Re: USA VC Releases: Mega Man and Neo Turf Masters

Kultist

@ MaxPlastic
Yeah, I agree you get more for less with the Collections, but I like Wii's Channels and not having to move to change games. Hep. I'm that lazy (when it comes to sitting in front of my TV to play games that is).
Anyways, now that I have lots of unfinished games laying next to my Wii, I'm starting to kind of like VC's distribution pace. Of course it's disappointing when you get some similar stuff 3-4 weeks in a row, but OTOH you get to appreciate the games you do like, and it gives you time to actually finish them. So bottom line is : I like VC

Re: USA VC Releases: Mega Man and Neo Turf Masters

Kultist

@ Kriqz :
Yup. I was thinking the same just a about a minute ago. Boy is MM unforgiving. I think I only love MM1 because it was the first game I played on NES. (I still prefer the second and third).
I love when games like that are released, pretty much like Punch Out! You get bang for you buck because you know you're going to curse the TV and the remote for at least a month.
On another topic, I just thought of a Capcom game that might make it to VC and that would be nice if you're into platformers the quality of MM : Duck Tales (1st one).

Re: USA VC Releases: Mega Man and Neo Turf Masters

Kultist

@ People talking about getting the Megaman Anniversary Collection :

Megaman Anniversary Collection :
Finding and buying the Collection on eBay, + shipping = about 25$
Getting a GC wireless controller if you don't want that 2 feet cord = about 40$
Learning to jump when you want to shoot, and to shoot when you want to jump = 40$ (to replace the first controler you broke when you threw it on the wall)
Total : 105$
Wii VC :
Getting all NES and SNES Megaman (when they are released) = 1-6 @ 5$ + 7-8 @ 10$ = 50$
Getting to play all original Megaman games with a controler that plays like the original, from the comfort of your couch, without having to pop in a disc or move at all : priceless
Total : 50$

Ok I'm lazy, but I still think the Collection isn't for everyone. And besides, where's the fun of having all Megaman games all at once? I prefer the fun of waiting and enjoying every game as they are released.

Re: USA VC Releases: Mega Man and Neo Turf Masters

Kultist

Well no surprises here, which is a good thing!
It's a good thing we finally got Megaman, I can only hope the other ones will follow soon.
I hope Tony's right and that we'll get Y's and SS2 next week, this would make August a great month. In the meantime, I'll have some gutting, cutting, icing, firing, etc. to do

Re: Bionic Commando Not Approved For Virtual Console

Kultist

@Cally
lol yeah I'm starting to think the VC department is run by a bunch of rhesus monkeys on crack.

Sad news, I believe this was one of the first games I played on NES and it was rather cool. Still I don't think it aged too well and I certainly would not download it anyway, but there is something strange and saddening in seeing all those games not getting a second life for some obscure (and very probably inane) reasons.

Re: USA VC Releases: Star Parodier and Break In

Kultist

@ Rexy : Yes I think so, though I must admit I have R-Type which would make the choice a bit harder. But still, I personally prefer lengthy games like RPGs, simulations and strategy. I agree that to some SMRPG and Earthbound are YARPG (I also think SMRPG is a rather bland RPG, but Earthbound is a really special and tongue-in-cheek old school RPG), but when I said YAS and YAF, I was referring to the fact that it was "Yet Another". We've had our share of shooters and fighters lately and even if the best of each was released tomorrow, I'd still be "YAS and YAF" because there is a tad bit too much of those right now and because, well, like it or not, shooters and fighters are a repetitive bunch. Some balance would not hurt. I'm taking RPGs as an example because the genre is really lacking on VC (could be sims and strategy too. How about Warsong? Me wants Warsong! )
@ Mickeymac :
You said it. Earthbound anytime, SMRPG can wait till 2012 for all I care
See, I know each and everyone here has personal preferences, and I'm all for that. That's why I try hard not to generalize. But still, I'm sure that even as a shooter fan, you're getting behind every shooter released lately and I'm pretty sure you did not get all of them (or did you?) because they're not all worth it. I for a RPG fan would not download half of what would be released if every NES RPG was released right now for instance. Still, RPGs are pretty much very unique and require a different kind of playing involvement, which IMO make them a special offering when they show up on VC. And yes those games would all make a great addition to VC, especially Crystalis which has a special place in my personal video game hall of fame.

Re: USA VC Releases: Star Parodier and Break In

Kultist

@ Adamant
Really? YARPG? There are 37 fighters and 32 shooters on VC and 11 only RPGs. I agree with you that asking for these 2 games only is getting tedious (and on my nerves too!). I am not asking for any game in particular because I like being surprised. Which has not happened in months. Heck, I'd take the worst RPG on NES (you name it) over the best shooter on any of VC's console right now. Just because it would make a change. I totally agree with you, asking for ONLY Earthbound and SMRPG is really getting old, but YARPG? Come on.

Re: USA VC Releases: Star Parodier and Break In

Kultist

@ Mickeymac and Rexy:
Well I'm pretty sure we'll hear from those that were waiting for Star Parodier when they leave the game for a second
I personaly was not waiting for that game and I was only speaking for myself. Like I said, taking a step back might help see things how they appear in the long run. Let me lend a hand, I did the maths for you. Since January, we had 54 games released :
13 action/adventure
12 fighter
9 shooter
6 puzzle
6 arcade
5 sports/racing
2 RPG
1 sim
(US, might be off by 1 or 2 since VCR uses weird genres like import. IMO, a japanese shooter I never saw is still a shooter, but maybe it's just me)
So you do realize that if we take action/adventure out of the picture (which is a rather large and very encompassing genre), we've had as much fighters + shooters (21) as all other genres altogether (20).
So maybe Star Parodier was highly anticipated, but maybe in the meantime people just realized that it was YAS (Yet Another Shooter TM). So even if we DO get SS2 next week, I'll be "whining" if it does not come with MM1 or Ys because it'll be YAF (Yet Another Fighter TM).
Take your favorite dish, eat only that 2 times a day for a month (you can still have what you want for breakfast), then we'll have a talk.
I for one don't care if it was reviewed at 98% in 1985 and still got 94% in 2008. It's YAS or YAF. I think the best thing that could happen to VC right now is no fighters and no shooters for a while.
My 2 cents. Sorry if I sound like a perpetual rant, I just came back from vacation with a cold

Re: USA VC Releases: Star Parodier and Break In

Kultist

Funny how any comment that does not come close to "HURRAH" is considered whining. How about being critical? Having an opinion that is not that of everybody? Taking a different perspective?
Even if those games were awaited, and I know they were, the problem is one we already mentionned and that will get bigger as time passes. Cally just mentioned it : shooters get old a bit faster that other genres (and I would add fighters too).
So I'm asking : how many shmups/fighters before you get tired? You can't really be downloading every damn game that comes out on VC (unless you're rich and/or have no life), even if you're a fan of the genre. Heck, I'm into RPGs, but I'd be pissed if every week saw the release of 2 RPGs.
I just checked what VC had to offer for every genre (US, but should be pretty much the same for EU), this should surprise a few :
Action/Adventure : 77
Fighting : 34
Shooters : 30
Puzzles : 18
RPGs : 11
Sims : 8
Strategy : 5
So let me ask again : how many shmups/fighters before you get tired?
Oh and go ahead, shoot the messenger, you shooter fans

Re: USA VC Releases: Star Parodier and Break In

Kultist

* "whining" warning *

No offence meant to anyone who was waiting for today's games, and not to sound overly skeptical, but I think last week's epic release announcement fail and this week's correct release announcement shows how much VC is becoming a subpar game milking service. Like Tony said (#8 & 11), it is rather strange and disheartening to see the lack of consistency in release annoucements and actual releases, and the fact that VC has become a dull, disconnected service. Appart from building up Metrohype before MP3C release, VC has lived a solitary and mycologistic life in a damp, remote cave. There are 2 weeks left to August to release announced games (MM1, Ys and SS2), so I'll wait 2 weeks before making final conclusions on VC and believe me, I'd be really happy to be proven wrong.

* end of "whining" warning *

Re: Goldeneye Locked In Legal Limbo

Kultist

If Rare was to release earlier games, I'd wish for Battletoads, the Wizard and Warriors series and Killer Instinct (both), so I can get back to growing blisters on my thumbs
Oh and while looking for Rare's games, I realized Rock N' Roll Racing was done by Blizzard (under another name) and not by Rare like I mentioned a while back on a racing Top10 list. So there's hope for RRR!

Re: USA VC Update: Sonic (Master System) and Splatterhouse 2

Kultist

Great. I'm not as surprised as if the games announced would have been released. I think I agree with Rapadash (#58). Nintendo is making sure they control absolutely everything on release schedule... So my eternal-skeptical-but-once-again-proven-right half thinks none of the games announced (MM1, Ys, etc.) are going to get released this month.
Meh. Should have know not to get my hopes too high. Well back to hating VC and expecting nothing out of it for the next few months
@DEMON : Remember you comment about you killing people complaining? How about aiming that at whoever is responsible of VC announcements and releases?

Re: Mega Man Finally Out On Monday In USA

Kultist

This Monday is going to be the best in months. 3 excellent games in 3 different genres is hard to beat
I'm looking forward to both Ys, which I've never played but which looks great, and MegaMan, which was first contact with the NES!

@DEMON212 : Yeah I'm with you on this one, 3 grade A games released in the same week deserves attention, even if you're not into fighting, platform and RPGs (does such a gamer exist?!).

BUT (and I do wish my eternal skeptical half is proven wrong tomorrow), we'll get whining like we've never had if the release lineup is changed. Big announcement brings high expectations.

Re: Ys Book I & II Released in US Next Week

Kultist

Glad to see Nintedo took my wishful thinking into consideration
This is indeed one of the best VC week in months!
Ha! A few weeks ago my Wii was gathering dust, and now, I'll have to find a way to distribute my gaming time betweed Chocobo's Dungeon, Zack and Wiki (great point and click game!) and Ys.

Re: Samurai Shodown II Coming To North American VC In August

Kultist

Well nothing for me here, but it's good to see some of the best fighting games coming (all while restraining myself from pointing out this genre has already lots of offerings on VC...).
I'm just hoping it won't be the only release on August 4th, I'm still waiting for an end to my very personal VC drought. May the "unspecified day in August" be the 4th so I can get Ys

Re: USA VC Update: Chase HQ and Art of Fighting 2

Kultist

@ el cabarto & will
I don't think Wii is anywhere near dying. The next gen consoles are rather new and like I already and always say, developing grade A games takes time. Now, considering the Wii proposes a radical paradigm shift (i.e. shifting from a purely graphical paradigm to a gameplay/control paradigm), it's no wonder there are fewer top ranking games from third parties: there's the new controls and they try to make the best out of it. Give them some time. Capcom, Square, Konami & al. are already behind the Wii. I expect lots of exclusive titles from them and I'm sure they'll have great titles to offer in a short time. Just give developers some time to adapt.
In this context, I see the VC as a bonus, some (mixed) bones thrown at us to keep us busy while waiting.

Re: Top 10 Racing Games We Want To Come To The Virtual Console

Kultist

I agree with RC Pro AM, this game should be there, despite being a RARE game (which means we should probably forget it).
But you forgot the MOST important one : Rock And Roll Racing (SNES), which should at least be right behind Mario Kart and which is sadly another RARE game
I also kind of liked the Top Gear series on SNES

BTW, is it me or does today look like a Top 10 list day?

Re: USA VC Update: Super Fantasy Zone and Gley Lancer

Kultist

@ Bass X0 :

Yup, that is exactly why VC is getting so much complaining lately. Because a game was great in 1986 does absolutely not mean it withheld time and that it is still great nowadays. On the other hand, true classics (those games people are asking for) pretty much did stand the test of time (go see if SMB3 is still great for instance). So while I understand some people getting annoyed with whining all over for 1 or 2 games, this is easy to understand : why would someone spend a few bucks on a game he never played before unless it is a true classic that still holds strong even today when the only thing that drives VC sales is nostalgia?
Don't get me wrong I'm sure some people might disagree, but I believe this is what is lacking to make VC what it should be : classics. Releasing 243 sub-par games in a week won't make VC better. If a game received mixed reviews or simply went under the radar when it was first released (or if it was not even released in a given region), I doubt it is worth anything more today. Quite the contrary.

Re: USA VC Update: Super Fantasy Zone and Gley Lancer

Kultist

Well I think this is a rather good week. Not an excellent one by any mean, but it certainly feels like a breath of fresh air after the last few weeks. I won't download any of these (in fact I haven't downloaded since WiiWare's release week with both FF and LostWinds), but it's nice to see other consoles thant Neo Geo get some much needed attention.
In any way, these kind of weeks (OMG WTF NO SMRPG NTDO!?!? and that kind of crap) might be a good time to get back to some previous downloads and actualy finish them. Or maybe try some actual Wii games. There are those too. I for one am getting through Shining Force, then on to Phantasy Star II. All while enjoying Chocobo's Dungeon
For a few weeks I felt like Wii was becoming a letdown, but I think it'll pounce in a while. Developping games takes time, and WiiWare has only been there for a few weeks. VC is hit-and-miss, but in the span of a month or so, I think most people can get something worth their wait. Forget the "must get all those" weeks, it's a thing of the past and that's ok. I think getting a few games a week is kind of becoming engrossing, you wait and wait and when something you REALLY wanted gets released, it'll almost feel like the release day of a Wii game you were waiting for!
We'll see what next week brings. Like SuperMario, I'm hoping for anything but smhmups/fighters (please). I'm not very demanding

Re: US VC Releases - 14th July - Donkey Kong 3

Kultist

@ deadly.by.design & Alfred E. Newman

Guerrilla War! Jackal! Boy did I play those as a kid! I think I even overheated the Guerrilla War cartridge once for playing something like 6-7 hours in a row
I'd love to see those come to VC. I wish Nintendo would find a way to recompile these games and add online multiplay. Hmmm online multiplay Guerrilla War (don't think it feasible, but hey, I can dream)

Re: EU VC Releases - 11th July - Neo Geo Duo

Kultist

Well this is definitely smelling like SNK trying to press Neo Geo games before the release of the Classics Collection... When is it coming already so we know when to expect something not Neo Geo (hopefully)?
This really is a great time for Neo Geo fans...

Re: US VC Release - 7th July - King of the Monsters

Kultist

Thought this might interest a few people. Here is the answer I got from the email I sent to NoA saying I was disappointed with VC :

"I appreciate your taking the time to share your comments with us in regard to the number of Virtual Console games that are being released. I will forward your email on to the appropriate department for further review. While you won't be contacted further regarding this issue, please rest assured that your feedback will be taken into consideration when planning future releases."

I am surprised to see I didn't get the automated answer I was expecting. Sure I won't get a follow up on this, but I least I got the chance to say what I had to say to those concerned. I encourage those unhappy with what VC is turning into to write to NoA and tell them what they think of it. The more of us are heard, the more chances somebody will take notice.

Re: US VC Release - 7th July - King of the Monsters

Kultist

For the record, I went ahead with the suggestion to write to NoA about VC release schedule (or lack of). Though I doubt I will receive a satisfying answer, at least I'll have the satisfaction of having done what I could (along with not buying VC until something decent is released). I suggest we all do the same, it cannot hurt to let NoA know how we feel. They'll know that some people do care about VC.

Re: US VC Release - 7th July - King of the Monsters

Kultist

I also used to be excited on monday mornings and I would come here to see what awaited me after work... Now I just come here to see how much of a disappointment it's going to be. Sad thing is, a year and a half in the console's life, I now hardly see a reason to hang to it. VC has dried down to a brownish dribble, WiiWare looks too much of a rerun show (Breakout circa 1970!) and I don't think there is more than a dozen Wii games really worth having, depending on one's preferences. No offence, but I'm starting to eye towards the Linux modding community... Never thought I'd get there with the Wii

Re: US VC Release - 7th July - King of the Monsters

Kultist

@Rexy :
I'm sorry but thinking the PR team having anything to do with this and checkin around on the net to see if we deserve something good is delusional if you ask me.

I do agree with you that we can't always have SMRPG or Earthbound every week (heck, I'm not even asking for those), but you have to admit this is getting out of hand. If things go on at this rate for a few more months, I'll end up having bought an SNK or Hudson or Sega console. Not that I have anything against them, but I though I saw "Nintendo" on the white box sitting (and slowly gathering dust under my TV. As far as I'm concerned, and I don't think that's asking too much, I want Nintendo games. And I don't mean "made by Nintendo", I mean "that plays on a Nintendo console". Sure, TG16, Neo Geo and Segas are cool and I purchased a few of them, but like I said, I tought I saw "Nintendo" written somewhere on that thing...

Re: US VC Release - 7th July - King of the Monsters

Kultist

Hosed once again...
Nintendo seems to have broken its pattern, but I can see a new one emerging :
1 Neo Geo figther per week!
How much more of those are there left, so we can know how long we have to wait until we get something else? Anyone familiar with Neo Geo?
At this rate, the VC will house more non Nintendo console games than Nintendo console games in less than 2 months!
Sorry for the rant, but you have to admit this is getting tedious...

Re: Mega Man 1 & 2 Coming To North America Soon?

Kultist

This is great news, and I do hope Capcom will release Mega Man 1 and 2 in North America too (which would make sense).

Mega Man 1 is certainly one of my fondest childhood NES memories, and Mega Man 2 is in my opinion the best in the series (on NES at least).

@Jockolantern : Oh yes, having Mega Man 1-6 would be great. Let's hope Capcom will eventualy release all of them at some point.

Re: US VC Release - 30th June - Fatal Fury 2

Kultist

@DEMON : The ratings are taken from here and I was simply giving them to give an idea of the proportion of "good vs. crap". Of course, and like you said, ratings are a very personal matter. It just means that while, for example, NES has 72 games in US, only 27 are 4+ stars, and if we get into personal likings, this figure might drop to around 10-15 games really worth having for anybody, the games that make everybody go "I'm usualy not into [insert game genre], but this one is great"

Re: US VC Release - 30th June - Fatal Fury 2

Kultist

I've never whined at any VC release, but I am still disapointed more often than not. I understand that a game I don't know might be someone else's childhood gem. Thing is, and let's be honest, the VC appealed to a lot of people because it opened the Nintendo legacy content. I'm pretty sure most of us did not even think there would be Neo Geo or C64 games on it at one point. When I heard of VC on Wii I thought NES, SNES and N64 games.
Now, what I see is Nintendo sitting on a gold mine not doing much about it.
NES : 72 games (27 4+ stars)
SNES : 32 games (28 4+ stars)
N64 : 14 games (11 4+ stars)
Genesis : 50 games (25 4+ stars)
TG16 : 49 games (25 4+ stars)
Neo Geo : 13 games (8 4+ stars)
Except for NES, Nintendo's own library is a bit lacking. But even with 72 games on NES, we only have 27 4+ stars.
On the other hand, SNK and Hudson seem to have understood the potential of VC.

Re: US VC Release - 30th June - Fatal Fury 2

Kultist

And I thought I was the only one who remembered Crystalis (which Lugia2 mentionned). There are lots of great "underdog" games like Crystalis that could be released and that would make a lot of us happy. While I understand I can't be happy with everything released on VC (never had most of the systems on VC, so no nostalgia factor), a little variation in the genres released would certainly not hurt. How many mores bmups/shmups/fighters do we really need? A few RPGs and some sim games would be welcome, and it need not be Square games. I'd be perfectly happy with Faxanadu (come on Hudson!)

Re: US VC Release - 30th June - Fatal Fury 2

Kultist

Pretty disappointed to see the VC releases pattern coming up. At this rate, I'll be bored with VC before the end of 2008. VC was one of the primary reasons I bough a Wii (out of nostalgia I guess), so this is a major letdown, considering the slowdown on VC and the lack of great Wii releases

Re: EU VC Releases - 20th June - Epic Fail

Kultist

Hi there.
Here's a thing I did that might help you get through lame VC weeks:
A while ago, when VC started to go downhill, I backuped all my games on an SD, then deleted most of my VC games and only kept one. After two months without a download (I'm in Canada, so US VC), I got back to my SD card... Oh! here's a game I haven't finished yet... YAY! Free VC! (well kind of)
