Re: Talking Point: What's The Best Year In Gaming?

Karatecanine

I'd say 2001. GC launched. Xbox launched. Birth of online (console gaming at least). Play your own music over games. Halo. Rogue squadron 2 (my god that game still looks great). And without those systems we wouldn't have gotten so many great series/games. Metroid prime. Resident evil 4. Wind Waker. Kotor. Etc.
Oh and the PS2 was out as well.

Now here's a company that Nintendo should buy. Sony is buying companies, Microsoft is buying companies. Nintendo should as well. They already work very well together (Mario Rabbids games).
A quick Google search shows Ubisoft only has a market cap of 2.41 Billion Euros. Nintendo's is 52ish Billion Euros.
Assassin's creed. Rainbow 6. Splinter cell. Watch dogs. Far cry. Beyond good and evil. Prince of Persia. Star wars license. No more heroes. Red steel. Ghost recon. Call of Juarez. Driver series. Rayman. Star trek. Starlink. Trials. South park.
All those could be on Nintendo. AND Nintendo could right the ship.

I don't feel Nintendo has EVER played it safe when making consoles, and I don't know how an editor/contributor could think that. Since the GameCube, Nintendo has 'played it safe' in terms of specs, basically using off the shelf parts, but concept wise, no way.
NES, launched right after a crash and everyone said they were nuts. SNES, upped the power to basically state of the art at the time, and added in buttons and shoulder buttons. N64? First to analogue control stick, weird 3 prong design, 4 player capable from factory, the most power console on the market at the time, internet connectivity, first to feature rumble, etc. GameCube? Redid the controller design again, analogue shoulder buttons, changed button layout, used a proprietary disc that couldn't hold the same amount of data as competitors, also had internet connectivity, 480P capable, very nearly the most powerful console at the time, wireless controllers, very weird console lunchbox design, etc. Wii? Way underpowered, bet big on motion controls, another proprietary disc, weird 'nintendo way' online, and all the rest.
Wiiu? Underpowered, mid gen launch for some reason. Gamepad, Proprietary disc again, motion controls 2.0, ridiculous online 'nintendo way' 2.0, 2 players, seperate screens (amazing for COD btw. I could be sitting next to my brother and we'd know exactly where we were playing online, and just destroy people), stupid name, portable Netflix, YouTube, etc.
Switch? WAAAAAY underpowered, hybrid console with a dock that upped resolution to last gen HD, and we'll everyone knows how the switch didn't play it safe.

On to other points, the gamepad was perfectly designed for hands IMO, it kept them apart at the proper distance, as opposed to cramped up and jammed together on a tiny controller, buttons all within very easy reaching distance.
The reason the WiiU did console and portable, as you said, decently instead of doing one greatly, is because (again IMO), the tech wasn't there yet. Batteries were not as good as they are now, Bluetooth had a more limited range, wifi wasn't everywhere in the world quite yet, etc. Also, detachable motion controllers wasn't quite ready yet either, so they stuck with wiimotes.
All in all, I think the WiiU was an absolutely amazing console for the time, that suffered from lack of power, and very stupid marketing/advertising, and lack of big 3rd party games (but every Nintendo console does) which has to do with the architecture and lack of power the last 3 gens.

End of my weird rant

Re: Talking Point: How Does Microsoft's Purchase Of Activision Blizzard Impact Nintendo?

Karatecanine

Nintendo should respond by buying Sony Interactive Entertainment (their PlayStation division).
And before you respond with a bunch of hate, it's only(in terms of mega corps) worth 13.8 B.

Nintendo could swipe their debit card and buy them. Without a loan or anything. Just with cash. It has over 16B in liquidity.
That would help stop the microsoft takeover.

Imagine all Sony's exclusives on switch 2.0

Re: Talking Point: Remember When People Thought Switch Would Fail?

I have to say, that while the WiiU was not a hit, it's far and away my favourite console. Nothing will ever beat playing CoD on WiiU with my brother on the tv with the pro controller and me on the gamepad playing coop online. Amazing.

And that's why I had hope for the switch.

Glad it's worked out.

Needs more AAA 3rd party stuff. And for that l wish it wasn't so far behind other tech when it came out (even though the competitors came out 4 years earlier).

Re: Demo For Stunning Fan-Made 2D Metroid Prime Game Released

This got me thinking. With the rumours that the Metroid trilogy has been finished for a while, and Nintendo launching a switch pro this year, I wonder if they're upgrading the finished trilogy even more to launch alongside the switch pro? It would make sense to have a least a few fully optimised games to show off what it can do, and releasing an upgraded prime trilogy seems like a sure bet.

I still have to say my personal favourite is Ocarina. I remember when I played that for the first time. It had so many brand new things. So amazing for its time. Just so fresh. And new.
Breath of the wild took everything ocarina did and expanded on it. But also expanded
and perfected on stuff OTHER games/series did way earlier.....sometimes decades before BOTW did them (breakable weapons, wide open world, no dungeons, side quests for days, stamina meters, etc) Don't hate me, it's true.

And again BOTW is a better game, but the mindblowing factor was bigger in OoT.

Basically Ocarina is my fave because it did so many new things for the time and did them all so well.

BOTW did ESTABLISHED things, with slight additions, but did them perfectly.

@KillerBOB you're a bit of a loon. Definitely a northern MAGAt. Because regardless of how many sources or facts are presented, you still won't believe them. But here's another one for you to ignore. Updated January 1st, 2021. But you just keep licking those boots buddy. And I don't live it home champ. Me and my fiance bought a house and started a 400 acre farm (which we bought without any help from our parents, which I highly doubt a waspy fool like yourself can say). So why don't you wipe that cheetoh flavouring off your lips and the otoole brown from your thumb, and shut up, you coattails riding, jealous, sad little girl.
