Woah nice surprise this morning, I wasn't expecting Ogre Battle this soon! Definitely worth checking out for every strategy fans out threre, but keep in mind the gameplay is not as complex as Final Fantasy Tactics or even Tactics Ogre and may seem rather static to some.
I'm surprised only one other person said it, but Faxanadu is a must. I'd also love to see the other Ys games come to VC, but please please please Hudson, release Faxanadu. Revive the World Tree!
Great news for Tactics Ogre, if it means we could get both Ogre Battle and Tactics Ogre sometimes. The rest is of no interest to me... BTW, is it me or even Japan VC seemed lackluster for a couple of months? VC really has been going down the drain for some time now
This is certainly good news, if Hudson is preparing to release new material on VC, it could mean we might get Faxanadu someday, after all, only Nintendo and Hudson are involved in this one crosses fingers
Hmm, nothing good for me here, as it was for the past two weeks, but it's ok, I'm in the middle of a move, boxing and unboxing, so I don't have much time for VC
Another good, albeit single-game, week! And that's one less for those who kept asking for the same game for the last two months... Which one will it be next?
Pretty good list! Like some already said, it is missing the original Contra. I'd add the following : Crystalis Faxanadu (Come on Hudson! Don't leave this one out!) Lufia I & II (Especially II) Illusion of Gaia (Non DW or FF, should be possible) E.V.O. (Same reason) Secret of Evermore Ogre Battle (Wasn't this one announced in Japan a while ago?) Super Punch-Out! Warsong
:S Looks like two slaps in the face for the price of one. Catch-up weeks are already not very good, but catching-up those really must feel like a waste of time. Hang in there
@marktheshark Bah, never liked King of Monsters back then, I tought it was a rather bad fighter. It was fun trashing buildings for about 3 minutes, then it got old. Not enough characters and not enough moves made a bad button masher IMO.
Well, it's no surprise this is another one-week game, but the game itself is a surprise. Startropics was one of my favorite NES games, and if this one is as good as the first one, it should be worth a look. Plus, I've never played it, so this looks like a good way to spend some Christmas Wii points
I was ready to post an EPIC FAIL, but I guess this is just a regular FAIL. Great RPG, great series, but still a single game week, which makes it bad for people who don't like RPGs. Guess we're stuck with hit-or-miss weeks for a while... In any case, this week is certainly better than last week with Enduro Racer.
Eww... Is it me or my Christmas stocking smells like somebody crapped in it? Only one week left before Christmas, and I doubt things will suddenly change for the best. I don't think we should expect anything better for next week. For all it's worth, I'm beginning to think I might as well just forget VC for the next 6 months, so maybe when I get back, I may have 2-3 great games to get... Total disappointment, but is it really a surprise?
Another rather bland and pointless, single-game-already-on-a-compilation week... I lack words to say how this feels, but I think lame and fail might be appropriate. Even Wiiware feels this way today.
Booo! What a lame month November is turning out to be! And I can safely say this week is literaly $hit! @LinktotheFuture : Yeah I think I'm going to get it. Never been a huge GnR fan, but this looks like something interesting... Huge release with 15 years in the making. Last thing something like that happened, it was NIN's The Fragile in 1999, 7 years in the making, and I still feel I haven't heard it all, even after all those years and listens...
Yay for USB keyboard support (I have to see if it works in Animal Crossing City Folks too). And faster upload/download times to SD card can't hurt. Another step towards an external drive solution! Otakus rejoice! As for the updates not being clear as to what they do, jailbroken and hacked Wii users as well as nervous legit users should always wait and see what Update Lemmings and Guinea Pigs (like me ) have to say before updating.
Meh, nothing worth my interest here, I remember Forgotten Worlds but I doubt it aged well. As for Space Invaders, I think it came around more than was needed since 1978. Let the poor thing rest. Anyways, two games are better than one... Now I hope we'll get Phantasy Star IV soon (and Ogre Battle too!)
Great to see the three first Mega Man games on VC! IMO it started to get worst from there (opinion, not fact, thank you). I also have to agree with most people here that whining when we get 1 game a week even if it's MM3!!!11 makes sense because, like many said, if you don't like the game even if it's 11/10, a must-have, etc., you're screwed. If you get 3 OK games in a week and like none of them, you're being picky, but at least you can't argue you did not have choice. I'd rather have a 3-OK-games week over 3 1-AAA-game weeks in a row because of variety. I'm bound to like at least one of the 9 OK games, and I'll have a game to play for a week or two. And if I choose not to download anything, I'm the one to blame, not Nintendo. If I like none of the 3 AAA games released in 3 weeks, I'm pissed and at loss because I've had nothing to sink my teeth into for three weeks in a row. Makes sense no?
Yup, back to drough after a great summer. VC could end up being craptastic until Christmas. That is, I hope Nintendo will make things more interesting as Christmas approaches... Anyways, we got a lot of excellent and long-winded games lately, so I'll try not to start complaining too fast. It can't be SMRPG or SoM every week, and with Ogre Battle and MM3 coming our way sometime, it's okay to have a few lame weeks once in a while. It gives us time to finish games that are worth it
Ogre Battle! I hope this one comes quickly to North America, I never could get through it and I'd like to have another crack at it. @Rapadash : Yeah, I agree with you, I think we should focus on non-FF & DW Square-Enix games, and there a quite a few good Square and Enix games outside theses two franchises. E.V.O., Gaia, Evermore and the like. Unfortunately, Square and Enix have been been prolific to say the least on PSX, and most of their games on early consoles (read : NES and SNES) were FF and DW games, so methinks we're in a bit of a loss here Oh well, bring on the games we can have!
Too bad you guys did'nt get Secret of Mana, but at least you have Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition I'm sure you'll get SoM pretty soon tough...
@Surgical Precision Well first off SoM is not a post merger game, it's pure Square. Some people were originally put off by its "childish" look, but I think it was part of its charm, much like LoZ:ALTTP. Colourful graphics and EXCELLENT multiplayer make it a must get. It was one of the few games to make you want to get a Multitap. It is really a great game, but don't expect a CT or FF type RPG, it is more of a hack n' slash type of game and while the comparison to Zelda isn't really exact, SoM does have more in common with Zelda than with traditional Square RPGs.
Well this is good news for some of us. Like jackolantern said, it was not that long to tranfer files. In the worst cases (LoZ:OoT for example), it could take 5 minutes or so, but is that unbearable? Oh geeks and otakus, how happy must you be @russta : Yeah this will probably mean an easier way to get into the Wii (and, maybe, run Linux and stuff from SD without busting open your Wii... How cool would a Wii-Fii Liinux server in my living room be ?? )
Hmm... back to 1-game weeks (not considering WiiWare, it is VC Reviews after all). I am not going to complain, especially considering the great last few weeks we have had, but I do hope we won't get back to piss-poor weeks like the first months of summer. Slowing down the pace with upcoming holidays is not a good idea methinks. I am not saying ST2 is piss-poor (never played and will not be getting it), I'm just saying 1 VC games a week is rather dull. I have to agree with deabattery's 1st comment (12), releasing an obscure/bland game every week alongside another one might keep things a little more exciting. On another hand, it is good to see SNES releases, it was long neglected (with the exception of SMRPG).
Meh, I've long made a cross on most of Rare's stuff and I don't really care anymore, except for Killer Instinct and Battletoads... sheds a tiny tear Anyways, I don't think focusing on what might never come to VC will make it happen... Time to move on people! Nothing to see here!
Good week for VC, Doge Ball is pretty cool and I know some people have been waiting for Vectorman for a long time... Nothing for me here though, except for MM9, but I've no time for it right now, I've been sucked into the Yggdrasil Labyrinth of Etrian Odyssey (DS). Damn you Atlus!
Hmmm. Looks too much like Nintendo's to be any good. I mean, I already have one. Maybe third parties should focus on making hardware with different functions and feels than what is already available. More choice, less lawsuits, thank you very much Oh and adding speedgroves on the front won't do any good either
@ MaxPlastic : Is Spore on DS any good? I know there's a iPhone/iPod Touch version which is apparently only the Cell stage of the game. Is the DS version the same?
@ People on Alpo's case : I don't think that guy's behavior is worth the time you spend replying. I think things would be better off if you simply ignored the ignoramus, they usually are pretty good at digging their own grave, or hanging themselves high with their own leashes. OTOH, hitting the nail too much times on the same issue (i.e. grammar) lowers you to his level. Try something constructive, it help keeps the forum cleaner I'll second Timp29's (74) and M. Asimov : "violence is the last refuge of the incompetent".
@ Alpo : Not that I'm concerned, but foul mouthing, bullying and insulting everybody personally won't make you respected. Maybe it worked at kindergarden, maybe a bit at primary school, but then after it stops working. So going for that strategy gives us the cue that you haven't gone farther than that. I think cooling down before replying is a must, especially when x.SuperMario.x is involved (no offense SuperMario, but you know you end up looking aggressive sometimes ). Id I'd gladly give you my address, but I doubt you'd drive up to Quebec just to punch me in the face to prove your point...
Ooooh I kinda knew I would'nt miss anything on VC this week, but seems like I missed a lot of fun here! Is there a way to get a video replay? Good week, nothing for me here, but I know how much some of you were waiting for Cho Aniki, though I hope we won't get back into a monthly streak of shooters after the last few weeks... Then again, I don't really mind, I still have Ys and SMRPG, which will be gathering virtual dust for a few weeks since I got SPORE! dances around making weird birdie noises Anybody hoping for a quick port to Wii? (Will Wright seemed dedicated to releasing his baby on Wii)
Great week for you Europeans! Ys really seems great (just got into it, combat is still a bit weird, it makes the game a bit arcadey) as well as DoReMi, which I guess I should get once I beat Milon's Secret Castle, only because it looks so colorful! And guessing for Nintendo title for "landmark" releases seems like a no brainer to me, and Earthbound seems very likely. They already have Kid Icarus, Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, etc. They pretty much have every iconic character there, so Ness should be next!
@ Adamant You know, I think you're right, these kind of games would actually make great WiiWare, but I believe we can forget anything that has to do with LucasArt there. Copyright and stuff. But it would sure be a great idea to release all three ICOM games in a bundle. And while we're at it, why not go with your idea and release old PC classics. Some old DOS games are now public domain and would certainly be easier to port for some indie developers than to make a new game from scratch and unlike you, I think it would be feasible. Me wants X-COM/UFO on WiiWare! (Heck, if THAT happens, I'll have to resign and leave my girlfriend )
Out of the blue : I have to agree this place is one of the most civilized gaming forum I've seen on the 'Net. I had completely abandoned having any kind of conversation on the 'Net for more thant 10 years after realizing it was a nest of forum trolls, StarCraft jerks looking for an easy win and other lowlife basement otakus. But thankfully not everyone is a troll or a jerk, and while sometimes things get out of hand, people here are mature enough to apologize/change subject/stfu when necessary.
@ x.SuperMario.x You do realise I was trying to be funny on my last (and quite far) comment? I know my sense of humor is not a given, and I know I rely to much on sarcasm, but still, it was not meant to be taken seriously. Anyways, with the conscutive release of 2 great RPGs, I think RPG fans will have more than enought to sink their teeth into, and considering RPGs take some time to finish and require some kind of commitment (thing you don't need with shooters or platformers), RPG fan's hands are full right now. Which brings me...
Kinda on topic I was starting to think we were due for some strategy game, I'm thinking along the lines of Warsong. Oh and I am the only one who whishes to see early NES adventure games like Deja Vu and Uninvited (hopefully with Wiimote support)?
Regarding next week, I think we're due to return to regular stuff, SMRPG was a pretty big 250th release, so nobody should get his hopes high. Though I do hope we get Mana pretty soon, I think I'd be starting to complain about "YARPG" if we get it next week since, well, getting too much RPGs in a row is bad for your health, mmmkay?
Seems like drought VC weeks are all but a bad memory! Nice to see some really great games released these past few weeks. Now time to get some points, I haven't downloaded Ys yet, and now this. This should also relieve the board of some unnecessary whining
EDIT : I'm almost sorry today (labour day holiday) isn't rainy Oh well guess Ys and SMRPG will have to wait... runs outside
Well great week, no surprises here. 2 excellent games to end an excellent month! I'll get Ys tonight for sure. Somehow, I feel things should be really interesting in the next few months... I do hope August's releases are an indication of things to come
Oh and maybe people still complaining about SMRPG should take a break. Sure it would be a nice surprise to see it released as the 250th game, but it will probably not. However, I'm sure it'll be released within the next year (hopefully before that), so in the meantime, why not try to cut some slack? Asking for it every week will certainly not make it suddenly pop out of the blue on your Wii.

Re: Nintendo Download: DSiWare, Equilibrio & Uncharted Waters (US)
Well Uncharted Waters is a nice surprise, enough for me to pull my Wii from the box it has been sitting in for the past month.
Re: USA VC Update: Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen

One step closer to Homebrew...
Wii is turning out to be a major disappointment for me...
Re: Hudson Not Abandoning Virtual Console After All?

I'd also love to see the other Ys games come to VC, but please please please Hudson, release Faxanadu. Revive the World Tree!
Re: USA VC Update: Wolf of the Battlefield: MERCS
Looks okay, the screenshots kind of remind me of Guerilla War / Metal Gear... I think I'll pass though.
Re: USA VC Update: Sonic Chaos
Meh. I was worried my Wii is in a box and I would not be able to get to it in time for Monday... I guess the Wii can spend another week in its box

Re: Ten Games We'd Like To See On The Virtual Console In 2009
Pretty good list!
Like some already said, it is missing the original Contra.
I'd add the following :
Crystalis
Faxanadu (Come on Hudson! Don't leave this one out!)
Lufia I & II (Especially II)
Illusion of Gaia (Non DW or FF, should be possible)
E.V.O. (Same reason)
Secret of Evermore
Ogre Battle (Wasn't this one announced in Japan a while ago?)
Super Punch-Out!

Hm... Pretty good general top-5 list. It's a slow day today at work, so here's mine
Top 5 :
5 : River City Ransom
4 : Mega Man II
3 : Startropics
2 : Phantasy Star II
1 : Secret of Mana
Low 5 :
5 : Operation Wolf
4 : King of Monsters
3 : Donkey Kong 3
2 : Boogerman
1 : Space Invaders

Well, it's no surprise this is another one-week game, but the game itself is a surprise. Startropics was one of my favorite NES games, and if this one is as good as the first one, it should be worth a look. Plus, I've never played it, so this looks like a good way to spend some Christmas Wii points

Me wants X-COM/UFO on WiiWare! (Heck, if THAT happens, I'll have to resign and leave my girlfriend )

Out of the blue :
I have to agree this place is one of the most civilized gaming forum I've seen on the 'Net.

You do realise I was trying to be funny on my last (and quite far) comment? I know my sense of humor is not a given, and I know I rely to much on sarcasm, but still, it was not meant to be taken seriously. Anyways, with the conscutive release of 2 great RPGs, I think RPG fans will have more than enought to sink their teeth into, and considering RPGs take some time to finish and require some kind of commitment (thing you don't need with shooters or platformers), RPG fan's hands are full right now. Which brings me...
Kinda on topic
I was starting to think we were due for some strategy game, I'm thinking along the lines of Warsong. Oh and I am the only one who whishes to see early NES adventure games like Deja Vu and Uninvited (hopefully with Wiimote support)?
Re: USA VC Releases: Super Mario RPG and Clu Clu Land
Regarding next week, I think we're due to return to regular stuff, SMRPG was a pretty big 250th release, so nobody should get his hopes high. Though I do hope we get Mana pretty soon, I think I'd be starting to complain about "YARPG" if we get it next week since, well, getting too much RPGs in a row is bad for your health, mmmkay?
Re: USA VC Releases: Super Mario RPG and Clu Clu Land
Seems like drought VC weeks are all but a bad memory! Nice to see some really great games released these past few weeks. Now time to get some points, I haven't downloaded Ys yet, and now this.
This should also relieve the board of some unnecessary whining
EDIT : I'm almost sorry today (labour day holiday) isn't rainy Oh well guess Ys and SMRPG will have to wait... runs outside
Re: USA VC Releases: Ys Book I & II and Samurai Shodown
Well great week, no surprises here. 2 excellent games to end an
excellent month!
