With the start of another week we have the European Nintendo Download Update details, giving us the heads up on what treats to expect. Highlights this week include a puzzle adventure game with some potential on Wii U, an enjoyable Wii download and a couple of SNES Mega Man titles on the New 3DS Virtual Console. Beyond that there a few other interesting download-only arrivals, two demos and a lot of discounts, so let's get to it.
Wii U eShop
Frankenstein - Master of Death (Joindots, €7.99 / £5.99) - This is another puzzle / object finding title with a focus on storytelling, seemingly similar in approach to the surprisingly good Dracula's Legacy. You're in the role of Victor Frankenstein (the real Frankenstein, not the monster!), and we're inclined to be optimistic about this one based on the quality of its predecessor. We'll bring you a review soon.
Mortar Melon (Nitrolic Games, €5.00 / £4.49 ) - A physics-based title in which you fling a watermelon through multiple tricky stages, riffing on ideas that have been a major success in recent years. In our review we felt this one lacked creativity, while also suffering from some notable control issues.
Plenty of Fishies (Nitrolic Games, €5.00 / £4.49 ) — This is a collection of modes and challenges for single players or groups up to five, with bite-sized challenges the order of the day. Due to some serious issues with performance, however, we were exceptionally critical of this game in our review.
360 Breakout (nuGAME, €7.00 / £6.00) - This one promises an 'out of the ordinary' Breakout experience, with the name suggesting a 360 degree challenge. With solo play being accompanied by two player VS and co-op, this tries to offer some variety to the classic formula; we'll see whether it's a breakout success in a review.
Wii U Virtual Console
Super Paper Mario (Nintendo, €19.99 / £17.99) - With its successor on the way this October, this rather clever Wii title makes its bow on the eShop. Unique in its adoption of both 2D and 3D perspectives, it also has an entertaining story and a fairly lengthy campaign. We were big fans in our original Super Paper Mario review.

Reptilian Rebellion (Herrero, €1.49 / £1.29 until 1st September, normally €1.99 / £1.79)
3DS eShop
Ambition of the Slimes (CIRCLE Entertainment, €5.00 / £4.79) - A turn-based RPG in which you control a variety of slimes, rather than fighting them as you would in a certain classic series. The slimes have various types, strengths and weaknesses that need to be exploited for success. We'll get working on a review.
Doll Fashion Atelier (Teyon, €4.99 / £4.49) - Teyon is a publisher that's never away from the eShop for long, and returns with a dress-up game in which you can style a variety of dolls across five different themes; naturally you can share your creations on Miiverse, too. With that said, we weren't fans of this in our Doll Fashion Atelier review.
3DS Retail Download
Teddy Together (Nintendo) - A friendship game designed particularly for young children, you care for and interact with a teddy bear that's come to life. Released in Europe back on 1st July, this listing in Nintendo's press release is for its arrival in Australia / New Zealand on 11th August.
New Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console
Mega Man X2 (Capcom, €3.99 / £3.59 until 25th August if you own Mega Man X3, otherwise €7.99 / £7.19) — While spin-offs aren't always a success, the early X games in the Mega Man series certainly captured the imagination. With a move-set and approach somewhat different to the "classic" series, this sequel is a rather good follow up to its X predecessor; we enjoyed this one in our Wii U Virtual Console Mega Man X2 review, and will take another look on New 3DS.
Mega Man X3 (Capcom, €3.99 / £3.59 until 25th August if you own Mega Man X3, otherwise €7.99 / £7.19) — A game that represented the end of an era as Mega Man departed from Nintendo hardware to other platforms. As a farewell it's perhaps disappointing, and we were critical of it in our Wii U Virtual Console Mega Man X3 review.

That's everything for the European Nintendo Download Update this week - let us know what you're planning to download in the poll and comments below.

Super Paper Mario like most other Wii eShop games is way overpriced. I can buy it physically for half that price. Nothing for me this week as I own SPM and already have anything of interest in the discounts section. It's a much better week for 3DS owners.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE That's Nintendo's ridiculous stock Wii games price.
Anyway, what a load of nothing this week (as is becoming the norm).
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Yes, you are right. Since Super Paper Mario is a Nintendo Select game, you can pick a less expensive retail version, easily!
By the way: It is slightly disturbing that you always edit your post after the first statement is just a short sentence. Is it so important to be the first on the page?
Very depressing week - the WiiU discounts are mostly for 4 year old games!!
@Pahvi It would be better to have TTYD as a VC-title
Super Paper Mario for me I guess ^^.
I thought maybe Super Paper Mario would come out during Gamescom similarly to Xenoblade Chronicles, but sure I don't mind getting Super Paper Mario one week earlier .
@Tsurii You are kidding, aren't you? I would pay a lot more than the usual Wii-VC-price for having TTYD on my WiiU.
@Tsurii
Do you hear that distant rumble? That's the sound of an angry horde racing to defend TTYD.
Well I won't be getting Super Paper Mario, did not like it one bit.
Good week for me, because i got 3DS only 3 weeks ago.
I'm getting both Resident Evil games for 3DS.
Last week i bought 12 games for 3DS.
@Chandlero It's slightly disturbing that you care. But jump on Benson's bandwagon why don't you. And you're a hypocrite anyway, because your post is edited as well. SPM jumped out at me and then I commented on the rest. Arrest me!
Is Return to Popolocrois worth getting for that price? Read a lot of good things about this game...
@BensonUii Get a life you sad troll. I love that it annoys you so. I think I'll edit it again and I've edited this post too. It's so obvious why it annoys you.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Yes, I edited my post since I wanted to remove typos. I really don't see why you are so angry...
@Chandlero You didn't just remove typos. You added in your argument baiting remark about me.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Oh yeah. I had to. I wrote that you were right about SPM being overpriced but then you changed the whole post and said most Wii eshop games are way overpriced. I don't want to agree on that...
@Tsurii Edited post number 4 started this. But you are right, they started it over nothing.
@Chandlero See you lied. Who the hell cares that I edit my posts? You do and a select few others!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Yes, I had this discussion 25 years ago: In kindergarten!
Mega Man Legacy Collection in discount is nice, also maybe it would be about time to get Hakuoki: Memories of the Shinsengumi?
Super Paper Mario is cool, but the VC is always quite a lot too pricy. Would maybe get it if the launch discounts were back for Wii VC.
Capcom is having a sale, and with all Monster Hunter games existing, i think its weird that not even one is on sale.
Oh look, SF4 costing the same as the SF virtual console games. <- This observation is probably irrelevant.
I might pickup legacy collection on 3DS. Still bummed it didn't get a physical release over here.
OK, question time: If I get Virtue's Last Reward am I going to be thoroughly confused because I haven't played the first game in the series? I've been wanting to play them for a while but I've had a hard time tracking down a copy of 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors at a decent price.
sigh if only i had a New 3DS
Super Paper Mario n maybe Megaman Legacy for me this week.
@Tsurii : True, but they could put the older on sale.
Its only 3 weeks since i bought 3DS. Already owned MH 3 U on Wii U for years thou.
Anyway. Getting both RE games on 3DS sale. Finished one of them on Wii U, but its a must own on 3DS anyway.
I might get Super Paper Mario. I'm kinda annoyed, I had it and sold it, now I want it again. 😎
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I bought my copy for £4.68 physical copy pre owned
@Ikramali I know, it's mental right? Nintendo's pricing structure is so messed up. There's been nothing for weeks and you'd think they might throw us a bone as loyal customers and give us a discount at least. €20 for most Wii games is ludicrous. They do very little work if any, it's just the game dumped into Wii mode and run from there. Or another example, asking for €10 for DS games, again madness. They're gimped both in terms of the visual aspect and any multiplayer features are completely chopped off. If I really wanted I could easily download them onto my DS for nothing and I'd have multiplayer and complete portability.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE it is mental but than again you can see why more and more are going to Sony or Microsoft systems.
Most of my games are physical I buy a lot of games as my kids play differ
Most argue Nintendo are more towards younger gamers I disagree
As a parent I just can't afford Nintendo game prices yet I buy games digitally for our ps4 for my kids
@BensonUii Sweet, thank you! And because I ordered it early enough it will arrive tonight, so I can start playing it right away!
I was really disappointed by super paper Mario following the awesomeness of TTYD.
Still have the disc, nothing for me again this week.
@Oubie Yes. It's not a complicated RPG, much simpler than Bravely Default, for example, with less awesome graphics than Bravely and others, but it's a very nice game with a fairly intuitive grid battle system. I really enjoyed it.
@LandOfZeldtir You don't need to play 999 to get the best out of VLR and ZTD, but if you think you will want to play it, play it first. Otherwise VLR will spoil a lot of the plot. Likewise, but less so, with ZTD - you can play ZTD without playing 999 and VLR first (although I wouldn't recommend it), but then you'll spoil the previous games. To get the best out of all of them, play them all and play them in order.
Edit: I see you've followed above advice and have 999 on the way - be prepared to lose a lot of sleep, because you will want to find out just one more thing, and then the next, and then the next.... Enjoy!
I'll get me some Super Paper Mario and Megaman Legacy Collection. Decent week, at least for discounts.
@LandOfZeldtir you don't to play it in order I guess but watch out on the 3DS version your save file might be corrupted ... Google it and read more to be in the safe side !!! I spent two hrs and now I'm scared to lose my save file after I spend hrs on it cuz I won't run again whole game ... So I decide to get the vita version !!!
Anyway every time I check be list every week ... I know why Wii U is failing .. There is nothing to play !! And if we find something to play it will be q cheap indie game that worth 15$ !! ... Thank god for Xbox and ps4 ... Overwatch is taking all my time !! I hope the game comes to NX so Nintendo fanboys can enjoy it and see the see how amazing is the game ... But I doubt it will come to the NX
- don't buy Mario paper on e shop it's for less than 10$ on eBay ! And it's better for your collection
I found Super Paper Mario boring so nothing for me this week.
I bought Mega Man 7 and Mega Man X on 3ds the other week, but as X2 and X3 appear to be diminishing returns, I think I'll call it quits. Possibly Mega Man Collection while it's on sale, although do these games have save states like the virtual console titles? That's been a godsend while playing through 7 and the idea of attempting some of the earlier (and from what I remember, harder) games without it fills me with dread...
@DizziParadise Ah yes, that's exactly what i'm looking for. I found Bravely Default to be a bit too deep for me. I like the whimsical style of Popolocrois.
Super Paper Mario was given to my by a girl who played it and didn't like it. I didn't like it either.
Has the game breaking bug been removed from Super Paper Mario? In the original version, if you don't find a certain key before talking to a certain character early on, the Wii console freezes and locks up, requiring the plug to be pulled out of the socket as even holding down the power button won't work!
What about Ducktails? Worth that price?
Well I'm getting Super Paper Mario. Be nice if the GameCube game was also coming or getting a refresh in HD, but I enjoyed the first one so more is good regardless.
Wow, almost all of the 3DS visual novels are discounted. Adventure fans, spend some money and have lots of fun!
@Oubie Yes, excellent remake.
@LemonSlice Cool! Never got to it, perfect game for this quiet time of the year.
@Phil_Kavadias As much as I think Nintendo's prices are moronic and they are nothing more than a collective of idiots who would do anything in order to get your money...if the prices of entertainment products were really based on man hours, the whole system would collaps overnight. GTA5 took 5 years of development but still was sold in stores for the same price as Dark Souls, which took one third of that time.
Videogames have a set price - man hours or budget are irrelevant. When the audience buys them, they agree with that set price.
Furthermore, Wii games are still available to buy in most stores - if Nintendo devalued their products by offering them for the same price of NES roms, people would go "Wait a second, I spent 20 quid six months ago for something that was worth a fiver?!"
If people stopped buying these overpriced .isos instead of acting like crack addicts, prices would drop in a heartbeat.
Super Paper Mario....
One of the creepiest Paper Mario ever...
Wanna feel the nostalgia of World of Nothing or River Twygz Bed ?
Then, there you go and good night.....
@TromaDogg
Eh ? Seriously ?
Wow.... that was terrible bugs...
@Chandlero
It is technically possible for Wii U to run GameCube games (hackers have proved that), so I don't know why Nintendo does not release them on eShop. Also, it is technically possible to use GameCube controllers using the GameCube Adapter for Wii U, so there is no reason why Nintendo does not make this possible. Moreover, GameCube controllers have been re-released recently, special editions included, so again I don't understand why Nintendo does not release GameCube games for Wii U. So disappointing, GameCube has a very interesting games library.
@VanillaLake Probably saving Gamecube for the NX - I hope...
@Martendo All the Wii roms on the eShop are overpriced except for Metroid Prime Trilogy when it was at €10, that was fine. I like Super Paper Mario but I already have the disc and I wouldn't pay €20 for a Wii rom, honestly. The best Paper Mario ever is The Thousand-year Door, though.
@Spideron But it's still not logical, Wii U has native compatibility with GameCube and supports the GameCube controllers while NX is an iPad with detachable controls and different architecture. There is no reason why GameCube games are not on eShop already.
@peeks
What do you mean by nothing ? Wii U can play BOTH Wii U and Wii. And i used that for playing both my Wii U and Wii games. There are tons of Wii games that can be enjoyed by everyone, even simple games like Wii Party, The Dog Island, Dance Dance Revolution, Super Mario Galaxy, Go Vacation, etc. Great games doesn't mean have to be 'ULTRA VIOLENCE' or 'SADISTIC' . Even cute games like Animal Crosing New Leaf or Girlie games like Style Savvy series can oversold and beat the adult games. Don't underestimate the 'APPROPRIATE' games like that.
Super Paper Mario, aka the start of the downfall for the series.
@Phil_Kavadias also VC games cost more on 3DS then Wii U. They should all be cross-buy and priced the same. I'm hoping Nintendo have this in mind with the NX. I'd be seriously angry if they don't let us carry over our purchases.
@Spideron
If NX can play Gamecube by physical and no need Gamecube memory card, OMG...
I will be so happy.
But probably, my old Wii will have to take a deep hybernation again... XD
@Anti-Matter NX can't play GameCube games because it has another architecture but Wii U could (natively, using digital memory cards).
@VanillaLake Yes, you can play TTYD in all glory on the WiiU. However, even homebrew didn't get an Off-TV mode with GamePad controls. So it would be so great having this offer from Nintendo.
Of course, this will never happen. I just have to play the game on my GameCube again
@VanillaLake
I know. I wouldn't download it anyway unless it was really cheap. I'll look for a cheap copy on disc.
I had the Thousand year door whenever it was released. It was brilliant. Then years later when we got the Internet in and I got an EBay account I sold it. Really regret that move.
@Martendo Yes, The Thousand-year Door is glorious. Hopefully you can play it again soon.
@Chandlero Yes, I know, that's why I'm saying that Nintendo can and should make that happen. If it's possible and some people play them on Wii U, why they don't just sell GameCube games on the eShop? The GameCube adapter and controllers are there already... And then people would understand why we are saying that GameCube games are so good.
An Ace Attorney sale again? Capcom really tries to get us hyped for Spirit of Justice!
BTW, what? Do I get a Mega Man X3 discount for already owning Mega Man X3? I can't own Mega Man X3 without buying it without the discount! Should I buy it two times?
@Ninten-san Meanwhile we're still waiting for a concrete release date... Come on Capcom! Still, with Gamescom soon, we should get a release date then, I guess.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Every week is a much better week for 3DS owners
@Anti-Matter dude you talking about 10 years old games ?? ... I need something new !! I played all these games and finished all of them ... What else ? Nothing on Wii U ... If you own ps4 and Xbox you will know the difference ... Each month 10 new games and each are amazing !! With 9/10 rating online support and new updates / DLC's ... You will know the difference then
@peeks And this doesn't seem to improve with upcoming NX, I'm starting to think that Wii U will be better than NX in every way and I can see even more people jumping to Xbox and PS "next" generation. For instance, Xbox One S 2TB is sold out already.
@Nin10doh That's true.
@VanillaLake I will always be a fan of Nintendo games and I'll buy NX day one for Pokemon / Mario Zelda etc ... Because it's the only way to play those games but with WII back in the days I didn't see I have to buy Xbox 360 or PS3 even with no HD on Wii but it had everything I want ... But when wiiU came I had to buy Xbox one and ps4 and I'm enjoying the games / prices and the deals and the console spec it self .. Amazing systems ... WII U is horrible I only used it to play some exclusive games that all ... The system it self the spec is pathatic and the prices of the games on eshop oh god ...
@peeks True, same here. This is the first generation I got consoles other than Nintendo's. In my case I got a Wii U, then a PS4 when games stopped coming to Wii U and then an Xbox One. Xbox One has the better deals and policies and while it's true that PS4 has a little advantage this is going to change very soon with Scorpio. Xbox is becoming the best gaming environment (outside PC) but, at the same time, I'm a Nintendo fan as well and Nintendo would sell me NX with something like a proper 3D Mario game, a new Wave Race game, etc. I won't buy it at launch, that's for sure. I want to see what Nintendo does, I don't want to buy the console for the Nintendo brand alone, I want Nintendo to make me want it. I want Nintendo to do things right. And, if NX is disappointing and a failure, then I want Nintendo to make great games again for the other platforms.
Heck yeah, Super Paper Mario! Made my day.
(Aside from being on vacation with the greatest girl I could ever want.)
Aw man! Why are Nintendo so slow with releasing the Wii VC games?
I bought Paper Mario Wii several months ago because I thought Nintendo wouldn't release it as a VC title.
Now I have to sell my disc version to get the superior download version...
I wish the American update this week was this "empty". Seriously, everyone, you're getting a lot of VC this week, but you still complain about it.
@peeks
Sorry, i NEVER like XBOX and PS4. NEVER EVER. NEVER want to buy them, NEVER want to know their newest games, NEVER like whatsoever their efforts. And so what if my Wii games already 10 years old ago ? I still like to play that even sometimes there is a time i feel bored, but that's so natural. Even NDS now already 12 years ago from now, it doesn't matter for me. If i never played the games before, i still considered that as a 'NEW' for me. Time doesn't matter for me, as long i can play that anytime, it will be fine. I still have some NDS titles that i have never owned before and i don't care if already several years old. Who cares ?
Wii U still have some proper games, even just a few decent titles for me, i still satisfied. Even typing this comment i'm using my Wii U gamepad right now. I got my wish, even not so many but i still enjoy it. Wii U IS NOT NOTHING. I have Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World and Nintendoland so far, still waiting for Paper Mario Color Splash. Even with very few Wii U games that i have, i don't complain. I still can play my Wii games while waiting for proper Wii U games for me.
XBOX and PS4 have 10 games every month ? WHO CARES !!
All of them just disgusting for me. I NEVER trust anymore for those game company that only provide adult games and horrible Western games. BIG NO NO from me. Just stick on Nintendo no matter what the situation.
Sorry, if my comments can be hurting your feeling. Just want to be honest about my feeling.
Ok that's the 3rd time I've seen Resident Evil Revelations on sale. How is the multiplayer feature? Is it download play or does my wife and I both need to buy the game?
Cool I can finally get Resident Evil Revelations on discount. Read the reviews and played the 3ds demo. Seems alright.
Wish they'd out MMX4, The Star Droids MM and MM 8,9,10
Big improvement over last week, but still isn't anything great. Already own everything I'm interested in on here.
@Oubie You'll definitely enjoy it then. It's a lovely story with some great characters and it's not too taxing to progress. I too found Bravely just a bit too deep (and I don't have the time, sadly, to sink hours into it at one sitting, which is how I'd want to play it to do it justice), but Popolocrois was just at the right level for me and the time I had available. That said, I'm nearly at the end of ZTD and work is quiet, so maybe I'll be able to do Bravely justice at last. I do hope you enjoy Popolocrois.
I found Super Paper Mario seriously boring. Yes, I liked the 2D/3D gimmick and yes, parts of the story was entertaining but the unskippable intro was 20 minutes long or something crazy like that, and the featureless bland space maze completely killed my interest in playing the game further. I sold my dick in disgust.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Where? At Amazon US and Gamestop it's right around $18 used with no guarantee it'll work...
Europe must offer better prices on used games...lucky.
@Bass_X0 Uh...that doesn't mean your manhood in British English right lol? xD
I think you meant disc.
@BensonUii I was probably thinking more as a customer than as a Nintendo businessman. Plus, this is something they could have done long ago, before the Wii downloads.
None of the new interests me.
Sales-wise, a better week than last, but I own all the games that are on sale. Everyone should check out the Resident Evil and Ace Attorney games. I'd also give a recommendation to Sadame and Rage of the Gladiator if you have a few extra bucks kicking around.
@BensonUii What you're saying doesn't make sense, they have already released Wii games. And why would have GameCube games hurt their business? Nonsense, really.
@BensonUii Okay, I think that I know what you mean now. However, Nintendo made us buy additional controllers last and this generation: classic controller, classic controller pro, Wii U classic controller... Now you can get a GameCube adapter for Wii U and use your old or new GameCube controllers for just ONE game, while they are videos on Youtube that show how easy is to run GameCube games and use those original accessories made by Nintendo for playing GameCube games on Wii U natively. You say that Wii U natively support Wii games, but that's not the whole story. Wii U also supports GameCube games in the same way, it's just a locked function (like that stupid region-lock). You are talking about Wii Remote controllers, but remember that they are not included in any (relevant) Wii U bundle, so what is the difference between them and GameCube controllers currently available at your local store?
Honestly, there's no reason why GameCube games are not available on eShop and, of course, there's no reason why only a few N64 games are currently available. I agree about that. When you say that Wii U is not going to be a hit now, don't forget the reason why it was not a hit in the first place. Nintendo's decisions about Wii U are lamentable, out-of-date and out of touch.
I might pick up the D&D game and since it does use the pro controller does increase that more for me.
@VanillaLake nicely put sir
@BensonUii "I don't care why the Wii U failed"
I guess we all care for different things and have different opinions. I was just trying to make you see why Nintendo's wrong decisions are bad for us. I'm Nintendo's customer, not Nintendo's owner and I don't care about NX at the moment. I can't have an opinion about what will happen in the future but I can tell you how I see things now.
@Ikramali Thanks.
@DizziParadise Yeah this is the time to finish games that take a while. Who knows, maybe you'll even start Bravely Second. I admire those games, but they're way too deep for me.
@Anti-Matter Yes. I think it might only affect the PAL version of the game though. I definitely encountered it and had to google it to make sure there was nothing wrong with my copy. This article is from back when the game was first released in 2007....

So, if this is the PAL version on the EU E-shop, it might still have this game breaking bug too.
@BensonUii OK but I don't understand... Do you expect me to think the same as you? Because you insist on saying "I don't care..." about the stuff I do care.
@BensonUii My comments were on topic replying to other people just when you came annoying me, I still don't know why, because we haven't had a discussion and we don't seem to have the same opinion either.
@BensonUii I just think you are becoming a bit obsessed with my opinions. You have already said yours and I did not say anything, but you are starting to get too repetitive. Of course you can say what you think about my comment but once is more than enough, that's why it's starting to be annoying. Let's just stop it here.
