It's been a while since we got a sales update about Capcom's other Monster Hunter game, Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, so how is it going? The Nintendo Switch and PC release have now shifted over 1.5 million copies worldwide.
This follows on from an update last October - confirming 1.3 million sales. In its latest financial results, Capcom mentioned how Wings of Ruin contributed to "solid digital sales growth" for the company and "continued to perform well".
The latest mainline entry in the series Monster Hunter Rise is also performing incredibly well - with Capcom revealing last month how the game has now shipped over 8 million units worldwide - this includes sales of the recently launched PC version of the game.
If you haven't already tried out Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, you can always check out the demo of the game available from the eShop. We mostly enjoyed the game - awarding it eight out of ten stars.

Q : Have you contributed to Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin sales so far?
Me : Eh... I changed my mind about MonHun Stories 2. I felt the whole gameplay and circumstances over there were not clicked on me after I watched some upcoming trailers.
Q: Have you contributed to Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin sales so far?
Me: Not me.
1. I needed to save up some money
2. They didn't fix the performance issues
I thought the Stories 2 demo was fun even though I don't like the main Monster Hunter series. The full game is currently sitting on my wishlist, waiting for my rpg backlog to get smaller and/or a sale
I want to get this game to play in handheld mode, but I don't have the time for all of these games. Lol
I got this one and I played it for some time, then lost interest and dropped it. But it's a visually appealing and generally well crafted jrpg, anyway. It just tends to get repetitive but it can be said about most games of this genre.
Yep but I have a huge backlog. 😅
MHS2 is an OK game imo, nothing special but not bad either. Kind of like the various smaller DS/3DS RPGs with very basic mechanics. The story was also nothing special, but it did do a good job presenting it.
For me it dragged on longer than its mechanics could support. I did manage to finish it in the end but I had to force myself to do it. Combat was just far too basic and it never got more complex.
I asked for this game for Christmas, as I really enjoyed my time with the demo despite never really getting into Monster Hunter. I played a couple of demos for mainline Monster Hunter games, and it was a miserable experience, if I'm being honest. It felt like Hyrule Warriors if instead of spending 30 minutes taking down a horde of hundreds of enemies, I was spending 30 minutes to an hour taking down a single baddie. It got very monotonous and boring, and I felt super underpowered. I'm sure it's better if you have friends to play online with as a squad, but as a solo experience, I think I'd rather be subjected to Chinese water torture. A monster also kept knocking me into a loading zone (Generations, not Rise) which made me want to pull my hair out.
But yeah, I'm eager to get into Monster Hunter Stories 2, but I really haven't had a chance to touch it. There were just so many games that came out last year, and even more this year, so my backlog is getting pretty thick. It didn't help that I've been having some pretty rough COVID symptoms the past couple weeks and haven't felt up to doing anything, including playing games. I still haven't even finished Banjo-Kazooie for the first time, which I expected to have done by now. I also still need to play Shining Pearl which I also got for Christmas as I've never played more than a couple hours of any Pokémon game, but now Arceus is out, which people say is amazing. First-world problems, eh?
Whenever I do go back to Monster Hunter Stories 2, I'm tempted to just wipe my demo progress and start all over, as it's been a while. They really won me over in the same way the demo for Dragon Quest 11 did. I'm not even a big RPG guy, but both those titles really resonated with me. I'm still not sure if I love the combat, but I can at least wrap my head around it unlike the mechanics in the mainline games. The main draw for me, though, is the absolutely gorgeous environments.
I really wish I could just make time stand still for a while so I can get all these games knocked out. Heaven help me when I finally get a job.
I'm surprised this game got a sequel in the first place considering the first game didn't sell that well.
Happy that Capcom gave this spinoff series more some love.
Enjoyed this one more than MHR in the end.
@Diogmites I agree that the first game it's story was more fun indeed, you felt like being part of it all from start to end.
This one was fun too, but it is true the first one was better.
I mean I contributed to rises sales. But no I am not into any rpg’s except paper Mario like and Mario and luigi
The games have me 75% interested. They just need a little something more to cross the line for me
Good to hear. I did contribute to the game's sales, I replayed the first game a second time the week before it released, and I hope to see this series continue (and improve).
Glad to hear it ended up doing well. It's a really solid monster collecting game. I kinda dropped it last year, but fully enjoyed the 30 hours or so I did play of it.
@blindsquarel
Imagine trying to define a "Paper Mario game."
(Yes, I know you mean the first two games)
I definitely contributed to the games sales. It's one of my favorite rpgs in a long time and the game is just a joy to look at. Plus trying to get the best monstie is always addicting, at least for me lol
Frickin' amazing game. One of my favorites of the entire year!!!
@ModdedInkling
To be fair or again king is good. And I have fun with sticker Star and color splash. But yeah the others are better. I also include bug fables in that.
@blindsquarel
Luckily you are talking to someone who also happens to enjoy all of the games in the series. I enjoy each game in their own ways, but I hold the original two above all and sorely miss seeing it from Intelligent Systems. At least like you mentioned, Bug Fables and other games are taking on that mantle.
It's easily my favourite monster collecting rpg on Switch and one of the most fun rpgs out there. I'm glad that's it's still selling well, but it deserved even more praise.
Mostly enjoyed yet gave it an 8?
This game is super underrated! I enjoyed the main game but the post-game is soooo addicting!
I did buy MHS2 and i completed it, but it was more because i did not want to miss out on a story. I did not find the gameplay engaging and the game felt very repetitive
Frame rate dips is keeping me away from this game.
I got it, played it for quite a bit and then lost interest, because I still had the Monster Hunter Rise itch. Then a lot of other games happened. I really need to get back into it, because I did like it a lot. Probably might have to restart, though, since I have no idea where I am in the game and have little recollection about what happened.
@FishyS literally same, i played the demo for 15hours which in my book usually is a buy straight away but oh well now that I’m playing Pokemon Arceus i don’t know when I’m gonna buy it
I wonder what happend between MHS 1 and 2 since I think 1 has the better art directon and 2 has such a poor stuttering open world
I want to buy it, I really do. But I recently went into a shooping spree buying some games that I wanted for a while and STV physical, which was hard to find. Hoping the phisical version of this game is still easy to find a couple of months from now when I have more money and (hopefully) a smaller backlog.
I powered through both MHS and MHS2 in January in anticipation of Legends Arceus. I liked both games but I don't think they are as engaging as Legends Arceus. The randomized egg den system and the fact that you have to traverse a den for one egg each time made it a bit of a slog by the end. Also, whoever told them to gimp the storage system from 1 to 2 should be fired. Regardless, I liked the stories that were told. I just wish that the conclusion of each story was better, they let your ratha keep their cool new forms, and that they let me keep the cool baby monster at the end of MHS2 (if you played it, you know what I mean).
@jojobar The first one has more performance issues with none of them being particularly bad in that regard. People are giving the sequel a hard time for that but aside from Rutoh Village which was the most notable area and a few frame drops here and there the game was quite stable. It was definitely more stable than Pokemon Sword and Shield and from what I see comparable to Arceus despite of more demanding graphics and models.
As for the art direction is the same as I know. They just changed the more chibi/ kid characters to more mature designs as many people wanted that.
