99)
3DS eShop
Stickman Super Athletics (CoderChild, $2.49 / CAD$3.19) - Well timed to tap into the upcoming Rio Olympics, this looks like a rather simplistic take on familiar events like the 100m sprint, cycling and swimming; we'll see whether it's worthy of a podium place in a review.
3DS Demo
Style Savvy: Fashion Forward (Nintendo, free)
3DS eShop Temporary Discounts
Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures ($4.99 until 9th August, normally $9.99)
ASH (CIRCLE Entertainment, $2.79 until 25th August, normally $3.99)

Not a great selection this week.
ouch!!!
way to go BIG N (
Might get the Pokemon Ranger game but other then that nothing else.
Boo
kee-ripes. how many more months of drought.
I'm trying to hold back but it's hard not to rant. Oh and on a side note, My Nintendo Rewards digital games like Wario 3, Metroid 2 and Super Mario Bros 3 will be staying up until October 1st. Incredible. I don't expect new ones before then.
Don't worry guys, that NX launch in holiday 2017 is only about a year+ away.
@majinx07 there was a video about why nobody could find ditto in p-go and they cited that game as a clue to why. he was disguised as something else in that game - or another p-ranger game, i dunno.
Garbage week, as usual.
Really happy to see the style savvy demo but would be happier if the game itself came out this week! Why the long wait?! It's been out almost a year now in Europe! HMPH!
More Pokemon!
Not holding my breath for Overworld Defender Remix. Seriously, developers should be required to release at least three screenshots, 'game box' art and a trailer.
Style Savvy demo for me to tide me over until the game releases in 2 weeks
They really need to ramp up Virtual Console releases for 3DS, this is embarrassing
.
I want Castlevania IV
Just the Pokémon: Pair Art Set, I can't resist that artstyle. Would be nice as wall decals (or even stained glass windows).
Well it's better than Europe's
No more TurboGraffix16? Going back to sleep then.
Wow...another week of let downs.
Turbografx? then nothing for me
Where does everyone who complains about a slow week find the time to play the amount of good games they wish were released weekly on this service?
@SMEXIZELDAMAN This might be a valid question if all those good games were released, they weren't so no one can answer it.
It's as ugly as the Europe week
@XCWarrior Remember the drought the last few years of the Wii's life? Remember how everyone said "they are working on Wii U games"? Remember how the Wii U launched with very little?
My point is, don't expect the NX to be droughtless or to launch with a great library. I am sure we will get a 2D HD launch title though.
@SMEXIZELDAMAN Seriously, does anyone here have a backlog?
@Mega_Yarn_Poochy I do, going back to GBA games I can play on my DS Heavy.
I will get the Style Savvy demo. I loved the previous game.
Nothing for me this week. Back to Monster Hunter Generations!!
Awwwww yes, Style Savvy 3 demo! Finally!!
I so love how Nintendo almost never puts one of its own games up for sale.
A weak week!
The Style Savvy demo and home menu themes for me
Blast Ball demo is the only thing I've picked up in five weeks now, and it was really not good.
Feels like Nintendo is just coasting until the new system, and I don't like it.
Saving my money for Tadpole Treble next week!
@Tops
Do you like drawing circles? If so, this is GOTY for you!
@Crono1973 Great point. Look forward to a steady stream of Nintendo games again sometime in 2019! (Is that realistic enough for you?)
Yuck.
Who is in charge of myNintendo. Who thought it was a good idea to extend some of the stuff a month longer? Jesus give me something to spend my coins on.
MyNintendo is a waste of time
Absolute garbage. Way to go, Reggie; another failure.
Wow! 68% voted "nothing for me" at the time I wrote this.
This really was a weak, weak week.
>.>'
just when i recently have a little over $20 Eshop balance to spend and we get nothing this week. lousy. i guess i'll finally take a look at some DSIWare games i may or may not consider getting. any suggestions guys (this is the 1st time that i'm diving into the DSIWare game section of the Eshop)?
didn't Mega Man X got released in Europe/UK recently? i was kind of expecting it to come over to the NA 3DS Eshop by now. what gives Capcom?
Nothing for me this week at least from nintendo's eshop. Will be looking in to some xbox one games and psn games.
What a terrible week, and I was hoping something cool would come out in time for my birthday next week. Ah well, it won't be a 3DS game I'd be buying for my present then.
@CUBANEWYORKER there's a shantae game that's DSi ware only I believe. If you're into that sort of thing.
Edit: Just looked it up, it's Shantae: Risky's Revenge, and apparently there's a Director's Cut version out now so you can get it on Wii U or PS4, and X1 I'm assuming.
I think its silly the way people constantly whine about nothing interesting. cmon people you cant expect every week to be a winner. Also with these Disney 3DS themes I think Wreck it Ralph and Big Hero 6 should be added too
@Mega_Yarn_Poochy I am guessing the concept of backlog doesnt exist to a lot of these people
So what exactly is the appeal of Pokemon Ranger? It always just seemed like drawing circles really fast around Pokemon, but there has to be something more for people to like it.
@BlueNitrous you "capture" (you don't keep them like in the mainline games) those Pokemon so that you can use there abilities to clear environmental hazards such as putting out fire with a water type or smashing rocks/moving heavy items with a fighting type. You can also use their abilities when attempting to capture other Pokemon.
Edited for spelling
@CUBANEWYORKER if you want an old school platformer ala Mega Man I recommend Dark Void Zero. It's made by Capcom and is a real gem. Another that's pretty neat is Dragon Quest Wars.
Rough week, no doubt about it. I guess that means we can all save money for upcoming Fall games. I'm ready for DQ7...
How about bringing over the missing Star Wars Pinball tables?!
@XCWarrior No need to be sarcastic, Nintendo can't keep up this gen and they won't be able to next gen either. HD is more time consuming. If they don't get some serious third party support (not talking about indie support) then we will be drip fed next gen too. Expect more 2D games on your shiny new HD console.
People just never learn, every end of gen cycle looks like this for Nintendo with people thinking the effort is going into the next gen and then comes the weak launch and the drought. People forget though before the end of the gen and the cycle starts over.
Really?!? Pokemon again on Wii u vc?? Good lord NOA you suck!!😡
I knew Nintendo had pretty much confirmed they weren't going to even try for the rest of the year, but I didn't expect it to be this bad. Where are the VC games people are actually asking for? Nobody wants the Pokemon Ranger games, come on.
@business-scrub They go out of their way to give us the worst games too. Instead of Pokémon Heart Gold or Soul Silver, we get Pokémon Ranger. Most companies try to release products that people want, Nintendo seems to not even care what people want.
@7yL3r8
Risky's Revenge Director's Cut is also on PC (Steam) and i already have it in there but thanks anyway for the suggestion.
Star Wars Pinball for me but where are the rest of the tables on sale like the UK got? Why is it we sell more consoles but they get better things like Fatal Frame, 2 waves of Selects, SteamWorld and Fast Racing Neo on disc, and now all of these pinball sales. Grr...
@7yL3r8 Dark Void Zero is also on PC (Steam) and i don't think it's all that well received to a lot of people.
never heard of Dragon Quest Wars before and i never knew that Intelligent Systems even made a Dragon Quest game for Square Enix, i'll see if it's any good or not. thanks for mentioning it to me.
@7yL3r8
it looks like Dragon Quest Wars is more of a multiplayer centric kind of game.
problem with it is that i don't think you can even play it online anymore (didn't Nintendo already shut down Nintendo Wifi some time ago?).
@CUBANEWYORKER yeah it's more of a multiplayer game...sorry forgot about Ninty's Wii/DS servers being shut down. The thing about the DSi shop is that for pretty much every game on there there's a version somewhere else or they just aren't value compared to some indie games you can get now. The only other one I can recommend is PiCTOBiTS or the Mario vs Donkey Kong game if you like puzzle games. That's literally the only other games I've ever played DSi ware wise.
@Li_Bae Europe is just as bad.
can we have wild world now NoA?
Would it kill them to add to the 3DS VC?
Oh joy, another spambot...-.-
@CUBANEWYORKER ..a tower defence and a Star Fox like game are a couple of my favorites..

https://www.nintendolife.com/reviews/2010/06/x_scape_dsiware
@CUBANEWYORKER mega man x2 has been released in japan
@business-scrub That's not true, and you know that. There are plenty of people who wanted the Pokemon Ranger games.
Now, as to why they didn't launch all 3 of them on the same week is beyond me.
I always come check to see if there's a decent sale on the 3DS eshop.... there never is
Another disappointing week with no Secret of Mana. Nintendo knows how to disappoint us every Thursday morning. Bring us Secret of Mana for Wii U dammit! Wish I had an email address for Fils-Aime so I could tell him what games we want released on American VC instead of the same crap they've been pushing out week after week. Seriously SoM has been out for Japanese VC for over two years, bring it to the US FFS !!!!!!!
can anyone confirm to me whether releasing something like f-zero gx would take next to zero effort? i mean, doesn't the wii u contain a wii, which contains a gamecube?
it just seems so evil of them.
Wow. yet another home run week for Nintendo.
........and another PASS while I spend my gaming cash elsewhere.
Initially I wasn't planning to get anything but I decided to snatch up the Star Wars pinball while it was on sale. I was tempted before but never $10 tempted.
@SavageGM I agree. I was expecting they would recycle games once a month like they did on club Nintendo.
Now this is a great example. A lot of times when there is at least one classic or something kinda exciting people will post garbage week, nothing etc.
No, THIS is an an example of garbage week, nothing etc.
Yikes. Not even any decent sales going on... Think I may visit the local EB Games or used game store this weekend and see if there's any used games that may be worth picking up.
Eh, I was planning to get Star Fox Zero soon, anyway.
EDIT: Actually, I think I'll also want Star Wars Pinball.
Style Savvy Demo FTW! That's a game I need to try before I buy...
@Mega_Yarn_Poochy No.o.o.........
http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198096332366/
I have enough games to last me 2 years straight since I am going to college. Backlog is an understatement. But that is the case with anyone that has Steam ;P.
Not to mention I still have WWHD, DKTF, Pikmin 3, TWEWY, etc.
@Manjushri Because there are a lot of people who have something called a backlog. In fact there have been a lot of eShop games I have wanted to play but I have not got around to buying them yet. You people need to learn to stop acting so damn self entitled
Also to all of you complaining about the lack of VC games have you ever heard of this thing called priority. Right now Nintendo's priority is likely prepping for NX not rereleasing past games. Also have any of you ever considered the hoops they likely have jump through renewing all the licenses for the third party games
@Manjushri I think this week is decent for NA, 1+ Wii U VC games per week is my expectation on the VC front and NoA did that this week with the Pokemon Ranger game. The EU situation however has been appalling for the last few months where there has generally been NO Wii U VC games.
@IceClimbers I'm not sure what you're talking about... it's a widely known fact that the Pokemon Ranger games didn't sell a single copy. Not one. Ever.
anyone knows what happened to Overworld Defender Remix? and why its not available? i was looking forward for that one...
@Manjushri Its obvious you have no understanding of what goes into making VC games happen in the first place. They cannot simply put em on the eShop at the snap of a finger. On top of renewing the licenses for all the third party games they also likely have to code and test the game to make sure it runs smoothly.
Also how exactly do you know what NXs launch will be like. Judging by their recent statements its seems like they are going to ensure it will have a good launch
Stickman Olympics is fun for a few .minutes. chasing online high scores is really kind of fun. Im currently 3rd in the world on 400m hurdles everything else I'm like 20th. I'm ranked 13th overall for high score. Kind of a nice cheap but it's just a 6 or 7 event game. Not much to it. At least it's super cheap. Chasing online high scores is a lot of fun.
@Manjushri I think you need to take a chill pill. I dont work at Nintendo. I just have an understanding of common business sense. something a lot of you people seem to lack. Also the opinion of the people here doesn't necessarily reflect the majority. Again you are not thinking of priorities. What do you think is more important to Nintendo at this moment? Preparing for NX or re releasing a bunch of old games?
pristine week
