@ElRoberico I think it's the epitome of a game I wish I could like, but the poor pacing killed it. Not a bad one, and moment to moment the characters do have fun banter and the zelda like gameplay is fun, but this is a good example of why it's important to have an editor.
@ElRoberico If I were to take a less judgy stab at it, the combination of the gameplay, the intrigue the story builds, the zelda like gameplay, and the mother-like graphics stew into something of a nostalgia and critical stew that garnered the game some positive buzz. It helps it was hyped up more than the usual Indie game that isn't too dissimilar to this game, and being published by the same folks who published Stardew Valley gave it some more notice.
But yeah, plenty of folks found the sluggish pacing of the story to be a deal breaker, as it did with me. Nice little game but didn't get anywhere interesting fast enough, and the moment to moment gameplay wasn't doing anything innovative to keep me going between the massive amount of unskippable dialogue. I know folks like to use Earthbound as a possible inspiration for the game but go back and play that game, folks didn't talk nearly as much as they do in something like this unless it was part of a joke about run on sentences.
Was the Supreme difficulty tier added in the arcade version? I was surprised to see it when I loaded up the demo, and even more surprised at how ridiculously hard it was.
The controls definitely take some getting used to, but up to the third difficulty tier (aka the hardest in the 3ds version), I was able to handle it just fine. Then going up to 4, having to hold one long note while hitting multiple single and directional notes, felt like patting my head and rubbing my belly.
The extra songs alone and the ability to play on switch would've made it worth it for me, the need to relearn the game on these controls would've added fake-longevity but longevity nonetheless. The new quest mode made like the Kingdom Hearts rhythm game's quest mode is a nice touch, making it less random and more set is good too. But the absurd lurch in difficulty makes it must for me. That and it was a better Dry-January at the bar I work at than I anticipated.
@VoodooTrumpet So true. It was far and away my game of the year last year and one I think about and recommend to others a lot, but it has absolutely no replay value Hopefully I get amnesia soon and can enjoy this game again!
Is there something other than soundtrack issues stopping Sega from rereleasing Sonic 3 and Knuckles? If that was the main stopping block as has long been rumored, you figured they would've just put out a new version with a different soundtrack (as much as that would suck, considering the sound track is awesome).
@EvilLucario Ah. See I haven't gotten that long into a run (just under an hour in the third level before I got overwhelmed. Maybe I'll try and test it later by letting an hour elapse in the first level.
@EvilLucario I've played in handheld mode exclusively, and while it seems to over just under/at 30, it holds statically and has never jumped for me.
I feel rather let down that this game seemed to be designed with the multiplayer in mind. All too often, I get blind sided by enemies I couldn't have possibly seen coming, and the surge of enemies summoned by the teleporter seems pretty unreasonable. Kind of ruins playing portably for me, but damn it all if it still isn't pretty fun to play.
@Draz While I'm not doubting the potential for folks to be stupid, I'm going to be a little optimistic and say they're plants. How sad it is that that's considered optimism.
Weird thought: Whatever you announce here, also give us something we hadn't heard of. I wanted to hear more about Daemon Ex Machina because it seemed fun and unlike what they already put out. Much as I love the series' that they put out, I'm more drawn to refreshing new ideas (hence why I loved Return of the Obra Dinn, and would love it if that got a Switch port for the folks who can't play it on PC; sadly I wouldn't buy it again, any one who played it knows it has virtually no replay value once you beat it).
@Mr_Pepperami I think it's even more impressive that I have various friends who haven't bought a video game console in over a decade and picked up (and have been enjoying) the switch. It's just that fun/convenient.
I'm all for finding a middle ground between "here, just have everything, go nuts" and "we're going to make you play this game for hours to unlock everything so that you can be bored of it by the time you want to play with your friends". Considering I have about an hour tops a day to play anything, I don't want to use that hour a day for weeks on end unlocking everyone.
Once companies started withholding bonuses to developers based on metacritic scores (looking at your Bethesda), regardless of how well the game sold, I think we had hit the point where they should be done away with. But I think a score doesn't do as well of a job explaining if a game is good to someone than the content of the actual review. I've been reading a lot of positive reviews of Spiderman for PS4, and people keep positively comparing it to Arkham Knight, a game I thought was very bland. But I guess I'm pro literacy; anything that'll get folks reading reviews more and limiting comments like "THE HELL? YOU ONLY GAVE THIS AN 8?!?!?!"
Hearing that the fighter lists for classic mode are tailored personally for each character harken back to being in middle school, manufacturing some weird story mode for each character in my brain (most of which revolved around ness proving his worth).
@danielman9 I ignored everything else and thought the same thing. I skipped last year's edition and got way more into basketball this year, so I'll definitely pick it up provided they learned their lessons regarding microtransactions.
@thesilverbrick I like this site, particularly for news and eshop updates, but I've felt it's just a little too sycophantic when it comes to reviews, and also seems to go very far out of its way to not criticize anything. The reviews themselves are always written well, but the scores are always higher than average. Case in point, giving Axiom Verge a 10. It kind of devalues what a perfect score is if you keep throwing them out.
Beyond the fact that it wasn't my favorite game of last year, even though I already own it, I'll definitely double dip. I hope theguys who were contracted to port this port other games as well.
Granted I don't live with them anymore, but both my brother and sister have a Switch of their own, as do I. It'll be a stupid photo op on Thanksgiving.
With that being said, shameless marketing and sales pitch aside, I'm with them on bringing people together for local multiplayer. Overwatch was the last game I'll ever play online, being a harbinger of everything I can't stand about AAA gaming (shallow story, lootboxes, anemic single player if it's there in the first place, being forced to play with folks I don't know).
I don't know if it could catch up to the Wii, it felt like more of a game system and less of a fad like the wii was (not to knock the system, I preferred the virtual console there, and the system had some fun games and backwards compatability). Unless something with insane mass appeal beyond gamers like Wii Sports comes along, coupled with something that makes it appealing to folks not interested in gaming at all (I seem to recall a lot of folks using their Wii's as their primary netflix streaming device; maybe some emerging app or industry we haven't seen yet can thrive on the Switch). Refreshingly, I think it may do better than the Xbox one and hopefully catch up to the ps4, as the switch seems to fill a better niche than the other two (fun games with lower cost of entry for developers in an age where tech is prioirtized over innovation and fun).
Side note, maybe it's because I live in New York City, but I seem to have zero problem stumbling upon Switches. Each store has a few on hand, and the Nintendo World store gets them every day.
@duhsoares21 It's so strange how I get a sense of "yay no more people can enjoy it" with that and skyrim, for the nintendo fans that don't PC game that didn't get to enjoy either game yet. I forget who, but someone wrote that Doom (2016) was the perfect nintendo game, as it felt like the inevitable conclusion of their "bah here's some story, now have some fun" ethos.
As much as I love the original, it being the game that started my love of Indie developed games, it's not an entirely exciting game to watch videos of, and there's little that can be done with capturing like the crazy zelda videos that have been popping up.
Unless this is some precursor to nintendo allowing it for all titles, in which case, sure why not.
People joked about Karen being anti-social bringing the video game console to parties, but many a conversation has started because I was playing the switch in public, or many a game of street fighter 2 has popped off in a bar (along with the good old fashioned street fighter 2 fights).
Considering I never play online, I didn't care for the story mode at all, and all I wanted to do was run the franchise mode until I got bored, it's an instant buy.
Already downloaded Deemo (looooooved Voez) and golf story, I'll pick a few more of these up next week when I'm not spending so much at once. Fifa physical is coming in.
Until the switch came along, I hadn't built a library of games (not counting steam) since the GBC. It's pretty nuts that I already have 12 physical games for the system and a ton more digital.
GTA 5 came out right around the time I grew disdainful of being home, which made me dislike console gaming. It would be nice to play this again if I'm not tethered to my house.
But let's be honest: if the rumor is true, they're putting this out because it's one of the highest selling games of the last few years, and they're well aware there's a contingent of Nintendo fans who never got a chance to play it.
This game will be good for a release lull, as it stands my backlog has grown too much and I still play Breath of the Wild a lot (and Fifa and Mario are right around the corner).
Mainstream console gaming on my ps4 began to lose my interest right around the time I became far more serious about fitness and long distance running, so the Switch has been a godsend (much like my 3ds was before it). Strap on my running bag, throw my switch in, run 15km's away from my apartment, play switch on the trip home. It's definitely been a great motivator to leave the house, odd is it may seem.
I have gotten well over half of the indie games they've released on switch so far. The fact that I'm never home (work two jobs, very physically active, commute on subway lines) means the switch suits my life much better than steam or ps4 had, and thus I'm willing to give anything even remotely amusing a chance. So keep them coming, you'll get at least one sale from me (eyes rogue legacy and nuclear throne, hopes for a port).
I'm not sure why developers are even making a big deal out of this. To me it sounds like a giving them an underhanded pitch in an age when game development has become prohibitively expensive. @TommyRabbit from what I understand, Tobyfox wants to release it for Nintendo consoles but would have to redevelop the game from the ground up (it was made via gamemaker, which Nintendo doesn't support). Unless Sony signed some exclusivity deal, it's not totally hopeless if someone lends him a hand.
@masterLEON it's so bad at GameStop that I was talking to a manager at GameStop about the GCU, he had never heard about it, and he said he'd have to shop that way from now on.
