Re: Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings Of Ruin Has Now Shipped Over 1.5 Million Copies

Madao

MHS2 is an OK game imo, nothing special but not bad either. Kind of like the various smaller DS/3DS RPGs with very basic mechanics. The story was also nothing special, but it did do a good job presenting it.

For me it dragged on longer than its mechanics could support. I did manage to finish it in the end but I had to force myself to do it. Combat was just far too basic and it never got more complex.

Re: Soapbox: Pokémon Legends: Arceus Raises The Question - How Much Do Janky Graphics Matter?

Madao

Got to play the game a bit today. Graphics are serviceable. Nothing to write home about, but good enough to not detract from the experience.

Sadly it follows the paradigm of the majority of exclusive Switch games we are getting the last 2-3 years where there is noticeable technical issues (Monster Hunter Stories 2, SMTV, NMH3, etc).

The Switch is showing its age, especially as the games coming out for it get more ambitious, so it is what it is.

Re: Activision Blizzard Boss To Leave When Xbox Deal Is Done, Report Claims

Madao

While I am not a fan of a huge company with so many popular franchises getting bought up and becoming an exclusive company, in this case I think it is for the best.

Activision-Blizzard's games were getting worse and worse, Blizzard was rotten to the core and Bobby Kotick trying to sweep everything under the rug without any accountability.

A new leadership and a new vision was needed and this might provide it. MS has done a really good job lately with their first party titles, so I am hoping they manage to get Activision-Blizzard to also turn for the better.

Re: Pokémon Legends: Arceus Gets A New Six-Minute Overview Trailer

Madao

Looks very similar to BotW visually. Up close things look as good as you would expect from a Switch game. In the distance they should have tried to be more aggressive with trying to hide the ugliness, like BotW. BotW has fog and low brightness on distance objects so you can't make things out clearly, hiding things like what we see here with trees sticking out like sore thumbs.

Perfectly happy tbh with the visuals and performance (assuming it is not carefully picked to look better than it is). Now to wait for reviews to see if the game is actually any good.

Re: Square Enix President Knows You Hate NFTs Because You "Play To Have Fun"

Madao

People that are into NFTs for games are strictly people that chase moonshots in cryptocurrency. They might tell you otherwise, but they are just lying to you and possibly also to themselves.

NFTs offer nothing that we couldn't do already. Look at steam marketplace for example. NFTs do the same with a much higher impact on the environment.

"But I don't really own my TF2 hat, while with NFTs I would". Sure, but if valve brought down TF2 even if it was using NFTs you would still have no use for your damn hat, so what is the difference? You still rely on the companies to support your NFTs.

Also to add to the above. You technically own a piece of text that links to the hat (so it relies on a regular DB to link to it). So if TF2 went down you would just own a piece of text and no hat.

Re: Sakurai Believes He Was Able To "Fully Complete" Iwata's Final Mission

Madao

I really want to see Sakurai work on something different. I feel like he is being wasted working on Smash. I love the game, but I feel like the core of it is mostly set in stone now, other people should be able to take over and even bring fresh ideas.

A new IP by Sakurai or a revive of a dormant one would be great. I would not mind seeing him work on a new gen game as well, he is a 3rd party developer after all.

Re: A New Smash Bros. Would Need A Smaller Roster, Admits Sakurai

Madao

I don't see how Smash could work as a 3D fighter. Is there a good example of a 3D fighter where up to 4-8 players can play in the same arena? Or any 3D fighter with huge arenas with a lot of height variation like smash?

All 3D fighters I can think of have 2 players that are mostly locked looking at each other with the camera in the middle and most of their maps are small and circular.

Anyway, for me smash just needs a better single player experience. I think most of the 3rd party characters will be gone in the next entry and I don't mind the roster being smaller.

Re: Former Metroid Prime Engineer Admits He Was "Disappointed" With The Wii's Specs

Madao

Not surprised that a tech engineer wanted to move to something better hardware-wise. There was a really big shift in techniques with 360/PS3 that was not possible before, which is very exciting for a person working close to the metal. Wii being underpowered and similar to the GC meant they would just do refinements on what they had already instead of moving to new tech.

I enjoyed the Wii as a console overall, but it was also the console that made Nintendo my secondary choice to game on, PC becoming my main. I think Nintendo knows it is that way for most people since then so they don't need to complete on tech, since the majority of owners can get that on their main machines.

Nintendo focuses on offering a different experience instead while keeping good profit margins on hardware and lower game development costs. As long as they keep that different experience compelling (like they did with the Wii and Switch) people will always pick Nintendo for their secondary gaming option.

Re: Metroid Dread In The Running With The Game Awards GOTY Nomination

Madao

Cyberpunk released September 2020, weird that they decided to put it on the awards this year since it would have definitely been considered for last year. Then again these awards are just a marketing show so no point thinking too deeply about it.

Quite a weak year overall for the industry, I love Metroid Dread but this GOTY list is poor.
